The MacBook 5,2 is a 2009 MacBook "Core 2 Duo" as shown here:
http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/?search_keywords=MacBook5,2
Good news:  That model is capable of running the current release of OS X which is Mountain Lion!  See:
System requirements for OS X Mountain Lion
To update to Mountain Lion, you need at least OS X version 10.6.8, I believe.  I'm sorry, but I don't know exactly how to procure that particular version.  I do think you can get it at an Apple Retail Store if you live near one.

  • OLD MacBook - need help!  Clueless

I have an old MacBook - I believe it is a 2008.  It still works great, except I believe I need to upgrade my operating system.  All of the websites I keep going on are telling me that they don't support the browser I'm using (Safari 5.0?).  When I try to update the browser, it says my operating system needs to be upgraded... and I cannot figure out how to do that.  I tried to install Google Chrome after that and it said it was not compatible with this version of MAC OS X.
I don't need Google Chrome necessarily, just want to be able to update the operating system and browser on this MacBook.  Help!
Current Info: Mac OS X version 10.5.8.
I've gone under "Software Update" on the apple menu and it says there are no updates at this time... clearly there are!  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Trying to avoid a trip to the Apple store.  Thank you so much!

OK I'm doing this again since someone flagged my post but only the second one was erroneous.
The first one was to send you to Apple's site:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Where a download of Snow Leopard will cost you $19.99. (Is that ok?)
Your MacBook (2008?) can run Snow Leopard 10.6  and 10.7 for sure. The last version in that year will run 10.8.

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks/Yosemite - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Yosemite
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • Having a big problem with my 6 day old macbook, please help!

My macbook was working fine, I haven't had much of a chance to install the hardware that came with it until tonight though. I was starting to install the first disk that came with my macbook, when I saw that it would take over 3 hours to install. SInce I need to go to bed early I decided to cancel and figured I could start tomorrow after work.
Well, I turned my mac back on to see if it was still alright, and my mac hd is missing off the desktop, it doesn't even show the main toolbar/taskbar that's across the top of the screen unless I'm in safari. A message keeps coming up that says spotlight quit unexpectedly. I tried hitting all three options (ignore, report, and restart) different times and the window still keeps coming up.
I put the disk back in my computer to see if I could just start to install it again but the computer isn't even recognizing that there is a disk in there.
PLEASE HELP ME!! This is a brand new computer and I can't afford for it to break.

I hope you invested in AppleCare. It extends your warranty for three years and also gives you three years of phone support. MacBooks come ready to use, as far as I know. The discs that come with it contain software, not "hardware" are provided in case of problems. Take your MacBook back to the Applestore and they will take care of the problem. If it is unfixable, they will replace your MacBook, but you only have fifteen days, after which, they will repair your MacBook, but not replace it (unless it is totally FUBAR) Your sales person should have explained all this to you. Good Luck, and welcome to Mac world.

  • Old Geezer needs HELP.  clicking on and off and on and off

I have an ipod classic 80. It keeps clicking on and off and on and off. The little apple logo pops up on the screen when it comes on but then it shuts off again. I hear a faint "clicking" noise when it powers off. I tried pushing menu and select buttons and nothing happens. I'm old, aggravated, and sad. Please help the elderly !

I sent the following to someone else a few minutes ago. It may help you also:
Plug the iPod into your computer. Go to iTunes. Click on the iPod icon in the sidebar of iTunes. Click on the Summary tab. Click on the restore button. This will delete everything from your iPod, so you will have to re-sync all movies, music, pictures, contacts and anything else you have on it. If you are using the disk-mode option, it will wipe all this data too, so be sure to back these files up before you embark on the restore procedure. This is all assuming that the iPod will mount and the clicking noise isn't what I think it may be; A failed hard drive.
If none of this works, and the hard drive has failed rather than the iPod just needing to be restored then it is almost certainly still under warranty (the 80gb Classic has only been around since last September so I think you qualify for repair).
And you can always work your way through the Apple hints at the following link:
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/classic/
If this doesn't resolve the problem, you should probably get in touch with Apple Support:
    http://www.apple.com/support/contact/
    Good luck
    From another slightly old geezer...

This is a user to user forum, not Adobe support... ask a question and someone may be able to help
The information you need to provide when you ask a question is below... sorry... video editing IS fairly technical
From the Premiere Elements Information FAQ http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1042180
NOTE - McAfee kills the program http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1460089?tstart=0
•You MUST use an account with Administrator Privileges to run Premiere Elements
•(Doing Run as Administrator http://forums.adobe.com/thread/969395 [says Encore and also for "All" versions of Premiere] will sometimes fix "odd" errors)
•What version of Premiere Elements? Include the minor version number (e.g., Premiere Elements 12 with the 12.0.1 update).
•What operating system? This should include specific minor version numbers, like "Mac OSX v10.6.8"---not just "Mac"
•Has this ever worked before?  If so, do you recall any changes you made to Premiere Elements, such as adding Plug-ins, brushes, etc.?  Did you make any changes to your system, such as updating hardware, printers or drivers; or installing/uninstalling any programs?
•Have you installed any recent program or OS updates? (If not, you should. They fix a lot of problems.)
•What kind(s) of image file(s)? When talking about camera raw files, include the model of camera.
•If you are getting error message(s), what is the full text of the error message(s)?
•What were you doing when the problem occurred?
•What other software are you running?
•Tell us about your computer hardware. How much RAM is installed?  How much free space is on your system (C:) drive?
    And some other questions...
•What are you editing, and does your video have a red line over it BEFORE you do any work?
•Which version of Quicktime do you have installed?

  • Getting A Macbook, Need Help Transfering Files

Ok I'm getting a MacBook for X-Mas (that is if Santa comes through :)) and I want to know the best way to transfer some of my files on my pc to my new MacBook.
Specificly I'd like to transfer some of the videos in my iTunes library over to my new MB. Are there tutorials here that show you how to do this? I know that I can have the people at my local Apple store do this but I'd like to do it myself, mainly so I can familiarize myself with my new MB.
If anyone can help me out here I'd really appreciate the help.

  • Dropping wifi on MacBooks-need help please

I'm sorry, I'm new to Macs and I need some help. I've done a bunch of searching and am just not finding a solution - maybe there isn't one.
We have two MacBooks in our home, and four PCs.
Two weeks ago, both MacBooks started dropping the wifi connection. Airport will read full bars, but internet/mail don't work. The PCs are unaffected.
I have a linksys Wireless N router that we purchased, looks like this though I'm not at home at the moment and am unsure of the exact model number.
    http://homestore.cisco.com/en-us/Routers/Linksys-E1000-Wirelessn-router_stcVVpro ductId97826160VVcatId551966VVviewprod.htm
I've tried turning on and off airport, renewing my DHCP Lease (which I thought was working but after a few days the problem returned). Almost every time I turn on and off the airport and click on my network (secured) to join it makes me re-enter my WPA key, even though I've clicked to remember the password in my keychain. Sometimes the on/off works, but only for 10 or 20 minutes and then I have problems again. Some days I have no issues and other days are really bad and I can't get on the internet all night on the MacBooks.
I also tried going into my router settings and changing the channel and that seemed to screw up ALL the computers, even the PCs, so I had to put it back to auto configuration. I thought maybe that other networks in the area (I'm in a single family but for some reason I can see about 8 other networks in the neighborhood in my airport drop down) might be interfering.
I have read some threads that suggest 10.6.7 (which both MacBooks are currently running) might be the issue, and that you can revert back. I do not know how to do this. I have not backed up my system using time machine yet (got my MB at the end of March and don't have a new external harddrive to use time machine with - the one I have currently has all the backup from my PC on it and I don't want to delete it). Is there a way to revert the software back without having to re-install using the installation disks, therefor losing everything on the Mac? I mean, I don't even know if going back a version will fix it, or perhaps just suffering until Lion comes out?
    Any suggestions?

So if i put in the installation disk all photos/music/files will remain on the computer? it doesn't revert my system back to factory default? one of the threads I was reading they were discussing backing up the system first so I thought I'd lose everything.
the wifi issues will happen even when our macs are sitting about 5 feet away from the router, even. And yet other times they'll work perfectly when we're on a different level in the house. When I say wifi drops, airport sees the network, sees full bars, there's an IP address in the network settings, but internet pages won't load and mail won't receive/send.
Also, when I click on my network to try to get it to re-connect, I get a screen like this person did:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15381600#15381600
where it says connection timeout, or invalid password (even though it is a valid password and eventually after many tries to connect will randomly work).

  • Resurrecting old Satellite - need help

I needed a serial port for a car diagnostics machine so I am trying to resurrect my son's old Satellite.
The hard drive is bad - I hear it working and then get an error for hard drive password. I bought a replacement IDE HDD and of course then need to use the recovery CDs.  First problem is I kept getting a media error, check cable, PXE 61 or something like that.  I disabled the internal LAN, set boot to FDD, CD, LAN, HDD and now get "Insert System Disk in drive, press key when ready". I hear the DVD spin up so it's at least half alive - but no joy.  I put a old DOS boot FDD in FDD and can boot to DOS from floppy.  I don't have DVD driver for DVD so can't verify whether DVD is working.
Which leads to the most frustrating problem..  I wanted to find device driver for DVD to check if it's good - but...
I can't find a model number - the tag is worn smooth. I can't, of course, query OS because it's gone. I took picture of laptop - if anyone knows what model it is - I'd appreciate it!
Also - any gotchas, clues on why I can't boot from DVD w/ brand new HDD - I'd appreciate that too.

    First thing we need to know in resurrecting you old laptop;
How LONG has it been since you have had it actually running?
If you have had it off for a long period of time, it would be a good idea to replace the CMOS battery.
A low CMOS battery can cause all kinds of issues.
The second thing is to check on the BIOS version, it may need to be updated.
The third thing is to check the connectivity of each of your port connectors, USB, serial and so on.
Once you have these items completed, then you can go back and reset your BIOS  to boot from DVD and it should work.
    Let us know the results.

  • Old iPhone3 - need help getting photos off of it

I have an old iPhone3 that has been decommissioned, so it does not have cell service but can access email via wireless network. It has photos that I want to save off of it on to my computer. My computer via USB, does not see it but iTunes does. It has an old iOS on it so it keeps wanting to update the iOS. I tried backing it up but it does not seem to back up anything as it takes less than 5 seconds to back up 14 gig of music and photos. When I tried to use the back up file to transfer the photos, the file was empty.
How do I get my photos?
I don't want to sync and lose all of those photos because I get the warning that it will lose everything. So how do I get my computer to see the photos? The computer does not give me an auto-start option to configure in the settings because it does not SEE the phone as existing.

Are the photos in your camera roll or your photo library? photos in the photo library album where already synced and have to be unsunc they cannot be deleted. photos in your camera roll can be imported. if your using a windows computer connect to the computer and clickimprot pictures and videos/scanner and camera wizard in the autoplay box. if autoplay doesn't pop up u can go to my computer and right click on your device and select improt pictures and videos/scanner and camera wizard.
aperature or iphoto can be used with OSX
also your phone does not need to be recognized by itunes to import pictures.  If your computer as well does not recognize your phone that is a different story
