Old MacBook Pro or new MacBook Air

MacBook Pro 13in (2012) VS MacBook Air 13in (new)
I am thinking of buying a MacBook under $2000. At a glance the old 2012 model of the MacBook Pro is far superior to the new MacBook Airs, in tech specs. The MacBook Pro has a disk drive and more ports then the MacBook Air. The MacBook Pro has 2.9 ghz where the MacBook Air has only 1.7, and last but not least the MacBook Pro has 1000GB compared to the MacBook Airs 256GB. The MacBook Pro and Air both have 8GB RAM.
But the MacBook Air makes it up with next Gen technologies like new Intel chips, new wifi 802.11ac, and of course solid state drives.
What I mostly want to do with a Mac is software developing and media consumption/entertainment eg...
• Apple's Xcode or possibly Unity/Unreal Engine
• iTunes: movies, tv shows and music
• Mac AppStore
• Games
• Facebook
• Safari
• BootCamp (windows 7)
Which one would be more suited to what I want to do?

OK, not sure where are you getting this MBP? Warranty?

Migrating info from old Macbook Pro to new Macbook Pro and original laptop loses charge midway thru.  After charging again how do I get things going, do I start from the beginning?

Agreed. Don't even think about starting a long, disc-intensive process like that without both machines powered by AC.

    Hi
I have started migration système to transfert from hold Macbook pro to New MacBook air
Application starter successfully for several hours.
But since more than 3 hours I got the message "transferring Time zone paramètres " with time left less than 1 minute.
Any recommendation or suggestion to solve it ?
    Many tanks

If it has run for 3 hours it's probably done and you can quit Migration Assistant and reboot the new computer. In the future rather than using Migration Assistant I would recommend using Startup Assistant which tends to be a bit more reliable and does not create a new user account as MA does. If  you're interested here is an article explaining Setup Assistant tips.

  • Old MacBook Pro vs New MacBook Air

I am having a hard time choosing between a 2011/2012 Macbook Pro with an i7 quadcore or a new MacBook Air with a dual core i5. I will be using this computer mostly for Logic Pro , Photoshop , Illistrator, as well as basic web browsing and word documents. Which computer will work best for this ?

16GB of Ram is the max for that MBP, and an SSD will bring the drive speed on par with the Air. The MBP will then outperform the MBA all over.

  • Transferring apps from my macbook pro to new macbook air

my old macbook pro froze. i bought a new macbook air and need to transfer my applications. How do I do that?

if the old mac still boots up normally you can use migration assistant, the following article tells how to do this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889
if the old mac won't boot up the only option in this article you can use would be target disk mode which requires a firewire to thunderbolt adapter.
either way this should get the data onto your mac

  • Transfer files from old macbook pro to new macbook pro using mavericks

I have called Apple support about 5 times about this and have been given 3 or 4 different response none of them work.
I do not have an ethernet cable.
The computers are on same network.
I have time capsule not yet set up.  Apple support told me to use usb but no port on new mac. So old mac is running OSX 10.8.5 and new one is Maverick.  I cannot update files on old computer as I just get this message to sign in to my acount that used to buy old apps.I am 1.5 hours away from apple store so if i needed special cable from Apple i would have purchased it with Time Capsule.  I was told that to do it wirelessly would take over a day.
Right now am puzzling over what is best to do without losing files.  I dont want to lost my music files as I have had them for a long time and all were not purchased from itunes store.
Any thoughts on where to start feel free to suggest them.
    Thanks Jan

    Just one comment on this:
‘If I have, say, an older version of iPhoto but a newer version of one on my new Macbook Pro, will it still transfer photos no problem?’
the problems are ALWAYS in the reverse way, when you have the newest (or a newer) version of a given app, and wish to transfer its library to an older version.
Otherwise, see the link to Pondini.
I have been using Martin Jahn’s iBackup, with which I have become accustomed and works fine. It also makes daily backups. Its advantage over other apps is that you may add whatever you wish to save, beside its default settings (which you may delete or cancel, of course, even if not recommended); it also has a friendly interface and easily customizable. Of course, this is a personal view, you may try other methods as well, or other backup apps. All are good if you are satisfied and correspond to your needs.

  • Getting AppStore Apps & iTunes Library from old (broken) MacBook Pro onto new MacBook Pro?

Hi, I just bought a new MacBook Pro, and my old MBP is broken (water was spilled on it)...How can I get all the apps that I purchased on my old laptop onto my new laptop? Can I download them from the App Store? Many were not synced with a mobile device...I would appreciate any help!

If you did an iCloud backup, it is possible for you to transfer your purchases.
If not, it depends on how damaged the Computer is.  How bad is the water damage>?

Mac OS X 10.7, 10.8: How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889 - "You can use Migration Assistant in OS X Lion and Mountain Lion to transfer important information, such as user accounts, applications, network and computer settings, and files, from one Mac computer to another via a FireWire cable, ThunderBolt cable, or via an Ethernet or wireless "

  • I used migration assistant for old MacBook Pro to New MacBook Pro

Today, after being on the phone to applecare I uses migration assistant to copy files, applications etc from my old macbook pro to my new one using firewire, but only somethings copied for example, none of my photos, or music came over and also a lot of the software is asking for verification and codes etc. When the applecare person asked me to restart the old macbook pro holding down the "t" key, when it restarts all it shows is a firewire icon bouncing around on the screen like a screen saver, giving me no access to the old mac and therefore having to choose the transfer "from a time machine back up or other disk" option instead of the "from another mac" option, could that be the problem? Has anyone else experiamced this?

I did choose "other disk" cause it wouldn't let me choose the "from another mac" option. I'm thinking this is why not all of my stuff transfered? Also is it strange that the old mac just had the firwire icon bouncing around on the screen the whole time?
    Thanks

  • Cloning Old (2007) MacBook Pro to new MacBook Pro

I may have to buy a new Macbook Pro. My old one may have liquid damage (beer). It boots fine, every is fine but the keyboard is not functioning.
So If I buy the new one, can I just use carbon copy cloner to clone my existing drive to my new machine so that I am up and running with all my Apps and data as quickly as possible. Everything on the machine is up to date as far as versions goes.

You can. Also you can connect the old Mac to the new Mac via firewire in target disk mode, this way just choose to transfer data from a different Mac as you build the new Mac. This way all is done for you and you have a brand new build.
Better still get a new keyboard fitted and save money unless you want to buy a new Mac.

  • What is the fastest way to transfer data from old macbook pro to new macbook pro using the migration assistant

I'm trying to transfer my data (applications, files, etc.) From my older macbook pro to my new macbook pro. I've started the migration wizard and the process aHa its going to take 16 hours. Is there a faster way? Fireside? If so what cables would I need and is it ok to stop this since its already startwd.

    Ethernet or Firewire:

Sounds like you're using WiFi...that will take forever & can produce errors.

  • 06 Macbook Pro Coreduo - New Macbook Pro, Superduper Question

I sold my old macbook pro this weekend. It was from March just after they released the first intel machines and before I sold it I used superduper to clone the internal drive to an external. I had planned to just plug the external into my new macbook pro 2.4 boot from the external and copy the old system back to the internal drive. The old one had the retail box version of Leopard. I just want to make sure that there is no reason I can't do that. I was a little concerned that perhaps something in the chip architecture meant that I couldn't just use the old drive image. I think I am fine but if anyone can confirm, it would make me feel better.

There is a reason not to do that - installations of the OS are build-specific. You probably won't do harm, but you'll be missing features (e.g. options for controlling the multitouch trackpad, which recognizes up to four fingers for different gestures on the new MBP).
Instead, I'd recommend using Migration Assistant to move your files from the external drive to the mew MBP - you'll be given that option by the Setup Assistant, and it will work well in your case (it's a bad idea to Migrate a PPC machine to an Intel machine, a not-great-but-still-probably-ok option to Migrate a Tiger intel machine to a Leopard Intel machine, but fine to Migrate Intel+Leopard to newer-Intel+Leopard). Migration Assistant will pull all your apps, files, music, settings, etc., over from the backup clone to the new machine.

  • Need help migrating from damaged MacBook Pro to New MacBook Pro.

My Mid-2008 MacBook Pro's logic board died and I have just purchased a 2012 Refurb MacBook Pro to replace the old laptop. I do have a backup on Time Machine but the most recent backup is about a week old. I would like to be able to do the migration using the disk in the old laptop, but it will not completely boot up and will arrive at the "forced shutdown" screen soon after it boots. Can I still connect to the old laptop using migration assistant even though I am at the forced shutdown screen? Old computer is running OSX Lion. I think the new one will have either Mountain Lion or possibly Mavericks on it. I've used Migration Assistant previously, so I am familiar with how it works. I'm just not sure if it will work in this instance with the old computer.

It looks like it did change. (We're talking about 5 years ago and at least 3 operating systems ago), but I do remember that the instructions for Migration Assistant back then said that on the old computer where you just needed to access the drive, you had to hold down a key or keys when after hitting the power key. This will allow access by the new computer to the harddrive in the old computer without the need to boot up, basically making the old computer an oversized harddrive enclosure.
It worked perfectly when I did it with my old iBook which would not even get to the gray Apple logo, but the MacBook was able to fully access the drive, allowing me to migrate the apps, fonts and work files stored on it, including my entire iTunes library.
like I said earlier, if this is no longer the case, than removing the drive from the old computer and inserting it in an external drive is the next best way to go. Of course, having a fairly recent backup on Time Machine should also work.
