Old MacBook Pro, Snow Leopard, iMovie 09 and Sony DCR-SX41 Finally Solved!

So this has been a real trial...
Finally got video to import in iMovie09 using the DCR-SX41.
The issue was that the Snow Leopard upgrade trashed a critical file. I found that out here:
http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
So I purchased the file from Apple, at $21.00.
I downloaded and installed the file, and iMovie "found" the DCR-SX41 just fine!
If you are just coming to this camera, the trick to getting it to work with a Mac is to find the "USB Mode" or "DVD create" button. To find the button:
*Open the viewfinder
*Look at the body of the camera, there are two rows of three "buttons".
*On the top row of buttons, the extreme right button looks like an arrow piercing a DVD (or CD).
*Making sure the camera is connected to the Mac with the USB cable (on external power is helpful), *Press the "pierced DVD" button.
* On my mac, iPhoto 09 starts up, which is annoying. So I quit iPhoto9. It sometimes takes awhile to quit!
*Start iMovie 09
*Open "Import from Camera" under the "File" menu
*The Import window will open, and it will say "Import from iSight".
*In 30 to 120 seconds, yes, a long time, a window will pop up saying "locating DCR-SX41"
*In another 2-4 minutes, the camera will be detected, and the memory cards will be read.
*You can now select and import videos!
The key is waiting for iMovie 09 to detect the camera. It takes forever!
Good Luck!

I have tried to download the MPEG STREAMCLIP, as suggested by apple, but after the download is done, when you clic on the icon on desktop, 2 folders appear. One with EXTRAS, with 2 options, About save as AVI.rtf, and another, Save as AVI.component, wich is the one I shoul finalize the instalation of the program, but, when I click on this option, a window appear a ! yellow exclamation mark over the Quicktime Player icon, with the message: 'THE MOVIE COULD NOT BE OPENED" THE SPECIFIED FILE FORK DOES NOT EXIST.".
What else I have to do, to work?, Please, help me!!!!!

    Backups, especially bootable clones.
    Most commonly used backup methods
Keep your performance up by learning how not to over tax your machine or over fill the boot hard drive.
    Why is my computer slow?
How to safely defrag a Mac's hard drive
Don't use Safari as it's a older version on 10.6 and not receiving updates, use Firefox instead
Install AdBlock Plus into Firefox and Web Of Trust, search online for "Make Firefox 10x faster" if you have broadband and it will REALLY make your browsing faster as it downloads all the elements at one time, instead of one at a time like slow Safari does.

Well, you can try easing the shift key up with something thin but flexible (credit card sort of thing) but if the contacts below are stuck you may need to get it seen to by an authorised repairer.
If you can borrow a keyboard (a PC one will probably work as long as the password is alpha-numeric with no special characters) you can at least get in to backup your HD before going for repair.

  • Printer says "sending data..." and doesn't print (photosmart c440 & macbook pro snow leopard)

Hi, my photosmart C440 printer suddenly stopped working and wont print. The message says "Sending data..." forever but never prints. The printer is on but doesn't respond to what my computer says. I have a macbook pro snow leopard OS. This has never happened before, I didn't make any changes to the system. When the problem first appeared, I reinstalled the driver and was able to print once, then it stopped working. Then I installed snow leopard and it stil doesn't work.
    Thank you!

    Can someone please give instructions?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
To restore the MacBook Pro to factory settings:
    1. Make a backup of your files because everything will be erased.
    2. Insert the Snow Leopard disc and press the C key while your Mac is starting to start from the DVD.
    3. Go to Utilities menu > Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD on the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk.
    4. Close Disk Utility and install Mac OS X

    1. replace my current internal HD and convert it to external HD for use as secondary boot drive,
No.  That has no advantage for you.
leave the internal HD alone and purchase an external HD that I can clone and use as boot drive in case of emergency?
Yes.  I use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a boot drive and as a backup (in addition to Time Machine).  CCC allows one to make incremental changes as well as creating a copy of the recovery partition.  This means that if run on a proper schedule, you data will; be well protected and the MBP can be in operation very quickly if the internal HDD should fail.
A clone should be a 2.5", 9 mm thick SATA HDD so that it will fit inside the MBP.  It can be powered from the USB port thus not requiring an AC outlet.  In my collection of HDDs, I favor HGST and Seagate products.  I principally use OWC enclosures that allow for USB, Firewire and eSATA connections.  These are expensive but one can use a more modest one as well of one can tolerate longer data transfer times.
Here is a link showing some available SATA HDDs that will complement your MBP:

You can look for enclosures on the same web site.

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

  • MacBook Pro Snow Leopard battery life

Okay, I've been poring through the threads for days now to try to find a solution to this . . .
I have two different MacBook Pros (a 15" 4,1 and and a 17" 1,2). I've upgraded both to Snow Leopard. Each is now running 10.6.6.
After uprading, both started suffering extremely poor battery life, losing nearly 1% each minute, even when the Mac is sitting and doing nothing.
I've done all the fixes I've found (recalibrating the battery, resetting PRAM, checking for rogue processes, etc.), and so far nothing has fixed the problem. I even bought a new battery for the older Mac, and that had absolutely no effect.
Some of the threads I've seen here go back for more than two years.
Has anyone solved this problem? I'm at the end of my rope!

    1% a minute?
You're quite right - this problem has existed for years. Apple bases its power estimates on a device half intensity, using Energy Saver, and SL is supposed to have better battery performance than Lion.
Something is causing your battery to die on you. Check off the following one by one to make sure there isn't another problem:
    1. Are you attached by USB? If you leave your MBP attached to a USB device or Firewire cable, you can lose battery power even if your computer sleeps. Disconnect all devices when you're not using them.
    2. Are you using Energy Saver? Your machine may be sapping energy by being at high intensity. Instead, opt for a monitor at half or three-quarters brightness.
    3. Losing battery even while sleeping? That problem can be addressed by going to System Preferences/Bluetooth and disabling Bluetooth.
    4. Are you losing battery through heat? You can lose battery capacity with a system that's hot all the time. Keep your machines as cool as possible, through energy management, getting a laptop cooler, or using free applications like Fan Control.
    5. Limit your losses. Use a power cord whenever convenient to increase your real-life battery time.
    6. Some applications, like Skype that are on all day, sap battery power. If one such application is on all day (or close to it), this may be part of the issue.
    7. Don't upgrade to Lion. This OS demands twice as much power as SL.
I don't want to minimize the significance of the issue, but take a look at which processes are drawing power. You might want to go to Utilities/Activity Monitor at take a look at which applications are consuming your CPU.

  • Re: MacBook Pro, Snow Leopard, HP 6500 All-in-one.

    1. Snow Leopard designers tell us IN ADVANCE that you are failing to upgrade/integrate our printers/scanners, so that we aren't screwed with no warning after a software upgrade. we don't have hours/days to figure out a work around. Also tell us in advance what the RECOMMENDED printer scanner is going to be IN ADVANCE so that we're aren't suddenly out of business, despite pulling an all nighter.
    2. Need to know from any/all what is the best combination printer, scanner, copier (NO FAX IMPORT RESTRICTIONS). 2nd AIO failure since launch of Snow Leopard. 1st was Lexmark (2009-2010) all-in-one and now an HP 6500 (2010-2011) all-in-one. Both work initially then failed due to no support and/or integration between Apple and HP and Lexmark.
    3. Followed all known resolutions. Printer works not scanner. Loaded every driver, utility, reloaded Lexmark and HP software numerous times. Sick of it!
Also use Time Capsule (not the issue).

This is a user to user forum. You are not talking to Apple or any Apple software or hardware designers.  If you are having issues with your HP printer contact HP.

  • MacBook pro, snow leopard, iPhone and Bluetooth PAN problems

    Short Version:
I am having connectivity issues connecting my new MacBook Pro (MBP) to the Internet thru a Bluetooth PAN on my iPhone4. This has been working fine for a few days and then today it just stopped working responding that my iphone connection is not available, it's off, too far away or whatever. This is not the case. When I try to connect the iPhone to the MBP the iPhone is saying my MBP is not supported. I can pair the devices, but as soon as I try to connect to the Internet thru the iPhone via the MBP the connection fails.
    Long Version:
I received a shiny new MacBook Pro only a few days ago and I am having Bluetooth Paired networking issues as of today, 2nd, March, 2011. The MacBook Pro is running Snow Leopard 10.6.4, and is brand spanking new, unmodified, factory defaults.
The iPhone(s) I am using are iPhone 4's with iOS 4.1
On the first day I paired the MBP with both iPhones with ease, it was so easy my grandparents could have done it. So point and click and it just worked....
The iPhones are set up in iTunes with names similar to dave1 and dave2
On the MBP I can select which device I want to connect to the Internet by going to the Bluetooth icon and connecting to whichever iPhone I have handy at the time. Since the plans are limited connectivity, I do load share between the two.
Today, for no apparent reason, I have been unable to connect to my wife's phone just getting a basic "The Bluetooth network is unavailable" message telling me the iphone is out of range, not on, etc etc etc. Not true.
No problem, I just connected to my phone instead. Occasionally I tried her phone again, but it just never worked. I eventually got her to reboot it, still no joy.
Then, a couple of hours ago, while in the middle of reading my rss feeds, my Bluetooth connection dropped out. My phone is sitting right next to the MBP. So that's not the issue. No amount of reboots of either the MBP or the iPhone have fixed this. I have unpaired and repaired the devices (on both phones) countless times. I have removed the sim card and rebooted, I have disabled and reenabled Bluetooth on both, rebooting before doing this, and after and during, I have reset network settings. Nothing I try is working here.
Pairing alone is an event, but here's an example of what's happening:
I go thru the motions, the MBP shows me a number (eg, 451234) and the number is displayed on the iPhone. They see each other. The numbers are the same. Good. I click PAIR on the iPhone and MBP and everything appears good. But then if I go to connect to the iphone on the MBP I get the out of range error.
I have made both discoverable, and tried to connect to the MBP from the iphone, and got a different error message altogether: Connection Unsuccessful - "{insert my name}'s MacBook Pro" is not supported. W-T-F? It was an hour ago? What has changed?
Then, the only option on the iPhone is to "Forget Device". ok, forget it, and start again. Same same.
Neither the iPhones nor the MBP have been upgraded or changed in anyway today, or even recently. In fact, as mentioned earlier, I was actively using the connection without any issues for a number of hours when it just stopped for no apparent reason.
Not that these matter, but I am in Thailand (live here for the time being), I'm on the TrueMove network, which offers 3G coverage in my area (Patong Beach).
This could easily have been filed under MacBook Pro, iPhone, OSX and possibly many other discussion headings, because the issue can be any or all of the OS, the MacBook Pro Bluetooth adapter, the iPhone Bluetooth, (iOS for that matter), or some other unforeseen conditions...
My head is sore from pulling my hair out. I am open to any suggestions (reasonable or otherwise!)
For further info (not that this post is long enough already, or anything, but), I thought it was interesting that the phones didn't fail at the same time, so I pulled out an old iPhone 3GS and set it up, but after pairing, the two can still not connect.
I know its not an issue with the data plan on the iPhone since I'm here surfing now without an issue, so it's not a data problem.
    Open to ideas....
If you've read this far and you're ever in Phuket, give me a call... I'll shout you a beer

Ok, now I do wish I could edit....
I forgot to APPLY the network settings for the USB cable to work. Connected thru USB I can tether.
So, I kept playing, and playing some more...
I had previously unpaired everything, and gone as far as removing network devices HOWEVER...
I didn't remove the Ethernet, Firewire or Airport Network devices.
Now, I have done so. I REMOVED EVERYTHING
    No pairing, no network devices.
Bluetooth was already turned off, and I rebooted.
I turned off tethering and rebooted the iphone.
I turned on bluetooth (on the MBP), I turned on tethering. I browsed for the iphone. It said I was already paired???? Ok, repair AGAIN, and THE IPHONE SHOWED MY BLUETOOTH TETHERING BLUE BAR at the top of the screen!
I opened a web page, no go... d4mn, I was close...
Opened network preferences and the created a new bluetooth PAN and voila! Internet back on the MBP. I am about to reinstall the ethernet and airport (I can live without firewire for now) and see what happens.
Basically, the link I posted two posts ago, I had already done that, but I NEEDED to remove ethernet, firewire and airport as well...
So MAYBE it's fixed, we'll see for how long. I'm not going to mark this as answered for now, because basically, it has failed for no reason, and I want to know why...
Hopefully someone can come up with something, but having to delete and reinstall all pairings and network devices (to me) is not really a solution, it's a workaround (at best).

  • HP Photosmart C5580 and MacBook Pro Snow Leopard wireless printer with router

I have a macbook pro OSX operating system and a C5580 HP Photosmart printer.  I have spent hours with netgear as I did purchase a new router getting my macbook pro to print wirelessly.  Whatever the fix it is temporary and my private tech has to take control of my computer to get to work again.
    1. am I printing with bluetooth? through router?
    2. what is happening whenever it gets out of sync and how can I fix myself?
    3. computer says "idle" but shows device connected.  I can print test page wirelessly, but not current document. Documents print when I connect with usb cable.
I felt I should contact HP since I think it is their problem though netgear has been very helpful.  I understand that I do need USB to scan, but shouldn't have to have it to print. We have downloaded all of the most current drivers and software.

Tell me about your network - router brand/model, encryption type (WEP, WPA, etc) and ISP type (DSL, Cable, etc).
If you loaded the HP software from the printer CD and unless your CD says it specifically supports 10.6 Snow Leopard, you must uninstall the software using the 'scrubber' option:
Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller
    Click on Continue
Highlight your device on the left pane
Hold the Ctrl, Opt and Cmd keys and click on Uninstall
There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled)
Click Continue and let it finish
    Restart your Mac
    Now, run a Software Update.
Next, remove and re-install the printer in System Preferences, Print & Fax.
You do not need the software now since Snow Leopard has both print & scan drivers built-in. Scan from Preview or Image Capture apps. Scanning from the front panel of the printer does not yet work.
    Answers:
    1. No, routers don't do bluetooth.  If they are wireless routers they use wi-fi (802.11).
    2. I don't know, you have not told me enough about your symptoms or system.
    3. Same as #2.

In a little while a grey screen comes on and  after that a pop up telling me to shut down and restart my computer.I have done that andit still does not work. How do I fix it.?
    richardfromfort pierce

    richardfromfortpierce,
do you or don’t you have your MacBook Pro’s original grey installation DVDs?
If your MacBook Pro is a 2007 model, then Mac OS X 10.6.3 was not installed onto your MacBook Pro from its grey installation DVDs, but rather from a white Snow Leopard DVD. The white Snow Leopard DVD does not have any Apple Hardware Test; to run your Apple Hardware Test, you will need the grey installation DVDs which originally came with your MacBook Pro when it was new. If you no longer have those grey discs, you can contact Apple directly and purchase a replacement pair. (They’re not available in the Apple stores.)

  • Macbook Pro, Snow Leopard , can't drag and drop?

I have a 13" Macbook Pro and I am unable to drag and drop with my trackpad but I can with a wired mouse.  I have reinstalled Snow Leopard and checked every conceivable setting and checked the trackpad.  The trackpad will do everything else but 'drag and drop".  Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Sounds as if it may be a hardware issue with your trackpad - I would take it into your local Apple Store or an AASP and let them run diagnostic tests on the trackpad. If you've already reinstalled SL, that would be my suggestion.
