Old Macromedia - Adobe cross platform font issues

This message is more directed to Adobe.
I am aware that currently OpenType fonts are cross platform compatible but only with Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign.
However, my primary workspace is Fireworks-Flash. There are serious cross platform issues with fonts - I have looked at truetype, postscript and opentype and they all have issues translating onto PC - many of the styles are not available.
In our studio I design on Mac but our Flash developers are on PC - our final renders and review renders always need to happen on Mac as a result of this cross platform issue. This is a little inefficient.
When is Adobe planning on resolving this issue?

"I am aware that currently OpenType fonts are cross platform
compatible but only with Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign."
No, they are fully cross-platform compatible. The Adobe products you
mention, along with a very few others, are the only applications
capable of taking full advantage of the advanced features available in
some opentype fonts. And even the three products you mention don't all
necessarily support open-type in the same way.
"However, my primary workspace is Fireworks-Flash. There are serious
cross platform issues with fonts - I have looked at truetype,
postscript and opentype and they all have issues translating onto PC -
many of the styles are not available."
If you are using the same application version on both platforms, you
should have identical functionality. If you're using an older version
of Fireworks.
The only cross-platform style issue with TT or T1 fonts is that
Windows doesn't recognize any styles other than Regular, Bold, Italic,
and Bold Italic. Also, there's a font menu difference between MacOS
and Windows. Mac display all available styles, whereas Windows only
displays the family name, and you have to select the variants from
somewhere else (typically "B" "I" "U" buttons). SOME font families
from some vendors use the style function to define such variants as
Small Caps, Light, etc. MS products get ... confused.
"In our studio I design on Mac but our Flash developers are on PC -
our final renders and review renders always need to happen on Mac as a
result of this cross platform issue. This is a little inefficient."
If you're using different applications for design and rendering, and
their functionality is different, then you have a cross-application
compatibility issue. You didn't mention what applications or versions
are involved.
"When is Adobe planning on resolving this issue?"
It may be more a Microsoft issue than an Adobe issue. In addition to
the style limitations, There are no MS products that yet support
open-type features.
Although Adobe personnel do sometimes visit here, this is not a
"talk-to-Adobe' forum. Since your problem is application related, I'd
suggest taking it to the appropriate application forumsFireworks
General Discussion looks right.
And, as Bob said, you might also contact Adobe support directly with
your concerns.

  • Adobe cross platform?

I purchased Mac's adobe Photoshop cs5, is it possible to convert the mac version to windows so i don't have to repurchase the software when i got my new computer?

    Hi,
Please see http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/405/kb405819.html. Adobe offers cross platform swap for current shipping version and you will only be paying for shipping. Since Photoshop CS5 it still the latest version you can request swap to windows platform however adobe will be cancelling your mac license and provide you with a windows software/license.
    Hope this helps!

  • Help!  Cross Platform Projector issue

    Hi all,
I am sure this has been a hot topic for years and I did do
various searches and was surprised not to find anything on it
quickly. Sorry if this has been discussed a lot, as I imagine it
has. We are able to make our functioning mac and win projector with
our win version of flash 8, but everytime I burn the cd on win, the
projector file does not know what to do with itself when trying to
    launch back on mac.
    Questions:
    1. Does cross platform burning have to be performed on a Mac?
    2. If so, does one need toast to do the cross platform
burning to make the mac and win projectors groovy on their
respective platforms? We have a brand new MacBook Pro - it seems
like it should have these capabilities built in at this point, but
    not sure.
Any pointers here or to a technote would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • Adobe Reader X Font issue

I'm new to the forum, so I apologize if this has been discussed already!  I recently downloaded the newest Reader (X) and have encountered an odd problem.  Files that I had saved and viewed with the older version now look "wrong".  By that, I mean that the font appears jagged and uneven, as if I'm looking at a printed copy from a crappy printer.  Indeed, when I print the files off (like something from an online journal like Nature) the resolution of it is unacceptable.  I first thought my printer was on the brink, but when I looked at the file on my computer, it looked bad.  The same files had looked fine and printed great with the old version.  I'm guessing there is some setting that I messed up somehow.  Any thoughts?
    Thanks so much!

Thanks for the info. Maybe that would be nice to build into the Reader and/or Acrobat a function to check any existing installed Adobe versions on the PC and warn the user if there would be any incompatibility issue during the installation of a new Adobe product. Many no-name programs can do that............ The great Adobe no would be able to do that???????

  • Adobe Indesign CS6 Fonts issue

    Dear Support,
We have performed a re-installation of Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.
We also had to re-install Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010 as well as Adobe Indesign CS6 and Photoshop CS6.
We have installed all Windows Updates and all Adobe updates.
The problem we are experiencing is that Arial Narrow is detected by Indesign as a seperate font and not a family font.
This in turn is causing issues as we cannot select Arial Narrow Bold, Arial Narrow Bold Italic and Arial Narrow Italic.
The version of the font is 2.37.
I have read on previous posts that there are issues with font version 2.35 which is installed with Microsoft Office 2007 and there is a hotfix on Microsoft's website.
We cannot use this as stated above we use Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010.
Please inform if there is a hotfix to run from Adobe's Website or from Microsoft to resolve the above issue.
    All assistance is much appreciated.
    Kindest Regards.

    Moving to Indesign forum.

  • D11 Cross-Platform Shockwave Issue

I just did a build of a Shockwave version of a freeware game
    that I created in Director.
I'm using the DCR and HTML page generated by Director 11, but
while it loads and works just fine on a Mac, it doesn't load on my
Windows computer (or on my Mac under Parallels or BootCamp). On
Windows, it just hangs there with an empty progress bar. Forever.
You can see it in action here:

Thing is, I've done a Shockwave build of another freeware
game of mine and it works fine on my Windows computer. You can see
    it here:

Anyone have any idea what might be wrong?

hmm, not the right place i guess - but as it seems that for
me director is history - are you using unity pro or indie?
and is indie good enough? i downloaded the trial (by the way

get into it as much as i want to. so what do you think, how long
does it take to put a project from director to unity with about
    20000 lines of lingo...
hmm, maybe a silly question, but i definitely have to look
for an alternative to director. and any information is very much

  • Acrobat Adobe Pro X: font issues

When I open files in Acrobat Adobe Pro X, the font is not clear. Can I fix that?

It depends on several things. First, try Edit>Preferences>Display and select smoothing.
Check the fonts that are used in the PDF (use ctrl-D>font tab) and check that they are not bitmaps. Usually you want true-type, type 1, or open-type fonts.
If you zoom in and the fonts are pixelated, then you are looking at bitmap fonts or possibly just a picture.

  • Cross platform networking issue

Okay, my group consists of about three dozen Macs (most on 10.3.9, but about half a dozen on 10.4.3) and we are hooked up to a Windows-based network which uses Extreme-Z IP to serve up the shared volumes to the Mac users. Recently, the corporate IT folk upgraded the network file servers. Now we can connect to the new servers via the "Connect to Server..." dialog, however, on most of the machines, the new file servers don't appear when browsing the network in a Finder window (on a few machines they do show up). At first I thought this must be a Tiger vs. Panther issue, but I quickly discovered that most of the Panther machines have the same trouble. Anybody got any ideas why this would be an issue on some machines but not others?
    Thanks in advance.
    Dual 2.0GHz G5 Powermac   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Here's an update: What I said in my first post was a little misleading. You can actually see the file servers from all the machines, but not in the way we used to be able to. Previously when browsing the network we could see the Appletalk zone as a folder on the network and all our file servers showed up in that folder. In addition to that, a folder called local would show up, and all our file servers would also appear in that. What I didn't realize is that folder exists on the Tiger machines as well, except it's called My Network. So we can browse to all the file servers that way (which I'm guessing represents Rendezvous?) but they don't show up on any machines in the Appletalk zone folder. My guess now is that this is an issue with the way the servers are configured. It's no longer a crucial issue (since everyone can get to the shares via the Local (or My Network) folder) but I would still like to know what's going on. Anybody got any insights?

  • Cross Platform Styling Issues

I am currently styling a site and am doing browser checks on both PC and Mac. With the mac version, which is what I am styling on, it appears to render content in a href slightly different, where it favors the bottom, and on the PC it favors the top. check out the green buttons here: http://kippdelta.web2.sundaramdesign.com/
If you check it on both PC and Mac, you should see the difference.
I'm sorry if this isn't better explained. Please let me know if further information is needed.

  • Cross platform development issue (32-bit and 64-bit)

We are developing an application which runs as a windows service on a Windows 2008 64-bit server; the service runs under the SYSTEM account. The development environment is Visual Studio 2008 using .NET 2.0, on Windows XP 32-bit.
The application runs queries against a remote Oracle 11g database. We have installed "ODAC for Oracle Clients version 11.1.06.21" on the development system and Oracle Client 11.1.0.7.0 from "11107_w2k8_x64_production_client" on the Server installing only the default selection from Oracle Windows Interfaces 11.1.0.7.0. The DLL deployed by our application is Oracle.DataAccess.dll version 2.111.6.20. The installed DLL on the Windows 2008 server is in D:\app\Administrator\product\11.1.0\client_1\ODP.NET\bin\2.x and is Oracle.DataAccess.dll version 2.111.7.0. There is only one Oracle Home on the Windows 2008 server.
Our windows service throws the following exception when run on the server:
Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleException The provider is not compatible with the version of Oracle client at Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleInit.Initialize()
    at Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleConnection..cctor()
We also have a desktop based test program which is built in the same environment and with the same libraries. This application connects to the Oracle server and can run queries with no problems.

    Hi,
A process hang can be caused by many different things.
    1. What type of application are you deploying? Is this hosted (IIS ASP.NET) or client/server (Winform/console application)
    2. Are you able to determine exactly how far the application gets when it appears to hang? Or do you observe this at process startup?
2A. Do you have any sort of application logging that can be turned on to determine where the application is hanging?
    3. Are there any entries being written to the event viewer log that provide any additional information for that process around that time?
    4. If the process starts up or this is hosted, you may consider taking an ADPLUS hang dump of the application process/worker process when it is considered hung. Inspecting the state of the threads may provide some clues.

  • IPhone Cross-platform Sync Issue

    I sync as follows:
    MS Exchange/Outlook 2007/Windows XP SP2 <--> Plaxo <--> iCal/Leopard <--> iPhone/1.1.3
    All works well, except:
Calendar entries: Multi-day, all-day, non-recurring entries created in Outlook sync properly to Plaxo and iCal, but show up on the iPhone extended by one-day; e.g., an event spanning Jan 11-13 shows properly in Exchange, Plaxo and iCal, but shows up in the iPhone as Jan 11-14. When synced back to iCal, these events are NOT extended by one day. Events created in the iPhone and then synced back to iCal, Plaxo and Outlook do not exhibit this behavior. I've upgraded to the latest build of Plaxo, deleted the sync points and iCal calendars and started over, but it still does this. Is there some inconsistency in the Outlook data format that might be causing this? Everything is on Eastern Standard Time.
    Thanks,

Fixed. Plaxo for Outlook update 3.8.0.64 fixed this so that all-day events sync properly. Thanks to Drew at Plaxo support forums for the info.

  • Font issue between PC and Mac. Options?

    Hi.
I have been working for several months on a book that I have designed in InDesign. I was using the PC version of InDesign. I just purchased a new Macbook, and I am now beginning with a trial of InDesign for Mac.
As soon as I tried to imported my .indd file into InDesign on my Mac, I encountered an issue with fonts. Most of the fonts that I had used in my design do not work on the Mac version. InDesign gave me the option to 'Change' to comparable fonts. I figured I would try to see how I can adjust the manuscript and make this work. I immediately encountered other issues (for e.g., Minion Pro is a font that I did manage to use with InDesign in Mac, but it would not let me use the Italics version of Minion Pro. It is important that a number of elements in my book be italics, so I need to have a font that offers the distinction (and ideally, would not make me go back in manually and re-italicize everything.)
I spend about an hour or two researching this issue today. It seems there are a few options (including purchasing/downloading fonts and a few different software programs that handle that.) I would just like advice from those who navigated this issue on my best option/s.
Specifically these are the fonts from my original design on my PC that are missing on the Mac version.
    Adobe Caslon Pro
    Adobe Caston Pro Bold
    Adobe Caslon Pro Italic
    Adobe Devangari Italic
    Adobe Garamond Pro
    Adobe Garamond Pro
    Adobe Garamond Pro Bold
    Adobe Garamond Pro Italic
    Constantia
    Constantina Italic
    Minion Pro Bold Cond
    Minion Pro Italic
    Palatino Linotype
    Palatino Linotype Italic
If there is a free way to obtain these fonts and use them, that would be nice.  If I do obtain, or use replacements files that Mac supports, I forsee another issue: I may very well encounter the same issue down the line when I try to open my design on a PC, or if I send to the printer, and they use a PC. What about cross platform fonts that are supported by different system?
Any advice on how to move forward would be appreciated.

The first respondent indicated that when the design is made into a PDF, then the fonts are embedded and visible across platforms. Are there any situations I should be aware of in which this isn't the case? If that statement is true or generally true, that is good news, and will make me feel a lot more OK about this process.

  • Which product to purchase (cross platform necessary from Mac to PC) Adobe Photoshop 6.0.x to ???

I have ancient Mac photoshop and pagemaker files. i need best cross platform product for windows that can access these files. adobe photoshop is my primary concern. I understand the indesign cs2 will import old school mac photoshop 6.0.x but is not compatible with windows 7 ... thank you.
In particular we use windows 7 x64
So in summary, need to determine which Windows 7 x64 version of Indesign CSxx will still open archaic Mac Adobe files (layouts, EPS, etc).  Or is there a similar product that must be obtained.  I prefer to stick to Adobe products, however, if I must go elsewhere and you can help -- please advise.
Also, if you know what I should obtain, does this product have a trial download option that I can test functionality before purchase?  Warranty when I do buy information -- and return policy in general?
    Many thanks.

PM support has long been pulled from InDesign. You are going to need some old version like CS or CS2 and save an intermediate step to ID files. PS is not a probelm at all. All programs have 30day trials and Adobe has a general 14day return policy. Refer to the product pages on teh website.

  • Cross platform issues with InDesign CS5 or earlier

Potential client would like me (designer on a Mac) to design print docs which they can then edit on their PCs. Would love to hear feedback from others about any cross-platform issues/best practices suggestions. Thanks!

No problem at all, the only thing you have to do is make sure you both have the same fonts in a flavour (Opentype) that you can both read.  So when you send them a Indesign document using these fonts they should be able to open it up on a PC without getting a "missing fonts" warning.  Once you've got that sorted you're away, I do exactly this all the time.
Oh and of course you must have the same version of Indesign!  You can save back one version (or from CS5.5 to CS4) but it's not recommended for this type of workflow.
