Old mail lost

I loaded leopard, but my user information has not been updated.
I can see my information in a locked User folder.
How do I import all my mail, passwords etc.?
MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.5)

My mail is lost, too. I originally had it on Entourage and loaded Leopard and it's not there anymore.
It's like a new window...I didn't back up my e-mail, shoot! Any suggestions?

  • All old mail lost

I opened up my mac Mail software and it showed the setup window like it had never been started before, so I entered the information and then all my sent and received email disappered... how do I get all my mail back... also when I try to save any password in any software... mac mail or fetch it says that "keychain 'login' cannot be found to store 'myname'". please help.

You also need to check the free space on your hard drive, or if partitioned, on the boot partition. The issue you report can result from lack of disk space on the boot volume, and which can lead to overwriting the preference files for Mail.
Normally, if this happens, and you re-enter the account setup info, and then DECLINE to import anything, Mail will rediscover the account folder(s) and be back to normal.

  • Starting Lion Mail without importing old mails?

with the upgrade to Lion OSX, I lost access to my mails!
Starting Lion Mail it asks to import old mails. Only other choice is cancelling the process.
It then spends around 1hour loading (invisibly) old mails into new Lion mail (ca. 260,000 mails.)
Right before the end of the importing process, it breaks up and send error message that some index has been distroyed.... should restart mail... and it would then repair the index... THIS IS NOT THE CASE.
    I am stuck.
Can anyone please tell me, if it is possible to start Lion Mail from scratch preventing it from importing old mails automatically?
I have erased com.mail.plist as well as all folders related to my old emails, but it manages to find the old mails somewhere in the invisible parts of the computer (MacBook Pro).
    Thanks for helping out

Those Mail messages are in the Mail folder of your user's Library folder.  With Mail not running, in the Finder hold down an "option" key while you pull down the "Go" menu.  Select Library from the menu list.  In the resulting Finder window move the folder Mail to the Desktop.  You should now be able to launch Mail without that import problem.  This is a guess, but you may be able to import the contents of specific mailboxes from the saved Mail folder.

  • My old mail is automatically deleted. How do I change this?

After I read my mail and it is sitting in my mailbox, it is deleted. How do I change this so mail stays in my account until I choose to delete it?

This is an AOL issue/problem that comes with accessing an AOL account as an IMAP with an email client such as Mail instead of via the AOL program.
What is an Outlook account? Is this the exchange server account that you are accessing as an exchange account with Mail?
    Your options are as follows:
    (1) Transfer all received messages to a user created "On My Mac" location mailbox (which is stored locally on the hard drive and not associated with any account). This process saves the transferred messages locally on the hard drive and removes the messages from the server at the same time. Do so within 5 days so that read messages are not lost due to AOL purging the server of these messages. With the AOL program, there is a new mail and old mail designation which is not available when accessing the account as an IMAP account with Mail or with any email client such as Mail or Entourage.
This process can be done automatically by creating a Rule in Mail.
    (2) Use another email account besides an AOL account to have these messages sent or forwarded to.

  • Can't find old Mail

I recently changed my POPaccount through mail as my server changed hands. After deleting my old account and restting my new one (with the same mail address), I lost all of my old mail that I had been saving up. Is there any way to retrieve those past letters?
    G5 Power Mac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    You're welcome.
Time Machine isn't a Tiger feature - this will be included with Leopard expected to be released this spring.
Even with Time Machine, nothing can or should take the place of creating and maintaining a backup of all important data saved to an external drive or media.
It isn't a matter of if but when your hard drive has a partial or complete failure and Time Machine will be of no use depending on the failure and especially with a complete failure which I experienced with a G3 PB less than 1-yr old. Without any warning, I experienced a complete hard drive failure and didn't maintain a backup at the time. Apple replaced the hard drive under the standard 1-yr warranty but no existing data was recovered and I lost everything. Time Machine would not have made any difference in this situation but would have made a difference in your situation but the main point is, nothing should take the place of maintaining a regular backup.

  • Mail 2.1 ate my old mail

Hi, I recently upgraded my OS to 10.4.9 from 10.3.x. When I did so, it also updated my Mail app to 2.1. In the process, I seem to have lost ALL of my old received email. Sent mail and addresses are there, and when I try to import, I cannot find a file for my old mail. No, I do not have a recent back up. I know, it's my own fault....
    HELP!
    TIA!

    Hi nycellist.
The conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.x is broken. Take a look at the following thread to better understand the problem:
Help! "You need to take this account online in order to download it."
More specifically, if this is a POP account, the following procedure should allow you to fix the Inbox problem. A similar procedure should allow you to fix other mailboxes that might also be affected:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to fix the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. Create a new folder on the Desktop and name it however you wish (e.g. Inbox Old). It doesn’t need to have an .mbox extension.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/.
    5. Move the files mbox and Incoming_Mail out of INBOX.mbox, into the Inbox Old folder just created on the Desktop. These files contain all the messages that were in the mailbox before the upgrade to Tiger, and maybe even some messages that had been deleted. mbox is the most important. Incoming_Mail may or may not be present.
    6. Move any strangely-named Messages-T0x... folders to the Desktop (not into the Inbox Old folder). These folders are to be deleted after fixing the problem. They are temporary folders created during an import or an indexing process, and Mail should have deleted them when done. Their presence is a clear indication that something didn’t work as expected. If you’ve been using Mail after the conversion and have already tried to fix the problem by rebuilding the mailbox or something like that, they might contain messages that are neither in Messages proper nor in the mbox file, so keep them around until the problem is fixed.
    7. Move everything else within INBOX.mbox, except the Messages folder, to the Trash.
The result of the above should be that INBOX.mbox contains the proper Messages folder only, and the Inbox Old folder on the Desktop contains the mbox and Incoming_Mail (if it exists) files only. Now, proceed as follows:
    8. Open Mail.
    9. The account’s Inbox should properly display in Mail as many messages as *.emlx files are in ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/Messages/. If that’s not the case, select the mailbox in Mail and do Mailbox > Rebuild.
    10. In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Other as the data format, and follow the instructions to import the Inbox Old folder that’s on the Desktop.
As a result of doing the above, some messages may be duplicated now. Andreas Amann’s Mail Scripts has a Remove Duplicates script that you may find useful.
Do with the imported mail whatever you wish. You may move the messages anywhere you want and get rid of the imported mailboxes afterwards.
If all is well and you don’t miss anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
Take a look at the following article (also referenced in the thread I mentioned at the beginning of this post) to learn what you might have done before upgrading to minimize the risk of this happening, and what you may do after fixing the problem to avoid similar issues from happening in the future. DON’T do now what the article suggests, though, as that would make things worse in the current situation:
    Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty
Ask for any clarifications or if you need further assistance.
BTW, if you’re running Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) now, and since this is actually a Mail 2.x issue rather than a Mail 1.x issue, it would have been more appropriate to discuss this in the Mail & Address Book - Tiger forum.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • Turned on AOL on my iPhone4G - It deleted all my "Old Mail"

I have a "Yahoo" mail account on and activated on my iPhone4G running iOS 5.xx and it works great.  My wife has an AOL account I initially loaded into my iPhone but I didn't like seeing all her unread emails showing up in my counter, etc, so I switched it off and she'd check her email from a desktop.  We're now on vacation and she wanted to check her AOL email.  I turned it 'on' in the iPhone, and I can read the new, incomming mail.  However, when I went into the "Old Mail" folder to read some other emails, they deleted automatically deleted!!! Now I cannot find any of the email's I'd saved over the past 3 years anywhere on AOL, either on the iPhone or the computer.  I think I've checked all the files and they're not showing up.  What happened??
    Help please?????

  • How can I get my old mail account back?

I f&%€ up and deleted my old mail account after I had added my new one ( I've changed ISP). So all old mails disappeared.
Is it possible to restore them my self? Or do I have to go to the Mac doctor?
    I'm greatful for all help

    Hi John and thank you.
    I use Mail.
I deleted the settings for the old account by mistake - I just thought I wouldn't need it anymore after having set up the new one - and suddenly the inbox was empty. A not so nice surprise
However I managed to find a folder named Mail with a POP - folder in it, in the trash can, which I dragged to my desktop. But I haven't been able to import it.
I found some useful earlier threads and intructions from some David Gimeno, so I removed the .mbox extension from the INBOX.mbox file.
BUT still, Mail won't import. It says it doesn't find any valid mbox files.
The INBOX.mbox is about 12 Mb, so I recconed there would be something in it.

How do I clean up mail in my icloud?  I have already deleted old mail (from all my e-mail accounts) on all devices, and emptied the junk & deleted files, but it still shows that I am at max on my icloud. What do I do to free up space? (photos & apps do not take up that much room).  When I go to manage storage on any device & it will display how much room each program or app is using, it still shows that my e-mail is taking up the most room.  Is there a way to actually log on to the icloud server to manage what it stored there?  If so, how do I do it?  Also, on a related subject,  why does my mail not sync accross all devices?   ie. when I delete an email on one device, why do I still see it on all my other devices?  How can I change this?
I have an iphone5, ipad2, ipod 4th gen, ipod 3rd gen, all running on my same apple id - but I have a PC not a Mac home computer - is this part of the problem?  Looking to upgrade to a Mac sometime this year...
    Thank-you for the help!

I do have the Time Capsule and spoke to Apple Care here in Sydney about it yesterday.  They told me my mail is not backed up there unless I create a special folder. I just tried ringing them again but Apple Care is closed today...
Mail is backed up automatically. If you make backups automatically, open Mail application and then, open the Time Machine app (in /Applications/Utilities). You will access to the Time Machine interface, and you will be able to see all your mails of all the backups you have, and you will be able to restore them. It means that your mails are backed up onto the Time Capsule

  • Is there any way to keep the old mail, phone, calendar format and yet switch to IOS7?

Is there anyway to keep our old mail, calendar, and phone format and yet use IOS7?  I find the new system so plain that it is difficult to see.  I keep missing new emails because the little numbers are so small they barely show up and the plain white screens are so bright they are hard to look at.  I would just go back but I really like some of the new features.

    Man I am with you!
The new user interface for iOS7 is just dreadful.  I turned down the brightness but the lack of shading or delineation between UI elements makes it difficult to read.
It feels like they're chasing Android.

  • Mail started new again... how do I get my old Mail back?

Mail asked for info like when it's first installed, now all my drafts and marked infos are gone. I want my old mail back!
I found it in the Library... but how do I make it see it now?
I erased the new, but when I opened, there was again
    Strange...

Most such cases happen because of a shortage (even if temporary) of free disk space on your hard drive, or if partitioned, on the boot partition. The preference is overwritten, but not the message data itself.
If this happened, simply re-enter the account setup info, and then be sure to DECLINE any prompt to Import. When the accounts are again set up, Mail can rediscover the existing mailboxes and account folders.

  • After crash, how do stop apple mail (os 10.7.5, applemail 5.3) from pulling in old mail on reboot

I've got a frustrating problem and need your help.
My Mac pro (os 10.7.5) froze so I was forced to push the button to restart.
After reboot, apple mail 5.3 auto opened and pulled in thousands of old mail that were long ago deleted.
Now, is there a way to mass delete the new/old mail that reappeared without losing what mail I wanted to save?
More importantly, how can I avoid this the next time my mac freezes because it's not the first time it's happened and it's does not happen on every crash.
    Please advise
    Thanks

The mail that keeps coming back is what is still sitting on your mail server. If this is a POP mail account you can configure Mail to delete mail that has been downloaded.
Click Mail in the menu bar and select Preferences. In Preferences, click Accounts and select your mail account on the left, then click Advanced. There you can decide on the setting you want: "Remove copy from server after retrieving a message", to for example After one day.
If you have an IMAP account  - say gmail - the process is different. Post back if that is what you have.
