Old mini mac startup issues

Hi there. My work MiniMac has been playing up for a while now. If i press the power button it will start up and work for about 30mins with no problems at all, then it will just die. Nothing. Dead. No matter if i unplug cables, plug back in and hold power button etc etc. Nothing. If i leave it for say 6months then it will work again for about 30mins before just dying as before. So as you can see, i;ve not been able to use it for about a year now. Ideas? thanks

well i cant get it work, so cant install more software. its about 30mins, i dont think it bing exact is to much of an issue. could be the airvent, not sure how to in to clean it though may just get work to send it off to get mended?

Only Macs with an Intel processor can go to 10.6 and higher

  • Is there a way I can use my old mini mac....

Not really, because > DVD or CD sharing: Using Remote Disc does not support full use of the Mac Mini's DVD Drive.
Note: These types of discs or activities are not supported by DVD or CD sharing:
    DVD movies.
    Audio CDs.
Copy protected discs such as game discs.
Install discs for an operating system such as Microsoft Windows (for use with Boot Camp), or Mac OS X.
    Burn a CD or DVD
Your best bet is to pickup an Apple SuperDrive, or better yet a tray loading Mac OS X compatible optical DVD drive.
I have a > LG SuperMulti 24x External USB 2.0 DoubleLayer DVD±CDRW Drive GE24LU20 that works great with all my Mac's.
Other good option are > OWC Mercury Pro's and > LaCie's

  • Mac Startup Issues- tried EVERYTHING.

I have tried everything, I have followed the Apple Support article on start up issues and I'm still not getting anywhere, I have tried the following:
Booting from Installation Disc and running the Disk Utility, when I try to repair the permissions, they appear to be repairing but after I Verify Disk, the permissions still differ.
    Running fsck in single-user mode.
Running in verbacose mode, I get a large string of error messages, I don't know if they'll be any use to anybody?
    Repairing the disk.
Everything it says on the article page I have followed to a T and my MacBook still won't load past the grey screen with the Apple logo, irregularly I boot to the blue screen, in which it changes from a dark blue to a light blue on a loop.
I cannot boot into Safe Mode either. I've tried to re-install the Mac OS X, but there is a tiny scratch on the disc and it refuses to install past 27%. Would Apple send me another disc? Or is there somewhere I could download it?
If anyone has any ideas please help!

If you no longer have your Leopard Install DVD, you may be able to obtain it from Apple Customer Relations - 1-800-767-2775.
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available. If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those -
    http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html
You will need the above in order to run the Repair Disk option.

  • Mac startup issues

Help my mac won't fully start up. I have tried starting in safe mode which doesn't work and then I did disk utility, verified my HD and then tried to repair till it said "repair stopped. Back up files, reformat disk, and restore backed up files". What steps should I take next?

If you do not have any backups, attach an external HDD to your MBP and try to copy as much of your data as you can.
Then install a new HDD in your MBP and reinstall the OS and your user data.
    Ciao.

My iTunes library exists on the external drive under /itunes...

what do i need to do ?
I have found multitude of articles about moving itunes to external drive or other similar things but I don't want to move itunes from the external drive, just change mini mac machines and have everything in itunes the same..
    Thanks

I had already tried that one and got this...
below is screen shot of what is on the new mac mini
and what is on the external drive now connected to the new mac mini..
There are no media files on the mac mini just the library files and on external just media files..
Do I need to copy anything over from the old mac mini ? xml files ? .. the itunes folder on old mini is about 840mb in size which looks to have artwork ect ? .. I am fairly computer literate, but this one has me stumped.. ?

  • Compare a G5 to a Mini Mac

I have recently acquired an old G5 (June 2004) It has 2 X 2.0 GHz PPC processors, 1.25 HGz bus speed, 512 MB RAM, NVIDA GE Force 5200 Video running MAC 10.3.9.
How does it compare to my old Mini Mac, which my daughter has, which is a 1.83 MHz Intel Core Dual, 1 GB RAM, 667 MHz bus and 2M L2 Cache per processor.
She is only using the Mini Mac for various iLife applications and web based stuff (Myspace, Facebook, some video stuff).
    Thanks

How do you want to compare?
In terms of electrical power usage, the Mac mini wins.
In terms of flexibility (such as for upgrades and number of displays), the Power Mac wins.
When you start comparing performance, you would need to make things as equal as possible. For example, the Power Mac only has 512mb of RAM, so that would significantly hinder performance. The Mac OS X version each one has would also impact performance. So if these factors were as equal as possible...
In terms of pure computing power, the Power Mac G5 wins.
In terms of +real world+ computing power, it depends. If the software is a PowerPC app, the Power Mac would be faster, because Intel Macs would need to use Rosetta to translate. If it is universal and graphically intensive, the Power Mac would probably be faster. However, some universal software is better optimized for Intel these days, so the Mac mini might be faster. And some software is now Intel only, so the Power Mac would not even be able to run it.
She is only using the Mini Mac for various iLife applications and web based stuff (Myspace, Facebook, some video stuff).
Are you asking which one would be better for her use?

  • Mini Mac 10.4.11 to Mini Mac Server Snow Leopard

Im interesting in getting a 2010 mini mac with server.
    BUT I have a mini mac 10.4.11 with photoshop, lightroom,etc. (Actions,history, etc)
I know that I can't transfer from 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard, Do I HAVE TO upgrade the Snow Leopard onto my OLD Mini Mac 10.4.11 and then get Firewire Cable to trasfer my Applications such as Photoshop and Lightroom over no problem?
It would be a pain in the a** to do all over again with those install adobe, etc!
Hope theres something to make my life abit easy!
    Cheers!

No, you do not have to upgrade the older Mac mini to Snow Leopard in order to migrate your stuff to the new mini. However, Adobe products are some of the hardest to migrate because they have files spread all over the place and sometimes they do not all get migrated. Many folks find that everything works better with a fresh install on the new computer with 3rd party applications, like Adobe.
Your older Mac mini may have FireWire 400 and the new Mac mini has FW800, so you will need the proper cable, FW400 to FW800 to connect the two minis with FW. But you can also migrate over a wireless connection or an Ethernet connect as well. The latter two are just slower than FW.

  • HT1544 can I install Leopard 10.5 on my mini-mac 1.66Gz, intel Duo Core, 512 MB, 667 Hz

My 1st post.  Can I  install Leopard 10.5 on my old Mini-Mac 1.66GHz, intel Duo Core 512 MB, 667 Hz.
    Thank you very much

    Hello & a warm welcome!
Yes you can, but 10.6 would be cheaper...
    Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
        *  Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
    minimum system requirements
        * 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
    Classic/OS9 Apps no longer supported.
May be available from Apple again, or not...
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4720126?tstart=0
Trouble is Apple no longer sells it, check eBay & such for the Retail version, not the Gray Discs...
    http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=mac+os+x+leopard+retail+10.5
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.

  • Mac Mini and Tiger issue.

Ok, I'm thoroughly confused here. I just recently reformatted my Mac Mini. We had a power outage the other day and it corrupted a boot file. So, I reformatted, no problem.
So, the Mac restarts, I put in disk two, and it finishes installing. It restarts and comes to the Starting Mac OS X screen. The blue bar goes all the way across and then I get the light blue screen with my mouse doing the "busy" icon for over 2 hours. I'm not sure it's supposed to do that. Anyone have any suggestions?

  • 2nd Gen Mac Mini, iTunes Streaming issues

Feeling flushed I've replaced my ATV1, 1st gen Time Capsule and Mac Mini and moved them down to the retirement home we're working on.
One of the reasons I replaced the Mac Mini was everytime I booted up I had to run diagnostics to get the airport running effeiciently . However, in the other place still using the TC as the wireless router it appeared to working much better. Then I added the old ATV1. Again for a week things were great.
Then...... while streaming music to the ATV1 and an Airport Express upstairs I noticed it started coughing and cutting out. I'd have to reconnect the speakers (ATV1 in the same room & AE upstairs) and restart the track. After experimenting what seems to be happening is:
When playing iTunes to the ATV1 and AE Speakers if I trying and download something large it cuts out, and if open Airport Utility or iStumbler (checking the power on each device for wireless power) it coughs badly recovering intermitantly. I can internet to my hearts content without any problems and up load massive documents to iDisk without interupting the music????
Apart from the AE ('n') they are all 'g' devices. iStumbler is showing relatively low signal strength for TC (41% ish about 20 feet away) and the AE (19% immediately upstairs above the Mini). As we're on the beach the only two other neighbours signals are showing and are really weak.... so the 'noise' is almost nothing.
In a wireless network siutation does the Mini talk directly to the speakers or does it have to go through the TC?? Is the Mini card dying or is it the TC? Caould I use another AE ('n') plugged into the Mini as the wirelss card?
Or is it the ATV1 dragging the signal down?
sigh... it was all going so well......

    Thanks that's really helpful.
Sorry; aren't the old Mini, TC and ATV1 all g and the new AX n? Same principle though. I thought the AX was allegedly b/g/n compatible?
Should have know the AX might be the prob. I had an issue with one here. It was too near the ATV1 and was interfering with its visibility. When I seperated them further (distance) the both became visible and signals improved. The trouble is because of the house construction I need a boost upstairs. The AX works great for internet extension.
Did I read somewhere someone reset an AX for g only?
    Cheers.

i have a new mini mac and i want to use my existing external hard drive but it needs to be reformated how do i do this without loosing all my old photos?

    Formatting will erase the drive.
You need to copy the photo's to either your old computer, the Mac Mini or to a new external drive and then decide what to do with your existing external drive.
For example: You could use one External drive for Photo's and one external drive for Time Machine to backup both your Mac Mini and the Photo drive.

    Hello,
You can't upgrade to any faster, & especially not to an Intel CPU needed to run Lion/10.7 for full iCloud usage.
You can have limited use of iCloud the way it is, you can view all of iCloud in a Browser, You can use Find my Phone I hear, & you can use IMAP Mail for syncing, but no other syncing.

  • How do I transfer files from my old Power Mac Mini to my new one?

Oops...thought I had to write the question in the above spot.
Question:  How do I transfer my files from my old Power Mac Mini to my new Intel based Mac Mini?  From what I read, I needed a 40/80 cable, which I bought.  However, I only have one monitor.
(I tried to copy files onto a blank dvd, but it wouldn't format and kept spitting the disk out) (?)

Jolly makes a good point about screen sharing.
I prefer the firewire approach just because I have had more problems with ethernet connections than with firewire connections.  Both options work, firewire has just been easier for me when the operating system on the machines are different.  Read the options and post back if you would like additional coaching.
