Old PC to new MBP Uni + iPhone. Transfering?

I did some looking and haven't seen this answered so if it has been, I apologize.
I just purchased a Macbook Pro unibody. I have all my iTunes music on my old Dell desktop. I'd like to use the MBP now as my main computer. I have a iPhone that is homologated with my Dell. I know how to get the iTunes files oer (I think) easy enough. I'm just going to use an external drive that I have. Then dump the files into the iTunes library on the MBP (right?) But how do get my iPhone to recognize the MBP as it's "home" computer without loosing all my apps and info? And will iTunes have issues if I just move the files over like I planned? Last time I was messing around with iTunes (one of the updates) I had to reimport all my music, not fun.
So basically, I need to get my music and phone on my MBP, suggestions?
Thanks for readying this mess!

The 3rd party apps will be reinstalled from the MBP, and unfortunately that means the app data (e.g. gas mileage) will be will be erased. Native apps (like the iPhone Notes app) will not be affected.
One possible workaround would be to manually move the iPhone backup from your PC to the Mac. App data are backed up when you back up the iPhone, so performing a Restore to the 'old' backup after you sync to the MBP should restore your app data (I'll admit this is theoretical, as I've never tried it). First, move the backup from the PC location to the Mac location.
XP location: C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
Vista location: C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\MobileSync\Backup
Mac location: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup (the ~ means your home folder)
Next, check iTunes > Preferences > Devices tab and see if the backup shows up. If so, perform a Restore (on the Summary tab), and choose the backup to restore from.

  • Transfering Music from old computer to new MBP laptop HELP!

I nees to transfer ALL of my iTunes music to my new MBP, can I just put all of my music onto a flash drive and then deauthorize that computer, then put songs from flashdrive on the MBP and authorize that computer? If I do this will my music still be organized like it was on my ild PC? Like album name, artist, title, etc? Answer ASAP please and thanks in advance!

Okay. What do you want from this process? Do you want iTunes to appear exactly as it did on your old computer?  The way I have described several times before tells you how to do this.  Copy the WHOLE ITUNES FOLDER from your Finder (you do not say what source computer) or Windows browser or whatever, to the flash drive.  Drag it from the flash drive to your new computer and replace the iTunes folder on the new computer (I presume you have nothing in it now).  Start iTunes and everything will appear identical to your old computer.  Playlists, artwork, everything.  Three major steps. Drag, (move flash drive to other computer), drag, open iTunes.
The video tells you in a somewhat long-winded (and in my opinion not necessarily best) way to end up copying just your media files to a flash drive.  It then adds them all back into iTunes where if all works well iTunes will end up processing them as though it has never seen them before. If that's what you want, fine, because that's what it does.  If the tags are correct on the files you will see the names, etc., but with the qualifiers I mentioned before.  You say you want them organized like they were on the old computer.  For most people this means ratings and playcounts and playlists.  That is not what you will get if you drag just media from drive to drive via the flash drive.  You will only accomplish that using the whole folder method I have described.  If you do not want your old playlists well, I guess you can do the video method, but even then my method is easier and you can always delete unwanted playlists.
The video method is essentially the same process if the source computer is a Mac, again if your goals is to start over with a fresh library but your old media files.

  • Transferring Files from old PB to new MBP

Hey I just got a new MBP and I have been using a Powerbook G4 for a few years. I want to transfer my stuff from the PB to the MBP but I dont want to transfer all the junk and random stuff I have accumulated, just some key folders like My Docs and Music and Photos and all that fun stuff. I have never used the Migration utility thing that you can use when you first start a new Mac. Should I use this? I was also just thinking about using Target Disk Mode and throwing a Firewire 800 between the two laptops. Any thoughts on that method? Thanks a lot.

    daniel123456,
Firewire 800 rocks for transferring between the machines (this is what I used when migrating from my PB). I do not recommend using the Migration Assistant, however, especially given your desire to transfer limited stuff.
I would connect the two, with the PB in TDM, then simply drag what you want into your new HOME folder on the Macbook Pro.

  • New MBP with iPhone-like audio inputs. Do I need special adaptor?

I have a brand new MBP with the iPhone audio inputs/outputs. Do  I need a special adaptor to use the speakers I was using before or can I just plug them in? How about for a microphone. IIRC those old ones were RCA plugs?

just realized i had made another post here long time back and it has a reply that covers what i need.

  • HDD with Mac OS X from old to the new MBP - possible?

    Hi,
recently I found that the power of my MBP (Mb134) is not enough - I'm running a virtual machine and often used to compile a big project.
So I put my eye on the new MBP line. It has faster RAM and allows 8Gb (yeah, even 15" can do this, its just "unsupported").
The only question left: Can I take my 320Gb HDD from my current laptop and install it to my new one with no problems?
Or can I then simply boot from my old HDD using an external USB case?
    Cheers,
    Alex

The Mac OS X version on the old computer's hard drive can't start up the new MacBook Pro; a new copy of the OS will need to be installed from the new computer's original disks before it can be used as the startup disk.

  • Old External to New MBP cable question (Time sensitive)

I have a new MBP (purchased late january 2011). New external drives all connected properly and working. However, I need to access some old files for tax purposes (and that is why this is a time sensitive question.) These files were kept on a 60GB, small, portable drive: SmartDisk FireLite Model #FWFL60-N. This drive connected to my old MBP with a 4-pin firewire cable (wire has IEEE 1394 printed on it.) Obviously that cable is outdated for my new MBP. Question: Is there some type of wire (or conversion adaptor) I can purchase that will allow me to connect this old drive to the new computer? I never thought I'd need those old files -- but tax season has me scrambling for help or advice. Thanks!

You need a 9-pin to 4-pin cable or adapter. For example this one from Macsales.

Similar are available from Amazon and other places. [Best Buy lists one (for a higher price)|http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dynex%26%23153%3B-+6'+FireWire+9-Pin+to+4-PinCable/9539092.p?id=1218121950002&skuId=9539092&st=firewire&cp=1&lp=4]so if you are near a Best Buy, perhaps they'll have it in stock, if you need it sooner.

  • Old HDD in new MBP. Will TC attempt to backup the entire drive?

I just got a new MBP and I want to swap drives from the old MB to the new. Will TC treat the new computer with the old drive as a totally new system and attempt a full backup or will it just continue to do incremental backups as before?
Thx for any info and advice

    Yup.
You should get the prompt in #B5 of [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum). But no matter how you answer it, Time Machine will do a full backup of the new Mac.

  • Upgrading HDD on new MBP 15" and transfering all Data and settings from 2011 model to 2012 one

    Hi all,
I have just purchased a new 2012 MBP 15" (Non-retina) machine as well as a hybrid 750GB drive from Seagate and 16GB RAM upgrade from Crucial. Both machines are running the latest versions of Lion. What I would like to do is the following:
Upgrade the HDD & RAM in the new 2012 MBP - I think it is the same procedure as the 2011 model (which I have already done using Carbon Copy Cloner)
Transfer all the data, settings, programmes files, docs etc to the new 2012 MBP and new drive
Q1. Would I have to clone the current HDD in the 2012 MBP with the new hybrid one first and then install into the machine before transferring the data from the 2011 machine?
Q2. Or - Could I just clone the current HDD in the 2011 model using CCC to the new Hybrid HDD and then instal it into the new 2012 MBP?
Whats the best and safest way to achieve this please? Any advice very welcome!
    Many Thanks

So, everything went fairly well. It started out looking like it was going to take 2.5 hours, but it ended up taking about 5-6 (I think - I went to sleep).
A couple of observations - at first I didn't see where it restored everything, but I later saw that when I logged out that it had created my user account as a separate login.
Some things didn't transfer - most everything did, but there were a few things with my Parallels VM that did not. I have to get to the bottom of that. It did make me re-register once I launched it.
    On the hardware specifically:
    1. I am not yet noticing the performance bump that I thought I would going to the i5 processor - seemed snappy when I first had it on with OS only - but so far not noticeably faster than my Core 2 Duo 2.4.
    2. battery - way too early to tell, but I am hoping the battery needs time to condition itself and figure out who it is (battery life was my #1 reason for buying this) - right now I am on battery power and have 79% remaining or 2hrs. 2 hours??!! This is supposed to be a 8-9 hour battery. Hoping time works this out. Brightness if only up about 20%, on wifi, keybaord backlighting fairly dim. Nothing coming over from my old machine would have affected this, would it have? (I do know that when the machine was empty with just the OS on it, it was reading about 8 hrs remaining). So much for living on the edge and going to the office without my power adapter today.
    3. Heat - my 13" was not hot on the bottom - this one is - on the back left part of the unit. Reminding me of my Powerbook G4. Not very lap comfortable. ??
    Any thoughts?

  • Changing from Old PC to New PC with iPhone 3G?

Hello, everyone... I have a 3G iphone.  I recently bought a new PC and want to get rid of the old PC... my query is how to I transfer my iPhone from the old PC to the new PC so that the new PC become the main sync PC. Can anyone help me?

Transfer your entire iTunes library from the old PC to the new PC, or from a backup of the old PC. It is a folder in your Music or My Music folder. Do this before launching iTunes on the new computer, or, if you have already launched it, quit it before doing the copy.
Download and install the latest version of iTunes (10.4.1) to the new computer.
Open iTunes on the new computer and Authorize it in the iTunes store.
Open iTunes on the old computer and DEAUTHORIZE it in the iTunes store.
Connect the phone but DO NOT SYNC (to be safe before connecting it go to iTunes Preferences, Devices, and check the box to not automatically sync).
If you have purchased music or apps on the iPhone that are not in your iTunes library choose Transfer Purchases from the iTunes File menu.
Go to the Info tab and set up contacts and calendar sync to a desktop application.
Put at least one contact and one calendar entry into the desktop apps.
    Sync.

  • Moving music from old mac to new mac via iPhone

I have synced my iPhone with my iMac since I got it (July 07). I now have a Macbook and I want to transfer everything from my iMac iTunes library to my Macbook. Can I do this with my iPhone without messing up my iPhone. I have about 250 songs and few ringtones that I need to move to my Macbook. I also have about 40 photos and lot of contact information on my iPhone. All help will be appreciated!
I have both songs I bought off iTunes and songs from cd's, if this helps.

No. The iphone is not a storage device. It is designed not to allow this.
You can use migration assistant to move everything from your old Mac to your new Mac. I have done this and it works great.
You can transfer itunes purchases, however. In itunes, with iphone attached, click File>Transfer Purchases.
Photos are optimized for viewing on iphone and are a reduced quality. Like music the photo sync is one way - computer to iphone. You can e-mail them to yourself one at a time. They will be of reduced quality.
Again, Migration Assistant (included with your Mac) is intended for this very thing. Why not use it?

    WHAT DO I DO????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

    Hello yungflorida04,
In addition to the information provided by the other knowledgeable responders, there is one thing that hasn't been mentioned. You can transfer songs that were purchased from iTunes by following this article:

For you're dealing with non-iTunes purchases, follow their suggestions.

  • Boot camp using XP on new MBP. Fat32 or NFST?

My old MBP has a 32 gig HD windows fat32 XP. The only problem I had with it is not being able to update to SP3. I kept getting an error message saying Not enough memory on HD which was nonsense and I tried to get it resolved but gave up because of the stuff you had to go through on the windows side, Microsoft.. Now I know why I have a Mac.
Does anyone know if its because I had fat32 and it limited the file size to 4 gig and that upgrade required to make a file much larger for backup when installing that update?
So now here I am with my new MBP and need to make a Bookcamp partition and did using NTFS but haven't finished yet. I could copy over my winclone backup from my old mbp but it probably will not work since I need new drivers for the new mac.
    any thoughts?

    Hi,
the 'additional 4MB error' is a common error that surfaces sometimes.
    See here for a solution http://www.windowsreference.com/general/error-there-is-not-enough-disk-space-whe n-installing-sp3/
It has nothing to do with using FAT32 or NTFS.
Due to the different hardware used in your old and your new MBP the restore of Windows with WinClone will most likely not work.
Plus you cannot change the BootCamp Windows partition size when restoring a FAT32 Windows.
WinClone can only do that with a NTFS Windows.
Personally I would choose to install Windows new on your new MBP and start with a fresh Windows.
    Hope it helps
    Stefan
