Old PC user trying to setup Apple Tv

Hi All,
I just bought my first mac (27 inch one) and waiting for it to arrive. I also bought Apple Tv and cant wait to use it.
Is it ok and easy to setup the Apple tv with my pc and then swap with the new imac when it finally arrives? Or should I just wait?
I've read all the manuals etc and it tells you how to setup the apple tv with the tv etc but do you copy all the data onto it via the home network? I dont have this yet until my new imac comes. So wondering if I can just copy my itunes content to the apple tv and enjoy it now and then later add my new imac.
Im sorry for the silly questions but the instructions dont really tell me much about how the whole thing works. It really only deals with setting up the cords and the network.
I dont want to do anything which is going to complicate things so if you think I should just wait then please let me know.
(Cant wait to get my first imac - yippee).

There are 3 ways to get media playing on AppleTV:
1 - Sync it with a PC/Mac iTunes library - copies of media from iTunes transfer to AppleTV and can be played back, any extra stuff that won't fit will stream automatically across the network when needed if itunes is running. You clearly need a network for this to work. You can only have 1 sync library, and if you then change it when the iMac arrives to that iTunes library eveyrthing on AppleTV wipes clean to allow a fresh sync.
2 - Stream (shared library) only from an iTunes library - up to 5 streaming libraries called 'Shared'libraries can be set up - iTunes must be running for these - might be a good option if your network is up to it now as you won't waste time syncing stuff that'll later delete.
3 - Purchase stuff on AppleTV from iTunes Store and watch it - you really ought to set up a sync library first to use this as otherwise you can't back up purchases made on AppleTV to the computer/backup media. Needs networked internet connection to access store.

Simplest way is to use Target Disk mode:

and hook to another Mac and use CCC or SuperDuper and clone your HD to another drive.
You could also pull the drive out of your MBP and use an external USB case or SATA - USB dongle to hook it to another Mac.

The iPhone is new, has never been used. When asked if I want to set it up as a new phone, restore from an iTunes backup, or my iCloud backup I selected iCloud. It then askes for me to sign in with my Apple ID, I then agree to the terms, then it asks for me to sign into my friends Apple ID. She and I have used each other's computers in the past so I assume this is where her information is coming from. The problem is she no longer had that email or Apple ID and has no way of gaining access to it and therefor I am unable to proceed.
I suppose my question is, how can I remove her information from mine so I can setup my new phone using iCloud. Also, I have already checked my Apple ID online and nowhere on my account is her information listed.

To get it to your new Apple ID, you would need to change it back to your old on so you can turn off Find My Device and turn it off. Once that is done, change it back to what you are currently using now. Take a look at the article below for more information.

Scroll down and tap Sign Out, then tap Sign Out to confirm. If you're using iOS 7 or earlier, tap Delete Account, then tap Delete to confirm.
Tap Keep on My [Device] or Delete from My [Device]. In either case, your data remains in iCloud and will be updated on your device when you sign in to iCloud again.
Enter the password for your previous Apple ID.
Change your Apple ID to the new email address that you want to use. You'll need to verify the email address.
Return to Settings > iCloud and sign in with your new Apple ID.

Trying to setup systemd user instance

Hi guys!
For the past few days I have been trying to setup systemd to run a user instance (user is 'hans'). Sadly, I have been unable to find a lot of detail in doing this, so much of my work has been trial and error. Just recently I learned about the [email protected] and also about loginctl enable-linger. However to what degree they are related to setting up a user instance, I do not know. I set the user 'hans' to 'linger' using the loginctl enable-linger hans command, however I think I might have misunderstood the significance of the command in relation to what I am trying to do.
What I want to for user 'hans' to have his own service file, i.e. irssi.service, and start/stop/enable/disable/etc that service independently of the system. I realize that I could use sudo and configure it to only allow certain commands, and more than that have individual 'system' services for each user, i.e. hansirssi.service, janeirssi.service, joeirssi.service, etc., but I don't want to have to do that unless there is no other option.
So Question 1:
Is it possible to setup up systemd user instances as I envision it? Or have I misunderstood something?

The system is installed in a Proxmox virtual machine with a virtio virtual HDD and standard setup. It is a headless system. I have a complete systemd conversion as per the wiki plus polkit 0.107-2 for use with 'loginctl'.

The unit files have no [Install] section. They are not meant to be enabled using systemctl.

Question 2:
Why would dbus reject the 'messages', is there something I need to configure (permissions,...?) in order to get this to work?
I suspect that it is my lacking knowledge to blame for this problem, which is why I have sought help here.

I just went through the install process, read through the user-session-units doc, I was finally able to get the user instance working, no Dbus errors . However I decided to make sure and run 'dbus-monitor' within the user 'hans' and I got the following error message:
Failed to open private bus connection: Failed to connect to socket /run/user/1000/dbus/user_bus_socket: No such file or directory
I checked and there is no such file, however I checked the dbus.socket:
[root@ru user]# cat /usr/lib/systemd/user/dbus.socket
[Unit]
Description=D-Bus System Message Bus Socket
[Socket]
ListenStream=%t/dbus/user_bus_socket
And dbus.service:

I just restarted the system to see if my symlink worked for the user-session service. It did, sort of, however the following error occured during boot:

I can not get connected as the ABS keeps trying to dial up(the old phone number). When I tried to change my network settings an annoying popup window says "your network settings have been changed by another application'. I have no idea what the message is all about and when I close this window it immediately pops up again and prevents me -as far as I can tell -from changing my Airport settings? I need advice on how to get this wireless setup done. Maybe a reset? or something else? I have the DSL phone line plugged into WIndsteam Seimens Speedstream 4200 modem and then the ethernet (yellow) wire from the WIndsteam Seimens Speedstream 4200 modem to the port on the dome that is a circle of dots.

1)Can you explain how using the AEBS as a bridge will work with the Seimens Speedstream4200?
As a bridge, the AEBS will basically become a wireless access point. This will allow the AEBS to provide a wireless network, but still allow the Speedstream to provide NAT & DHCP services for the wireless clients connected to the AEBS. If the AEBS was left as a router, you would have a double-NAT condition which isn't necessary bad in itself, but would create a second subnet. That would make it more difficult for clients connected to the AEBS to access clients connected to the Speedstream.
2) Is there a link that will guide me through the steps to set the AEBS as a bridge?
You can easily reconfigure the AEBS as a bridge using the AirPort Utility.
ref: AirPort Utility > Select the AEBS > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
3)Can I just connect the DSL phone line to the AEBS and eliminate the Speedstream4200?
Unfortunately no. The AEBS does not have a built-in DSL modem. You will still need the Speedstream to provide this function.

TS3274 I have the original iPad- 18 mos old. I tried to download an app that required flash player. Went to the apple store and was told to update my software to iOS 5.1.1. I did and now everything I had previously installed as apps are frozen. :( HELP!

I have the original iPad- about 18 mod old. I tried to download an etool program and it required iflashplayer. My iPad wouldn't do it. I went to the apple store and they told me to update my software to iOS 5.1.1 which I did . Now none of the apps I had installed prior to this work. The icons are still on my screen but when you touch them, it just blinks and nothing happens..like the screen is frozen. How do I restore all of these apps and favorites that I had on prior to this update? Please speak in very non- tech terms if possible. I am VERY low tech unfortunately!

Welcome to Apple Communities
You must use iTunes. Connect your device to your computer, open iTunes, select your device in the sidebar and press Restore. Then, you can restore your device from a backup, and sync the device with iTunes to transfer your files to it pressing Sync button

1. Don't confuse "Apple ID" with iTunes Account ID. You can have many Apple IDs but only one iTunes account active at a time.
2. If you "changed" your iTunes account ID, you actually have 2 accounts - one under the old name plus the new name.
3. You can't merge the accounts - they remain separate. Apps purcahsed under the old account name will update ONLY WHEN THE PHONE IS SIGNED IN TO THE OLD ACCOUNT NAME and visa versa.
4. Likewise, you can sync only the apps, music, media purchased under the account the phone AND iTunes are signed in to.

I am running the im/sbin/configure script. I'm trying to setup im to store user props in ldap. Can someone tell me what bind dn, I need to specify. It will be whatever the default is. I'm not sure how to find this.

The default bind dn is normally "cn=Directory Manager".

I live in an apartment complex and the router is in my roommates room. ANY suggestions? I'm at the point where I may return this because it has been nothing but a hassle. I'm also using my MacBook Pro as the homesharing with iTunes up to date.

I had a similar issue wuth my new Apple TV. If you (or your roommate) are able to change the router firewall settings, do that first. I don't know the ports that you need, except that 123 is one of them (to set the time). Then restart the Apple TV. See if that will get you through the activation process. I actually ended up restoring mine to factory settings, but I'm not sure if that step was really necessary.
I understand your frustration, though. Getting the Apple TV to work was such a pain -- it almost feels like it is not really an Apple product.

Hi Allan, thanks for that. I've already set up a log in for my wife and that is all working fine. The problem is that when she logs in and opens iTunes and trys to associate her library with her iTunes account she gets the error message "This computer is already associated with another iTunes account". Whilst this is true, the computer is associated with my iTunes account under my separate log in, which should have nothing to do with hers. If she transfers the association to her account it will lock me out of my content on my log in for 90 days - I'm trying to work out how to associate each of the log in accounts with a separate iTunes account so we can access our music independently of one another without locking each other out. Hope that makes sense!
