Old printer/New mac

I have an old LaserWriter Select 360 I would like to use with my new ProMac but I can't seem to "add a printer" through the Printer Utility program. I am using a Belkin parallel to USB adapter to connect to the Mac. Since Mac is plug & play, I was told this should work. I have also tried via an AsanteTalk (which I used on my G4) connecting to the ethernet port as suggested by other postings on this topic. No success. Does anyone know of an adapter which permits connectivity of older printers to the new Macs?

sbuff22,
You mentioned that you have an Asante device.
Look for one of these legacy devices to do the job:

This model, for example, AsantePrint AP1002 (thick/thin), offers a downloadable pdf that discribes what you are looking for.
http://www.asante.com/downloads/legacy/apap8igra.pdf
This site:
http://www.asante.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3267
will give you a quick tutorial on what it takes to plug old into new. The printer model is different but the concept is the same. You must translate USB or ethernet printing commands into Appletalk networked printing commands that the printer can understand.
The Asante support site will give more detailed information on drivers and devices.
USB was created to make PC peripheral devices more consumer friendly and plug and play like a Mac. However, you still need to be aware of language differences. In the old days, if you plugged an Imagewriter printer into the printer port and had AppleTalk active, when you turned the printer on, it would begin printing a bunch of gibberish. That was the non-AppleTalk printer trying to make sense of a different language.
Plugging an AppleTalk device into a USB port gives the same result, gibberish. You just do not see it translated to charachters on the printed page.
Your USB to Parallel adapter is taking two steps. Translating USB to parallel, then the Select 360 makes a second translation. The Select was designed to auto detect print commands from Macs and PCs on a network.
If you are only connecting one printer to one computer, the USB option might work just fine. Otherwise, using an EtherPrint converter would allow the Select to join a faster network and minimize multiple translations in print commands. As for the first link, you can disregard any discussion of hubs and routers.
This site gives a topic list that might help you locate your specific model:
http://www.asante.com/forums/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=12
This link gives a discussion of a wireless option:
http://www.asante.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3106&whichpage=2
Here is the Asante Legacy products site:
http://www.asante.com/support/LegacyDownloads.asp
One final note, you can find ethernet capable printers for $25 and toner cartridges for the Select may not be as easy to find as ones for the 16/600 PS Laserwriter.

  • How do I move my PlayLists from old to new Mac?

Just got a new Mac with Lion on it.
I have moved my iTunes Library collection over from old computer to new one.
But, how can I move all my old 'PlayLists' from my other machine to my new one as I don't want to spend days re-making them all?
    Thanks

The iTunes Library.itl file is a database of the songs in your library and the playlists you've created. Some song-specific data is saved in this file. If you delete the file, iTunes creates a new, empty copy when you open the application, but any playlists, song ratings, comments, or other information you created is lost.
Find the file on your old Mac and copy it to your new Mac.
Read this for details:  What are iTunes library files:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660

  • Iphoto library from old to new mac

I just upgraded to Macbook pro retina display.
I have all my photos in iphoto on my older macbook.
I use faces on every photo and instead of just copying the photos, I want to make sure I do not lose anything (like faces desigantions).
    How can I do this?
I also have a time capsule that has many backups from my macbook.
    Thank you

Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formed Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • Transferring from old to new Mac

I would like to transfer some of the files, apps etc on our old Mac G4 to a new Mac Mini. Problem is we only have one monitor. Any thoughts on the best way? G4 is running on 10.4.11 and Mini has the latest. We do have a Powerbook as well.

  • Transfer from old to new Mac impossible

I can't transfer the information from old G5 to a new Mac Pro 8 core. Using T mode, as described, transfer doesn't occur after two hours at all. There is a window "Transferring information" but nothing happens. Using SuperDuper! or Migration Assistant from OS10.4.10 to copy the entire bootable volume from the external HD, is impossible. However, it's possible to copy the old volume to a second, non startup disk, but without libraries, which is worthless.
Do I have to manually transfer the libraries to the new computer in order to use the old applications? It's going to take for ever. I have no idea why the simple transfer from the old Mac to the new doesn't work as advertise.

When you booted up the new machine the first time, did you use the migration assistant? If not, you might want to try using the Restore disk and restore the Mac Pro to its factory state. Also, take a look at:

  • I have an old and new mac and used transfer manager to put the old mac on the new so that i have both users on one computer but now I can only log in as the new and as guest so cant access my old computer docs on this newer mac.  Help!

Hello I have just sold my old macbook and so transfered all my data to my newer macbook using transfer manager.  This allowed my to login on the newer computer under either the old or new username so I could access both computers' data on my newer computer.  Last night that worked but today I can only access my newer user and a guest user.  Where did my old user name and all the data go after the transfer?  Help please! I have to give the buyer the old computer today!

I am not familiar with "transfer manager." Did you perhaps use the Migration Assistant? What operating system is installed on your new computer?
If you look in your hard drive, in the Users folder, do you see a folder with the name from your user on your old computer?
    Best of luck.

  • My old and new macs were stolen during migration. Does this mean they are logged in to my account?

I was transferring data from my MacBook Air (2011) to my new MacBook Pro using Migration Assistant over wi-fi which took around 30 hours so I left them both at home to complete. Both laptops were then stolen in a burglary. I have tried Find My Mac (on the Air) and it reports being Locked. I haven't Locked it and the Lock and Erase options are greyed out. I want to know if my account is still logged in and what precautions I should be taking?

FYI, You might be able to get your Serial Numbers attached to your Apple ID in:
    https://getsupport.apple.com/GetproductgroupList.action
    Or look up your purchases.
    http://store.apple.com/us/account/home
They could have interrupted your mirgration. Keep an eye out doing google, yahoo searches for your serial numbers. Look on Craigslist and e-bay and ask questions and for serial numbers to check specifications. Always notify the police they can help with pawn shops and other things.
I also thought you might want additional information on how to track it even without anti-theft software Like iCloud, Dropbox, Gmail, etc.. If you have these report those programs to the police as they can be used to track it.
You can use Anti-Theft programs like Prey or LoJack if installed before they get stolen.

  • Sorry, new.  How to get rid of files left from firewire transfer from old to new mac shows up in finder.

When I transferred files by firewire from a macbook to a macbook (snow leopard) I find some type of files in the finder of the newer mac.   They look like
user files and appear to show network connections or something I do not recognize, I don't seem to be able to delete these files for some reason.  Is there
any way short of formatting and starting over please??
    Thanks

The best method is to archive the contents of the TC to a disk.. archive is available via the airport utility.
Simply plug in a USB drive large enough to store all the material presently on the TC, 1TB or 2TB or 3TB.. whichever model it is.
Archive I have drawn red box around.
Once the archive has completed ..
Use the Erase disk.. just the Quick erase is ok.. takes a couple of min and then you have a nice empty drive to start loading TM backups on.

  • Old printer, new router

I'm trying to setup the old (venerable, reliable, awesome) hp psc 750xi to the newest Linksys e4200 wireless router (*wired*).  I'm running Win7 and can use the printer just fine when directly connected via USB.
When I attempt to connect it to the USB networked-printer port on the back of the router, and run the CISCO Connect program, it cannot find the printer. Linksys says (of course) it's HP's fault and I have an out-dated driver... obviously a lie since hp uses the in-OS driver from Win7.
    Any ideas?

    Hello kevinturman.
The drivers would have to be reinstalled in order to configure the unit to connect to the new router.

  • Migrate email from old to new mac (outlook to entourage)

    Hello.
Anyone have any ideas on how to migrate email messages from an old imac (OS 9.2) to a new one (OS X). The old machine is running Outlook and the new one is Entourage. There are ways to save individuals messages as text and then move them over, but that is a lot of saving (one at a time). I don't see an export option in Outlook.
    Thanks for any advice.

  • KVM with DVI and mini DP compatibility? old and new mac pro to one monitor?

i need to buy one of these to replace a belkin model that i think may have failed (either that or it is my video card) and i just started to wonder if i should spend the money on a KVM switch instead. basically i am buying this converter to TEST if my current adapter is not working.
    http://www.kanex.com/c247dl
i am assuming that getting a KVM switch will be able to test this in the same manner but also give me the added option of /switching/ between my 2006 and the newer 2012 model.
i am having a bit of a hard time navigating the IO gear website and my terminology searching may not be optimal either. can anyone help me with this please? presumably i need a "mini DP and DVI KVM switch"?
    THANKS

OK. so for an extra hundred dollars (compared to buying a converter) i can get this 5770 video card that has two mini DP ports and which will be compatible with my cinema display is that right? then i am guessing i can buy a mini DP KVM switch if i decide to keep the computer (assuming it solves the video problem). does that sound about right?
Apple-firmware 5770 1GB, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5. (discontinued)

  • Old printer, new (to me) computer

My HP Deskjet D4160 Printer doesn't seem to be recognized by my Apple iMac G5 Power PC (OSX 10.4.11). I can't find the installation disk for the printer, though it may still turn up. Is there a fix for me short of buying a new printer? Please be very specific with instructions. I am 71 and bright enough but easily snowed by computer terms. Don't worry about talking down to me, it can't happen in re computers, etc. tlady2

Try changing the automatic check for new mail from every one minute to every 5 minutes.
If there are a number of messages to download and/or the communication with the account's incoming mail server is not closed for whatever reason before the next automatic check for new mail, the Mail.app will request the password for the account instead of providing a proper error message indicating there was a problem communicating with the incoming mail server.

  • Best Airport Extreme Wireless Radio Mode with Old and New Macs and PC

I'm running Airport Utility 5.3.2 and am running / connecting to the Internet with a new Airport Extreme 802.11n Gigabit Ethernet (the new squared off one) with "Version 7.3.2".
In addition to my new MacBook Black (which has 802.11n, I have two other older Maxs that run 802.11b/g (and also a PC that has 802.11.b/g/n).
Currently, the Airport Extreme's "Wireless" "Radio Mode" is set to
    802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)
But, reviewing the Radio Mode menu, I see there are a number of choices that seem "faster" - 802.11n only (2.4 GHz), 802.11n (802.11a compatible) and 802.11n only (5 GHz).
Can I set the Radio Mode to any of these other settings and still have my older Macs (and the PC) connect to the internet using this Airport Extreme? Or, do I have to leave my Airport Extreme Radio Mode set to what appears to be a slower speed 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) setting to allow others to use this Airport Extreme Base Station?
FWIW, I do have an older Airport 802.11g version 5.7 still connected and set up and the older computers can / could connect through that. However, I was hoping to give that one to a friend for their use elesewhere and wanted to have only one Airport Extreme set up at my house.

    "you'll use N+B/G at 2.4 GHZ."
I guess you means that I should continue with my current setting on the Airport Extreme - which is "802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)" - if I want all my computers to access the web via the Extreme. Correct?
I'm too much of a novice to try a "bridge" mode setup.
However, your suggestion (I think) "It would be more reliable and faster speed if you could connect both routers to using ethernet" does give me hope.
My Verizon Fios modem is actually a router. Indeed, I have my TiVo box connected to the Fios modem/router.
If I connect BOTH of my Airport Base Stations to the Fios modem/router and then do the following:
    (1) set the newer "Extreme" Base Station to "802.11n only (5 GHz)" and
    (2) keep the older Base Station (running 802.11g) as is
then my (and others') newer computer(s) with 802.11n can connect at high speed via the Extreme and older computers can still connect using the older Base Station.
    Correct?

  • Applications with serial numbers from old to new mac

    Hello,
I just purchased a new Retina Display MBP as an upgrade to my old iMac.
I have over 200 Applications taking up the bulk of my drive, many of which have serial numbers that I no longer even know of due to loss of original boxes, or what have you.
I am trying to avoid copying all of my content over to the new MBP, I would much rather just move what I actually need to and try to keep it a little "cleaner". So my question is, with a Time Machine Backup of my iMac... Can I plug that into the MacBook Pro, launch Time Machine, and simply drag the last backup's Applications over? Will the ones with the serial numbers run?
Is there a better way to do it?
    Thanks!

Use Migration Assistant. You can customise to a certain extent what you transfer over, but it'd be easier to transfer all your stuff that way and then delete what you don't want.
