Old problem with compressor

Hi There,
I am using a somewhat older version of FCP (5.0.4)
A few years ago I remeber having some trouble with the compressor.
It could not find the file's or something like that.
Someone in this forum helped me to solve the problem.
If I remeber well something had to be changed in prefernces.
The forum does not contain this old questions anymore, I regret to say.
The problem now is that after editing in FCP and exporting to the Compressor it gives a warning
"error trying to open source media file"
After clicking the ok button nothing happens.
Does anyone have a clue?
Thanks in advance
Thijs

I thought it had something to do with misplacing the original files but alas

  • Problem with compressor 2.01

    Hallo everyone.
I've a great problem with compressor 2.01 and Final cut pro 5.04.
When I try to export a movie from final cut to compressor, all the two application crash.
All is regular when I export the movie with Quick time.
This happens to me for the first time I used Final cut.
The second problem is that when I try to reinstall compressor from the original CD, compressor is gray and not black.
I've used yet every possibilities also with Disk warrior applcation without succes
    Please help me. Thank you

You need to update to Compressor 2.3.1 for Leopard compatibility.
Use Software Update, under the Apple menu item at top left of your screen, or look here: http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/finalcutpro/download/

  • Are the problems with Compressor's encoding fixed yet?

Sorry for the slightly vague title but I only use compressor once a year basically, which is after the production of a Christmas show I produce. Last year I upgraded ot Final Cut Studio to do the DVD and got caught out. I encoded using what I thought was the best setting (2 pass variable bit rate) and got jittery encoding. After investigating on this very forum, I found lots of comments about known problems with Compressor's encoding in this setting and ended up re encoding using one pass which was "ok".
I'd rather do the best job I can so the basic question is, "is it fixed yet". Keeping in mind I understand about altering settings so that I can get the time I need onto one disc (110 minutes unfortunately!) What setting will offer me the best possible picture quality, regardless of encoding time, with compressor? Many, many thaks for any advice you regular user can offer!!
    Happy Christmas in advance, Gareth

  • Old problem with precision time counting and /usepmtimer solution.

    Hello, all!
There was a problem in Windows XP and 2003 Server with using QueryPerformanceCouner() function. Sometimes it can cause problem with precision time measurements on CPUs which support powersaving modes by changing clock frequency. The simplest solution for that was /usepmtimer key in boot.ini file which forces the system to use another timer.
I just want to know does this problem appear in Windoes 7? And how to solve it since there is no boot.ini file in Windows 7?
    Thanks a lot!
P.S. This is a page with detailed description of the problem:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/895980

    Hi ,
There is official documentation released on userpmtimer for windows 7 operating system.
Also the KB article only refere to the OS which have performance problem.
After reading the below article , i feel that this problem is taken care in windows 7 / windows 2008 ( though there is no formal written documentation )
    http://blogs.technet.com/perfguru/archive/2008/02/18/explanation-for-the-usepmtimer-switch-in-the-boot-ini.aspx
you can post in windows 7 dedicated forum, so that MVP / Microsoft Engineers and community members would suggest you with latest data if any.

If you have difficulties fixing problems with software that is acting up I would suggest that you do a clean install of your OS and the software. That is, after backing up your files, of course.

Adobe CS is probably what you are looking for. But I'd go erase & install before throwing the towel.

  • Pixelation Problem with Compressor

Not long ago a friend helped me create a showreel in Final Cut Pro, which I then compressed in Compressor for the web. I was able to get the file to a reasonable size and still look decent. I used an mpeg-4 profile, and also resized and cropped the video. The final video was about 20 megs. We just updated the video and although I'm using the same profile I used previously, now the video is appearing very pixelated. An example of how it looks in the preview window, as well as how the final exported video looks is here:
    homepage.mac.com/thegoblincleaver/.Public/screengrab.jpg
I have tried turning up the bitrate to insane proportions, fiddled with the pixel shape, etc. My friend is just exporting the master as DV PAL. I'm bringing that video into compressor and even when I change the settings I get a similar pixelated effect.
Here is the profile I'm using if it might help someone advise me:
    homepage.mac.com/thegoblincleaver/.Public/webreel.setting
The previous video that was successfully outputed from Compressor is here:
    www.brettbunting.com/showreel
Oddly, if I simply export this video from quicktime pro, I dont have this issue. However, Quicktime doesn't really give me all the options that I am using in compressor...
Sorry that was so long-winded, I am really just at a loss for how to continue. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Brett

Looks to me like we have the same problem.

  • Problem with Compressor

I am trying to submit a film for compressor.
Ive had two problems. Firstly although I selected my external hard drive as the source, it seems to be writing information to my internal hard drive.
So i abandoned that, i dont have anough internal memory to sore the any tens of gigs this projec takes.
Having abandoned the first try I now see Compressor saying "Unable to Submit to Queue -  Please restart your computeer or verufiy your Compression Installaions Is Correct"
Any help would be much appreciated.

Well, if you're talking about FPCX, there are a couple of choices that can make a difference.
In Preferences, Import>Organizing you have a choice of copying to Events folder or not. I don't because I want to have control over the process – when what and where copies are made. (If you import from a camera, however, it will automatically make copies…which is desirable). So we're really talking about whether to copy files already on your HD. (I don't use FCPX to import from the camera, but that's just me holding on to some legacy work flow.)
Under Transcode, you have the choice to create optimized (Pro Res) or Proxy (Pro Res Proxy). I prefer to leave those unchecked because I'm often going to use only a small fraction of what I import and I don't want to create a lot of big files that I'm later going to have to prune. After I figure out roughly what I need then I do any transcoding from the Events browser.
You also have these Organizing/Transcoding choices when you create a new event; when you do, a dialogue box pops up.
Something else to pay attention to is your render files…which may or may not be on your boot drive. They can accumulate rapidly butcan be managed either from within FCPX or in the finder.

  • Old problem with HD footage, Considering upgrade

    Hi all,
I've been here with this question since day one with my rig (2.5 years+).
I'm not able to edit HD footage properly, the editing process is super slow, I can't seem to preview the footage because it just lags.
The footage is from numerous cameras each movie, DSLR, GoPro, MTS, etc.
I work 90% of the time with only one stream of video.
My current setup is as follows:
    i7 2600k 3.4 (no OC), p8z68 v pro MOBO, 16gb ram (4x4GB G.Skill RipJaw X Edition Dual Channel CL7-8-7-24)
    GTX 560 Ti
500gb black caviar sata 3 for os
2*1tb black caviar sata 3 raid for Project & Media
2*1tb black caviar sata 3 raid for Scartch,Renders,Etc.
    2tb green caviar for backups.
    *using the onboard raid controller.
    My workflow is really tedious, I'm working with proxy files to overcome the slow editing problem;
    1. Getting the hd clips from the client
    2. encoding the files to low res avi/mpeg
    3. editing
    4. link media to HD footage (Manually - aprox 30-40 mins)
    5. check for any errors
    6. review the film - very slow because of the HD
    7. export
    So.. any movie, takes forever.
A lot of people tried to help with my current hardware, but I couldn't find one single solution to the problem.
So, I want your advice, should I upgrade my rig? because if I know for a fact, that upgrading it in a small budget will get the things smooth, It will be worth while in the short term.
If you recommend upgrading, what should I go for? what can I keep ?
    Thanks and Regards,
    Eliran.

    Biran, welcome to the forums
Because of your GoPro and DSLR media without any overclocking you really need much more CPU power.  At least a hex-core.  But the first thing you have to do is read Harm's encyclopedia on building an editing computer for Premiere Pro on our web site, especially his Tweakers Pages.  Look especially at this graphic to see why you need that CPU upgrade.
Notice that GoPro and DSLR QT are both extremely CPU intensive.  Initially you could just start out with a new motherboard, CPU and CPU cooler; and possibly reuse your RAM, GPU and disk drives.  We would have know more about your case and power supply.  The next (later) upgrade would be in the disk drive area.

  • The same old problem with temperatures (K8N Neo Platinum)

I have problems since bios v1.0 on my K8N Neo Platinum with temeparutes.
I have installed a Prometeia Mach II St colling unit
I Tested the v1.0 official bios, the temperature was allways -65º full ou idle, what it is impossivel.
In the moment i flashed the bios to v1.2b5, temperature changed to 49º, and I did not move in nothing. The same temperature appears in all bios since v1.2b5. Now I have the v1.4b2 bios
    Sorry the Bad English

Here are the instructions to reflash the BIOS for your K8 Neo. I am currently running ver.1.4 with little problems. My only snafu is the LED for my optical mouse stays lit even when system is off, however I have no RAID, Ethernet, onboard sound, or SATA drives. I have just a simple basic system, and I don't overclock. My board is the K8 Neo Platinum socket 754, with an AMD64 3000+. YOU MUST HAVE A FLOPPY DRIVE CONNECTED TO SYSTEM FOR THESE INSTRUCTIONS TO WORK!.
Flashing BIOS on K8 Neo per MSI. READ ALL instructions before starting.
1.Check your BIOS for flashing protection and disable it.
    2. Know your board model#. a. Open case and find model# on the board between the PCI slots, or b., boot system and at first DOS screen you will see 'W7030ver1.4122101'. This means you have a MSI model 7030 motherboard with BIOS version 1.4 issued on 12/21/01.
3.Download the Bios that matches your motherboard model and version#.(I believe the Neo Plat had two versions, 1.0 and 1.1). I have 1.0. It will be found between the PCI slots. Create a folder on C: drive labeled 'C:\TEST'
4.EXtract the BIOS file to C:\TEST folder.
5.Create a boot floppy. For XP, at Desktop double click My Computer, right click floppy drive, click Format to format the disk, then click 'Create MS-DOS Boot Disk'.
    6. Set boot order to floppy. Hit F11 to select boot device.
    7. Insert boot floppy and restart system.
    8. At A:\ prompt type in the following,
    C:\ (enter)
    cd\TEST(enter)
    awdfl833c(space)w7030nms.130
The w7030nms.130 is the BIOS file name you downloaded to C:\TEST. Keep in mind you're dealing with DOS file names, so you may need to open a DOS window in Windows, and search C drive for the TEST folder and write down the DOS file name of the BIOS file BEFORE you start the BIOS update.
    9. Reboot when prompted. It shouldn't take more than 10 seconds to update the BIOS.

  • Old problem with a new twist !

My Ipod mini is frozen on the do not disconnect screen (not flashing) I accidentally disconnected it without ejecting/stopping the device I have tried to reset it several times using the - toggle hold press menu/play - method and the 5 r’s method (except restore as itunes does not recoginse the ipod) with absolutely no joy. Its is not being recognised by itunes at all and when I connect the ipod to my pc (windows xp) a pop-up window says USB device not recognised due to a malfunction with device……please help!!

Leopard requires at least a Mac with an 867MHz or faster PowerPC G4 processor -- see the Minimum System Requirements section of Mac OS X v10.5.6 Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.) or just look on the retail box packaging.
According to your profile info, your Mac is an "iMac DV," apparently a 400 MHz PowerPC G3 model. Since that isn't even close to meeting the minimum system requirements for Leopard, & the installer disc itself runs a version of Leopard as well as installing it, it is no surprise that you get a kernel panic when trying to startup from the disc.
IOW, your G3 Mac cannot run any version of OS X beyond Tiger.

  • Quality Issues with Compressor 2.0.1

Has anyone had any contact with Apple engineers about the problems folks are having with macro-blocking artifacts with Compressor since 2.x appeared?
Is Apple aware of this serious step-back in reliability and quality?
We too are experiencing this and it is very troublesome. Really takes the fun out of doing this type of work.
I would like hear from those who have never had the problem or who had the problem and resolved without reverting to older versions.
I think the one common factor among those experiencing the problem is that we are all working in DV25 (NTSC or PAL).
    Comments?
    thanks,
    MACK

Jamie, here is a link to a more detailed discussion on the problem with Compressor's (v2) 2-pass MPEG2 VBR encodings.
    Waymen, "MPEG-2 conversion issues" #8, 06:15pm Sep 13, 2005 CDT
The problem is somewhat random and can be hard to reproduce or detect. However, since it usually (always?) occurs in sequences that contain at least some difficult to compress material it's possible that very clean video sources will suffer less from this defect (since they won't be "wasting" bits to encode noise or image shortcomings that were already present in the original source).
Some users have complained about poor fades to black, but probably the worst example I've seen was a slow cross-fade between two clips that both contained a fair amount of motion. In the latter case, Compressor 1.2.1 handled the transition much better even when using the same bit rate and quality settings. However, when Compressor 2 fails the image degenerates into some fairly large, very low detail compression blocks for maybe one or two frames. Then it recovers, everything will look fine until you see another random occurrence of the problem. You may only see two bad frames out of several hundred, but when you see it you know immediately that something is wrong.
I doubt that this is a configuration problem or something that is hardware specific since I've been able to duplicate the exact same failure on two systems that had absolutely nothing in common as far as installation or software setup. The only commonality was the source video clip (which looks fine) and Compressor 2. However, this same clip looks fine when encoded with Compressor 1.2.1.
Note, also, that I'm using only Compressor 2 presets on Compressor 2, this is not the problem caused by using "old" presets imported from Compressor 1.X.
Anyway, I've already sent Apple a bug report, so there is little that I can do at this point other than to hope for a fix from Apple. That and restricting myself to one-pass encodings (as discussed in my earlier post).

  • Upgrade from 10.4.11 to 10.5.6 - problem with installer

This is doubtless an old problem with maybe with a new twist. I am upgrading from OSX 10.4.11 to OSX 10.5.6. I crossed my fingers hoping all would go well but can't even get the machine to restart and to mount the Installer on the desktop. Hence, evolving from a Tiger to Leopard hasn't been a success.
No matter what I try the machine goes to a grey OS screen with gobblygook on screen and stops. Investigation leads me to understand the gobblygook is a kernel panic, also featuring a Multilanguage screen. I have tried the normal restart procedure with the installer, holding C key down with restart and setting up the CD as the install disk for the restart, all to no avail.
When I eject the install DVD I can recommence using my machine without any apparent ill-effect.
An action plan and suggestions would be welcome.
