Old Reliable G4 mirror suddenly won't power up....YIKES!!

my trusty, G4 MDD, almost 4 years old now, never had problems, all of sudden will not power on at all when the power button is switched on....I tried resetting the button on the motherboard next to the battery (PMU?) and still nothing...
from my research, it sounds like a power supply, but is there any thing I can do at this point to at least try to get this thing powered up?
I'm not really anywhere near a mac tech, but I do have other issues
a) in case it is a power supply and it needs to be replaced, will it affect the files on my boot drive?
b) I do have a spare 733 Quicksilver...I had been running a separate audio drive that I'm sure I can probably install on the Quicksilver to at least retrieve my audio files, but if I remove the boot drive on the 1.25 mirror door, can that simply be installed on the Quicksilver also to retrieve some other very important stuff...
HELP!

so regardless of whether it's the boot drive or the supplemental drive, it doesn't matter?
Correct. Either one can be installed in an enclosure and will be seen as an external.
now, if I install the old boot drive from the MDD into a firewire enclosure, can I plug that drive into my spare Quicksilver and boot from that? if so, how do I do that? (provided the drive isn't messed up)
Go ahead and try it. Connect the external device to to the QS and check System Preferences. If it is bootable, System Preferences / Startup Disk will list it. At that point you can select it as your startup drive and restart.
By the way, I suspect you already know this, the power supplies of the QS and the MDD are not interchangeable.

  • HT3964 My iMac is approx 3 years old. It suddenly won't power up. It was plugged in through a power surge preventer but there seems now to be no life at all. The fuse in the plug is fine.

iMac that won't power on, any advice please?

If there are no sounds or video at all it seems the power supply is dead. Take the machine in for service at your local Apple Store or AASP. Then when it's repaired connect the machine to  a uninterruptible power supply, you can purchase a good quality one for less than $100 at your local office supply store.

  • La Cie Mini external HD suddenly won't power up

I've had a La Cie Mini HD connected to my iMac G5 for over a year, and I just noticed today that it won't power up at all. I've always used the built-in USB port, and the only other device I've ever connected that way is my iSight camera. (I noticed the La Cie went a little wonky whenever the camera was connected, so I got in the habit of shutting off the La Cie whenever I did a video chat.) I've just tested the iSight on both built-in USB ports and the camera works fine, so it doesn't seem to be a problem with the USB port. I thought it might be related to recent software updates (I did the 10.5.8 update and whatever else has come along in the past week), so I repaired disk permissions, but the HD still won't power up. Would appreciate any advice!

    Hello katydid1969
    (1) Can you take another look at your system and perhaps correct your problem statement?
    (2) *Only built-in iSights are connected via USB*, but built-in iSights cannot be "connected" and disconnected.  If your camera is an external iSight, it connects via Firewire rather than USB.
If you are having problems with Firewire iSight when connected at the same time as your Firewire LaCie drives, yours is a common problem that has existed as long as iSight. I believe that the problem relates to the differences in data stream timing between multiple connected Firewire devices.
Although adding additional Firewire cards to tower Macs (iMacs do not have this expansion capability) is reported to work for some users, the *only certain work-around that I have ever found is to disconnect other Firewire devices when using your iSight and turn off or disconnect your iSight when using other Firewire devices*.
For more info, see this linked page regarding Possible Hardware or Software Conflicts with iSight or iChat.
If your LaCie drive is connected via USB, it does NOT likely conflict with your external iSight (or vice-versa.) In that case, you will need to troubleshoot the drive, cables, ports or other USB possibilities.
    (3) If your problem does NOT relate to Firewire devices, we will try to offer other suggestions in response to the details in your reply.

  • TS1365 MacBook Pro 2012 suddenly won't power up

My mid 2012 MacBook Pro just developed a strange power problem, won't power up at all. None of TS1365 above helps. The magsafe adaptor works fine on another Macbook. On the new MBP the green light slowly dims, and there are no lights showing at all for the battery when its button is depressed. Is this an Apple Store visit required?

Nothing has ever been overclocked on this system.
Everything is plugged into a Belkin Surgemaster powerbar.
I haven't mentioned the power supply. I'll get to that. I have been using an ANTEC NEOPOWER 480W POWER SUPPLY (ATX12V  DUAL 12V RAILS ACTIVE PFC W/ DETACHABLE OUTPUT CABLES) for about a year on this system without
any issues. One morning, I wake up, hit the power button on my coolermaster case, and nothing happens.
CPU fan won't even spin. Nothing happens.
    O.k., blown power supply, I think . . . .
So I take out my Antec and put it in another system. That system turns on
    without any problems.
    Hmm . . .
I come here, and I read posts about
potential compatibility issues with Antec power supplies. But if it's a compatibility
issue why was my system working for about a year?
    O.k., fine. I'll buy a Enermax 535W EG565P-VE FMA 24P (115/230 VAC) power supply.
I just plug it into the mainboard (nothing else). Hit the power button . . .
The CPU fan spins for half a second, and then nothing.
Did my motherboard just suddenly die for no reason?
    Any suggestions?

Pull the AC plug from PSU and set cmos in clear position with battery removed for atlest 20 minutes perhaps longer .
Then try to post the system barebone .
Just cpu,1 pcs memory in slot 1 , gfx card , and keyboard in PS2.
No usb devices at all including card reader and no pci cards harddisks or cdoms/dvd/floppy.
It could also be caused by a short or a malfunctioning fan connected to mobo.
Try to disconnect all case fans from mobo headers if you have any connected to additional fan holders.
The chipset fan can also be disconnected momentarily just to see if it posts.
If none of this helps , replace cmos battery and try again .

  • Dead iMac G3 suddenly won't power on. PRAM battery or Power Supply?

iMac G3 350 slot load USB only running 10.4.11
    i love this little guy.
it's been running almost non stop for a few years as a file server... only restarted maybe a dozen times during that period. i can't remember ever shutting it down.
i had to move it recently. might have been unplugged from a wall socket for a minute or so. plugged it back in but left it powered off for a few days.
went to turn it on recently and nothing. not a chime, not a light, not a click or hard drive spin-up. zero. pushed the PMU reset button once. still nothing. i've taken the PRAM battery out for now.
my question is this: is it possible the power supply is dead and a PRAM battery will not fix the iMac? is there any way to tell before spending money on a new battery i may not need?
    thanks!

    Hello Nicholas,
I recently retired my hard working 350 slot so I know how great the computer can be.
Unplugging for a moment should not have affected the battery.
I would respectfully suggest you start with the simple things such as:
    1. - Make certain the power source is not on a switch and that it is good
    2. - Be certain the power chord is fully seated in the back of the computer and wall socket.
    3. - If trying to start from the keyboard button, try using the button on the face of the computer
perhaps the keyboard is not fully plugged into the usb port.
I always like to start with the simple things when I have a problem.
Now that the battery is removed it could cause a bit of a problem. I think I would install the battery
and check the above mentioned ideas. If still no power, then I would replace the battery.
It doesn;t seem logical that the power supply would just go as a result of the board.
I would try to get the computer up and running.
One last tip.......when my slot load was starting to go it acted odd. I would let the computer sit for a day or two and it would then start. It was irratic at best but the old computer allowed me a few last
boots so that I could back up to my external.
It is a great computer and sounds like it served you well it deserves a few chances.
I hope you replace the battery, plug and it re-starts. Keep it plugged in once the battery is replaced/returned .....Best of Luck Jim

  • MacBook Pro (late 2011) suddenly won't power up

Was working with my MacBook Pro this evening, initially on battery power. Switched to AC when the battery was at 60%. An hour later it was nearly fully charged and I closed the laptop (without shutting down) and took it with me to a restaurant. Got back to work, opened the MBP up and...no power. MagSafe light flickers faintly; no battery indicators light when I hit the battery strength button. Tried an SMC reset and a PRAM reset to no avail. All this while I'm in a foreign country doing a project with a tight deadline.
I'm going to attempt to see an Apple reseller in the morning, but does anyone have further troubleshooting or diagnostic suggestions? Thanks.

The Mac Pro logic board includes a set of LEDs to help troubleshoot the
computer. The LEDs are located toward the rear of the logic board, under the memory cage, next
to PCI card slot 1. You can view these LEDs by removing the computer’s side access panel and
looking through the memory cage to the logic board below. LEDs 2, 3, 4, and 5 are normally off
and will automatically illuminate if an error occurs. To read LEDs 1, 6, 7, and 8, you must press the
DIAG_LED button, which is adjacent to the LEDs. To press the DIAG_LED button, use the nylon
    probe tool.

  • G4 1.2 Mirror Drive won't Power Up

Well Guessing that the trouble could be a power supply, or a front power switch.
Did the usuals, (by the way, worked fine up to now), changed battery, power cord, reset pmu, is it illogical for this puppy to need a new switch??
Or just a power supply? And how do I determine this by myself?
    Thank you,
    Bryan

Did you try pressing the power button HARD? I find the MDD power button needs to be pushed hard. You should feel it click on your finger tips. When I got my system, I thought I had a power issue as well. Then I pressed it with a pen, felt it click, and it started. It's a start (pardon the pun).

  • Pavilion dv6 laptop - won't power up, and other weirdness

This laptop (model dv6-3143us) was working fine... and now suddenly won't power on. However, with the (fully charged) battery inserted, the LCD screen is on - blank, but very definitely on, even though the rest of the computer is not.
I removed the battery, tried a hard reset, swapped the AC adapter with a known good one. The tiny LED next to the power input jack does not come on. Pressing the power button - nothing happens. The AC adapter's LED is lit, and it will power another identical laptop.
The LCD coming on part is what really confuses me. Maybe a short somewhere? Ideas appreciated!

    Jon-o-groats,
Sorry to hear that, if you decide to go ahead and get the computer repaired, here is the service and maintenance guide for your computer. On page 91 it shows you a list of the motherboards that should work for this particular computer, next to each board there is a part number that will allow you to search for online for comparisons and prices.
Please respond back at your earliest convenience.

I am having MacBook Pro 3 yrs old and today while I was watching some movie on it suddenly it got power off and when I am trying to start it, it's power button is not working even the round button on external left side is not showing battery lights. But when I connect it to chrger then Charger only gives green light and even the external round button only shown 4 green lights (if charger connected). I don't know what to do now

Sounds like you need a #1SMC Reset
    1. SMC reset
    >>Instructions to reset SMC
Disconnect other non-Apple and external hardware except (if applicable) a mouse and keyboard until your finished repairing your machine.
Problems solved: Fans blowing with no activity, machine is not booting, power button pressed and nothing happens, problems with indicators, Magsafe has wrong lights, battery is not charging, monitor and graphics issues etc.  If the battery is not charged (from like letting it sleep too long), let the Mac charge up awhile afterwards.
Will not hurt the machine resetting if it's not broken.
    Other related hardware problems (optional):
Check battery status: Hold option/alt key down while clicking on the battery icon in the menu bar, top right corner.
Magsafe: Use the correct/matching power supply charger with your Mac, not a less powered one from another Mac.

  • My old macbook won't power up - help please!

I have an ancient macbook, from around 2006, and it's been chugging along just fine.  Suddenly, it just won't power up at all!  Power adaptor shows a green light at plug in, so the cord is working, but no fan sounds, no lights, nothing when I try starting.  I've tried that SMC reset, but still nothing.
Is there anything else I can try?  If not, does anyone know if a good apple repair shop should be able to recover my data?  I've been an idiot and haven't done a back up in a few years.
Thanks for any help anyone can provide!  I'm going to purchase a new macbook air, but REALLY need my data from the old one if at all possible, so hoping I can get it started and/or have a repair person salvage the data.

You don't have a Macbook if you are running OS 9 and it's 10 years old. The first Macbook is an Intel Mac that came out in 2006 running 10.4.x. You most likely have a Powerbook. Try posting in the Powerbook forum.
