Old SCSI film scanner vs modern flatbed scanner?

I have just "inherited" a Nikon LS-10E dedicated film scanner (SCSI, +/- 10 years old).
Is this worth even fussing with if I have a modern flatbed scanner (4800x9600) with modern software?
I intend to use digitize color slides.
Thanks for your time!

SCSI - what's .... - just kidding. Go here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCSI and you can see the various specs for SCSI and the bandwidth. Since USB 2.0 and FW400/800 appear to be faster then I would donate, toss, doorstop, the old scanner.
With the USB and FW the interface is easier - no device id's etc.

  • Anyone aware of method to connect scsi film scanner to iMac (intel)

I have a Nikon LS-4500 medium format scanner which is now attached to a PC running XP which I would like to use with my iMac rather than maintaining two computers. Any ideas?  Is a USB to SCSI connection possible?

in the google search you could also try replacing the usb part by firewire
mind you it may not be compatible
and if would require drivers for both the converter and a twain driver for the scanner
so make sure there are osx drivers for all parts before spending too much
though if it was me I would likely just flush the scanner out the toilet and buy a new one

  • How do I install Canoscan film scanner on macbook using external disc drive?

How do I install a CanoScan film scanner using external disc drive ?

sorry, not being very clear. I have the scanner and am trying to instal the operating  programme onto my new macbook. It was fine on my 6 year old one! I put the setup disc in the external drive. I can now get it to load 80% but it then stops. I have then tried to eject the disc - it won't let me as it says it is still setting up - but after 2 hours still says the same and clearly is doing nothing. I can't quit the setup programme - the only way I finally managed to quit was to to force quit the computer to shutdown and then when I start up again I can eject the disc.
Any idea how I make it load the 20% of the setup that it is currently refusing to do?

  • NIKON SF-210 slide/film Scanner

I know that this is not the section for discussions of scanners, but I have found no suitable place to find answers to my questions. Perhaps someone might make a useful suggestion??
I have had a NIKON SF-210 slide/film scanner now for a couple or three years. However, I only started using it heavily last Fall (2008) to scan my large archive of old family slides. Unfortunately, as time has passed, the software has become more and more unstable causing me to have to restart the whole process after scanning only a small number of slides. Sometimes, it will not scan even one slide before crashing. I read somewhere that this behavior may be due to the upgrades in Mac software. I've done, repeatedly, all of the usual things that I can think of like reloading the software, etc.
I can't get a response concerning this problem from anyone at NIKON and they don't have any Mac version upgrades to the scanner software on their web sites, and haven't for some time, perhaps a couple or three years. Does NIKON still support Mac products??
Can anyone tell me how to solve or to find the solution to this problem?
    Thanks, Gramp

I am using the Nikon Coolscan V (LS-50ED) USB connection with:
    intel MBP 15" (2.8Ghz)
    OSX 10.6.2. (Snow Leopard)
I am just using the standard (on disc) Nikon Software upgraded to version 4.0.2 via internet. The app says it is a *Application (PowerPC)* under the info section, so I assume that it is running on Rosetta. (the Genious did my upgrade to 10.6 so I don't know if he installed Rosetta or not, but I assume so.)
Everything seems to be working fine (as this is my first experience with scanning slides and color correction). Was a synch to set up. I am not the Ace though. I have only been using the slide scanner and not the film scanner yet (though I am soon to try).
FYI there is a flickr group of nikon scanner users. I found some of them helpful too.

  • Unable to install a software driver for Canon film scanner on mac OSX 10.6

I am unable to install a software driver for a Canon film scanner FS4000US. I have downloaded it from Canon then open the package click the install and it asks for a location namely the Applications folder. Then it says it has been installed re -start etc, but still no driver.
I am using Mac OS 10.6. Any suggestions greatly received. I have repaired/disk and permissions and it still does not work.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select "/var/log/install.log" from the file list. Post the messages from the last installation attempt, starting from the time when you launched the Installer or Software Update.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.

  • Film scanner Nikon Coolscan V ED

I have the film scanner Nikon Coolscan V ED and want to know if anyone here use this ?
I try to find help for a problem but Nikon website doesn't speaks about film scanners (just cameras) and I tried Yahoo/Google search for some other sites/community board/discussions without success. I figure that people here might have a film scanner. Or can anyone direct me to a site that might help ?
    Thank you.
Just in case someone here has this scanner I will post my problem too.
For some reason I did not install the reference manual and now that I want to install it, I can't because I have a problem with my computer (the DVD tray doesn't open).
Anyway, I need to find ASAP a solution to this problem:
When I scan a slide, the quality is good just like the slide. Then I save it to a folder, close the file and then go to the folder to reopen it (to check) and the image is grainy ! I tried numerous variations (file size, number of pixels per inch, etc.) but they all come grainy.
I'm sure (well, I guess) the explanation is in the reference manual on CD but as I said, I can't access this now. The print manual, which I have of course, do not mention this.
    Please help.
Just in case there's a relation:
My monitor is, for years, on 800x600 because the recommended resolution makes the text too small. However I have literally downloaded thousands of JPEG pictures from the Web and the quality is excellent. So shouldn't my pictures be the same ?

I have a Polaroid SprintScan 35+ slide & film scanner & have scanned hundreds of slides. I scan at a resolution of 300ppi. What resolution are you using?
Afetr I scan I crop the image & color adjust, if necessary, & reduce the resolution to 72ppi (or 100ppi). I have my screen resolution set to 1280 x 960.

  • Nikon LS3510-AF Film Scanner

I don't know what happened to my previous post on the subject. Only half of the text appears to have been published. No wonder I received no replies!
As I mentioned previously, I have a Nikon LS3510-AF film scanner (circa 1994) that I have been trying to get to work using a Mac Plus. I eventually gave up, and bought a fully functional Performa 6200 running OS 7.6.1, which should work with the scanner. Nikon no longer supports the LS3510-AF, but I found out that the scanner will work if I use Adobe Photoshop version 4 or 5 (which I have). I just need to obtain the Photoshop plug-ins for the scanner, but I cannot locate them anywhere here in the UK.
Please—anybody. This is becoming a real issue for me, that would be eased just by seeing the scanner work, just once even!
I would be grateful for any feedback.
    Many thanks,
    Steve

    Steve,
I do not want to rain on your parade but you might have bigger problems than software.  We aquired a Nikon LS-1000 Cool Scan in 1999.  Tried it out and had a lot of spots on the image.  I checked my slides for mildew or dust.  Fortunately, the originals were still in good shape.
Checked with the Nikon dealer in town.  Turns out that they did not build ultrasonic vibration cleaning into the earlier model scanners.  So, the imaging units suffered from 'static cling.'  Nikon had a proceedure for cleaning but it was not simple.
I can check to see what plug-in software came with the 1000.

Same question answered here : https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5762314?tstart=0
I just popped in with using Mavericks (I got rid of my MBP about a year ago, and just got another one when I got an Air for my wife) and noticed that Mavericks is not working and playing well with a couple of programs I already owned (Paraellels, for example...yes, I spelled it wrong...).  I looked for maginon.com and it didn't exist, nor was my google search directed to another location for them, so I postulate that the device may not be in production anymore, thus: no driver updates from the manufacturer.
From my mac-noob-layman's perspective: get some vmware, run windows and use the scanner in your virt machine to capture your images.  Put the images in your mac side and work your mac magic on them there.
    Peace

  • How can I re-install my old SCSI card (2906)?

I think I should have asked for guidance here first but...
I'm trying to re-install my old SCSI card in my G4 (Dual 1 GHz - 1.5 GB Ram, 10.5.8), it worked fine a few years ago (under previous OS) but I can't seem to get it running now. The Profiler sees the card (Adaptec 2906) but says there is no driver. So I downloaded a driver from the Adaptec site (2930 - they say its the same as the 2906 driver), installed it, connected an old ZIP drive as a test - and yes I set the auto termination. Restarted and got a Kernel panic! - retried and got another panic!
Un-installed the driver, cleaned the cashes and reset permissions with Onyx, so I appear to be back to a stable system.
Anyone have any experience with SCSI cards? I would greatly appreciate any/all suggestions. I do have some experience with computers [Apple II+, SE30, IIFX, 8500 PowerMac, but this old head just can't get this figured out.
    Thanks in advance!

I thought I'd post this as an update and general information for others who might have a similar problem.
I have my old original Scsi card installed (Adaptec 2906), and it does work under 10.4.11 (my alternate/back-up system). I installed just "Adaptec78XXSCSI.kext" in the system/library/extensions folder and as long as I start my scanner before I boot into 10.4 everything seems to work just fine.
It's a bit of a pain to have to switch systems whenever I need to scan something, but I can live with it.
I tried to install the drivers in 10.5.8 but that doesn't work at all. If I install the whole Adaptec2930 package, I get a Kernel panic almost immediately. If I install just the "Adaptec78XXSCSI.kext", the card is not recognized. From what I've read on various sites is that 10.4 is the last OS that supports SCSI cards (or at least this Adaptec card). If someone has better/more information, I would appreciate hearing from them.
I contacted Adaptec tech support, but I have not as yet received a reply
In the end, things have worked out reasonably well. I have the use of my old reliable Agfa Scanner (Vuescan is great!), and my old Powermac 8500 is still functional enough for me to recover all my ancient tape archives.
An interesting little twist: Part of my incentive to re-install the old SCSI card was to recover my tape archives via Retrospect. But I discovered while searching for the drivers that Retrospect no longer supports the Adaptec cards, and hasn't for some time, so I could not have used it on my G4 anyway!
Now I'm saving my pennies for a new 27" iMac

  • Old SCSI card, will it function in Mac Pro?

In my old G4 there is an old SCSI card that used for my old scanner connection under Classic with the G4. Before I drag out that G4, remove the card and install it in my Mac Pro, will someone offer an opinion if the card will function in the Mac Pro?

No. Mac Pros require PCI-E cards. The one you have won't fit. Even if it did it probably would not work.

  • Convert old 8mm film to what 'format' to edit in iMovie?

I have selected a service to convert and save my families old 8mm film to a hard drive (which I will be supplying). I would like to import the movies (files) from the HD into iMovie for editing and eventual burn to DVD. What format should the service save the files in? Quicktime .mov? or something else? The service lists: Raw DV or AVI Type 1 or Type 2 or Type 2c or Matrox AVI or Avid DV OMF.
    Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   <<br>
    Powerbook G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi Tyler!
Of the options you list I would choose 'Raw DV'. iMovie is designed to handle a DV stream @ 13GB per hour, for editing and transfer to iDVD.
But ask the vendor to confirm that his 'Raw DV' is designed for transfer to iMovie 6 on an Apple Mac, and before he loads up the hard drive you are supplying make sure that it has been formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

  • Old 8MM film conversion

This year I would like to convert all my old 8MM film to DVD format for importing to iMovie for editing.
Question: Can the Intel iMacs import from DVDs?
Can anyone provide me with instructions to import from DVDs?
I've tried importing a movie burned in iDVD back into iMovie, but it's just not obvious to me as to how to do it.
    Thanks

    Hi rjr535
You will have to convert the DVD's image and audio to MPEG-4 (mp4) befor you can import it to iMovie!
I use a DVD recorder to burn my old camcorder tapes to DVD's, then pop the DVD's in the iMac and use HandBrake to convert them to MPEG-4 befor importing to iMovie!
Here is the link for [HandBrake|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/21117]
