Old Smart cover on iPad Air...?

I have a lovingly kept 2011 black leather smart cover on my iPad 2. Will this work with a new iPad Air, or must I buy a new cover?
Cheers

The older Smart Cover is not compatible with the iPad Air. The Air is quite a bit smaller so the cover would overhang. Also, the magnets that hold the cover to the device will likely not line up either nor will the embeded magnets in the cover that trigger the sleep/wake function when the cover is opened/closed.
Just splurge for new Smart Cover for the Air. It's worth it.

  • Smart Cover for iPad Air does not stay closed

The iPad Air Smart Cover is a different design to the previous versions of the Smart Cover, it has no metal spine on the left side and the magnets do not appear to be as strong as the previous versions. Presumably Apple has done this to reduce the production cost, and increase profits.
The result of this is that if one holds the iPad with the spine of the cover in the left had and the thumb on the first section of the cover and then tips the iPad over to the left the cover opens when the iPad is tipped past the vertical, towards the left side. This is made worse  when the iPad is fitted with a third party back protector case which fits over the front edge slightly.
This problem did not exist with the earlier iPads and their Smart Covers. We have an iPad 2 and iPad 3 both fitted out with Smart Covers and third party back covers. Both of these can be tipped over completely, upside-down, while holding them (in the manner described above) and they do not open.
We tried our new iPad Air Smart cover on other iPad Airs at the store (not Apple) and we also tried other Smart Covers on our iPad Air. They all had the same problem.
The only fix will be if Apple recognise the problem and improve the design of the Smart Cover
NOTE: We also tried the Smart Case and this had the same problem.
So, my questin is to Apple: When will I be able to exchange the Smart Cover for an updated version that does not have this problem?

I also have an iPad Air, and a genuine Apple Air Smart Cover. Cover stuck fine in the closed position (even if upside down) for several months. Cover also stuck to the right hand back of the iPad Air when open and folded back, even if upside down.
About a week ago, the right hand edge of the cover started being slightly repelled from the right hand edge iPad Air when closed. This left the iPad at risk of not actuating the on off switch, or at least being very sensitive to any movement.
The cover still stuck to the back of the iPad Air when open and folded back.
I believe Apple have magnets in the right hand edge of the cover, not just a passive strip of iron. If so, the polarity between back and front of the cover will be opposite. I believe Apple are somehow arranging the magnets in the right hand side of the iPad Air to change position depending on whether the cover is closed on the front, or open and folded to the back. I suspect Apple somehow allow the magnets in the iPad Air to pivot or move to provide a decent attraction both front and back regardless of cover polarity.
When I get hold of some magnetic viewing film I will check the magnet locations further.
My iPad Air went back to attracting the cover to both front and back a day or so ago. I had made no alterations. This correction happened after leaving the cover closed (and hovering mid air by a milimetre or two) overnight.
I believe the problem is in the iPad Air, not in the Smart Cover.

No I don't have another computer. I was thinking initially I would put them on my ipad but since I don't have enough gb maybe I can store them in some cloud thing? Sorry am a bit of a Luddite when it comes to all this. I just need to have them stored someplace and accessible to play when I need to. Thanks for your help.

  • Will the old smart cover; product code MC947LL/A, work on the iPad 4th Generation?

Will the automatic turn off/on work?

According to the Apple Store online, it should.

  • Will iPad Smart Cover stain iPad?

    Hi all,
Sorry if this is a stupid, OCD-related question... but I just bought white iPad with Retina and red leather smart cover to go along with it.
I'm thinking about whether or not returning the case, because I read a message somewhere that the interior of the red case can stain the white lining around the edges of the ipad.
Is this something I need to worry about? Or am I just being paranoid?

If you are thinking about putting a screen protector on it, I know a simple trick how to avoid dust under the protector. Go to a room with closed windows, close the door, sit down with the iPad at a table and wait for around 3-5 Minutes without moving too much (while watching tv for example). Most of the dust should be on the floor, and not in the air anymore. Now you can clean the screen of the iPad and put the protector on the screen. Don't worry about trying two or three times, without the dust, you can try much often to get a perfect result. I already put 4 screen protectors on tablets and more than 15 on phones and iPods :-)
The glass shouldn't get stain, it is too slick for the material to stick on the glass.

  • Smart Cover and iPad 3

I have my new iPad and I went to the Apple Store to get a couple accessorys and I was facinated by the Smart Cover. So I bought it got home and it worked fine. The Sales person it would fit just as on an iPad 2. So I never owning an iPad 2 thought would work fine. But I noticed an issue. when folded to the back of the device it doesnt stay attached well and becomes uncomfortable to hold. Is this normal or something due to the new iPad?

ya it doesnt, the smarcover is good for folding the smartcover for 3 orientations (landscape in "movie mode" and "type mode", portrait), it is not designed to lay flat at the back, so if you add pressure the smartcover will come off.
This is mainly because the magnets where it hatch into is at the back.

  • Apple iPad 2 Smart Cover For iPad 1

    Helo folks
Since no difference between first and sec gen. Of pad's screen , length and width sizes, i want to get a ipad 2 smart cover for my original ipad 1 , possible ? .. It should
    ?

The display size and resolution are the same, the iPads themselves are not exactly the same dimension. Also, the new iPad has magnets inside of it help the smart cover attach itself to the new model.
You would be wasting your money, the Smart Cover is for the iPad 2 only.

  • Can Smart cover Damages ipad mini's SPEAKERS ?

    HI am from India,
I was using a Smart cover since 7 Months. It was iOS 6 when i started using it Now i Updated my iPad mini to iOS 7 and i experienced the Distortion in Left Speaker everytime whenever i use to restart my Device & Destortion was use to clear automatically when i restarted device again. So i was just curious about this. So i just want to know is there any relation between Smart cover's Magnet and the speakers ?
Note :I dont know the Smart cover is Original Or Duplicate.I restored iOS 7 from service center and now theres not problem YET. So now i was just thinking wether i use smart cover Or not ?

An easy way to tell if the cover is affecting your speakers is to remove it and use the device as you normally do. If the cover is/was indeed affecting your device's speakers, then you'll get no distortion and continue to get no distortion. Then go back and use the device with the cover again to see if you again get the distortion. Do this "with cover"/"without cover" a few times to verify. This is also known as "the process of elimination".
If the cover is causing the issue (not likely in my opinion), your ultimate solution is to get a new cover.

  • Smart cover new ipad

Does anyone have trouble with Apple smart covers being a little loose when folded over the back of the new iPad?  My smart cover fits perfectly on my iPad 2, clinging tightly to it when closed over the front and closed over the back.  When attaching it to my "new iPad", however, it clings tightly to the front of the new iPad but not the back.  The net effect is that if I fold the smart cover over the back of the new iPad, and hold the iPad with my left hand, the smart cover will dangle open in response to the slightest of motions.  This dissatisfies me greatly.

My smart cover never did stick to the back on my 2 or 3. I don't believe it was meant to. When I am holding it I just take it off and reattach it as needed. I think the reason it doesn't work on the 3 as well as it did on the 2 in your case is the magnets are near the surface of the iPad and the New iPad is slightly thicker therefore putting more distance between the magnets. This would make them weaker. I don't think it is a design flaw because I don't think they were ever meant to stick to the back in the first place.

  • Why only leather Smart Cases for iPad Air 2?

Why do Apple only sell the more expensive leather Smart Cases than the cheaper plastic Smart Cases? The price for leather case can be a little to expensive. Do anyone know why they only sell the leather ones? And is the leather case worth to buy even with the high price?

I was also surprised by this. I'm not a fan of leather but I orderd the new Smart Case. I love having the Smart Cover and definitely needed something on the back to make my iPad less likely to slither off smooth surfaces.
I love the new Smart Case. The fit and finish is superb and it provides some nice edge and corner protection. Great Midnight Blue color also. It's well worth the money for me.

  • Leather Smart Cover for iPad Mini?

I hope Apple creates a leather version of the Smart Cover for the iPad MIni.
The polyurethane version - while effective - feels rather cheap and flimsy.
Surely, it would be quite easy for Apple to design a leather version.
Perhaps they are waiting to release it with the Retina version of the iPad mini.
    Fingers crossed.

Apple has not announced such a cover that I've seen, and until they do, none of us will know more than you do. You can express your desire for such a cover here, if you wish:

  • Behaviour of Smart Cover on iPad Under iOS 7

Since upgrade to iOS 7 I can't seem to get the Smart Cover to work as I would expect.  Assume that I have enabled the "lock / unlock" in settings. Pass code lock is off, and auto lock is set to 2 minutes.  Any suggestions welcome.

    Thanks.  And worth a try.
Strangely, I have a Logitech thin keyboard / cover that *does* work. And (worryingly) I can make the device sleep with the Smart Cover by taking it off the iPad, and waving the magnet at the top right of the iPad screen. This is a current generation of the iPad, but an earlier generation of the Smart Cover. Could it be that there has been a design change that makes the earlier cover work less reliably?  Or might the strength of the magnet in the Logitech cover have "done something" to the sensor to make it less easily activated?
All part of life's rich tapestry.

  • ICase Smart Cover For iPad What Do you Think?

    Just come across this iCase
http://www.icasecovers.com/ and wondering if any of you have used it?
    Cheers

Restart - hold the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut down. To power up - hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset - Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears - ignore the red slider.
Restore - Hold off on that one for now
You can try this as well - close open apps from the task bar. Double tap the home button and the task bar appears with all of your recent apps. Tap and hold down on one of the icons until they all wiggle. Then tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the icon to close the app. Close all of the apps in the task bar. Then restart your iPad as described above.

  • My iPad air does not have an lock on/off toggle for the smart cover ipad cases.

Last week I received my new at&t 64gb iPad air. (This is my 3rd iPad. 2nd that, I assume, can use a smart cover style ipad case.) Although I have not purchased a new cover for it yet. I could not help but notice that in the Settings/general there is no "Lock" on/off toggle for the magnetic cover as ther is on my iPad3. does  anyone know if there is supposed to be one on the ipad air or did apple do away with the toggle altogether?
    Any help would be appreciated.

Settings > General > Lock/Unlock shoud still appear.
You must be running iOS 7 (which you presumably are doing on an iPad Air).  And you should be using a Smart Cover or Smart Case made by Apple.  Third party covers/cases may well not function.
