Older Airport Express, Airport Utility

I have an older (about 2005-2006 vintage) Airport Express that is used as a satellite base station (network extender?). This old Express works flawlessly to extend a household / home office network and to allow for a workgroup printer to be connected in the office.
The "mothership" is currently an aging (2004 vintage) round white Airport Extreme, which has been having problems. We just bought a refurbished late-model Airport Express from Apple direct to replace the old Extreme as the "mothership". (The current "mothership" is connected via Ethernet cable to a DSL modem, so it is our network hub and our gateway to the internet.)
I'm thinking seriously about reconstituting the LAN situation; shut everything down, disconnect the old Extreme, and plug-in the new Express and build a new LAN with new network ID, password, etc. to save time and headache. No decision has been made yet. Nothing has been done.  Problem: the "old" Airport Express is vital to what we do. We need to incorporate the "old" Express into the "new" network.
I tried launching the Airport Admin Utility on one of our newer (2012/2013) computers today, and the Utility cannot access either the "old" Extreme or the "old" Express. The Utility says these devices are not supported by this version of the Utility software. If I do go ahead and rebuild the LAN with a new "mothership" ("new" Express), network ID and password, how do I program the "old" Express to join the "new" LAN?

Regarding your idea.....
You do not mention whether you want the Expresses to connect to the D-Link modem/router using wireless, but I assume that you do.
The new and old AirPort Express devices might be able to be configured to wirelessly "join" the wireless network provided by the D-Link modem router, so the printers could connect to the Expresses as they do now.
The only way to know whether this will really work or not would to try it by resetting both Expresses back to default settings and setting them up again.
I think you may be forgetting that you will still have a problem trying to configure the older Express though, since you will need a different version of AirPort Utility to do so for that device. Do you have a Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or a PC to configure the older Express?
Neither Express will be able to "extend" the wireless signal provided by the D-Link modem/router, since Apple's "extend" feature is proprietary.........it only works among Apple devices. So, the Expresses will not provide any extended wireless signal coverage for the D-Link modem/router network.
IF....you want to use the new Express as it is already set up now.....AND....you want a second Express to wirelessly extend the signal from the first Express......AND....you want to be able to configure and administer each AirPort Express using the 10.9.5 operating system that you have......there is a solution:
Replace the old AirPort Express with another new AirPort Express.

    I usually use my old Imac as a wifi sender. It's running on a VPN, cable plugged directly in the wall.
    Please explain step by step what I should do. For now, I plugged the Airport in the wall and plugged the Ethernet cable in it. It lights green (no flashing). But Airport Utility (the new one and the old one) doesn't detect it and I don't have an option to set a new Airport. There is "configure others" but then it asks for address and password.

  • Updated airport utility will not work on older Airport Extreme

    I have a mid-2011 Macbook Air with OS 10.9.4. So that's up-to-date. I recently updated my Airport Utility to version 6.2. I have an old Airport Extreme. The new Airport utility will not work with the old Airport Extreme. Apple will not let me download the older Airport Utility, because I have a newer one installed: classic Catch-22. Any ideas? I need to find out my SSID to connect with a new Denon AVR receiver. Is there any way to find out my SSID with Airport Utility?

    You must first uninstall AU 6.2 before you can install an older version. This may be removed by the mods so get it while you can:

  • Airport Utility 6.0 where are Printers settings? Disks settings are very limited.

    After update to Airport Utility v.6.0 on my Airport Extreme I found that new versions has no Printers settings at all. I can see my printer on my Macs as well I can manage it from another Mac having older Airport Utility version, but not from a new one....
    Additionally, new Airport Utility version has very limited settings for managing disks connected to it.
    I even, at the beginning, was thinking that it put Airport Express firmware to my Extreme.
    Firmare update works fine. An update on Express was not smooth, as it lost conncectivity with my Extreme, but after reset it - I got it back (the upgrade changed network name that an Express is talking to an Extreme by removing brackets from its wifi name)

    My catch-all list of Airport 6.0 & Firmware 7.6.1 problems:
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I've compiled a catch-all list of problems and changes with Airport Utility version 6.0 and FW 7.6.1. Some of the items may be relevant to this thread.
    THE PROBLEMS WITH AIRPORT UTILITY 6 AND FIRMWARE 7.6.1:
    Introduction: If you find AirPort Utility v6.0 too limiting or strange, you can ALSO install AirPort Utility v5.6, released alongside v6.0, to maintain all your previous capabilities. It works fine with both Airport g and n devices.
    PLEASE NOTE: According to Apple you must FIRST install Airport Utility v6.0 in order to access and install Firmware upgrade 7.6.1. Do that first. THEN install Airport Utility v5.6 and use it instead if you prefer.
    1) According to Apple's documentation, Airport Utility version 6.0 is ONLY for Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. It is NOT for 10.6 Snow Leopard. If you accidentally installed v6, you'll have to dig around in Apple - Support - Downloads for the previous relevant version for your devices and OS version. Here is the relevant page:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1483
    2) The HELP for Airport Utility has been updated. When you first access it you may well be looking at the old Help. It is supposed to update itself spontaneously over the Internet. It took a couple minutes in my case. Be sure you are looking at the NEW Help before you start using it. One way to tell is that the list of help topics essentially doubles from what there used to be. Also, the very first topic in the NEW Help should read:
    "Set up an AirPort device > Set up a new AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule"
    3) The HELP has some WRONG information. Here we go:
    3a) There is NO "Enable Guest Network" setting. You CANNOT create a guest network or name it or give it any settings. Why this is still listed in Help, I have no idea. Why the setting is gone: This is most likely because the technology behind guest networks, WPS, has been thoroughly CRACKED in the wild. Google "WPS cracked" for lots of documentation of the situation. It won't be resolved soon.
    3b) I can't find any 'Setup Assistant". Everything is now manual. This is not to say that there isn't a setup assistant that appears when you FIRST set up your Airport device. I don't know.
    4) After installing Airport Utility v6.0, there is no indication of the accompanying firmware update until you decide to run the new version. Even then, you have to click on the big icon of your Airport device and notice an 'Update' button about halfway down the popup window. You then have to assume that this button is telling you to update your firmware.
    5) After you update your Airport device's firmware, you may well discover an ERROR subwindow popping up inside Airport Utility that says:
    "An error occurred while updating the firmware. -6721"
    Don't panic! All you need to do is go into your Wi-Fi settings, either in your menubar or the Network preferences, and turn OFF Wi-Fi, then turn ON Wi-Fi again. This is part of a long standing bug in Lion's Wi-Fi with which I bet you are already familiar, certainly up through Lion version 10.7.2.
    6) Miscellaneous changes in Airport Utility 6:
    6a) The keyboard command to manually change your Airport devices settings is GONE. You have to click the little 'Edit' button after clicking on the big icon for your device.
    6b) There is no longer any summary window for your Airport device. You have to instead click on the big "Internet" icon for related data, then click on the big icon for your Airport device for local settings data.
    6c) There is no longer any HELP advising users to EXPORT their settings. (The Help only talks about Import of settings). BE SURE TO EXPORT YOUR NEW SETTINGS! I did this immediately after both updates.
    6d) MAC address filtering for Airport devices is GONE.
    6e) All references to IPV6 anywhere are GONE. I have to assume the IPV6 settings are now entirely working and entirely automatic. Let's hope so.
    6f) Signal and Noise data and graphs are GONE. Use Apple's Wi-Fi Diagnostics app instead. Apple have hidden it here in Lion:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/W-Fi Diagnostics
    6g) In order to access the menu items in Airport Utility, you have to first click on the big icon for your Airport device.
    --> No doubt there are other changes, oddities or bugs related to these changes. But this is what I came up with during a cursory strafing of the software.
  • New Airport Extreme cannot be found by Airport Utility
    Previous to purchasing this new Airport Extreme(DualBand "N") I had the older model Airport Extreme. I also have two Airport Express devices. Previously, all 3 were detected immediately by Airport Utility and NEVER dropped off.
    Last week I replaced my Airport Extreme with a new one so that I could use the dual band feature and the guest access.
    Since then I cannot get Airport Utility to discover/find the new Airport Extreme. I can ONLY access it by using the Airport Utility > Configure Other... option.
    I've tried removing all devices except Airport Extreme.
    I've tried Airport Utility by wirelessly connecting to Airport Extreme.
    I've tried Airport Utility by hard wiring to Airport Extreme.
    I've tried factory default settings
    I've tried factory reset
    I've tried setting values manually
    I've tried setting values automatically
    I've tried older Airport Extreme firmware versions
    I've tried older Airport Utility software versions
    I've tried running Airport Utility from laptop
    I've tried running Airport Utility from desktop
    I've tried running Airport Utility from remote desktop
    I've tried waiting
    What is the problem with this device/software ????? I should add that at this moment the Airport Extreme firmware and Airport Utility are both fully updated.
    Thanks,
  • Airports disappeared from airport utility
    While trying to add a 2nd airport express (new type, old type added already) to to my airport extreme based wifi network (to extend it) all 3 have disappeared from the airport utility. The wifi network has of course gone to. Stuck now, tried soft reset of base station. Where to start anew?
    Called Apple for support (as the new airport is under guarantee). 1 hr 40 mins later all sorted. Need a supervisor to talk me through it though. Neil - what a star!!
    Need hard rests, downloading the older Airport Utility, & ano all 3 are up & running well. Very satisfied
    Suddenly, my time capsule will not allow more than one computer to connect to the internet at a time.     Thanks
    I use a DSL to connect to the internet. The modem is a Westell C90-810030-06. Two things happened in connection with the fail. I upgraded the firmware in both my Time Capsule (connected to the DSL) and the Airport Extreme (connected to my printer--used to extend the network). I also upgraded my Colof Nook to the Android Faux Tablet version. I can't imagine that that is creating some sort of mismatch.
    I have now downgraded the firmware on the Time Capsule to 7.4.1 which is what I had before. Fortunately, I found the trick to downloading the older airport utility to find the older firmware. All the older versions disappeared from my computers.
    I still have the same problem. Wifi works fine. If a second device connects to the wifi, then it works fine, but the first no longer has a connection.
    And my Airport Extreme is not working at all. It cannot be seen by the computer. I tried resetting it. I'm going to connect it by ethernet and downgrade the firmware on it.
    I appreciate any help. This is so frustrating.
  • Ps3   Airport Utility 6.1 help?
    So i'm trying to do two things:
    1. Give me ps3 a static IP address and portforward a game.
    2. Sharing my 3tb harddrive with the airport extreme via usb port on the ps3.
    I've tried doing some research on the first issue and even attempted using portfowarding.com but I only find information on using the older airport utility. Thought it would be straight forward but once I try a internet test on the PS3 it recieves an ip address but no internet connection.
    If you need a screen shot of the ps3 settings I'll gladly post one. Just not sure what information i need to take off of it. :|
    I found some guides here as well but again using the older airport utility. So any help would really be appericated.
    For my second problem, I just recently switched my Linksys router to the Airport Extreme. Before I was able to plug in a harddrive in the back of the router and of course share my moves and files with the ps3. I reformated my harddrive after getting the Extreme from NTFS to Fat32. When i plug the harddrive in I can access it on all my computers no problem (rather pc or mac)...but I can get it to appear on the ps3. I know after you plug it into the ps3 it automaticly drops a file on there for you. So i did that but still no luck after plugging it back into airport. Any help or tips?
    Please check to make sure that you are downloading and installing AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion ......and not AirPort Utility 5.6.1 for Mac.
    If you check the data sheet, you will see that AirPort Utility 5.6.1 cannot be installed on a Mac running Lion.
    You should also be running Lion 10.7.4 if you are up to date on that operating system on your Mac.
  • Airport utility 5.6 wont install on OS 10.7.5
    downloaded airport utility 5.6 but install failed multiple times
    trying to install on 2.66 ghz imac with OS 10.7.5
    Sorry, but Apple does not support the installation of the older AirPort Utility 5.6 on newer operating systems like Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite.
    If you have an older AirPort device that needs AirPort Utility 5.6 for administration, you can do is use.....or borrow for a few minutes....... an older Mac running Leopard or Snow Leopard, or a PC with AirPort Utility installed on the device.
    Yes, there are probably hacks on the Internet that you could try, but you would have to install software from an unknown source and override standard security settings on your Mac if you decide to do this. Definitely not recommended, since there is no help if something goes wrong.
  • AirPort Utility 5.3.2--is it safe yet
    About 3 weeks ago, I posted my travails after updating my TimeCapsule's firmware to the latest version and my AirPort Utility to 5.3.2. (I basically lost my entire wi-fi network--which came back only after downgrading back to APU 5.3.1, doing multiple resets, gnashing of teeth, mystical incantations and contemplating sacrificing my firstborn, which is inadvisable given that he's my only child and is 23). Every few days, Software Update pops up cajoling me to update AP Utility 5.3.2 and I keep telling it to get lost. Is it safe to update yet or should I wait for 5.3.3?
    I also upgraded my iPodTouch 8GB to the 2.0 software, which for $10 got me access to all these cool new apps......and now it either can't see my wi-fi network or if it does, rejects my password (even though I enter it EXACTLY as I do on my computers. Tried every reset suggestion posted on these discussion boards, to no avail. Would I have to update AP Utility to 5.3.2 for my iPod to regain wi-fi access, and if so, how could I prevent 5.3.2 from taking down my entire network again? (If only the Geniuses made house calls....)
    Help!
    I'm also one of the AirPort Utility 5.2.1 downgrade users, but it's because I've PPPoE issues with AX 6.3 firmware. And after downgrading to 6.1.1 firmware, the older AirPort Utility 5.3.1 couldn't setup the AX. So hence, the 5.2.1 downgrade from 5.3.1. But I just upgraded to AirPort Utility 5.3.2, and my PPPoE is working fine. But I still dare not yet to upgrade the AX firmware to 6.3.
    Why should I have to spend money to solve this problem? Many others have the same concern, Airport Utility 6 does not support  older Airport Express units. This is Apple's problem. I've tried many solutions proposed on the net but none worked. I'm still trying for a work around.
  • Current version of airport utility will not connect with older airport express
    I was given an older aiport express that I want to add to my network for iTunes sharing.  I have an airport express and aiport extreme currently.  I am running Mac OS x 10.7.5.  My current version of airport utility does not support this express and it tells me to download utility version 5.6. When i try to install version 5.6 i get an error message that tells me to contact software manufacturer.  I'm sure there is a simple fix but I don't know what to do.  Any help would be great!
    Hi
    again , at least for getting 5.6 installed, look at my post earlier, or better to JEFFY's and download an much better alternative "unpkg", to get it ( 5.6) on to  your  mac.
    Then, though, getting to use it to configure your older AP as I attempted is anothe matter. I didn't succed so far..
    Good luck to you. If it works pse tell .
    Thanks.
  • Older model Airport Express won't work with Mountain Lion Airport Utility
    just upgraded to Mountain Lion and noticed that of my network of three airport expresses connected to various stereo speaker systems throughout the house, one of the older models won't work with the supplied version of Airport Utility (v 6.1). Here is the message it gives in the utility when I attempt to select this particular Airport Express:
    "This version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this base station. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure or manage this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at AirPort Service and Support."
    Well, I go to download v 5.6 and none of the versions available will install on Mountain Lion! (even the version for Lion) Catch 22.
    Any resolution to this (other than having to go out and buy a newer version Airport Express)?
    i cannot install airport utility 5.6 onto my computer although i need it to configure an older airport express and base station
    Here is my method.. the software is free that is required.. always a good point.
    How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
    Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
    Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
    You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.
  • TS4597 I am using an Airport Extreme as my base station and I want to extend its range using a recently purchased AirPort Express.  However neither device is showing up on my AirPort Utility on either my older MacBook Pro or my IPad 4.  What do I do?
    I am using an older AirPort Extreme as my base station and I want to extend the range by using a recently purchased AirPort Express.  When I try to find either device using the AirPort Utilities function on either my new IPad 4 or my older MacBook Pro neither device is detected.  However the utility is seeing that we are connected to the Internet which is through the Extreme.   What am I doing wrong?
    For now, leave the AirPort Express powered off.
    Power off the entire network....all devices.....in any order that you want
    Wait a few minutes
    Power up the modem first, and let it run 2-3 minutes by itself
    Power up the AirPort Extreme next, and let it run a full minute
    Keep powering up devices one at a time about a minute apart until everything is powered up (leave the Express off for now)
    Open AirPort Utility and check to see if the AirPort Extreme is visible.
    If it's not, click the AirPort Utility menu at the upper left of the screen, then click About AirPort Utility. Post back with the version number of AirPort Utility that you see there....which should be AirPort Utility 5.6.1.
    Post back on your progress.
