Older but upgraded MBP running slow... no obvious cause.

Hello all and thanks in advance for anything you have to share.
My mid-2007 15" MBP has gotten slow in basic finder functions and opening/switching/closing programs with no obvious bottleneck.  I use Activity Monitor regularly, and there is often a very low CPU load, never any RAM pressure (which I find suspicious, but I do have 6 GB installed), and I'm not running any particularly high demand software (usually Safari with a few tabs open, mail, Word or maybe Excel).
I'm considering doing a clean install of Yosemite (currently running Mav), but I wish I knew if there were anything else causing a particular bottleneck at the moment.  If you can tell me exactly what/why I'm running slow (i.e. some hardware issue that will force me to upgrade), that's fine, I just want to know what it is.  Even as I'm typing these letters, I'm typing 2 or 3 words faster than the text appears on the screen, yet the CPU is running around 20% and RAM indicates 3.6 out of 6 GB used.
System profile below from EtreCheck.  Thanks in advance for any help!
Problem description:
General slowness and lag opening programs, switching windows/programs, etc.  Not related to download speeds.  No obvious cause, processor usage and memory pressure (RAM) both appear fine/low most of the time, yet computer is just slow.

  • Late 2007 MBP Running Slow

I've been noticing lately that my MBP is running slow. It took 2 and a half minutes to load to my desktop after pressing the power button. A month ago, this computer would be to the desktop in 35-45 seconds. I have a 120gb HDD, There is still 35gbs free, so it's not like I'm using the HDD to full capacity. It is a 2.2GHz Dual Core processor with 2gbs of RAM, it shouldn't be going this slow after having it for 11 months.
It takes about 25 seconds for firefox 3 to load up and about 45 seconds for iTunes to load. My friend was over my house and he was surprised by the sluggishness of my computer. He also has a MBP (an older version actually) and his doesn't run this slow.
Any suggestions on how to get my computer back to speed?

This will certainly not be any help, but I'm experiencing the same thing. I have an original MBP, 2.0GHz Core Duo, maxed out to 2GB of RAM. It's almost excruciating how slow it is. When I got it, it would boot in about 29 seconds. Right now I'm up to over 2 minutes to boot. My apps are running slower than ever, and multitasking is almost out of the question.
My next step is to downgrade back to Tiger. That's on my list of things to do this week, so I'll try to post back at how things go.
I'm having eerie flashbacks to my Windows days. Yikes.

  • Mbp running slow after sleep mode

My MBP runs extremely slow after sleep mode (closing lid). It seems like Safari will take up much RAM. But I use a memory freer which supposedly should solve the problem. So after all I am not sure what is the real cause and what could solve this.
BTW it runs normally after a reboot.
Mine is a mbp 13" refurb purchased in March, 2012.
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5, 4GB RAM

I too have been noticing problems in slow behavior after sleep mode.  It has gotten so bad I have been restarting it regularly or shutting down much more regularly.  It behaves almost like normal after a re-start.
It is almost like the hard drive is failing? Last time this happened I put a new HD in.  I am usually running a large number of different programs, always multi-tasking, which has been a mac fortie. Seems worse with the last few updates.  My I mac is 24" imac 2008 model. replaced drive just before apple care expired.

Any help is greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance,
    Eli

Call the Apple store asap. Let them know what is going on, and make an appointment with the genius.  Make sure it gets taken care of before your 1 year warranty runs out in 2 months (unless you have AppleCare).  If this issue was happening and was "fixed", obviously it wasn't and Apple needs to take care of this.

  • My Mac desktop became unplugged from the monitor, I reinstalled everything but it is running slow now

Recently my 3+ year old Mac desktop monitor became unplugged while the power was on. I had to reinstall everything and went through a tough time doing so as I don't really know much about computers. I feel now my Mac is running slow and photo booth is quitting unexpectedly and such. What the heck did I do here? Can I be fixed? Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks

Why in this would you want  or need to do any thing other than reconnect??
Maybe something else you aren't saying and left  out? power outage?
    unplugging a computer would.
Not having a UPS is even what I consider unwise.
not having bootable backups is another.
And is this forum for what you have? obviously not still using PowerPC iMac.

  • Macbook Lion Upgrade Now Runs Slow

I have a white mid-2010 Macbook. 2.26 GHz Intel Duo, with 4 GB RAM. Ever since I upgraded to Lion, the spinning color wheel is all I see. It runs slow, everything. Is there anything I can do?

I don't think that will make a difference. I have a MacBook Pro i7 with 7Gb RAM and still suffering from the effects of OS Lion. The OS is killing a very respectable laptop spec. You have 2 options, backgrade to 10.6 or hold out and wait for some serious updates from Apple.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

  • Early 2011 MBP running slow on Mavericks

My MBP is considerably slower since installing Mavericks.  A start-up takes nearly 2 minutes now.  Running multiple applications, and switching between them, will result in spinning beachballs.  Viewing a video inside a browser window will grind the entire system to a halt.  Below is my EtreCheck report.  Any suggestions are appreciated.

After performing some general housekeeping, I'm happy to say my MBP's performance has improved.  Besides the general cleanup, I stopped using Google Talk within the browser and integrated it into the native Messages app.  I also removed the unnecessary MySQLCOM from the startup items.  And as mentioned above, I removed GPG Tools.  I also disabled Dropbox on startup, but have since re-enabled it, as it made no difference in performance.
From the time I press the power button, it takes about 55 seconds before the white startup screen gives way to the UI.  It takes another 60 - 120 seconds to get the first app/program running and functional, depending on the app/program.  This is a great improvement over before.  But prior to installing Mavericks, it took about 10 seconds and 30 seconds, respectively.
So at this point, I wonder if there's anything else I can do to speed things up, besides install more memory.  I'm not even sure if more memory would help with the startup process.  I've pasted my latest EtreCheck below.

  • Can anyone help with my 2010 mbp running slow i.e. games are very laggy and slow to open apps

i have a 2010 mbp and i cant run games that i was able to run flawlessly a couple months ago im not sure if iv done somethin to cause this issue i really only use my comp to watch movies and videos nothin that i would think would slow it the way it has if someone could give me some advise as to how to get it running 100% again it would be much appreciated

Use this as a trouble shooting guide:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3521
Check the status of your HDD.  Open DisK Utility>First Aid and run Verify and Repair.  Also is the HDD full?  Often that is a problem.
    Try a Safe Boot:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564
Often third party applications have a negative affect on performance.  Performance or cleaning apps as well as anti-virus apps are often the culprit and should be deleted.
    Ciao.
You might also open Activity Monitor and examine if additional RAM might be useful.
Note that Macs are not good gaming machines.

  • MBP running slow after 10.9.2 update

I have a late 2011 macbook pro & here's what's going on, it takes up to 10 minutes or so just to boot up, plus another 5 to 8 minutes to log in while watching the spinning ball, when I eventually log in, it takes about 30 seconds to a minute & a half opening apps or just a finder window, once open it appears to be running fine for a bit, then its slow again, then fast again & the cycle repeats itself, when I check activity monitor kernel_task is taking up half my memory of 4GB, this has never happened before & I was very happy with my macbook pro running 10.9.1.
I've searched everywhere for everything to with mackind & I haven't come across any solution, I've tried the SMC & PRAM reset, verbose & safe mode, even clean install on a new hard drive & it still runs very slow. somebody please help me, I've tried everything I could find on the internet, I'm just about to give up. HELP!

This is what I got from EtreCheck, if anybody can help me understand what it all means I'd be very greatful.

  • MBP running slow after new battery is installed.

    Hello everyone.
I just had a new battery installed in my Macbook Pro (from May 2008) a couple days ago and since then it runs extremely slow when I run more than one application. I have been trying to run Google Chrome and Microsoft Excel simultaneously and both lock up and shut down. I wasn't having issues before the new battery was installed. Is this problem related to the new battery or is something else going on?

Something else, I'd suppose - isn't that model a simple move two catches battery swap?
    anyway - I'd try resetting the pram - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
    and smc - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
and perhaps see if console has any clues for us - also see what activity monitor says for memory & cpu use when the slow-downs occur. Are other apps affected? if they shut down/crash - a report might show something relevant. You can also helpfully test in a New User Account

  • Running Slow, Displaying information I can't find...

I have a MacBook Pro and when I run any application it runs slow. At first I thought, 'It is almost full, I should clear it.' I did, about 30 gigs of it but it is still running incredibly slow. I've looked into About This Mac and it says there is 100.27 GB worth of Movies. I have no idea what these movies are but I can't locate them anywhere on my mac. Anything that I did have on my mac I transfered to an external harddrive and had deleted (or so I thought). I've run OmniDiskSweeper but even that can't locate the movies. Aparently there is 56.31 GB worth of Other things on there too! I have it plugged into power but it still runs slow. I've been meaning to take it in to have the battery replaced (or serviced as it has notified me a couple times but just dissapears) as it has done 757 Cycles, which I assume is recharges. Just choosing the Apple logo and then About This Mac takes about 30 seconds per selection. Any gesture takes forever to load as well. Choosing another window take ten to fifteen seconds to swap over. So any selection really takes ten to forty seconds to swap over. I've shut down, and restarted my computer but still no luck. I'm a little confused as the only time I have EVER experienced this - and I don't mean to start any quarrels - was with a Windows computer.
I'll give you an indication of how slow it is. I've opened Safari and have Apple as my home page. Twenty-five minutes have passed by but the loading bar is sitting comfortably with the 'o' in .com. Running pages takes forever to load and so does keynote. As does Word and PowerPoint. I do not know what else to do. I've been cleaning things off and erasing free space, deleting trash and deleting trash securely. I'm at a loss! My MacBook has never run this slow and has been so relaible until this pass couple months. I'm confused. The following is what my Mac is...
    MacBook Pro
    13-inch, Mid 2009
    Version 10.8.4
Processor 2.35 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
I probably sound like a clueless fool, but I've never had problems like this. Usually I'm the one helping my friend, parents, and other colleagues with computer matters. Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated!
