Older Cameras and Final Cut Pro 7

Hello all!
I dug out my old SONY DCR-TRV520 this weekend so my son could start playing around with a camera of his own. The camera is a Digital8 camera and has the 4 pin iLink(FW400) interface.
I have used it many, many times in my college days with older versions of Final Cut, up to 4. However when I plugged it in today and turned on Final Cut..it wouldn't launch. As soon as I unplugged the camera, Final Cut sprang to life. However, when I turned on Log & Capture it was not detected.
The only other FW drive I have is a 2TB FW800 drive for my video scratch & render and even with that unplugged I couldn't get the camera to be recognized.
Is there something that has changed that will not allow these older cameras to work anymore or is it just specific to this model? It was on the list of compatible cameras for Final Cut 4 but 3 versions is a lot of code changes.
Any ideas?

Thanks for the replies.
The camera is plugged in direct and it is in VTR Mode. I am going to try my archived version of iMovie 2.0.1 and see if that works on my 'ol 10.3 rig. If that doesn't work then I am going to see what I can do on the Windows side of things.
Oh, I an I tried the capture preset of Non-Controlable device and that still didn't work. The camera only has a 1/8" A/V out port and FW 400 4-pin interface so no USB support. The camera came out when USB 2.0 was still a gleam in a certification board's eye.
SONY's PMB software doesn't support tape based media and VEGAS 9 will not recognize the camera on a FW400 port. The only other option is to use my HDPVR and the S-Video out and encode it manually which will be just fine.
I do actually have a SONY AVCHD HDD cam and I love it. My kid is only 6 so it is still on the list of daddy's toys that he is not allowed to play with. I plan to teach him on film and tape before he graduates to HD what not but he is a bit away from that.
Just like I won't let him play Super Mario Galaxy until he beats the original Super Mario Bros.
But I will probably keep dinking with it until I get it to work and if I find a solution I post it.

    Hello Everyone.
Looking to see what kind of video deck I would need to edit with. I might have a project in which a client video some project using the Sony EX1 cameras.
I'm using Final Cut Pro 5.0.4
    Any help would be great.
The client is from Canada, and I'm State side.
    Thanks

This camera shoots tapeless...no deck. But the bad news is that your version of FCP doesn't support the format this camera shoots. You need at least FCP 6.

  • GF-cam and Final cut Pro

    Hi,
The company that I work for as an editor is going to invest in some nice, new Ikegami HDS-V10 camera's. We work with FCP 7 so I have to find out what will be the best workflow for our systems with the material the camera produces. The camera records MXF files and the best solution so far is a an application from Calibrated software which let's me import MXF files straight into my FCP project ready for editing (other programs such as MXF for mac don't seem to work?).
So this works. However, there are a couple of concerns that I have. Namely: The clips in the first test project that I did turned white when I opened it a couple of months later! I mean white, as in no content... I could still import the clips from the original folder in my finder, but FCP would not reconnect them with the clips in my sequence or bin.
And the other thing is that the way this calibrated plugin works is that it creates a .mov reference clip next to the original clip in it's original folder(to trick FCP I guess). Now the problem is that we are also starting with final cut server and I can imagine that all these double-files could become confusing for the whole folder-structure and automated processes such as making proxy files from watch folders and such...
Maybe this is a problem that can be solved with conversions or what have you (suggestions?), but I was thinking that the best solution would be to find a way to make the camera record in QT. Maybe with an external recording device such as the the Atamos Ninja, or the SSD recording system from blackmagic? I don't know if this would work on these camera's or how convenient it would be. I mean: I can imagine our cameraman wouldn't enjoy having to press rec on an external device mounted the back of his camera.
Does anybody have any experience with any of these, or other systems? Or with the whole HDS-V10/FCP/FCserver workflow? Please let me know.
    Greetings,
    Robin

I'd set up a Compressor droplet to automatically convert your MTS files to ProRes as they are copied onto your SAN. Then FCS manages only the ProRes files and you keep the MTS files separate as backup only.
The Calibrated plugin works with QuickTime so this should allow Compressor to successfully open the files. Then you'll never need to deal with it again as you actually edit. A little extra work up front on ingest will make your life much much easier. Here's how to make a droplet:

What is the best way to deal with the issue of AVCHD files not running native in FCP
Am I doomed to a life of Transcoding?
    Ric

It would be nice if we could at least drop AVCHD into a sequence for cutting and choosing rather than making those commitments at the ingest stage.
At that point use Media manager to Transcode so we can continue editing in a proper codec.
A few years ago you couldn't drop HDV into FCP either. And the same attitude that you get about AVCHD now was spewed about HDV.
HDV certainly isn't a "proper" codec either. But at least we can see it. Some day native AVCHD playback will be in FCPs bag of tricks too.
So, as far as I'm concerned the OP's question is valid and intuitive. And it deserves a better response than "... If you don't like the way Final Cut deals with the media use a different application."
    ricsyme,
Apple will eventually get around to supporting the type of functionality you're seeking. I can almost guarantee that.
But don't think "... Am I doomed to a life of transcoding.."
the way I look at it is "... I'm so happy to be liberated from logging & capturing tape!..."
Even in it's current state, Log & Transfer of AVCHD is soooo much better than Log & Capture of tape.
And for the time being you can also use ClipWrap to "rewrap" mts files to .mov and then use media manager to transcode after you do your initial cutting. Just don't try to leave them in their rewraped state any longer than you have to.
    best,

  • Canon EOS 5D Mark II viedos and Final Cut Pro

Photographer Vincent Laforet have posted the original clips made with the new Canon EOS 5D Mark II. This camera could be record movies 1920x1080p in H.264.
The clips could be downloaded here: http://blog.vincentlaforet.com/2008/09/26/original-raw-clips-from-reverie-now-av ailable-for-download/
I've tested this video on two MacBook Pro, a 15" and a 17" HD, all with 4GB of RAM and Intel Core 2 Duo 2.5 GHz.
The video is flicking every 5 seconds, on Quicktime Pro and Final Cut Pro 6.
I've created a Sequence in HDTV 30fps and imported the clips. The next step was to import the clips. FCP asked me to change the video and audio settings of the timeline with the settings of the MKII. The video is flicking every 5 seconds.
I can't imagine what computer I should use.
I've seen the Xserve in the making of and I think that Vincent have used its to edit the footage with FCP. A last model of professional laptop from Apple is unable to do this.

    Hey Guys:
According to a recent analysis by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, the h264 video captured in camera is one I-frame for each 15 P-frame. No B-frames. You can read the full report here:
    http://nrkbeta.no/video-test-clips-from-canon-5d-mark-ii-gets-analyzed/#comment- 58420
I've posted a short video tutorial explaining the process to convert the source h264 files to Apple ProRes 422. IMHO, converting to the i-frame Apple ProRes 422 codec as early in the post process as possible will save time and headaches down the line. You can check out the video tutorial here:
    www.petersalvia.wordpress.com.
Theoretically, by converting to ProRes you could work with the footage on a PC if you install the ProRes Decoder for Windows. That decoder is available here:

    Hope this helps!

  • HDC-SD9, iMovie 7.1.2, QuickTime 7.5, and Final Cut Pro

After I read the post, I tested it on my Mac. I can safely say that I can import videos from HDC-SD9 using iMovie and Final Cut Pro now.
Update to QuickTime 7.5 and iMovie 7.1.2 to make this camera work with the Mac.
It seems to be working with Final Cut Pro too.

That sounds promising! I will install the update tonight and let you know if the same goes for me!

  • Panasonic and Final Cut pro on iMac

    Hello
    I have a Panasonic HDC-HS80 Video Camera.
I work with Final Cut Pro 7.0.3 on an iMac with OS 10.6.7
Do I have to set a special recording Mode on my camera?
How Do I get my videos from the camera to Final Cut Pro, so that I can cut and edit them?
    Please help! Thanks

Your camera shoots AVCHD which is not an editing codec, so you'll need to convert your footage in ingest (ProRes LT or 422). Have a look at Shane Ross' tutorial on tapeless workflows:
    http://library.creativecow.net/ross_shane/tapeless-workflow_fcp-7/1
You will also need a fast external hard disk with FW800 connection (that will be your scratch disk).
I can't tell you what recording mode you should set but don't mix them if possible.

  • Sony DCR-HC42 and Final Cut Pro??

Can anyone verify that the Sony DCR HC42 digital video camera works with an G4 12" iBook and Final Cut Pro 5??
I want to buy this camera but want to make sure I can edit the footage with FCP.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Have you checked at Apple's Final Cut Studio web
    site:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/finalcutpro/qualif
    ication.html
It doesn't appear on the certified list.
    However, googling the cam reveals:
    http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Sony-DCR-HC42-Cam
    corder-Review.htm
Glad to help, but it's always good to be resourceful
    first.
The real issue is a G4 iBook with no second firewire
bus, the need for a firewire capture disk and FCP5.
You are not going to be very productive with this set
up and there will be issues of DF and throughput.
That iBook can't use much RAM
    best wishes
    Thanks, I appreciate the help.
I had already checked the FCP offical list - sorry did not mention in the post.
I had also checked a lot of other sites and found nothing clearly stating that the DCR-HC42 works with the G4 iBook and FCP - but I had seen a review from a customer (on some site) saying it did not work with thier iMac (where other cameras like Canon had) and they thought that it might be due to a video card issue??
As for the set up - not doing any major editing jobs so I think that I am OK.
Any more info would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Quicktime 7.5 and Final Cut Pro is there a problem?

Quicktime 7.5 and Final Cut Pro is there a problem with this version of Quicktime?
i cant capture at all now! I can control my camera but no capture or footage in the window?
I can capture using IMovie fine!

Alister, there's no problem with it on my Mac, nor none that I know of ... I think you must have an install specific issue.
Check your camera setting matches your currently chosen Easy Setup ... in fact, close the Log and Capture window, then go ahead and re-choose the appropriate Easy Setup for your camera and I/O hardware, then choose View menu > Refresh A/V Devices, and then reopen Log and Capture ...
... still no go? if not then post pack with complete details of your hardware and software, your camera, the recording format, any I/O equipment that is in the mix etc.

  • Buying Older Versions of Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Studio

Is it possible to get new older versions of Final Cut (Pro or Studio) from Apple?
    Or License Keys?
I'm not ready to take the plunge to the latest versions yet.
If not from Apple, where would I buy LEGAL versions?

Official Apple stores pull ALL old software the moment new versions come to market. For example, if you tried to purchase a copy of FCS from Apple the day after FCS2 was released, you'll be told it was no longer available. However, there can be a lot of software in other distribution channels - you just have to work harder to find it.
If you go the internet route, you need to be VERY careful that what you purchase will fit your situation. You do not want to be purchasing an UPGRADE package if you do not already own a qualifying product. The registration process will not work without the correct previous version's serial number (SN).
As an example of the subtlety of the situation, if the software is listed as the FCP 5.1 CROSSGRADE, it may or may not include a SN depending on the version it was intended to upgrade. I believe owners of v 5.0 did not get new serial numbers but users of 4.5 and earlier as well as those who had academic licenses received new serial numbers.
No matter what version you purchase, you need to receive all the install disks as well as all written material along with the serial numbers (if they were included - see above). I'm not trying to dissuade you but just letting you know there are a number of 'gotchas' out there.
    Good luck,
    x

  • I have a fairly new iMac wI now have iMovie events and Final Cut pro events that are duplicates.  Does that mean that all my video is copied onto my hard dive twice?

If I have video in imovie and final cut pro X, does that mean there are two copies of the video, one for each piece of SW?  If so, how do I get rid of the imovie events and keep only the Final Cut Pro X events (video)?  I don't want multiple copies of the same video stored on the hard drive.

If you import to FCP directly from the Camera or from a camera archive, you would likely import choosing Optimized Files which would go to a FCP event that is in ProRes 422 codec. This would be in addition to your iMovie Event which would import using the Apple Intermediate Codec. So you would have two copies of the same information. An AIC copy and a larger ProRes copy.
However, if you use FILE/IMPORT/iMOVIE EVENT LIBRARY, FCP will not duplicate the event files from iMovie. It will treat them as referenced files, and will point to the iMovie Event files in the reference. So there is no duplication. You will be editing Apple Intermediate Codec files in FCP.
However, FCP will create Event folders. In addition to the reference information, these will contain thumbnail files that are compatible with FCP, stabilization and analysis files that are compatible with FCP, as well as any intermediate render files that are associated with the Event.
So in this case, there is no duplication of the large event files, but there is some duplication of the small thumbnail files.
I have several terabytes of iMovie Events, which are now all available in FCP. Believe me, I would know if they were duplicated because all my disks would be full.

  • Canon Vixia HF100 24p and Final Cut Pro 7

    Hello all,
Just got the HF100 and Final Cut Pro 7. New to both. My plan is to shoot everything at 1920x1080 @24p. I've heard though, that the 24p on this camera has 3/2 inserted to make it 60i. My goal is to remove the 3/2 and do all editing and fx at 24p so I can have a universal master that I can then convert to various formats (Bu-Ray, DVD, web, etc., but will not ever go to tape). What is a good workflow/settings for this? Also one possible concern is disk space (so multiple codec suggestions would be great), but may be able overcome disk space if necessary. Again, I'm completely new to final cut (I do have some post experience, but am clueless to final cut right now). A long question, I know. Thank you in advance.

    ebrunoski,
Welcome to FCP 7 and to Canon AVCHD camcorders. I was in your shoes a couple of weeks ago, as I have a Canon HF11 and FCS 3 myself.
I also try to film and edit everything in 24p with my Canon and my recommendation would be to do exactly as suggested in this Apple tutorial and using Compressor:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2410
What it essentially teaches you is to (1) log and transfer your Canon 24p wrapped in 60i files, (2) make them "true" 24p in Compressor, and (3) use them back in FCP 7. Once the files have been compressed into 24p you can get rid of the ones you had logged and transferred in their 60i wrappers and use only the resulting 24p files.
Yes, it's an extra step in the process, but it's one efficient way of doing it.
    Works for me!

  • Is there a way to run Motion and Final Cut Pro on Separate Machines?

Is there a way to run Motion and Final Cut Pro from the same Final Cut Studio license on separate machines? We hadn't realised when we bought Final Cut Studio that it wouldn't allow this. Our editor doesn't use motion, and while I mainly use After Effects on our motion graphics machine, I was wanting to try using motion for some particle effects. Unfortunately, it won't let me open it while Final Cut is running on our editor's machine. I can understand not letting two copies of same application run under the same serial number at the same time, but it would be nice to be able to use both programs that we own concurrently. At very least it would be good to warn you that this isn't possible in the product description, not in some fine print license agreement once you have already bought the software.
    -Matt

I do not know of any software, in any platform that can operate from the same license over a network simultaneously. This is the exact reason for the existence of Volume Licensing. If for example a project ran in each one of the included applications from different sources that were not an active network, I doubt you would have a problem.Like, doing a project at work and geting the outcome with the Powerbook at home...Sorta!
