Older games on OS X

I want to introduce my son to some of my favorite games (Pool of Radiance, Lord of the Realm, Warcraft, Warcraft II, and Civilization 2).  However, his PowerBook G4 is running Leopard.  Anyone know an easy emulator I can use to do this?  Nothing too difficult please (I want him to understand this).
Thanks...

Sorry, have been away for a while and apparently was not clear on my original post.
These are games that I played on my Mac (OS 8.1-OS 8.5).  One was released in 1989 and the others were originally released circa 1995-1997 for the Mac platform.  I believe that there were Windows versions of these games...but I only have (and played) the Mac versions.
Basically, I guess I am asking if there is a way to play older Mac games (that ran on the PRE-OS X platforms).  I know at one time I was able to do this with a Powerbook G-3 running 10.3.  It would open a window called "Classic" and would run the game from there.  However, this does not seem to work on his Powerbook G4 (running 10.5.8).  So, I am looking for ideas...
Thanks

  • Macbook, bootcamp, and older games

    Hi
I am really new to gaming--so gamers go easy.
I will be installing XP via Bootcamp on my Macbook with the GMA X3100 chipset. I know that newer games, i.e. Fallout 3, won't play. But what I would like to do is play older PC games like Blade Runner, Bad Mojo, Fallout 1 and 2, GTA III, etc. gog.com and Steam have lots of older games I've never played--and I am content catching up on some of the classics.
Any thoughts? Will games from 4-5 years ago (and older) work OK?
    Many thanks

As long as your games are compatible with XP they should be OK.

  • Older Games

I have a new desktop HP 450 with I7 Intel, Win 7 Home Premium, and ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics, can I still play my regular older games like hidden objects, puzzles, etc?  They aren't the "high tech, high action" stuff.  If I load these games, will they change my graphics settings or anything on my monitor?  Things are perfect - DONT want to screw up anything!!!!!
    Thanks

    Hi catsears,
If they are vista compatible, chances are really good (but not 100% guaranteed) they'll work with Windows 7 without any further modification.
There are a few things you can do.  Firstly, you can set a restore point before installing any games, that way, if something does go wrong, you can go back to the restore point and bring your computer back to before you started.  See this document on how to create a restore point: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01835735&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en#N61
Once you have the restore point created, then install your games.  If any of them don't work, the next step would be to try compatibility mode, as outlined here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01853744&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en
I would select it to be compatible with whatever version of windows the game was originally intended for (XP, Vista, etc)
If compatibility mode doesn't work, then you may be out of luck for that particular title.

  • Running older games on OS X when classic is not supported

Could someone please advise me as how to run an old game (master of orion 2) on OS 10.5? When I try to run it, it states that classic environment is not supported. I don't understand why latest versions of mac OS would not be capable of running older games, which are apparently only runnable in an older frame. Is there a patch that can be installed to support classic environment programs, or is the only solution downgrading operating systems? This seems way more complicated than it should be, especially for a very simple game to run as far as graphics and cpu, etc.
    Please help! Thank you.

ebk0 , welcome to Apple Discussions.
Classic is not supported using Leopard, Snow Leopard or Intel Macs. Some users do use Sheep Shaver, with varying degrees of success. Many games do not work properly in classic mode, because some games use OS 9 to control the Mac hardware. They require the Mac to be booted in OS 9 (or below). Your best solution is to buy a used Mac capable of running OS 9.

  • Mac OS 8.6 and Mac OS 7.6 - Older Game Software - Need Help!

I am new owner of an iMac OS X 10.4.8 system and have children who are wanting some educational games software games for Christmas- I have found some on E-Bay (ie. Where In the World is Carmen San Diego) however, the requirements are OS 8.6–9.2, OS X.
In addition I would like purchase Emergency Room 3 by Legacy Interactive with the following requirements: MacOS 7.6 or later, 233MHz PowerPC or faster cpu, 32MB RAM, 16 bit color display, 16X or faster CD-ROM .
Question: If I purchase these games - will they operate properly on my Mac OS X (10.4.8)? Should I be prepared to experience any issues?
Hate to open them on Christmas morning and they not work.
    Please advise.
    Thanks in advance.

I have a lot of kids' software on CDs, bought over several years, and have since upgraded almost all the Macs to OS X.
On the slightly older G3, G4, or G5 Macs that preceded yours, when you tried to run CD software that was not OS X aware, it would cause the Mac to launch "Classic" -- an emulation of many (but not all) of the features of OS 9. That made most of the well-behaved CD software completely happy.
But my Macs can all still run Classic. Your Intel Mac can NOT run Classic.
Many vendors software requires the CD to be in the drive, but install a portion of the program onto the Hard Drive the first time it is run. It is therefore essential that the Administrator account is the one to first run the program. (If you have not already set up separate accounts for each of your kids, please do that now, even if you do not password them.)
If a CD says "OS X" it generally requires Mac OS X 10.2 or later, and will work fine on your Intel Mac.
If a CD says "OS 8.6–9.2, OS X" That means it requires a minimum of 8.6, but will also run under 9.1 or 9.2 or Classic or Mac OS X. Sometimes these programs will install a slightly different Hard Drive resident portion if installed under Mac OS X. If the program gives you a problem, the vendor's web site may set you straight with a quick download, which will modify the Hard Drive portion of the software to solve the problem.
If a CD says "7.6.1 or later", "8.5 or later", "9.1 or later" it has not acknowledged the existence of Mac OS X, and will not run on your Intel Mac. That is why the suggestion of getting a slightly older used Mac is a perfectly reasonable one.
It has always seemed bizarre to me that great kids software still followed the same cycle as new games. An initial rush at high prices, a slowing and discounts, and then not being able to find it anywhere. Great stuff like Reader Rabbit, Carmen SanDiego series, and the ClueFinders series, should never really "go out of style."
I am hoping that the coming of the new Microsoft Windows Vista Operating System for PCs will encourage educational software developers to "freshen" their best software for that environment, and that as long as they have it apart they will fix it up to run under Mac OS X, if they haven't done it already.

  • The Best Older Games - Final Fantasy XI

I'm sure all of us can relate to this situation:
So your computer is a bit old. The gerbil inside is starting get a bit slow and long in whiskers, and so you've tallied your bills, your income, and your emergency fund. Then you've created a sixty-page Power Point presentation and presented it your your wife, complete with pie charts and graphs explaining exactly how and why you need a new computer.
It takes a few weeks, but she finally breaks down and agrees. Yes, you may go out and buy a new computer.
You are proud, and u unbeknown to her, you have carefully crafted your plans not to include just a computer, but the hottest, greatest machine in the face of the planet. It is of such superiority that you can classify it but under a single word.
'Sweet.' (with an emphasis on the 'e's)
You get your new machine and set it up. You install all your prerequisites and get ready for an awesome experiance. Except, your wife walks in, and she smiles so sweetly at you and states, 'as long as we have a new machine, you might as well go out and buy a new game, right?'
Naturally, you are suspicious. Yet, when the woman declares free-for-all on the budget, you're not going to argue. After all, you earned it, you should be able to spend it, right? Right? So you go back to the store and spend an hour deciding which game you want, and rush home with the fantastic grin that only gamers are capable of having.
    You're excited.
Your wife, however, is sitting at the computer.
"Why honey," she said, all smiles, "Look, my facebook runs faster. I can now farm my grapes in half the time!"
"Great!" You say, annoyed, "When are you going to be done?"
"Oh," she states, wearing a bigger smile then even you had just a moment ago, "It's so fast! Probably not long. I do have six accounts, through, and I wanted to play some Pogo, as well!"
So you sit, and wait, and sit and wait, and soon it becomes obvious what has happened. Your wife has declared YOUR computer as HERS. You attempt to reason with her, and she throws your earlier conversation back at you. Yeah, yeah, family computer. Yes, yes, equal sharing, we can't afford to buy a machine for just one person. Yes.. but when is it my turn?
Never, apparently. You finally give up and acknowledge the fact that your computer time will be those moments when she's at work, and your not, or she's out shopping, and you managed to weasel out of going.
So, you were all excited about PC playing, so your Playstation 3, your XBox 360 and your Wii just isn't going to cut it today. You set up your old machine, thinking - well, at least you can find a GOOD game. A really good game, that will play on this older, less capable machine.
    And thus.. you read this...
    Final Fantasy XI
Designed by Square Enix, the authors of all the Final Fantasy series, this is the first (but not the last) Final Fantasy that is MMORPG. Which means it's a game played with hundreds of thousands of other players.
Well, it least it was in it's most popular time. Today, you can expect about three thousand people per 'server'.
Final Fantasy XI was at one point #2 behind World of Warcraft, and for good reason. It's a richly engaging online world, who's graphics more then beat World of Warcraft and most other online games without thought - even new, and modern ones. Yet, it requires very little resources to run.
The download is intense, admittedly, but I can attest, having had all sorts of internet connections in the past, that even the slowest 'broadband' speed will suffice. There are even some that still play under dial-up, through, that's pretty rare these days (and not recommended).
The world is rich and engaging, it's really fun, and you can use your PS2 style USB controller with it natively, once enabled in the configuration window. All buttons have function and it really saves you keyboard time, since the game was also authored for the Playstation 2. (It was the first MMORPG console game).
There have been numerous patches released, and everyone in the world is friendly - I would know, I just rejoined!

  • Older Games won't work...

I have Zuma and Musika, which I bought for my older 5.5 gen Video Ipod.
I recently bought a Classic and the games won't sync to it. I looked in the iTunes games store and they indicate only a couple of games are compatible with the Classic.
Is Apple going to update these games so they work on the Classic or are they just going to screw me out of my games?
Does anyone know the email for this type of support?

True. I helped them get even more richer this week by spending $350 on the Complete Bob Dylan and the Complete U2. Great stuff there. Apple is supposed to be making money and there is nothing wrong with that.
Next generation iPods will require new games then too.

  • Need help installing an older Game

    Hi fans
I dug out an old PPC game today that I haven't played for ages.  It's called Final Doom for the Mac LC-90KK086-030.  I think the software is circa 1996.
I try to run it's installer but it fails with the following message "You can't open the application Final DOOM Installer because the Classic environment is no longer supported.".
    Will installing Rosetta fix this?
To be honest I thought I had already installed Rosetta, but a Finder search has failed to locate it for some reason.

No; if it would, you would have already been asked to install it. It's a system component and not locatable by a search.
Use the PowerMac or eMac to play the game.

  • New gs60 laptop having huge framerate drops during older game

    Hi,
first off, im new to the MSI brand.
i bought my gs60 2pc earlier this week.
everything went fine untill i started playing starcraft 2.
when playing that game, all i have to do is move the camera and it becomes unplayable.
strange, since skyrim works amazing on ultra settings
does anyone have an idea as to what might cause this?
alrdy checked drivers, all up to date.
p.s. srry if i didnt spell everything right, english is not my first language

Does it overheat when playing starcraft 2? I read that there were some people that had overheating graphics card when playing the game and that there is no fix from Blizzard for that issue. If that's true then it seems the problem would be even more serious on a laptop. It could be that graphics on your computer is throttling down in speed to keep it from frying to death therefore resulting in poor gameplay performance.

  • New build older game question

I had a k7n420 pro with onboard video. I put together a msi p6n sli fi with a e6400,2gb 533 ram and msi 7300gt. I'm not a gamer but I had max payne. Installed the game it goes thru the intro but when I want to actually load the game it crashes with xpsp2 message about error report. I also tried mad onion 2001 but it did the same thing. I installed hitman code 47 and that works ok. Are they just too old? Do i need some kind of driver? I did a movie backup and was blown away by the speed. I thank all of You in advance for any replies.

My power supply is a soly tech sl-400tf +3.3v-30 amps..+5v-28amps..+12v1-14amps..+12v2-15amps..-12v-0.8amps..+5vsb-2amps. The card is a MSI nx7300gt-td256eh. I missed the directx 9 under utilities. I realized this after wiping the drive and installing xpsp1, max payne crashed upon clicking it and said needs directx 8.0 compatible vga adapter. I wiped the drive again loaded xp pro sp2 mainboard drivers and vga drivers along with directx 9 under the utilities tab. This is the point where I tried the old mad onion 2001 test and it crashed to the desktop after double clicking it so I uninstalled it and downloaded 3dmark 03. The test went without a problem score 7254. Device manager is fine too. I bought this board for the two ide ports with my 120gb hard drive on primary and dvd burner on secondary. I'm going to try Max Payne again and will post back.

  • Older 5th Gen IPOD Classic Games not syncing - HELP

I previously had a IPod Classic 30GB and purchased 2 games (Ms PacMan & Mahjong) these worked well on that IPod. I now have a new IPOD Classic 120GB and I have purchased 2 more games (UNO and Scrabble).
All games display in Itunes game although they are displayed on two different lines, but only the two new games (UNO and Scrabble) appear in the Games Sync area.
How do I get the original two games (Ms PacMan & Mahjong) to sync to these new IPod Classic?

Are those older games still available in the iTunes Store +iPod Click-Wheel Games+ section? If they are currently being sold, that current version is certain to be compatible with all game-playing click-wheel iPods.
If so, you may want to try sending an email to the iTunes Store support team. If you go here
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/
and follow one of the links under +Customer Service+, such as +Transfer Purchases+, and you will see a link that says +Contact Us+. Follow that link to a form you can fill out to send the email message. Explain the situation and ask if there is a way to get the newest version of those games you already paid for previously, when you had a 5th gen iPod.
