Older iMac giving me constant beach ball
Hi all,
I've got a semi-retired 2006 Intel Core2Duo 21" iMac. I say semi-retired because two years ago I took it from being my primary workhorse to my TV server - hooked the mini-DVI to the TV to act as my primary TV service.
Last week, I started getting the spinning beach ball after every couple of commands, so I tried restarting the computer. I restarted it and the entire OSX was corrupted and needed to be reinstalled. So I reinstalled with the latest edition of Snow Leopard and the computer is starting to do it again. After every couple of clicks, I get about a 30 second wait and a spinning beach ball. There is now a fresh install of OS X on the computer, and all my TV goes through either iTunes or Safari, so except for Flash and Silverlight, there are no other plugins or errant software. The system is clean.
Does anyone have any ideas? I recognize this computer is older and has been very heavily used since day one, but I'm not ready to write it off yet if I don't have to.
Thanks!!
Darn, I was hoping you wouldn't say that, but a dying hard drive is what I was thinking too
Any idea what the Apple Genius Bar would charge to replace/diagnose the problem? Have to decide if it is worth it to repair or simply replace with a Mini.

IMac 24 C2D freezing, beach ball, pinwheel
Hello wonderful user community!
I am helping my wife with this issue, she's never posted on the ASC before.
In the last two weeks my iMac has started behaving strangely. It doesn't seem to matter whether running Spotify, Chrome, Firefox, or other applications, I will get beach balls, seemingly at random intervals. If watching a video on Youtube or Netflix, the picture will freeze the but the audio will continue. You can't Force Quit or make any commands in other applications, so it seems to be system wide. If someone is playing a video from my hard drive from the LAN, their video playback will freeze. After 15 secs to a minute or more, the machine will resume normal operation.
What I've tried:
The OS was installed less than a year ago from 10.6 disk and updated to OS 10.6.8 using Combo Updater.
Disk Repair Permisions
Disk Repair (boot from external drive)
reset PRAM
Take to Genius Desk at Apple store (results inconclusive, no hardware issues)
Activity Monitor shows no app in particular hanging
I'm about to cut and run on this thing, put it on Craigslist, and move on.
Any light shed on this would be incredibly helpful. I work from this iMac while my daughter watches videos on a 2nd monitor throughout the day. At night it's our TV and we watch movies on it. Needless to say it's an integral part of our lifestyle.

Another clue: When watching a DVD disc, there are no freezes. This is the ONLY time we don't experience the 15 minute freeze cycle. Starting to think the harddrive is failing...
If you suspect the HD is failing then run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode , it is wise to run the test 2-3 times to be sure. If it picks up any error codes then you should plan on visiting an Apple Store or AASP to get it fixed and the codes interpreted. Apple does not publish what codes are interpreted as however some will give you a good idea. For example if it has HDD in it then you know the error is related to the HD however you don't know if it's the drive itself or it possible it could be fan sensor for the HD, this is why it's smart to take it in. -
IMac late 2009 gives beach ball. All test return normal.
I have an iMac late 2009 model 27 inch. update to Mavericks (10.9.1)
Returning from holiday, I found my iMac dead slow, with spinng beach balls on every click. Until now I have done ....
Create new user account, logged in as this new user.
reset PRAM / NVRAM
boot up in safe mode
boot up in recovery mode, perform disk test. (all normal)
I managed to copy the most important directories to an external storage. Got more and more read/write errors.
iMac had become unusable slow.
Made bootable USB stick, used this to boot and did a complete HD erase.
Clean installed Maverick.
Problem still persist.
Performed AHT (Apple Hardware Test) in extented mode. No error founds.
Performed Black Magic Disktest, around 110 MB/s seems normal speed.
After reboot, the first application start up fast (which gives me hope) but starting the second app, takes several minutes with this spinning beach ball.
Anyone here having simular problems or otherwise can point me to a solution? Thanks for you advise. I did a clean install, so without any third party software like Trusteer Rapport.
On you advice I ran EtreCheck. This is the result:

My install of 10.6.3 is a week old (10.6.0 was installed from scratch, then updated to 10.6.3 via the Combo Update). All of my usual programs are back and installed. The reason I reinstalled everything from scratch is that things were running a bit slow. Things are helluvalot faster now, but beach balls are randomly occurring.
I've done some basic troubleshooting, such as repair kext and disk permissions, and running some OnyX scripts. IS there anything else I could try? This is becoming quite annoying. Console doesn't reveal anything (except there are DOZENS of entries for Chromium/Chrome (such as 4/6/10 5:26:29 PM sandboxd[622] Chromium Helper(625) deny mach-lookup com.apple.pasteboard.1). I don't think it's Chromium, since this happens even after rebooting and never running Chromium.
It's not the hard drive. It was scanned for bad sectors, and there were none (unlike my old HDD, which was dying within a few months of purchase).
Any ideas? I'd hate to have to reinstall everything over AGAIN (was definitely worth it though, but I just did this a week ago and don't want to do it again for at least a few more months). From your log entries it sounds like it may be Chromium Helper. But there are other troubleshooting steps you can take.
Create a new User go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" (make it an admin acct) and test the apps in this new account, if they work the problem is isolated to your User and not systemwide.
If the issue is limited to your user account try starting up Safe Mode (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)
If your apps functions correctly that way, go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items, and remove them. Boot normally and test. If not go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving ~(yourHome)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
If the issue is systemwide then, you may be able to repair this with the The 10.6.3 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

Pages is giving me repeated beach balls in Lion. Forces a restart.
I noticed that a few moments after opening a particular Pages file, I was getting brief beachballs. Some time later, the beachballs did no cease and "proliferated" so that everywhere I clicked (even other apps), I got new beachballs. This forced me to power down the iMac. Three times in a row (I was not sure it was the file at first).
I suspect this has to do with versions corrupting the file. Anyone else seen this?To follow up . . .
I could reliably trigger the crash by invoking versions on the file in question ("Browse all versions . . .").
Then, the Spotlight database rebuilt after one more of these crashes. I also (as it happened) switched off Sophos anti-virus on-access scanning and the problem resolved (with the same file).
When I switched on-access scanning back on, the crash repeated itself. After the this crash, the Spotlight database again showed a rebuild (a dot in the middle of the agnifying glass icon) but the rebuild only took a few minutes. I switched on-access scanning back on, and the crash is gone.
Funny thing is, this conflict does not exist on my 2010 MBP or a 2006 Xeon Mac Pro with the same file and system. Only the 2010 iMac 27" has this problem.
Anyway, I think this is a problem with versions on this particular machine. Here is the console dump at the time of the last crash:
8/6/11 4:09:36.000 PM kernel: /SourceCache/AppleFSCompression/AppleFSCompression-37/Compressors/Dataless/comp ressorType5Kext.c:532: Error: post_request error for /.DocumentRevisions-V100/PerUID/503/d/com.apple.documentVersions/72B4D635-9086- 4959-ACBA-59100150C22A.pages: 35
Just posting this in case someone out there has the same issue . . .. To summarize, no problems at all as long as I keep Sophos on-access scanning off.

Constant beach balls after clean install of lion
mid 2009 17" Macbook, 2.8 core2duo, 8 gigs ram
After constant problems with my Lion upgrade I did a total clean install, even reinstalling my programs 1 by 1. Everything worked great for about two weeks and now I am back to constant problems. I can't even type this without beachballs, I can't watch a non-HD video, I can't open FCP at all; the mac completly crashes.
I can't imagine its hardware, because when I restore from time machine it works great for 2-3 days and slowly devolves to useless. What am I missing?I have tried putting the factory 4 gigs with no change. Tests show nothing with either the 8 or 4 gig set.
A search for fail in the console window, here is just 15 minutes worth, it goes on and on...

Notes is giving me the beach ball. What gives?
Notes in Maverick is acting up.
I get the beachball as soon as I try to do anything.
I turned it off, then on again in iCloud Prefs. Zip. Then I repeated it and logged off. Zip. Then I turned it off and on, again, and rebooted the computer. Zip.
Any ideas? Any extension conflicting with it? I've already uninstalled GLIMS to great effect. What happens when you try to open the Notes app?

Constant hanging, beach ball, complete system freeze...please help
I have had my MBP since the beginning of the year, about a month I started experiencing problems and took it into the Apple store where they replaced the Harddrive and Logic Board. It was fine for a while, but since instaling CS5 and upgrading to Snow Leopard my Mac appears to be dying a slow death. It has got to the point where it is completely un-usable, after a restart with no applications running, simply browsing the finder I have constant beach balls as the finder tries to load the contents of a small folder. And when actually trying to do some work, with two or three apps open...the Mac freezes for up to 30 secs before every task, no matter how simple.
All my software and firmware is up to date! This is frustrating and completely disappointing, any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
AdamBackup your data, and take it back in to service*:

Sounds like they left something loose.

Probably a relatively simple fix, or series of steps, that will return it to normal.
BD,
It's been a while, but I have since upgraded RAM to 12Gb and gone to Mavericks 10.9.4. Everything has run well until recently. Time Machine will not function on a new Seagate, 1TB GoFlex external HD,even though it was properly formatted and HFS journaled. Seagate techs said it seems to be a failing drive, yet it works perfectly on my laptop, a 15" MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion. The drive completes less than 10% of the backup before it locks everything up on the iMac with the spinning beach ball and a gray screen. Left it that way for two days and no change. Removed the drive physically and the iMac works just fine. I am baffled and really a bit frustrated here and wonder if you, or anyone else, has an idea about correcting this? I am suspecting that there is something deeper in the system going on than I am seeing.
I have run a verification of Disc Permissions/Repairs and keep getting this coming up: "Permissions differ on “Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Safari.help/Contents/Resources/inde x.html”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x ."
That keeps coming up every time and is not fixed. I don't know if that has anything to do with that.

New Macbook Pro Beach Ball Lag
Just got the laptop 2 weeks ago, and everything is updated to latest fixes and patches. One big problem I'm having is the constant beach ball showing while during simple things like opening a regular website, or chatting on adium. It will just occasionally start to occur and last for 10-20 seconds. I do not think its a heat issue since its running at 95 degrees. I originally thought it was xmarks, but I removed that. Currently I only have adium running, text expander, grabup.
Is this a known problem, or if anyone else has any suggestions?

Message was edited by: xtacI've been having the exact same problem since I got my laptop ten days ago. It's bugging the **** out of me. Every ten minutes: iTunes stops playing, beach ball of death, then just snaps back to normal as if nothing happened. I'm confident it's not the hard drive locking up because nothing like this happened on my old macbook pro, and it doesn't require any sudden movements to occur. I'm hesitant to take it to the genius bar because I can't easily recreate the scenario. I'm more than happy to provide any data from activity monitor to help the guys reading this forum that are obviously far smarter than me figure out the problem
Edit: Just happened again, took some shots immediately after

Spinning Beach Ball in Safari, relentless, despite passing hardware diagnostics
My early 2008 24" iMac gets the spinning beach ball and stalls out, I use Safari constantly so that's where I'm noticing it the most. When I reboot the computer, it initially works, then after a few minutes it starts spinning again. Sometimes my pages load, sometimes not and then I have to close Safari and open it again to get it to work.
I installed Smart Utility And Smart Reporter, checked my harddrive with those programs, it passed all the tests. I run Onyx weekly. I check my activity monitor, I have plenty of harddrive space, my CPU usage is low, I don't have a lot of open programs, but I still get the beach ball. When I access the Force Close Applications, it shows Safari not responding. Sometimes my third party MailPlane will also show that it isn't responding,
I've read everything I can think of, can't figure it out.
I do have a replacement Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 (AF) 500 GB in this computer. I replaced the original harddrive two years ago. I also have 4GB of RAM, 2 GB in each slot. I thought perhaps I was having harddrive failure again, but every test I run says my harddrive is okay.
Any help would be appreciated. When you next have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -
"beach-ball of death" after updates
My woeful story.
My macbook pro kept on giving me the beach-ball of death crash shortly after doing some updates so I ended up restoring the whole hard-drive from my time machine backup. No improvement so I tried another backup from my time machine - still no improvement.
I was convinced it was a hardware problem, however, I though I would try a fresh OSX install from the install disc just to rule out software. This fixed the problem and I spent the next 48 hours reinstalling everything manually.
Everything was going fine until last night when I ran the final mac update and installed Java 4, Safari and an HP printer update. The weird thing was that 2 separate check boxes came up for Java 4 that were exactly the same so I unchecked on of them.
Anyhow upon restart the computer was giving me the same kind of error except this time it crashed when I attempted to use any of the icons/dropdown menus in the tool bar at the top or anytime I tried to right click to use a menu. If I left these alone it would be fine.
I then downloaded the "stand alone" installers for Java and safari on my other computer. When I tried to instal them on my macbook pro I would get to the install screen but the computer would crash when I pressed the install button.
I tried re-booting in safe mode and everything seems to work fine, however, when I try to re-install the "stand-alone" updates nothing happens.
I have done everything I can think of including the usual repair permissions etc. but can't fix it.
Luckily I had backed it up on my time machine before the last update so I am attempting to reinstall again to a point that I know works okay.
Thanks for any helpStart with http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/sbbod.html

The spinning beach ball keeps rolling
Hey there!
I've got a late 2009 Macbook and since updating to OS X 10.6.5 the spinning beach ball's been a frequent problem. It's mostly when I use Safari(5.0.3 newly updated) so I tried downloading Firefox but no luck. It's like the computer has slowed down after the update and I also get the spinning beach ball in Itunes and Spotify from time to time.
I've been scanning the board for an answer and tried some of the tips you good people gave to others in need but nothing's helped.
Any suggestions?
/JohanAfter serious troubleshooting on my new MacBook with almost constant beach-balling, i realized the only time the computer works as supposed to do is WHILE SPOTLIGHT IS INDEXING. When indexing is done or if it is shut off the beach ball returns.
This is on a completely new installation of 10.6.3 on a formatted hard drive with no 3rd part soft installed. It even beach-balls on the user registration form directly after install... and the welcome-video lagged for a cpl of seconds.
This is crazy. I tried everything
Repaired permissions
Cleared caches
Checked hard drive SMART Status
Reinstalled osx twice
turned off journaling
disabled spotlight
disabled the motion sensor
There, now the indexing is done and in this sentence i got 2 beach balls...
Come on apple! (2 beach balls in this sentence) -
Since a clean install of Leopard on a dual 2.0 Ghz G5,
I've been experiencing frequent beach balls of 10-15 seconds.
It happens when running Final Cut (pressing play on a clip),
when searching in Firefox (Command - F), and when doing tab
completion in a terminal window.
A 100% repro:
- open terminal window
- type cd D <TAB>
In normal bash behaviour, this would immediately ring the bell, because there are two directories ~/Documents and ~/Desktop.
In Leopard, this freezes the terminal, giving me a beach ball after 5 seconds that lasts for about 10 seconds. Then I get the bell.
Anyone else getting this? It's very annoying.holy crap i removed all the windows truetype and font fork (eh?) files from my system and fontbook now loads.
i had a feeling it was font related, but things are looking up...
will post more findings...
