Older Mac Pro users beware of Mountain Lion upgrade

I work at a company where we have 6 edit suites. Five of those suites are still running Mac Pros; three of them are Early 2008 models, two are Early 2009 models. All of these suites have 30" monitors in them running at 2560 x 1600 resolution. The other suite has a new 27" iMac. All but one of the Mac Pros have their original graphics cards.
When Mountain Lion first came out, I upgraded my Mac mini at home that has FCP7 and FCPX installed on it. Both applications ran fine and I was able to edit a project in FCPX with no problem. A co-worker who works remotely on a 27" iMac had also upgraded his machine and experienced no issues.
Seeing no issues with the ability to run FCP7 under Mountain Lion, I proceeded with upgrading the MacPro suites at our office. After an initial test on one machine to confirm that FCP7 would load and launch projects, I proceeded to upgrade the remaining suites. It soon became apparent after other editors began to use their computers that FCP6 and 7 were affected by the upgrade to Mountain Lion.
While the programs still work fine, one fundamental change that Apple has made in Mountain Lion is to push more of the responsibility for displaying the image on the computer monitor to the GPU of the graphics card. Previously these responsibilities were shared with the CPU. Therefore, if you have an older graphics card (even if it is fully compatible with FCPX, as ours are), FCP6/7 has a difficult time playing back 1080 video in the Canvas window (at any size), without breaking up when there is some degree of movement in the video image. The screen cannot refresh quickly enough to draw the video image without showing horizontal banding and some minor digital garbage.
Rest assured that the render files are clean and the output file will be fine. Once exported, a self-contained .mov file will playback fine in Quicktime, showing no banding where there previously was banding when viewed in FCP. This is an issue with display only. If you can live with it, fine. But it is rather distracting while editing.
I attempted to downgrade one of the Mac Pros to Lion earlier today. While I was able to successfully downgrade (not with a clean install, but another method), both FCP7 and FCPX would no longer launch because they were confused about which version of the OS was running. Using FCS Remover, I deleted both FCP7 and X, then reinstalled FCP7. Still no luck with launching FCP7. I finally decided to reinstall Mountain Lion for the time-being. FCP7 now launches again.
Just a warning to those considering upgrading that you may experience performance issues with FCP6/7 if you are using an older Mac Pro and trying to edit 1080 footage. You may have to upgrade your graphics card to achieve best performance.

Yes, we previously we had purchased an ATI Radeon 5770 to enable use of FCPX, and 1080 video plays fine through that in both Early 2008 and Early 2009 models, although it is not fully compatible with those computers. Technically it is only compatible with Mid 2010 Mac Pros. It is unclear if there is a card that is fully compatible with Early 2008 computers and FCPX at this point.
We have noticed some small pixelation around the edges of icons with the 5770 in an Early 2008, but that is intermittent and goes away with a restart. We have not noticed any issues in the Early 2009. We have also just purchased a Radeon 5870 and will be testing that in Early 2008 models to see if the same pixelation issue happens. We will install that card eventually in an Early 2009 computer because it is fully compatible with that machine.
If nothing else, hopefully these graphics cards buy us a couple more years with our Mac Pros.
Can you explain a little more about this please...  My primary system is a 2008 8X 3.2GHz system with a ATI Radeon 5770 and I have it running two 27" Samsung monitors and a 37" HDTV (all 1080p) on FCS3. None of the displays have any artifacts under any conditions. What are the compatibility issues? If I'm doing a no-no, I want to know before my next big project...

  • Is it possible to upgrade an older Mac Pro to accept OSX Mountain Lion?

I know mine would need another gig of memory, but would that do it?

Pre 2008 Mac Pro (65lb tower) models lack the required EFI-64 firmawre for 10.8 Mountain Lion.
And the minimum RAM means it runs, but not well.

  • Mac pro not sleeping since mountain lion upgrade from Lion

Hi, just wondering if anybody was having problems with their mac not sleeping after upgrading to Mountain Lion. The screen no longer blanks either, screensaver just runs until I move the mouse etc. all was fine under Lion, tried various things, stopping program's etc to no avail. I can force sleep manually just not happening when set to in energy saver settings. Machine is a mid 2010 mac pro, would of thought it shouldn't of have any issues running ML! Odd how the screen power down isn't working either. I'm out of ideas, must be a bug of some sort.

Problem turned out to be a sidewinder USB joystick. Once unplug sleep resumed as scheduled.

my mac pro will not accept mountain lion how do i access older os

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and check the processor.
If it's a Core Duo, it can only be upgraded to 10.6.8; Mac OS X 10.6 DVDs are available in the online Apple Store.
If it's a Core 2 Duo, follow the instructions for the Core Duo, phone the online Apple Store, and order a download code for Lion 10.7.

  • Mac Pro (2008) Kernel Panic Mountain Lion

Hello everyone, if anyone could help it be great. Okay so i have a Mac Pro 3,1 (2008) that im trying to hang on too because it runs great otherwise then these pesky kernal panics i get every couple of weeks or some times every couple of days or so. It is upgraded to everyting i can think of and im hoping i can keep it for another few years before apple drops support for it . Okay so has a PCIe SSD card from mac sales (also the boot drive) in it and i did recently install a driver they relesed, but i cant rember if i was haveing this problem before or not... Dang. But it also has 3 harddrives raided togeather using apple software raid im guessing it has somting to with one of the two because in the kernal pacnic report it says dependency: com.apple.driver.DiskImages is in its backtrace and from my knowledge that means it was from that extention?? .. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help that is offered!

  • Is there an automated way to check if my MAC Pro is compatible with Mountain Lion?

I am trying to upgrade my OS to Mauntain Lion after reading all of the requirements, but when i click on purchase, it is telling me that my system is not compatible. Is there a way to automatically confirm compatibility?

    barriorecords wrote:
... Is there a way to automatically confirm compatibility?
It seems you already did that but to verify the App Store's diagnosis is actually correct, type in your Mac Pro's serial number here: https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
To find its serial number: Mac Pro: How to find the serial number
You can copy the serial number from About This Mac > More Info... and paste it in the above page's serial number field. Mountain Lion requires an early 2008 or newer Mac Pro. That would be a MacPro3,1 or later.

  • Will my Mac Pro 2,1 run Mountain Lion?

I have read that the Mac Pro 2,1  would not run Mountain lion because of EFI32 in the graphics.  If THAT part of the machine is upgraded, COULD it run X.8?

The "EFI64" or Unified EFI 2.x, was never final or adopted until late 2007, found its way into the Early 2008 Mac Pro.
The MacPro 1,1 actually existed, in engineering and such, with its EFI32, all the way back in June 2005, a year before we saw it. 2,1 added support for new processors was all.
64-bit processors, yes. Just think how the G5 folks who thought they had 64-bit systems, only not all the registers, not all the factors from top to bottom to be 64-bit.
I run 64-bit OS and drivers on EFI32 just not Mountain Lion. But my graphic card options have been one area where might matter. And 64-bit graphics is where Apple wants to go. Probably not 100% technical but some.
It does more than it did. 12GB kit (6x2GB) is now only $160. I paid that for a single 512MB DIMM in Sept 2006 ($320 the pair).
Apple supported (oddly) 64-bit Vista on MacBook in Early 2008, then dropped support in late 2008. The iMac did not get such "blessed to run Vista 64-bit" until later, 2009, even though they had Penryn 64-bit class processors in iMac already. None of it 'makes sense.' MacBook, MacBook Pro, iMac.

  • So my 8core 2007 'FutureProof' Mac Pro won't run Mountain Lion - any work arounds?

Can it really be true that it's the end of the OS upgrading line for my 2007 MacPro?
Surely someone out there knows a way to get around this? After holding out for Mountain Lion
while switching from MobileMe to iCould in the 'knowledge' that it wasn't necessary to get Lion first, I thought I
could survive a few weeks!... Just to be disappointed!?! Please say it isn't so!...

If you google you will find a step by guide. It's not the easiest process in the world but seems doable. Good luck

  • SSD users problems post Mountain Lion upgrade?

HI folks.  I've had nothing but major problems with installing and booting since I upgraded my Mac to Mountain Lion.  I had no problems with Lion.  I do have an SSD installed and I'm wondering if that has something to do with it.  Anyone?  Thanks.

    Hello All...
I just wanted to give you my expeience with my SSD.  Im hoping this helps someone out there.
    I have a macbookpro5,4 - mid 2009 2.53 GHZ 15" macbook pro running lion.  I purchased a 512 SSD from crucial and 2 x 4 GB ram modules.
I installed both and all worked great (I used a time machine backup to restore the SSD), up to the point where I put the computer to sleep either by closing the lid, via the power button, or via the apple menu.  When I tried to log in  from sleep it would give me the beach ball and it wouldnt go away.
    So heres what I did:
    1. I put my old hard drive in and everything worked fine but not as fast as ssd
    2. I put the SSD back in and the sleep issue came back
    3. Upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion (issue still there)
    4. I downgraded the firmware to 1.6 (issue still came back)
    5. Upgraded firmware back to 1.7 (issue still there)
    6. Disabled "put hard drive to sleep when possible)  (System Preferences -> Energy Saver) - (issue still there - though i kept this disabled)
    7. Disabled "allow bluetooth to wake up this computer" (System Preferences -> Energy Saver -> Advanced) - (issue still there) - I renabled it after
    8. Saw a post to replace the hard drive cable bracket Apple part: 922-9314 (i purchased on ebay)
    9. Found a program called insominaX - enables you to prevent your computer from going to sleep by closing the lid.  THIS WORKED for me as a bypass solution but not as a real solution as the computer is still on when i travelled from one location to the next.
I emailed crucial and now i was contemplating wiping out the hard drive and starting from scratch and reinstalling everything.
And the final solution (for me anyways):
    10. I Reset the SMC - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964.  And everything worked.
I went back to disable the insomniaX and everything still worked.  I did a sleep via apple, closing lid, and power button.  And still all good.
    11. I requested a refund for the hard drive cable bracket.  And the seller just refunded for me.
Best of luck to everyone out there...I hope you dont have to spend as much time as myself to solve this issue.

  • Why is my MacBook Pro running hot after mountain lion upgrade?

The fan is on high all the time and the system is running very hot. It also consumes the battery way faster than it used to.

Thanks for your links.  My MacBook fan was running constantly from switch on and the underside was getting very hot.  Using your first link, I followed the Activity Monitor instructions and found that Dashboard was using '117%'.  As soon as I closed it down the fan instantly slowed and after only a few seconds switched off..
    Thanks again..

  • Numbers does not open with the main user after installing mountain lion. It works flawlessly when I use the second account on my mac. What got corrupted in the admin-account, something in the user-library? How can I fix it? I´m kinda desperate...

Numbers does not open with the main user after installing mountain lion. It works flawlessly when I use the second account on my mac. What got corrupted in the admin-account, something in the user-library? How can I fix it? I´m kinda desperate... (the same happens with the other iWork-Apps!)
Looking forward to hearing from somebody with a littlemore expertise than me, Chris

you can remove preferences files by navigating to the Preferences folder for your user as follows:
    0) Quit ALL iWork apps (Keynote, Pages and Numbers)
    1) from the Finder select the menu item "Go > Go To Folder…".  This will bring up a dialog:
    2) enter the path "~/Library/Preferences" (no double quotes)
    3) find the files:
    com.apple.iWork.Keynote.plist
    com.apple.iWork.Numbers.plist
    com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist
and move these to the trash.  I would NOT empty until later.
    4) restart Numbers
