Older MacPro or new imac?

Hi, I need a mac for use with adobe creative cloud (Mostly photoshop and illustrator). I have 2 options 1) a reconditioned Mac Pro 3.1 with 2x Xeon 2.8Ghz procs, 6Gb RAM, updated OS, 1TB HDD or 2) a new 21.5" imac (i5 2.7Ghz 8Gb RAM). Which is best?

check out www.macperformanceguide.com for ideas, he has a lot esp. about CS6 and above.
24-32GB RAM
Large and / or multiple SSDs for system, scratch, graphic catalogues (Aperture, Lightroom, iPhoto).
You can do well with a 2009 instead, or a maxed out iMac and Thunderbolt external storage.
I would skip the 2008. Too many quirks and behavioral issues possible for some, esp. used but any of 'em.
8 cores doesn't help CS6/CC but 4 of fastest processor cores does.

  • Migration Assistant from MacPro to new iMac

Just received my new iMac with OS 10.9.  My old computer is a MacPro purchased late 2008 using OS 10.6.8.  What is best way to transfer everything to the new iMAC?  The Mac Pro has USB2, Firewire 400/800 & Gigabit Ethernet.  The new iMac has Thunderbolt, USB3 & Gigabit Ethernet.  I have a Thunderbolt to FW800 adapter so can I use that connection for Mirgration Assistant or should I use the Gigabit Ethernet connection.  Just concerned my cable for the Ethernet connection is not current.  Also concerned that don't have same problem as couple years ago when did the Mirgation Assistant from an older iMAC to a new iMAC for my wife.  Some files didn't transfer and also Permissions were totally messesd up as later when tried to recover a file from Time Machine I kept getting message that "did not have permission".  Thanks to Apple Support I finally found a solution for recovering the file.  Haven't turned on the new iMAC yet as want to make sure I do the migration assistant right - No thanks to the manuals Apple now includes with new iMacs.    Thank You for your help.

I got everything transferred to the new iMAC following Pondini's article Setup Assistant tips  mentioned above by rkaufmann87.  Thank You.  Went to the section  "Problems after using Migration Assistant" and sub section "Fixing a UID mismatch after using Migration Assistant".  Generated temp user accts, logged off all accounts and then logged on the Temp Admin user acct and deleted all other user accts.  Then restarted iMAC and did the update from Time Machine disk from older MacPro.  Then logged off the Temp Admin acct and on to the account transferred over from the MacPro.   Best read the article to get all the details.  Then had to change names etc. to make them different from the old MacPro.  Still trying to get that straightened out.  As far as I know Permissions are OK.
Now the iMAC power on is VERY SLOW.  Takes 3 min 20 sec to start up, even with all external devices disconnected.  Also having other compatibility problems.

  • Exporting mailboxes from older emac to new imac

How do I transfer the many mailboxes I have set up to sort my email in mail from an old emac to a new imac. I currently connect using earthlink and when I opened the email in the new Imac the inbox came over, but none of my downloaded mailboxes or older emails came. Where does the emac store these files?
emac and imac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

An Earthlink account is a POP account so messages available in the account's Inbox at the server will be downloaded only when creating the email account with Mail or another email client such as Mail on another computer.
User created "On My Mac" location mailboxes created in Mail are stored locally on the hard drive and although you used these many mailboxes created in Mail on your old eMac to sort/store messages received by your Earthlink account, these mailboxes have no association with the account at the incoming mail server level for Earthlink so will not be automatically created when creating your Earthlink account in Mail on your new Mac.
Since you did not use the Migration Assistant, you need to use the Import Mailboxes feature in Mail on your new Mac to import these user created mailboxes from Mail on your old Mac. All imported mailboxes will be placed in an Import folder that is created automatically by Mail and this process will not create these "On My Mac" location mailboxes that you created on your old Mac.

  • Importing iTunes Library from Older iBook to New iMac

My old iBook (700 MHz G3) had a severe hard drive failure, but I did manage to transfer via firewire the entire MUSIC folder and the entire PICTURES folder, as well other data I needed.
The question remains: How do I import the iTunes Library from the older iBook into the new iMac iTunes Library? As far as I can tell, I have to do it song by song. That can't be right.
    Any ideas?

If you copied your entire itunes folder from your old mac you can copy it to your new mac. The key is the library (xml) file.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93732
You need the library (xml) file also. When you open iTunes you might have to tell it where the xml file is.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304447
I used the same process to transfer the music library from my old mac to my new one.
    Hope this helps.

  • Macpro VS new imac graphic card

    hi,
please can anyone help with this:
on apple macpro page, under graphics i see a benchmark based on quake 4 of the nvidia GeForce 7300 GT(256MB of GDDR2 SDRAM), it results 35fps.
The same graphic card NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT on the new imac core 2 duo page, gives 47.
The Doom 3 bench is 44fps on the macpro and 76 fps on the new imac.
I'm not a player at all, but i'm going to order a macpro,
and i'd really like to know why the same card works better on the new imac core2 duo.
    Thanks

I hope we can get some clarification on these graphical benchmarks because if these are true it makes my 2ghz Mac Pro obsolete before it's even started!
If you look at the sub-notes for the Doom 3/Quake 4 graphics test you'll note that for the iMac, the configuration nor resolution details are listed where they are for the Mac Pro. It's quite possible that Apple did these test differently. And, differently so on the Mac Pro to give the biggest difference to the ATi X1900XT and the Nvidia Quadro FX4500. Again, they way they did it on the iMac probably played into the strengths of the Nvidia 7300GT over the ATi X1600.
Personally, I find the number in tests like this dubious at best as you can make them say practically anything you like.
I'm also wondering if the new imacs processors will be faster than my 2Ghz Mac Pro?
For some application the difference may not be a lot. Although, for applications that will utilise the additional processor and double the bus speed it won't be even close.
Additionally, the difference start to appear when you look closely…
    - Single processor
    - Half the per processor frontside bus speed
    - 3GB RAM Maximum which requires a hugely expensive 2GB DIMM
    - No ATi X1900XT or Nvidia Quadro FX4500 options
    - Maximum DVI support of 1920 x 1200 (23" display)
    - Single external monitor support with only a mini-DVI connetor
    - No PCI Express slot (for stuff like eSATA)
    - Single hard drive as opposed to 4 and potentially 5 (also means no RAID and no Raptors)
    - Single Ethernet and no jumbo frames
    - Single FireWire 400/800 with limited poer support vs 2 ports each with full power support
    - 2 USB2 ports vs 5 port
    - 2.4x DVD+R DL write speed vs 6x
    - No TOSlink audio
    Shall I go on?

  • Older files on new iMac

I have an early G5 PowerMac that does not have the Intel chip.  OS 10.4.11. Works also on Classic OS.  I am thinking of upgrading.  I have many Microsoft 2000 Word and Pages files.  Will these files operate on a new iMac with the Intel chip?

Use this article to determine what applications you need to upgrade:
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Office can be upgraded to Neo Office or OpenOffice for very little money compared to iWork or Microsoft Office. Appleworks has to be exported to Word, Excel, or dBase before any program will open it on an Intel Mac.  The one exception is if you have the crossplatform Appleworks for Mac/Windows CD.  In that event, you can install Windows on your new Mac, and install Appleworks on that.  If you are talking Microsoft Works, the now defunct Dataviz Maclinkplus can convert those to Word before before you move to an Intel Mac.  iWork can export to Microsoft Word and Excel as well before upgrading to Intel Macs.

  • Older Scanner with newer iMac?

I had an iMac G3 w/ OS 8.6. My wife bought me a scanner but it only worked with OS 9. When I upgraded to an iMac G5 OS 10.4 the scanner still won't work.(guess I jumped a generation) The company that makes the scanner (Mustek) doesn't make drivers for OS10. Any workaround or should I just move into the modern age and buy a new scanner...

Sorry, there is no work-a-round. If the manufacturer does not make any drivers for Tiger then you will have no alternative but to purchase a scanner that is compatible w/your current OS system & hopefully beyond.

  • Connecting "older" pc and new iMac desktop via Airport extreme

Please bear with me...I am a Mac novice. My husband and I just purchased our first mac (iMac 20" desktop)and had it up and running in 2 minutes. We got internet access immediately through the bluetooth (whose signal it is remains a mystery). We purchased the airport extreme to access the internet via our Dell's 2 y/o cable modem (comcast Motorola Surfboard)before we realized we had a hotspot in our house. We also want to use the printer that is connected to our pc with our mac. I cannot get the airport configured at all...I keep getting error messages. The first one that appears says that my wireless interface is not enabled. I went to My Network Places and set up the wirless network using a USB flash drive. I connected it to the airport's USB connection, and then to my iMac. Neither one appeared in the list of devices detected when I reconnected the flashdrive to my pc. I've tried rebooting, disconnecting and then reconnecting both the modem and the aiport from the power supply. Should I reset the airport? Help!!
    iMac 20" desktop   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

We got internet access immediately through the bluetooth
(whose signal it is remains a mystery).
This is very likely to be a neighbour's wireless or Airport network (not Bluetooth).
    I cannot get the
airport configured at all...I keep getting error
    messages.
Don't use the PC to configure the Airport Extreme Base Station, use the iMac, it will be easier.
The first one that appears says that my
    wireless interface is not enabled.
You are probably trying to use the Airport Assistant, this will only work on a wireless computer, in order to configure an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) from a wired PC, you need to connect to the AEBS via the LAN port and then use the Airport Admin Utility.
Connecting a XP PC to a Airport Network via the LAN port of the AEBS
    http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1007.html
However still configure the AEBS via the iMac.
    I went to My
Network Places and set up the wirless network using a
USB flash drive. I connected it to the airport's
USB connection, and then to my iMac. Neither one
appeared in the list of devices detected when I
reconnected the flashdrive to my pc.
That Microsoft wireless process only works with other Windows PCs, it won't work with a Mac or the AEBS.
    I've tried
rebooting, disconnecting and then reconnecting both
the modem and the aiport from the power supply.
Try using the Mac to configure the Airport network using the Assistant.
    Should I reset the airport?
You may need to, but sounds like you haven't managed to configure it, so it will still be in the default state.
We also want to use the printer that is
connected to our pc with our mac.

  • How do I share a hard drive with the new iMac to load a disk from macbook pro

How do I share a hard drive with the new iMac to load a disk from macbook pro. I want to install office for Mac from a disk but dont know how to share har drive from macpro
    thanks

The new iMac's don' t have DVD drives however almost all have a disk drive. The easiest method of installing MS Office for Mac on your new iMac is to download it from Microsoft and then input the code you received when you purchased your original license. Otherwise you can use the DVD drive on your MBP to install on your iMac, that feature is called Remote Disc. Instructions for Remote Disc can be found at:http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5287

  • Two imacs--one older, one brand new--plus an external hard-drive

Hello, i was just thinking and was wondering if anybody could put their two cents in for me. I have an older imac (just over a year and a half--if one can call it 'old') and i have intentions of buying the new imac but i am waiting until Novemberish so that Leopard OS comes pre installed on it. I also want to buy Leopard OS for my existing imac.
BTW, I don't do any gaming on it (my xbox360 is for gaming) or anything like that....only a huge library of itunes and photos(&the occasional video), surfing the net, and mail are the things i require my computer for...I need another imac because my family members are hogging time on 'my' imac.
I was thinking of buying an external HD and putting everything on it (transferring data)that is now on my imac and just leaving it always hooked up to my imac and placing it at the base of the computer(you know, ...the base stand of the imac that is just great for placing one's ipod and so on...). Then when ever i want i can just unhook the HD and hook it up to my new imac. I just have this thing about having too much data on the HD of my imac and i worry about bogging down/diminished efficency of the computer.
I have never being truly networked with another computer ..... you know, tapping into another computer at another location of the house .... BTW, I currently have a wireless Dell router that my imac easily recgonizes. Is buying an external HD for each iMAc a waste of money?

    A few suggestions
When you first get a new Mac, the initial boot will ask you if you have an old Mac you wish to transfer data from. This migration assistant works wonderfully well. All that is needed is a FireWire cable and follow the on screen instructions. Transfer time may take a few hours depending on how much data you have. You can choose how much data to transfer, i.e. documents, music, photos, applications, personal settings, etc.
I would recommend getting a large capacity external HD. One of Leopard's new features includes Time Machine and will work best if you have an external HD. An option to consider would be to get the new Airport Extreme Base Station. It has a USB port and you can hook up a USB HD to it and have all your computers on your network access the HD. I currently have all my music and videos saved on my network HD and it works flawlessly.

  • How do I connect an older imac to my new imac to use as a second monitor?

    Hi !
I was wondering if it were possible to  connect an older imac to my new imac to use as a second monitor?
My older imac is from 2006. The new one is a 2012 imac.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    JC

    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4469
Look this article over, the key is to connect either mini display port or thunderbolt and using CMD+F2, let me know if this helps or if it doesn't work out. I'll find another solution if this doesn't work Joel ^_^

  • Older iMac hard drive in enclosure won't boot long to new iMac?

I have just received my new iMac i7 with the THIN case.....it is pretty awesome! I removed the hard drive from my previous iMac (2006 Intel core 2 duo) and put it into an enclosure hoping to retreive my old files. Here is the problem.....the old hard drive (250GB) will not stay booted long enough to transfer my files. The enclosure is a Sabrent 3.5" SATA hard drive USB 3.0 enclosure. It will appear for approx. 20-30 seconds, and then the message:
"The disk was not ejected properly. If possible, always eject a disk before unplugging it or turning it off. To eject a disk, select it in the Finder and choose File > Eject. The next time you connect the disk, Mac OS X will attempt to repair any damage to the information on the disk."
It will disappear from the desktop and I am unable to access it any longer. I am able to open the older hard drive and can open older folders, etc. while it is mounted on the desktop.
A little background on the older iMac.....it quit working completely, would not turn on, no fan noise, no hard drive spinning, NOTHING. I ordered a replacement power supply and installed it......but still nothing. I can only assume the logic board is dead. Since it was what the genious at the Apple store called "vintage", we deicided to upgrade, hence the new iMac. (And it was 7 years old after all!!)
What can I do to get the info I need from the older hard drive? Like I said, it's 7 years old and has a LOT of info. I WAS able to backup pictures, music, and some misc. work to an external hard drive before it died....but I need the "little" things like my address book, calendar, old emails, bookmarks, etc.
Thanks in advance for any help in this matter!

If this is an enclosure that is USB powered that may be the problem. Mac are notorious for not putting out enough power from the USB port to properly power these USB powered drives. I suggest you get a SATA to USB Adapter that has it own AC power supply to power the drive.

  • Use older 2008 iMac as second monitor for new iMac

    Hi all,
I have one of these older machines that has no real purpose
      http://support.apple.com/kb/sp485
but would serve me very well as a second monitor for my brand spanking new iMac.
The specs seem to note that there is a video output - but I'm not seeing anything about video IN.
Is it possible to use this older iMac as a monitor?

that looks cool, and there is a free trial.
I am not keen on using the WiFi to do this - my old iMac has firewire but the new one doesn't.
Besides using the ludicrously expensive Thunderbolt <-> Firewire 800 convertor
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MD464ZM/A/thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapter
is there any other way to create a wired connection between these devices? I'm not sure if there is such a thing as a USB <-> USB network connection.
