Older MB (Core Duo [not '2']) Time Machine restore issues
The hard drive in a family-member's MacBook died and I'm trying to find the path to restoration. Regular Time Machine backups were made right up to the point of failure. I've installed a "new" drive in the MacBook (an Apple-sourced drive which formerly lived in a Mac Mini) and attempted to use the utility functions on the Snow Leopard install disk but have had no luck.
Note that this is a "Core Duo" MacBook. Not a "Core 2 Duo" machine. It cannot run Lion due to the hardware limitations enforced by Apple.
The MacBook had been updated to the latest versions of software on a regular basis. I think that the O/S version may have reached the point where the TIme Machine backups are in the "new" format where the Snow Leopard disk utilities cannot be used to restore the backup and only the Lion utilities work. (I just went through this with my MB Air.)
I have tried using a Lion install disk to run the restore but receive the "No Entry"/"Banned" symbol at boot. This makes sense as the MB is beneath the minimum hardware requirements for Lion.
When I first tried the old Mini drive in the MacBook, it booted up just fine to the Mini's condition 3 years ago. Surprising and encouraging.
I then booted from the Snow Leopard DVD and ran the Time Machine restore utility to restore the most recent backup to the newly-installed HD. All seemed to go well. The restore completed but on restart, the system hung in the gray-screen/apple-logo/spinning-gear in perpetuity. I tried restoring the second and third eldest backups with the same result.
In order to verify the health of the HD, I used the Snow Leopard disk to erase the drive. Then I installed a fresh copy of Snow Leopard. And then I patched it up to current standards.
So. Now I have a squeaky-clean new install of Snow Leopard on a MacBook (Core Duo, which cannot run Lion), a dated Snow Leopard installation DVD in hand, a solid series of dutifully-recorded Time Machine backups on a Time Capsule, and no freaking clue of where to go from here.
Everything I've read online seems to be based on the assumptions that I can a) use the older utilities on the Snow Leopard disk to install Time Machine backups made under a version of Snow Leopard compatible with the disk utility, or b) I can boot up using Lion installation media (USB or DVD pulled from the DMG in the downloaded Lion app-store installation app) and restore the "late model" Time Machine backup to the hard drive.
Has Apple just f'd me over? This computer is used by my college-student child and I would appreciate any suggestions.
A bit about me: I'm an IT professional -- a DBA -- who is by no means a Mac expert. After years of Windows machines, I returned to the Mac fold 4 years ago after a 14-year absence.
I could really use a good piece of solid advice at this point.
Thanks,
- Eric
It sounds like it's working perfectly. With Fusion I don't believe it is backed up, I know for sure Windows isn't. You may want to contact Pondini to ask about Fusion. As for your Adobe apps you can thank Adobe for that, you will need to re-install the apps, I believe this is one way Adobe ensures users aren't violating their licensing. I believe you will need to manually install the Adobe apps which shouldn't be a big deal as long as you have licensed software. Your data should have come over smoothly and frankly that's the most critical part. Reinstalling some apps should not be a problem.
I'd recommend looking over Pondini Time Machine Tips and if need be contacting Pondini directly (he has a contact section on the page) he has a lot of experience with TM and as you have already seen migrating Macs. He can provide much more information than me.

Hi, I recently started having some major operating system problems after installing the latest security update for OS 10.5.8 on my PowerMac G5. Im fairly certain that the download file was corrupted in some way because my substandard-expensive-archaic system that gives itself the undeserved title of "Internet Service" often loses bits of downloads and is generally very unreliable. Needless to say I decided to do a complete time machine restore. Thinking it was going to be as easy as it has been when Ive done it on other macs, I decided this was better than trying to fix the system issues (Which involved a repeated "There is no point for line" error about 45,000 times a day in the console logs, about which i could find no information). Anyway, I booted from my OS X dic and loaded time machine, selected my backup, and selected my destination drive and away we go! After about 2 and a half hours (which is to be expected with over 1,000,000 files totaling over 900GB of data) the restore finished....or so I thought. The screen said Restore Process Complete and the Progress bar cleared out but the restart button at the bottom of the window never showed up like it should. All I got was the spinning beach ball. So, thinking that the data had copied over and it should all be there anyway, I decided to force restart after waiting for about 2 hours for any progress. Upon restart I found that the newly restored drive was not bootable. Using Disk Utility on my OS X DVD I found that all the files were copied. So I tried it again, erasing the drive completely and then restoring from a backup with a slightly different time, and I got the same results. Any help would be awesome and ill be checking back to answer any questions about what info I may not have covered. Thanks!
PS: I looked around for a similar posting but all the ones I found were involving hangs during the restore process (IE: 64%) and I didn't see anything quite like this, so if this issue has already been discussed then sorry for the double post.It sounds like something in your installation of OSX was corrupted, and got backed-up. So when you restore, you're restoring the problem.
Your best bet is probably to do an +Erase and Install+ of Leopard, then use +Setup Assistant+ when your Mac restarts to transfer all your users, data, apps, and settings from the backups. See #19 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Then download and install the "combo" update, to get back to 10.5.8. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards. -
Time Machine Restore Issues - Apps Unexpectedly Quitting
I have a 2009 iMac 21.5" 3.06 Ghz 8GB of RAM using 10.6.8
Recently my original Seagate Hard Drive started to fail (S.M.A.R.T. status: Failing). Luckily I caught it in time, had time machine back ups, and bought and installed new Hard Drive (WD WD1002FAEX) and restored my installation to the last Time Machine backup. (Dealing with the fan speed and noice, but that is a seperate issue)
Everything seems to have worked fine, but I am experiencing issues with Mail, Dashboard and Software Update unexpectedly quitting, when I use them.
Mail opened and imported all my mailboxes and info properly (it appears) but when I click on an email to view it, it quits giving me a crash report.
I have verified and repaired permissions and reset PRAM.
What else could I do to fix this issue?
Thanks,
RyanHere is the Crash Report I get if that helps:

Time Machine restore issue - 'connect to remote disk' greyed out
I'm having trouble restoring my MacBook Pro from a time machine backup on a Buffalo network drive.
I boot up my MacBook Pro from the original Mac OS X Install DVD that came with the machine. Using the Disk Utility the MBP hard drive has been re-formatted. I then select 'restore' from a time machine back up copy from the utilities menu. However, as soon as I get to the screen 'searching for time machine backups' I cannot proceed any further as the 'connect to remote disk' button is greyed out so I cannot select the network drive.
I have restored the machine several times before from the network drive and its always worked fine. I just cannot figure out at all what is going wrong this time and why the 'connect to remote disk' button is greyed out. Nothing has changed from a previous restore I performed a week or so ago. The network drive is up and running fine (not that that is particularly relevant as I can't even get to the stage of actually searching for the network drive).
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. It sounds like something in your installation of OSX was corrupted, and got backed-up.
I'm trying to recover some lost photos in Aperture. I'm trying to restore Aperture Library from time machine and I'm getting this error. "
The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “Aperture Library” can’t be read or written.
(Error code -36)" I've already lost all my photos and had corruption issues with Aperture. I installed a previous version of the application but opened Aperture blank with no pics. My last backup on Dec. 30.Now I can't restore my computer from previous time machine backups. I keep getting error messages 2/3rds of the way through and I'm prompted to restart. Any ideas?

MacBook Pro Not Accepting Time Machine Restore
I'm officially stumped. Let me explain...
In preparation for upgrading OS 10.9.5 to Yosemite, I completed a full backup of my MacBook Pro, purchased in August 2010. The following morning, (I'd not yet upgraded to Yosemite), I noticed that the Drive Pulse monitor for Drive Genius was red. I checked the log and it said there was a volume consistency error with Mac HD. I ran Disk Utility and verified the disk - it said there was an issue (don't remember what) and to boot into the recovery partition and repair the disk. I did so and the drive could not be repaired, so it told me to format it. Good thing I'd just backed up last night, right?
I formatted the drive and then from within the recovery partition, went to restore the drive from the backup. It said there was an error and the backup couldn't be restored. I tried restoring the previous backup - same issue. Ok, so I then tried to reinstall the OS from the recovery partition. It wanted to install 10.8, which the App Store said was not available. I then created a bootable USB drive with Mavericks on it. The OS installed just fine and within the OS setup, I selected to restore my backup from the previous evening. The system went through the whole process of restoring the backup, only when the system restarted, nothing was there. Hmm... I tried using Migration Assistant, same problem. I then made a bootable USB drive of Yosemite, which installed just fine. Tried restoring the backup both during the OS install and using Migration Assistant - no luck.
I took the MBP to the Apple Store today. They first ran a diagnostic on the hard drive - it passed. They then reformatted the entire drive, which included wiping out the recovery partition. As part of the format, they first formatted using the Apple partition table and then re-did the format using GUID. Next up they re-installed the base OS that came with the system, which was 10.6. The OS installed fine, but 10.6 couldn't be upgraded to 10.9.5, so they did a restore using 10.9.5. They then told me to try the restore again when I got home, which I did. No luck. Apple Store also said if things don't work, come back with the MBP and the Time Capsule since they can manually pull data out of a backup and put it back on the system.
Two additional pieces of info to mention. When I log into my Time Capsule (I have the 3TB version), the backup for this MBP is there. I can open it, navigate through it, etc. Second piece of info is I just successfully restored a backup of my girlfriend's MBP onto my MBP. I'm currently trying again to restore my backup, but does anyone know what's going on or have any suggestions? There is definitely nothing in the drive - and I very rarely use it...

I currently have OSX 10.4.11 and need to upgrade my software. I do not have Time Machine yet. My processor is an intel Core 2 duo. Do I have to upgrade to snow leopard 10.6.8 before upgrading to Mavericks?
Assuming your computer has the minimum system requirements yes, upgrade to 10.6.8 and then open the Mac App Store and upgrade to Mavericks. You can only get SL 10.6.x from Apple's online store, it is $20. Prior to upgrading to 10.6.x get an external HD and use a utility such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper and make a bootable clone of your system to safeguard all of your valuable data. In the event you have a problem the backup will be invaluable!!!!!
Considering your computer is at best a 2007 iMac I would STRONGLY recommend upgrading your RAM to 6GB, the maximum a 2007 machine can accommodate. You can buy this from either Crucial or OWC (www.macsales.com).
Another option is due to the age of your computer is considering buying a newer machine. -
On my Mac Pro, early 2008 2 x 2.8GHz Quad Core 10.7.5, replaced 4 x 500ghds with 4 x 3Tb. The Raid card Raid 5ed them OK but can not load time machine back up as it does not see any of the 4 drives, neither does disc utilities, any thoughts?
You don't see drives when using a hardware RAID only the volumes.
WD Green are not suitable for hardware RAID (or software RAID for that matter).
USB2 and TimeMachine are a disaster waiting to happen. I've used SATA (internal) and eSATA (using SATA PCIe cards) trouble-free.
I can't say I begin to understand your use or "choosing the install drive for the backup"
Install what?
You don't load TimeMachine. Maybe seems minor but that is not how to describe the behavior of software.

Lion OS to ever support the older Intel Core Duo processors?
Does Apple Lion OS have any intention of supporting the older Intel Core Duo processors? If not, then doesn't that mean there's a lot of Mac's that are going to be left behind? Does Apple plan to do anything else for these Mac's?
Intel Core Duos are older machines - the last one was discontinued in September 2006 (if I remember correctly); that means the newest of them is about 5 1/2 years old - a lifetime for electronics.
As for Apple having any plans for these older machines: first, we are not allowed to speculate here, but I can't see anyone supporting or doing anything for a computer that age. -
I bought 2 2TB WD Passport Drives with the intention of housing my iTunes/iPhoto libraries off my older MacBook. I have successfully transferred the Libraries to one and am using the other one for Time Machine. In Snow Leopard I could back up my computer to Time Machine no problem but when I did not exclude the iTunes/iPhoto drive the back up fails. Both drives have been reformatted, permissions repaired and checked in Disk Utility and one was replaced. I have been to the Genius Bar now 5 times. I have tried using USB drive and FireWire. Both drives are recognized and are working properly otherwise regardless how they are connected. Finally yesterday the Apple store installed Lion to see if that fixed the issue and it did not. Time Machine successfully backed up a USB Flash drive, and today I will try an older external drive. Any ideas on what else to try??? Do I have to resort to third party software like Carbon Copy Cloned to get this done? Any ideas why this wont work? I am using a FireWire converter but as I said, both drives are working normally otherwise (libraries working, time machine working for the computer's hard drive. Any ideas would be appreciated!!?
Thanks so much but none of that helped. It was driving me crazy because it would back up another external drive. I just changed the name of the drive from iPhoto/iTunes Library to Media Libraries and IT WORKED!! I guess for some reason it didn't like the drive being called iPhoto or iTunes ???? I don't understand but I have tried so many solutions and exchanging things out but the name change did it????!!!
Thank you for your help and replying to this. Guess I made my own issue! -
FCP X does not recognize projects and events on USB drive after a time machine restore of the MBP macintosh disk.
I upgraded from an i5 to an i7 15" MBP and restored my files using my time machine backup. All seemed to go ok, except I had to use the migration assistant because on the initial boot the MAC didn't recognize the backup database on the USB device. MAybe this is a hint.
Since when I start FCPX it too cannot finnd the project or event directories.
Before my upgrade, I had a choice of files either on the Macintosh disk or the 2TB USB disk.
Now only files on the Macintosh are accessible to FCPX. The USB drive is visible under events and project but it finds no projects or events.
Please help if you can.
Thanks
BarryThanks... alas no one has responded.
I think I have the structure that you are recommending.
I have a root level directory (Final Cut Events) with the files in them.
The puzzling thing is that it used to work before the migration!.
Anyway I'm going to move the contents to the root and see what happens.
On a slightly different note...
I also posted a question about CPU utilization. Can I ask a question or two?
While rendering a short clip, I noticed burst of disk activity when the render started (likely loading the media files into ram since I have about 4Gigs available, then almost no activity while the render is happening, then more disk activity when its done.
However the cpu activity is not as high as I would have expected since rendering requires a lot of cpu.
What is your experience? I know some render is done by the GPU, but in my older i5 the CPU was about 100%, now in my i7 its about 50%.
Please look at the attached utilization for CPU and disk activity.
Thanks for any thoughts... Barry -
Time Machine restore from WD my book live duo
Dear all and especially anyone out there who may be able to help me.
I have a MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion, a WD mybook live duo 3/6tb on the LAN, all wired.
It has been backing up through Time Machine fine until my MacBook crashed earlier this week so I have a fairly
recent snapshot of my MacBook before the crash.
I wanted to restore, after a Hard Disk erase which seemed necessary, from Time Machine but I couldn't make it work
as it kept asking me for user names and passwords of the NAS (which I entered of course) only
to result in error meesages saying the 'share' didn't exist. (Despite the fact that it does immediately
recognise the backup and location on the NAS.)
WD support advised me to first reinstall OSX ML and then use the regular Time Machine
functionality to restore my Mac.
- there is no option to fully restore your Mac through the wonderful TimeMachine time travel
functionality. I tried to restore my Macintosh HD back to a recent time point but that resulted in
nothing much (or nothing at all, I don't know). I don't see my old stuff, I still see a kind of vanilla
OSX ML installation.
- using the restore functionality (CMD-R during startup) and the time machine restore option,
results in the same nagging for names and passwords and error messages that the share
doesn't exist.
WD support couldn't tell me what the share name (and possibly password) would be for where it stores Time Machine backup
files (it doesn't show up in the list of shares when you look in the WD dashboard) and that makes sense to me as when you
tell Time Machine to use the NAS, it doesn't ask you for anything in terms of shares or passwords either.
So here I am: with probably a very good and recent complete backup at my disposal but no way of restoring it to my Mac.
So all I had and trusted to Time Machine is lost.
Is anyone out here who can help me? Anyone with a similar experience and hopefully solution? (That I can understand....I am a Mac user! :-) )
I would be enormously grateful!
Greetings from Amsterdam,
EricHello Eric, not sure if this helps or is exactly what you are looking for as I am unfamiliar with the NAS issue you have. However, I recently restored my computer from Mavericks back to Snow Leopard using my WD mybook. At first I was unable to use the WD mybook for restore, as is was not recognized by the computer after the menu came up from pressing "command R" during start up. I attributed this to the WD software requiring a password to access the drive. This is the same password that you (anyone who owns a WD mybook) have to supply each time you want to use time machine to back up files. There is a simple remedy I found. You need to go to your applcations and select "WD SmartWare," type in your password, then select the "Settings" tab at the upper right hand conner. Then select "Set up drive." On the right side of the window there is the "Set Security Options," sign in using your password in the box displayed under "password," then select "Remove Security." The last step would be to save the security setting, and you are all set to use your WD mybook without a password for full system restoration. So when you restart your computer and hold (or as I found press many times) the "command R" to access the restore window at start up, you can select restore from time machine, and have your WD mybook now appear in the timemachine device window, as the device is not password protected anymore. Once your computer is restored you can follow the same steps outlined above to reinstate your password for your WD mybook. Best of luck,
Marc -
Can I use a Time Machine restore from an older OS to Mavericks?
I ask because I tried about 2 years ago and had no luck. Here's a little back-story so my situation isn't confusing...
My iMac (2010) has been having tons of issues lately. More specifically, when I attempted to upgrade to Mavericks last week, it came back with S.M.A.R.T. errors after a scan, so it wouldn't allow me to update. So, in preparation for the HDD to crap out on me, I did frequent back-ups using Time Machine. Well, the day finally came and my iMac won't "turn on" anymore. When I turn it on, it sits at the Mac loading screen for several minutes and then just goes to a blank white screen. (NOTE: This isn't part of my question but if anyone has any suggestions on fixing this, please let me know, thanks!)
So, back to my question. If I buy a new iMac or a new macbook or whatever, will it be possible to use my Time Machine back-ups to restore everything on it or will it not allow me to because the operating systems are different? As mentioned, I attempted to make a restore on my friend's macbook that I purchased as a spare but when I tried, it came back saying "Different operating systems, cannot restore" or something to that degree. Is there a way around this? Do I have to somehow downgrade the OS on my new machine?
Luckily, I use iTunes for all my movies/music & Adobe Creative cloud so I can easily restore those on any machine but my desktop personal data, photos, etc are on the Time Machine restore. Help me if you can, thanks in advance! If you live near an Apple Store, make a Genius Bar appointment to have the computer tested. Supposedly there is no charge for testing. They can also give you an estimate.

How to restore a deleted iCloud note from time machine backup?
The short of it... one of my kids decided they didn't need certain notes, therefore deleted them!!!!
(my fault i did not have notes/synced/off on new device!),
but they are important and iCloud is synced across all devices and those notes are gone.
Wasn't sure if a device/ restore from back up would work - didn't.
Tried some of the Apple Communities/ going to lib/ turn off wifi/ move the 3 files to desktop/ move back to lib file, nothing.
Could I get some 'really specific' step by steps? seems others have had success, and maybe i'm in TM when I should be on my Mac or vice versa?! or in the wrong library?
My TM backups just does not let me get anywhere to restore those deleted notes.
Any help would be wonderful!
Thanks
Thinking Apple should have given us an iCloud safety net or at least allow TM/ iCloud to be userfriendly.I used this to restore my deleted notes from Time Machine, hope this helps others
closed Notes,
turned WiFi off,
entered finder/go+option/ to 'get to library': /Library/Containers/com.apple.Notes/Data/Library/Notes/
entered TM and selected the 3 files/ hit restore/ keep both (just to make sure, then I deleted the newer file, not the 'restored' file when this worked out)
opened notes and my deleted notes were back so I copied my notes into pages as a backup,
turned on WiFi and the notes disappeared!
replaced my restored notes by copy/pasting my backups into notes/iCloud....
notes/mac would not show across iCloud.... don't remeber this being an issue prior to Mavericks when 'all' notes were selected?
Apple needs to hear from us so they can fix glitches like this. TM was created for instances like this, hopefully this is just an oversite. Pass this along to Apple Feedback/iCloud/bug. If enough of us flag such issues, hopfully it's addressed on the next update.
Dear Apple, this should be much easier than it is. We should be able to open Notes, go into Time Machine, and restore anything regardless if it's on my Mac or on the cloud. -
I need to access a website that uses Safari 5.0. I'm using 5.1 and OS10.6.8. I do not have Time Machine activated - so I cannot go back and reinstall Safari 5.0 that way. Any suggestions?
Safari 5.1.9 and Java 6 are the latest versions available for OS X 10.6.8. To upgrade any further you would need to upgrade to Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8.4) through the Mac App Store.
