Older OS Disk Utility first aid use on newer OS

I have an external drive that has a bootable backup (10.3.7) of my Powerbook. The Powerbook currently is out of commision. I plugged the drive into an iMac and found the drive would not mount. The iMac's OS is 10.0.3. Can I use it's Disk Utility, First Aid to repair the error on the backup drive? The iMac says that there is an "Invalid node structure."

No, because Disk Utility cannot repair an "invalid node structure" problem. Disk Warrior (www.alsoft.com) may - and I stress "may" - be able to repair the directory, but if not you will need to reformat the drive.

This was a nightmare for me to fix, but after I learned how it was easy. If you get this error and you have not already restarted your computer, open you sharing preferences and make sure you ahve not set the everyone group to 'no access'. If you have change it and retry to run the permissions repair. If you have already restarted you will need to startup using your install DVD and then open terminal. In terminal type the following to fix your permissions.
    chmod 775 /Volumes/'Macintosh HD'
This will change your permissions and you should be able then to get past the grey screen.
    Hope this helps someone.

Hi everyone, I believe my permissions are the problem.
I let someone change permission settings to share music files on their hard drive and mine and another mac (3 in total) yesterday. I seemed to work. I can't remember if I then shut down my mac or just closed it. Anyway last night I was trying to organise the music files and burn them to dvd. I also tried change the permissions as some of the files were read only. I though it worked. It seemed to be burning and the screen saver came up, I clicked to exit screen saver and it just went to black and back to screen saver and i couldn't go any further. I had to hold down the power button to turn if off.
I tried to turn it on and now it's stuck on start up gray screen with the loading wheel thing? just loading forever.
I used disk utility, verified volume and repair disk are ok, but verify permissions and repair permissions, I get an Error message "the underlying task reported failure on exit"
I opened terminal and typed in what tryjezus1 said,"chmod 775 /Volumes/'Macintosh HD'" and pressed return. Not sure if I should have pressed return or if I should have just closed the window?. Anyway I'm still stuck.
I only have the mac since march so I believe I still have phone support, but if anyone can help I'd like to try and sort this out myself.

  • Disk Utility: First Aid: "Repair Disk" grayed out when i select the HD

I'm getting the flashing question mark folder icon at startup and my Mac never does start. I'm trying to run through the repair suggestions on this forum and on the support pages but I can't do much of anything with the disk utility. (I've done the reset PRAM step and I've tried reselecting a startup volume both with the startup manager --HD wasn't shown as an option-- and by holding down "X" on startup... neither helped.)
Under first aid, verify disk permissions, i get the "no valid packages" error message. But "Verify Disk Permissions" is the only button available to me when I select my internal hard disk. The support pages say to "Repair Disk" but I can't select that option.
I've tried to reinstall the OSX from the CD, but when the installer asks me to select a destination volume, nothing is available to select.
I am running version 10.4.something at least. My CD is the one that came with the computer a couple of years ago. I have one of the early Intel Macbooks.
I have an appointment at the Genius Bar after work tonight but I'd love it if I could fix this baby sooner.
    Am I hosed?

OK- Try a Single User boot- hold command +s while starting, and try and repair with fsck.
    -Startup in Single User mode.
-At the command-line prompt, type */sbin/fsck -fy*. Press Return.
fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:
*The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK*
-If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
    *FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED*
Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command again, until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
-When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type *reboot* at the prompt and then press Return.
-Your computer should start up normally and allow you to log in.
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck

  • Boot Camp Assistant & Disk Utility First Aid failing?

    Hi,
I am trying to open my download of 3DS Max for an assignment but the following problems are stopping me:
    1. The message ' The document "Autodesk_3ds_Max_Design_2012_English_Win_32-64bit" could not be opened. The file is too large'
    2. After advice on this forum I tried to create a partition with Boot Camp Assistant (of 32gb). But this failed and told me to repair the disk with Disk Utility.
    3. Disk Utility gives the following messages after I have tried repairing and also verifying the disk
    Would really appreciate some help!
    Thanks

Reinstall Leopard, but first use the Leopard install DVD Disk Utility to reformat the HD to one partition. See:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh14.html
It's for Tiger, but applies for Leopard as well.

  • Everytime I start Macbook Air it goes straight to disk utility, First Aid shows HD but when I try and reboot from HD it doesn't show up?

    Hi,
My Macbook Airs been having trouble the last couple of weeks, it got quite slow and then was taking forever to load. I tried rebooting in Safe Mode and it ran disc and permission repairs and it came back saying everything was ok (however I could still click the repair after when it normally grey's out).
The other day I turned it on and it went straight to Disc Utility, I ran the repairs again on my Hard drive - still said everything was okay. Went to the Apple menu and tried to startup from disc, but my hard drive doesn't appear - there are no options for me to start up from.
I also tried re-installing Yosemite from a USB, when I tried this my hard drive did appear with an exclamation mark on it. When I clicked this and tried to re-install it told me there wasn't enough space available? I should also mention that when I was originally doing First Aid I also erased everything to see if that would work so there should be no reason why there's no space!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Boot into the recovery partition (COMMAND + R) and see if you can reinstall the OSX from the 4 option menu.
    Ciao.

  • Disk Utility: First Aid Failed, Filesystem verify or repair failed

    Ouch,
So for some reason podcasts suddenly stopped downloading to my external music HD. Checked the permissions on the HD and it wasn't giving me access to the permissions even though I had permissions. Ejected the drive, mounted, ran Disk Utility and got the message above (subject of this post). The details box says the following:
    Invalid Sibling Link
    Volume check failed.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed
So.... is my external drive dead? Can it be fixed? Is everyone going to recommend pro tools and disk warrior again? Anyone that has a bright idea, I am all ears. I have Time Machine running, but I am not sure how I would restore the drive from that and get my data back. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Well, oddly, it just fixed itself. "Bogus" you say? It is really odd. It just mounted itself, all my audio is working and podcasts writing to the drive again. I ran disk utility again and it ejected the drive and I got the same error message. I'm getting tons of conflicts on my system ever since I did my clean install of Leopard, so I imagine it has something to do with that.

I ran a disk utility first aid and i recieved an error message, what should i do? It reads
    Volume bitmap needs minor repair
    Checking volume information
    Invalid volume free block count
(it should be 2073091 instead of 2072969)
    Repairing volume
The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired
Error: The underlying tast reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
What does this mean how can i fix it?

    Hi Amanda,
Although it's not cheap, Disk Warrior can repair most types of hard drive directory damage. Your other alternative is to reformat the drive (losing all data) and reinstall everything.

  • 2Can't burn a DVD using IDVD nor Disk Utility first time user-what is wrong

T he recording device reported the media error: Power calibration area error. (0x73, 0x03.)
    IDVD Version 6.0.3
Emac- OS 10.3.9--- in the owner's manual it DOES state my emac can burn DVDs. Is this correct?
I am using FujiFilm DVD-R . Never used the DVD apps or burner before. I PRAM'ed 3 times. Also did 6 CD audio burns to check the drive. Is it the media-- Fuji does not work? I used Office Depot generic for audio CD-Rs.
I keep getting this error message after about 20 minutes of programming the DVD-- then it ejects with this message:
"The recording device reported the media error: Power calibration area error. (0x73, 0x03.)"
When using the IDVD application to burn my slideshow onto a DVD; Then I contacted Apple Care and I was told to use Disk Utility to burn my DVD in lieu of IDVD not working.
I converted my slideshow into a .dmg format; all was verified successfully. Then I receive this error message when attempting to BURN DVD:
"STOP The device drained its buffer without burn under run protection"
I made a WONDERFUl slideshow-- of only 17 slides-- confirmed I have plenty of room on hard drive and et al on the "disk information". I have attempted since May 7th to get this DVD to burn my slideshow. PLEASE HELP ME!!! I have deadlines-- now it is for Tuesday May 15th. Please alert me to an alternative until I can get my Emac working properly on what I can do to make copies of my slideshow ASAP. Thank you.
Now I looked thru your ERROR message archives and found NONE to match mine. What do these error messages mean-- is my Emac not working? This is first time ever I tried to use IDVD and IMovie and Disk Utility--- so the first impression is VERY VERY VERY bad for Apple's "easy to use for first time customers"....
Oh to add information-- I DO have an external DVD recorder-- have yet to even see how to hook it up to my Emac-- if this is an alternative to meet my Tuesday deadline-- PLEASE let me know-- how do I burn a copy of my slideshow into an external DVD recorder?
My emac model: 1.25 GHz Power PC G4
    Memory 256 MB DDR SDRAM
    Machine Model: eMac
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.25 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 256 MB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.8.2f1
    Serial Number: G84181KDQQJ

Also did 6 CD audio burns to check the drive. Is it the media-- Fuji does not work?
Your drive is actually TWO devices - one set of optics and laser burns/reads CDs, another set of optics/laser reads/wtites DVDs. The fact that your drive can burn CDs doesn't mean it is working for DVDs.
I keep getting this error message after about 20 minutes of programming the DVD-- then it ejects with this message:
"The recording device reported the media error: Power calibration area error. (0x73, 0x03.)"

You might want to get back to Applecare and expalin again the error messages you are seeing. They really don't involve iDVD.
I converted my slideshow into a .dmg format; all was verified successfully. Then I receive this error message when attempting to BURN DVD:
"STOP The device drained its buffer without burn under run protection"
You either have a media problem or you have a DVD burner problem.

Well I had to make the copies for my presentation-- so the cheapest I could find in my area was Walgreens-- 39.99 for ONE COPY of a DVD! So I paid $70.00 and the clerk made 4 copies for me;-) So thanks Walgreens!
Now-- my Mac-- I could not find anything on shelves at Walgreens or Office Depot but the FujiFilm I already have... So I now have time to look elsewhere.
I did PRAM my Emac 3 times-- I tried these things also:
1)Saved the IDVD- .dmg format to QuickTime .mov
I uploaded to google video.com or whatever-- they use their own software-- .gvp file and player. All was successful (even now on YouTube-
    2) I then made another version in PowerPoint and saved it as an MPEG
Also for below-- I lowered the burn rate upon the 2nd try to 1x-- took one hour or more (I went to get a root canal... then exfoliate... then I came back;-)
Also tried different .mov from the web-- a great whale shark video that was only 49mb. My presentation is 120 mb. So I was just thinking-- make it smaller; burn slower.
3)I did try to burn from IDVD, Disk Utility and then the drag and burn/click method on the desktop-- put a blank DVD in-- drag the .mov icon to the blank DVD -- write a title for the blank DVD- formats it / Drag to trash-- Burn icon comes up/ Clicked it-- waited 20 minutes and received:
"Error: Error occurred while burning the disc. This disc can not be used."
So I put in another blank Fuji DVD-- just in case. Same error message-- so I am hoping it is the DVD itself and not the SuperDrive.
4)Also-- I tried to do audio CD burn-- just to make sure about the drive-- all was successful and I did a back up of my Itunes files-- 6 CDs they burned (they meaning "the Gods of Mac OS" ;-0 My audio CDs are Office Depot CD-R 52X700mb/ So the generic is better for CDs on my Emac that I know;-)
So I will use my weekend to try other DVDs-- and I have the safety net of Apple Care-- but then just realized-- my Extended Care plan is OVER at May 30, 2007!!! I called to ask to EXTEND it further-- I'll pay whatever-- NOPE-- 3 years was max on this contract. So any repairs I have to pay for after May 30th-- ISN'T THAT JUST THE WAY THE WORLD GOES? The DAY after your warranty on AnYTHING-- the thing goes kablooey?
But I still have days left--- and I know of a good Mac Repair person in area-- but it is just so darn difficult to move my desktop Emac (I got the GLASS monitor to save $300 or something) Weight Lifting is what it is-- weighs about 45lbs or more.
But it seems it may be the media I am using if the CD burner is working, right?
I can update-- if you want me to email direct-- just give me a note (my email is listed). Thanks all!!! I just want to impress everyone of how tenacious I am to find that my Emac is FINE-- it is just ME that is warped;-)

  • Disk Recovery/First Aid

    Hello
I am trying to repair a (supposed) disk error with my macbook pro and I've hit a bit of a snag.
    Perhaps you folks can help?
I'll explain what's happened so far.
At first the macbook began running very slow.
So I opened the Disk Utility and tried to verify the disk.
When it tries to verify the catalog file,
it breaks, reporting the error "Invalid Node Structure"
So I boot the machine into firewire disk mode
and plug it into my iMac
Open Disk Utility, try to repair the disk
Again, the verification shows Invalid Node Structure,
so it tries "Rebuilding Catalog-B tree"
at that point, the progress bar just hangs there, and
just keeps returning "Invalid Record Count" lines
Also, the Macintosh HD is unmountable.
So, do you think I have a hardware problem with the HD?
It's fine if I have to replace it, but
how should I approach backing up the data if I can't mount the disk?
    I will Include some screenshots...
    any help is greatly appreciated.
    thank you~ :]

It's hard to say whether there is a hardware problem. TeenTitan wrote a nice list of the progression of troubleshooting. Disk Utility is the first line, but is somewhat weak. I have DiskWarrior and that's the next thing I try. If it fixes the disk, then wait some more. If the problem was a one-time software glitch, it should not happen again. But if the problems come back, or if DiskWarrior or a similarly powerful utility was not able to fix the problem, at that point it is probably not safe to continue using that disk.
    statichue wrote:

That's a hard question. The disk has to be able to mount before it can be backed up. But you should try anyway. I just replaced the hard drive on my friend's MBP. It would not boot, but when I took the drive out and placed it inside a FireWire drive dock connected to my Mac, her disk did mount, and I was able to copy all of the data (as far a I can tell) to her replacement drive. So I guess sometimes a drive might work in a dock or enclosure even though it isn't working in the laptop itself.
Fortunately, it's easy to take the disk out of current MacBook Pros. Then, to do the copy, you just need a cable for bare drives, an empty enclosure, or drive dock. You can get cheap ones, but I like the ones with FireWire 800 because they're so much faster. Then you just use Apple Disk Utility, SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner to do your backup.

  • Disk Utility wont copy TimeMachine to new Drive using Restore

I'm trying to transfer my TimeMachine backups to a new firewire 800 drive from an old USB2 one. Having read the advice on here, I've tried to copy across the drive using restore. Disk Utility thought about it for 4 hours or so and then gave me the finger. So what do I do please?

What TO do.  Not what do.

  • What is disk utility, what is used for?

What is disk utlity, & what it used for?

It is used for a variety of things, including disk repair (if the data structures that keep track of data on the disk get corrupted), repair of permissions on the system files if they get messed up, erasing and partitioning disks, etc.  As Linc points out, Disk Utility's help can give you all the details.  Note that some things cannot be done to the system drive unless you start up from a different drive.
Also, note that if you're asking because you're deleting apps that you don't use, you really shouldn't do that with the preinstalled Apple apps, even if you think you don't have a use for them.  Sometimes deleting them can have unexpected side effects, and you never know when you might need such an app.

  • Disk Utility Freeze when using New Image

    Has anybody experienced the following?:
    my system:
Brand new Mac Pro 8-core 2.66GHz
    24GB RAM
    Snow Leopard 10.6.3 freshly installed
    Apple SuperDrive DVD
I am in the process to install a lot of software and I like to make Disk Image of the software DVD to make things quicker to install.
Now what happens is that as soon as I select New Image from Disk Utility (after selecting the DVD on the left menu), the New Image progress window appears and then Disk Utility freezes. The disk image is being created in the background, but the progress window DOES NOT show the disk image status and eventually I have to OPTION-APPLE ESC from Disk Utility.
    What I have tried is:
. delete plist for Disk Utility in Preferences
. repair permissions in SAFE BOOT mode
After that Disk Utility/New Image will work the first time as expected, and then the next time I am getting the same problem.
Any ideas what I could try to diagnose/fix this problem?
    Thank you!

    Thanks for your feedback.
As far as making a disk image or not, yes it takes some times to create it... longer? I am not sure because when you install a software there is a back and forth reading/writing, whereas when you create your disk image it does the reading and writing in a linear fashion... anyway to me the big benefit is when you have more than one disk part of an install (Apple FCS, Adobe CS, etc...) once you have created all your disk image, it will install everything automatically without having to feed each disc... and usually I have to do a fresh install later on... and finally it gives you a backup of your software...
    Thanks again.
