Older PSD and Tif files don't import

I know I have seen this on the forum, but I could not find it. I am importing all of my archives into Aperture. Some older PSD and Tiff files (pre 2000) just don't import. No warning. Just missing files. This is a bit scary as I can't go through all of the folders 1 by 1 to see what is missing. Is this a known bug....any work arounds. Thanks
mac book, Dual 2gig G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Maybe. But, frankly, Aperture is not a PSD archiving and workflow appliation. It is a photographic workflow application. Adobe, by nature of having written Photoshop, probably has better support for old Photoshop formats than does Apple.
If you really need to import 40,000 PSD files into something, I would suggest Aperture is not the best tool for you. You want an asset manager or something that specializes in archiving/search. Aperture's raison d'etre is RAW photos, you know, that come from a camera.

  • Tif files will not import with the same filenames as the .nef files

When I work on a .nef file, say x.nef, Lightroom 1.0 will allow me to export the x.nef as x.tif to the same folder as the x.nef file resides, but obviously I need to import the x.tif file into the folder for it to show up in LR When I try to import the x.tif file into LR it shows up the the file list OK. When select it and try to import it I get a message telling me that I can't import it as the file x.nef already exists. I didn't select x.nef but x.tif. It will allow me to import it into a different folder, but that is not what I want to do. i need the keep the relevant net and tif files with the same name in the same folder.
Adobe tech. support suggested; reinstalling, trashing the LR preferences folder, making new databases. None of these solved the problem. In LR beta 4 I could save import tif files with the same file name the .nef with no problem, but not in LR1.0.
Using Win XP Pro SP2. Pentium P4 3.0 with 2gig ram.
Has anyone else had this problem. Any assistance appreciated.

I agree (Adobe) that first the concept that michael.nef and michael.tif and michael.jpg are different files needs to be changed.
A duplicate is a file that has the same filename and extension and the same content measurements.
Under the above concept or any concept, ignore duplicates should bring in any file to LR with the same name (contents and measurements) and different extensions.
I do edit in NEF (more now if I use LR instead of PSE5), do save to PSD, and do save to L/F JPG. If I had to layer in PSD, then I use that for printing, otherwise LR. I always have to make large jpgs to upload to web printing sites, and even small jpgs (now we have the same name and extension (but the measurements would be different) to email. Yes, we do keep copies of an image. I can see where I might want to have the edited .NEF and the PSD in the lib to view, cuz they may have different edits on them.

  • Dng and tif file with the same name, in the same Lightroom folder

If I have both a dng and tif file with the same name, in the same Lightroom folder, I can only see and access one of them. Is there a setting I can change in order to see both of them?

If you can only see one of them, which one can you see?
Was the DNG and the TIF imported at the same time?
How are you trying to "access" the files?
The more details you can provide, the more likely it is that someone will be able to help you.

  • Importing PSDs and TIFs with same image # as related RAW

Before I got LR4 I developed a series of images (thousands) with Bridge and Photoshop.  I've now decided to build a LR catalog of the series.
As I import I want to use the Image # option to rename files, making the whole mess of photos "cleaner" with unique names, etc.  Of course I want ot import Raw's and the Tif/Psd images I made along the way.  I notice the Image numbering process does NOT recognize the relationship between the raw and edited files.  So files (img_123.nef and img_123.tif) become (img-01.nef and img-02.tif).  I would prefer the tif file be named img-01.tif so the link between the two remains obvious.
Is there a way to make this happen?  Key to creation date & time?
I realize this is a really specific issue, but if the point is to make the series tidier and more coherent it would be a useful feature.
    Thanks in advance.

Date and time works, but it's a little indirect and you can't so easily search for this. You can IIRC extract just the numerical part of the original image filename, and build that into your renaming options - maybe along with a sequence number to impose uniqueness. This should be buried inside all versions derived from the same original capture, at least by default.
As one example, you could get maybe ... 00024-img121.nef, 00025-img122.nef, 00026-img122.tif, 00027-img122.tif, 00028-img123.nef ... - if you had two added TIF edits of the image with 122 in its original name, as well as an original Raw of 121, 122 and 123. A text search for "img122" would then find all related versions.

  • Lightroom 5.4 problem importing older crw and nef files

Built new computer. Fresh install of Photoshop Lightroom 5.4. Imported photos to lightroom 5.4. After import session completed noted some folders in catalog had zero photos. Checked folders in explorer and photos/files are present. Able to open and view photos/files in Photoshop cs5.
Files are raw files format  from canon G1 CRW and Nikon d70 NEF.
Any ideas? How do I proceed? Should I download and install the free Adobe DNG Converter? But these are old cameras?
    thanks

Thanks for the reply. No the files were not list in a LR Catalog anywhere on the computer. I was able to import the missing files by right clicking on the empty folder in the LR Catalog, selected the import to folder option. This opened the import LR Window, I deselected the "duplicate option" . This allowed the files to become visible, not the usual grayed out thumbnails usually seen if attempting to import a duplicate. Once I selected the raw files LR imported them to the folder. I did get a LR message stating that a "smart preview already was present for files.
If LR was able to verify a smart preview for the files from a previous import, why were the folders in LR displaying a 0 for files/photos?
I am in the process of reviewing the LR Catalog to ensure everything was imported.

  • Reverse search massive, unorganized database for visually similar .ai, .psd, and .pdf files?

    Hello,
I'm currently needing to organize 10 years of projects, folders, and all associated images for company that has had no filing or naming conventions. Total chaos. First order of business is to get all their image files organized, starting with print-ready .ai, .psd, .pdf and .tiff files. Probably some jpgs in there as well.
What I'd like to do is grab the low res photos from their website, and run them through reverse image search software so I can see/locate all visual instances of that photo living inside clusterf..., er database, including all the relevant file formats, not just .jpgs. Has anyone been successful doing this in Bridge? Or is there an easier way? Any advice would be deeply appreciated...looking at a month of brain-numbing busy-work, otherwise.

It's clearly not impossible, just different than you expect. Create your playlist as you want it to appear in the Current tab (meaning don't dump every single song from your library in there, just the ones you want) and then save the playlist.
Perre wrote:And if I try to play the m3u file created (the one with every song listed) through freevo I get a message that the directory is empty. What am I doing wrong??
Look at save_absolute_paths_in_playlists in your mpd.conf.

  • .DV and .MOV files don't play smoothly in the Final Cut Express viewer

    Hi,
I bought Final Cut Express 4.0 yesterday, so I have no experience with it. I only used iMovies HD 6.0.3 a little before.
    Problem:
When I import my .MOV and .DV files into FCE 4.0, then try to watch them in the viewer they don't play smoothly. The sound is fine, but the video is not smooth, it plays in stops and starts.
Just to see, I tried importing a .FLV file and it plays just fine in the viewer, both audio and video runs smoothly with no 'stop starting'
I experimented with importing different file sizes of .DV and .MOV, from 3GB to a few MB even and even very small clips of a few KB. But regardless of the size I always have this problem of them not running smoothly in the viewer.
One of the .MOV files I tried to import was a reference file, and I later read in the manual that FCE may only recognise the original file. But I have the same problem even with the Original file and other self contained files that have been copied from the original. So it doesnt seem to just a problem with reference files.
Any idea what the problem might be?
Is it something to do with how I have FCE set up?
Or is it that the .MOV and .DV files are not being properly imported and is this why they are not running smoothly in the viewer?
I'm using a MacBook with 10.4.11 operating system, which the guys at my local Apple store said would be fine for using FCE 4.0.
    Hope someone can help,
    Ian.

Look at item properties for the .mov and .dv files. What exactly does it say they are? What drive are they playing back from? Make sure the contents of the viewer are set to fit to window in the View popup at the top of the viewer.

  • Rendering PSD and Tiff files in Shaked

Bonjour. All of my psd and tiff renders in Shake are creating invalid files, i.e. that can't be opened in Shake itself of Photoshop etc.
Anyone have a line on this? Open exr and jpeg files render fine.

I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum to post this request, but I figured that this was the best place to ask.
These feature requests better be placed in the correct location:
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family
You also might get a better answer but I'm not sure what way you need to leave comments and notes. You already have the option to label and rate the files and of course you have the IPTC Metadata to leave comments in (e.g. IPTC status / instructions).
As for the request to view layers, that would be nice but certainly not easy to realize. But it might be useful to extend this request in more detail, about how would you see them. Currently the preview window has a max of 9 files to view in one panel, would you see them scrollable or together in one window? Some layers have only masks or brush corrections in masks, would you see them in the same way as in PS using alt click on a mask?
The more detailed you make your feature request the better chance in getting more votes and better replies in possibility etc.

  • Versioning psd and psb files

Is it possible to create a file visioning system (.psd and .psb) with adobe's solutions, out the file itself, to not increase the weight?
    Thanks
    Alban

Keeping Adjustment Layers organized in Layer Groups representing the correction steps should be no problem.
Touch-up, transformations etc. of course can be problematic if the Layer Masks of higher (Adjustment) Layers are affected, but Smart Objects can be useful there.
Basically a stringent non-destructive work-flow offers advantages in my opinion, but there can be a trade-off: the individual files can get considerably larger and therefore saving-times increase considerably.
What are likely edits your customers will request in each round?

  • I exported jpg, tif, psd, and dng files from Lightroom but Aperture does not see them except for dng during import

How do I import jpg, tif, psd files exported from Lightroom 3 into Aperture 3.2?  I had no problems before...seems like since I installed Lion, they do not show up in the import folder.

How are you trying to import them (again) ?  If you're importing through the Import Window and have RAW only set then that's all you'll get.
Also what's an Import Folder? Not sure how Lightroom fits into this. If you share your workflow with us we might be able to help.

  • In PSE 13, when I open a folder, jpeg files have a preview image, but PSD, DNG and CR2 files don't. Also, no thumbnail below the file list.

Working in PSE 13, when I open a folder, jpeg files have a preview image, but psd files just have white sheet of paper as preview.  I have to open the file to be able to see it.  Also, there is no thumbnail of the file below the file list.Surely, there's a setting that needs to be changed. I did not have this problem with Elements 12. This is a real bother because I have to use Lightroom to see all the file types. It seems as if Elements is using the standard Windows file loader that can't show previews of file types it doesn't know including .PSD, DNG and CR2. Is that a bug or did I do something wrong? Thanks for any help.

I am using Windows 7 64 bits. Working in the editor, I never use the organizer. The screen above is not the same at all that I got in Elements 12, it was completely different and showed me a thumbnail below the listing when I single clicked on one of the files. In Elements 12, I also could see  a thumbnail of all the file types, not only the jpegs. It is as if the loader is the regular Windows used anywhere, not the right one for Elements. I hope someone understands my problem.. Thanks.

  • PSD and Pict file extensions ..

    Hello all
I'm now working with Adobe Elements 4 , I know it's an older version but. I found a disk that had the app so I thought would give a try, I'm loving it so fare but I do have a few questions.
Im importing PSD files , I know and understand it imports as a separate sequence. These sequences need rendered. I can handle that ok, my question is , is there a way I can imported a layered pic file, that will allow me to open this file with Adobe and edit a single layer ?
    Thanks

… why do we need to continue to have two formats. Why not just one?…
Another thing to keep in mind is that Photoshop uses the PSB format to save Smart Objects inside image files, so if you ever save SO Layers to files, you have PSB files.
Now, you're not remotely suggesting that Adobe drop support for the PSD format, are you?
I can't even imagine what motivated you to ask that question.

  • PSDs and Broken Files

Have added text as a layer to lots of JPEGS in the course of which automatically changed photos to PSDs. Because the backup to CDs was going to need far too many CDs, decided to delete all layers, which I did and then backed up to CDs. I then discovered that the CDs would not open the individual photos, only dispaying a camera sign and PSD.   I then tried changing the format back to JPEG, but ended up with "broken" thumbnails and no photo and could not even open the original which I had duplicated, Apart from deleting some 700 photos in that catalogue and importing them again from my Memory Cards, which I luckily had not erased, what should I have done, or do ?  I use WinXP and can still view the photos with Elements 5 on PC, except for those broken.   Help!!!!

Hi - Thankyou for taking the time to reply to my query, I appreciate that.
As we travel a bit and take lots of photos, I deleted on PC down to 700 kept from 1700+ taken on a recent trip. For the first time I decided to add the various place names etc (as you do forget over time) to the individual photos as a text layer. Time consuming but no problem. When I finished that, to save disk space and risk losing the photos if my PC crashed,  I started to back up to CD  to discover  back up would require 21 CDs. I then went back and deleted all the text layers which reduced the number of required CD.s to 10, which were finalised and verified, again no problem, expecting to display the photos as a slideshow.
Apparently Windows does not like PSD files as neither Windows Live Photo Gallery or Windows Picture and Fax Viewer will display the photos saved to the CD, they will only show the CD name ie. Greenland 2009 but nothing else. Documents My Pictures only displays thumbnails with a camera picture with PSD on it. However I have Googles Picasa 3 which will  allow me display the photos on the CD as a slideshow. but unfortunately in no particular order.  I have tried changing the format back to JPEGS in Elements Editor and OK'd the change which appeared to be accepted  but stll show as PSDs when I switch back to Organiser (also show as PSDs in Properties) where I have for each photo, one broken thumbnail and one awaiting editing to be completed. I have not yet found a way of completing the "edit" without first deleting  the broken thumbnail, and of course I then lose the photo to the Recycle Bin.
Although PSE, does display each photo individually, I am not sure if it is displaying from the CD or if it is switching to the photos still on my hard drive. I would need to try a careful experiment!
Not being PC technically minded I would have thought that Microsoft would recognise PSD files and Photoshop,  since Elements convert JPEGs to PSDs, could allow PSDs to be changed back to JPEGs. Perhaps they do but PSE8 and WIN 7 is needed!
    Anyway, thanks again.  Alan Gordon

  • Bridge Plugin: Make comments and see layers in PSD and TIFF files

I've been searching the interweb thin for Bridge plug-ins without luck.
I work in a production company and we have a quite intense QA process meaning that we compare images against each other and return feedback to editors.
So instead of cycling through applications it would make our life so much easier to just stay inside adobe bridge.

Ps. it is not important what version of Bridge it will be compatible with (but preferable cs6)
