Hi everyone I installed Snow Leopard the other day but now I can't launch any of my Office 2004 applications I did what the forums have been saying and made sure I had no duplicate or corrupt fonts but to no avail. I also use Guitar Pro as I am a professional guitar teacher and it crashes all the time. I have installed Rosetta 3 times but still the same. I also can't get Pages to load. Come one Apple where's the support I have been a loyal customer for 12 years. cheers Johnmac

You could reinstall Sno with an erase and install. Or you could go back to Leo via an erase and install or an archive and install. The erase and install alternatives assume that you have a good backup or that you don't mind reinstalling your apps. You'd have to back up your data, of course.
Archive and install is a good play assuming that you are not ready to do an erase and install. Note that Apple doesn't recommend going backwards this far (i.e., going back beyond a current major version, say, going 10.6.1 back to 10.5.7) via Archive and Install. But, regardless it is a way to get back to Leo and to pave the way for an erase and install of Leo in the future. Note that if you go backwards, then you will not be able to preserve user and network settings--which is a good thing. Fortunately, there is a way to extract anything needed from a prior user home folder. [Here is the explanation|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2196]. Even though you don't want Sno any more, it would be nice to have a bootable clone of your Sno installation on an external for safety purposes. Also, I would repair disk and permissions before archiving and installing.

I had the same problem with my iPad, i couldn't get the newer version of itunes because the computer was too old and my iPad couldnt sync with the old itunes. I got a PC from school a few months later so that solved the problem for me. Unfortunately i don't think there would be a program to put your music on your iPod, iTunes should be the only way to transfer files to Apple devices. What operating system are you running and what version of it is it?

Hello,
I am a newer mac user, I got a position at a local school district doing PC Support for both macs and PC's (85% Macs though) We have some older software that we use that the people need to print from. These programs open the Classic software to open and try to print in the same way. How would i go about adding Print Drivers for newer printers, and also set up Jet Direct printing. I can do it in OSX 10.3.9, but the Classic part is throwing me for a loop. I came into this job only knowing PC's and a little linux, and i've been here for about 2 months now.

Are you running with Mac OS X Server? If so, almost everything a User creates is put in his home directory on the Server by default. You may need to look there, too.
On stand-alone OS 9, sometimes those files are in a spool folder inside the System Folder, waiting to be printed. Sometimes called "PrintMonitor Documents". PrintMonitor is the de-spooler, which will need to be enabled to de-spool.

Can it be possible that all flv files are slightly different depening on the software program used to create them

Can flv files be different and kinda awkward, if their produced in older or newer version of flash video encoder? Or anyoher software programs that can convert to the flv format?
If so, have any of you folks come across an easy way to fix?

Yes, I'm not sure if it's still common, but for a while different programs didn't add certain meta data to the encoded file, so you wouldn't know how long it was etc... The way to fix has mostly always been FLVMDI: http://www.buraks.com/flvmdi/

Older Software Question

I have some older software (Creative Suite Premier from 2006). I have been using it without issue for the most part but am now looking to either load it onto a new computer or upgrade to a cloud version. Is my only option to sign up as a new customer since I don't have CS3? I'm not really interested in paying 50/month. It would be great to be able to talk to someone about this, or speak to someone in tech support about why Photoshop won't recognize my serial number but all the other programs do. I tried the online tools for help with this, but they didn't solve the problem, so I just haven't been using it. Thanks.

You have not provided any system information or other details, so we can't help you with your PS issue nor can we actually advise on which route to take with your new software. We simply don't know what your needs are based on your lack of info.

Total Newbee, How to open ports 5198 and 5199 for Amateur Radio software program

I am a Amateur Radio operator using a software program called Echo Link which will enable me to talk to other radio operators around the would through repeaters running this software. I need to open ports 5198 and 5199 in my Airport Time Capsule for this software to work. How do I open these ports? They talk about mapping the ports which I don't understand. Below is a screen shot of an older version of Airport that shows what I want to do.
I tried to do it but it does not work and I can't change the private IP Address. Here is a screen shot of what I tried to do below. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Will upgrading on to OS X Mavericks (from Snow Leopard 10.6.8) affect the running of the installed 3rd party softwares/programs?

I have just received an email encouraging me to upgrading on to OS X Mavericks (from Snow Leopard 10.6.8). Currently I do have in my computer several 3rd party software and programs (from Adobestuff, finalcut Pro, MS Office, ILife etc.
Will upgrading to OS X Mavericks affect the running of these software /programs? Will I need to also upgrade these softwares?

There may be issues with compatibilty, as with any OS upgrade. Snow leopard (10.6.N) includes a piece of software from Apple called Rosetta. This software allows older PowerPC applications to run on Intel based Macs. This software does not run on any OS X higher than the latest Snow Leopard, 10.6.8. You can see if you have any of programs that require Rosetta installed by bringing up the "System Information" application through spotlight (click on the magnifying glass icon on the upper right, type System Information in the search field and select the application thta is found).
Once in System Information select "Applications" under "Software" near the bottom of the list. Scroll through the list of applications and if any indicate that they are PowerPC based then they will not run under Lion, Mountain Lion or Mavericks.

Is there a software program that purges older applications plus support files that do not run on OSX7?

There are a lot of them that claim to but so far none of them had proven really reliable.
For thiose applications that have uninstaller, I use them. If not I drag the applications to the rash and empty the Trash.

I am totally happy with the way iPhoto organizes my photos and how I can work with iMovie to create slide shows with music from iTunes, etc.
I have been shooting mostly high resolution jpegs and I continue to learn more and more about photography, post processing etc. I realize that the small adjustments I can make in iPhoto are good, and are adequate most of the time. However, a have started to experiment with shooting RAW images and would like to go the next step, ie. post processing.I am totally technically challenged and need SIMPLE, INTUITIVE programs and am certainly NOT anywhere ready for Photoshop CS whatever!
After having these programs sit on my computer, I decided to try to see if I could figure them out. When I opened Aperture, this is what first comes up.

I have heard horror stories about moving your entire library to Aperture, ending up with 2 libraries, etc. etc. hence my previous reluctance in attempting Aperture. In addition, many of my photography friends are saying: Go with Lightroom 3.....you’ll love it!
So here is my dilemma. I don’t want to mess around with my iPhoto library. All I want to be able to do, is to isolate a few photos, export them to Aperture, Elements, and work on them there, then bring them back into iPhoto.
Can I do this? Should I forget about Aperture and Elements and look at purchasing yet another program like Lightroom?

Export those few photos via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option with Kind = Original to the Desktop. Then import them into the Aperture library. That would keep one copy in your iPhoto library and another in your Aperture library to edit, etc.
You can use Photoshop Elements 9 from within iPhoto as your editor of choice. However, if you edit a raw file in iPhoto with PSE9 the resulting edited version must be saved outside the iPhoto Library and imported back in as a new file. For editing jpegs just do a Save (not a Save As) and it all will be kept within iPhoto.
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always. In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note: to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

Adobe air with flex, file new, open and save for Desktop software program

I already have a headache from all the searching. I cannot believe this to be such a confusing topic as every software program we create must be able to save user input, right.
Here is the problem:
Novel writing software program Main window has tabnavigator with four navigatorcontent pages 1. characters, 2. worlds, 3. objects, 4. Editor
Each navigatorcontent page has user input fields in the form of textinput component, textarea component, richtexteditor component, etc.
problem 1:
The user needs to be able to open a new project and give it a name and state where it must be saved. All user input in the Novel writing software program must be attached to the file name the user specified - cannot give sample code cause I don't even know where to start looking anymore.
Problem 2:
If the user has now defined a new project name, all his input from the different input components has to be compiled into a single file that can be saved. (Dan Pichelman gave me a satisfactory answer on using the file.borwseforsave funtion.) That makes sense, but I first need to get all the user input into that single file. I was convinced that it must be an xml file and that there would be a guide on how to do this but...
Problem 3:
This brings me to another problem. All the pages I've researched so far tell me how to load data from an xml file into a component, but not how to write the text from the component into the xml file. And this xml file cannot be the prefs file in the storage directory, it has to be named by the user and then after filling in all his text in the different tabs of the software, must be saved in this xml file and saved where the user chooses.
Problem 4:
now that the user put in his text and it is written to an xml file that he has named and set the path to, he goes on vacation and in two weeks opens his saved file to work on his project again. All the data that was stored in the xml must now be written back into the different user input components so he can continue working on his project, truth be told, there are some samles and tutorials on this subject, but again from only a single page perspective not a multiple tab perspective.
Problem 5:
Now the user has deleted and/or changed some text he put in when he started, he wrote some more text in the textareas and texteditor and he clicks the file - save button. The xml file or whatever needs to be used must be updated and saved with all the changes overwriting the old file.
Problem 6:
The data entered by the user will end up being a book of say 400 pages. This data will obviously be mostly in the richtexteditor component, so whatever method of saving is used, database or xml or whatever, needs to be able to contain all this data.
Thought, if you are working with for instance, microsoft powerpoint, it has multiple pages all containing different user inputs and when you click flie - save, it saves all that input into one file. When I as a user opens that saved file it loads all that content back into its place and I can change and manipulate the input and save it again. I would have thought this would be one of the first things adobe or any other software would teach as this is what sofware programs are all about. But alas, the tutorials on this subject for adobe air for Desktop application is extreeeeemely rare.
My promise is, if someone can help me with this or there is a tutorial out there that covers this properly I will write a tutorial on this for other newbies as I progress step by step.

I have the MG8220 printer and would like to print on a DVD disc using a desk top software program

In the past I have been using a desktop software program to produce the graphics and then printing paper labels. Using a template of a disk. Works fine with my ip4600 printer. Now with the MG8220 printer that can print on disks, how can I do this without resorting to copying from an existing labeled disk? I don't want to copy a disk but rather print onto a disk using a prepared graphic scaled to fit on a disk.

Hi excolprof,
We only support disc printing with the supplied Easy Photo Print and My Image Garden software. You are welcome to try using third party programs, but as they are not supported, the only steps I can recommend would be to make sure that hte paper size is set to CD Disc within the software.

First click on the Apple > Logout and Log back in or restart the unit see if that solves it. If it doesn't do you have a backup of your system prior to upgrade? Check Disk Utility and see how much space is being used to make sure the drive wasn't somehow erased.

Unfortunately I tried that and it didn't work. Thanks for the help though. I tried to uninstall and it said I couldn't because the file is corrupt or something, but I think I finally got it uninstalled and/or deleted or whatever, but now I try to reinstall/download it again from the beginning and I can't. No matter what I do I can not get Firefox working again. No matter how many times I try to redownload it. Any other suggestions?
