Older unplayed podcasts don't sync

On several podcasts to which I subscribe, I have older (non-current) unheard episodes which I am unable to sync to my iPod. iTunes is set to sync "all unplayed" episodes, but it only seems to sync NEW unplayed episodes. For example, in one podcast I have listened to the five most recent episodes, but not to the sixth. As I continue to download new episodes they will sync, but these older unplayed episodes will not.
I have verified that I am using the most current version of iTunes and the most current iPod software. I also tried restoring my iPod, but the problem persists. Based on comments here, I have double checked to see if the podcasts are being added into a playlist, or if I can find them under Genre -> Podcasts on the iPod, but they aren't there.
iPod Nano 1GB   Windows XP   iPod and iTunes software are current

I'm having the same trouble that you're having. I discovered my favorite podcasts long after they were created, and I would like to catch up.
iTunes currently syncs "most recent", "most recent unplayed", and "most recent new." I would love for a fourth option: "Least Recent Unplayed." Only three at a time, of course, because I have a iPod Nano.
Manual syncing is fine and all, but it's not automatic.

  • Some podcasts don't sync

I've recently began having this problem - some podcast files don't get transfererd to my 60G video ipod. Some podcasts have new, unplayed files that don't seem to get recognized for transfer to the ipod, no mater what I do. I've tried various settings, including sync all podcasts; I've tried deleting the podcasts and redownloading them; etc.
I believe this problem may have started happening when I updated to iTunes 7.0 (and updated my iPod at the same time) but I'm not sure.

The podcast publisher says that there appears to be a technical issue with iTunes 7, however he believes that he has found a workaround. I will let you know when the problem is fixed, so maybe he can share the details with other publishers that are having problems.

  • Podcasts don't sync

My ipod worked really well until last week. Started playing it all night. Now when I sync it won't remove unwanted content or add new podcasts.
I've even deleted stuff from the playlist and now it won't sync the playlist.
so I restored it to factory condition (successful restore. didn't fix issue)
    updated all the software
    created this account in community
    synced about 12 times
there are new podcasts in my podcast section. They won't go on my ipod.
Tells me I don't have room for everything, will put as much as it can.
So I checked manually manage and still no joy
    What to do?

I'm not 100% sure about this.  I know some users have just created an On-The-Go playlist for their podcats.  They added the podcasts to the playlist in the order they wanted them to play in and it worked just fine when they listen to that playlist.
I know you can also set up a Smart Playlist in iTunes for the podcasts (sorted by Date) and then sync that to your iPod.

  • Podcasts don't sync, but songs do. Why?

I downloaded a bunch of songs today and a couple of podcasts, then synced my iPod. The songs all synced, buy the podcats didn't, although I can see them listed in iTunes.
What am I doing wrong? (If it matters, my iPod in in my iPhone).

When you connect the iPod (iPhone) and select it in the sidebar of iTunes, there is a separate tab for Podcasts. You have to select the setting on that tab to sync your podcasts.
(I don't have an iPhone, but I'm assuming it works the same way as a regular iPod.)

  • Unplayed podcasts not marked with dot at top level list

    Hello,
Since I recently upgraded to iTunes 11.2, I've been having all kinds of trouble with podcasts.  Here's the most recent headache.
Today, my "Podcasts" item in the side menu on the left says there are 6 unplayed episodes.  When I click on "Podcasts", there are only 4 podcasts marked with the blue dot indicating that they are unplayed.  Where are the two additional unplayed podcasts?  It turns out that there are two podcasts that have unplayed episodes, but they're not marked as unplayed in the list of podcasts.  If I click on the arrow to the left of the podcast name to expand the list, I can see the unplayed episodes there, marked with a blue dot.
So, for two (and only two) podcasts, unplayed episodes are marked with an unplayed blue dot next to the individual episodes, but the top-level listing for that podcast in my list of podcasts doesn't show the unplayed blue dot.  There are two issues with this.  1) These "hidden" unplayed episodes don't sync to my iPod (i.e. only 4 podcast episodes went to my iPod this morning, even though I have 6 unplayed episodes), and 2) I can't tell which podcasts have unplayed episodes without expanding all of the listings for my podcasts, which is obnoxious.
I previously solved this problem by unsubscribing from the offending podcasts and resubscribing.  However, the problem is back now.  I'd really prefer not to have to delete and resubscribe every week.
Are there any other better podcast handlers out there than iTunes?  I'm getting so tired of the slow decent into the abyss with this bloated, dysfunctional piece of software.  Every time a new release comes out, something breaks or some feature I use is taken away, replaced with some iOS-centric Apple-store-linked "BUY NOW" button.  Ugghh.  I just want to play my nerdy NPR podcasts in peace, Apple.
    Thanks!
    Adrian

Did you ever figure this out? I just realized I posted a similar question. 9 months later and no Apple staff have answered this question nor have they fixed this (if it is a bug)? Not particularly impressive.

  • 3 Most Recent Unplayed Podcasts is selected - But iTunes still syncs all

I've selected "3 most recent podcasts" to be synced with my iPod, but iTunes still syncs all the podcasts, without deleting or omitting older, played podcasts.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Ben

I have had a variation on this problem for years.
If I tell iTunes not to sync Podcasts, it does it anyway and just makes them invisable to the iPod. You can see them in iTunes when navigating the iPod.
I reported to Apple, but nothing ever fixed. Mind you, they still can't get Apple Mail to check the system preferences to learn which is the first day of the week so I don't hold my breath for an easy fix to either apps.
The only way I found to resolve it is to select the option to only sync ticked items and then unselect all the podcasts, choosing only those you wish to sync.
It's messy, it shouldn't be required, but with 10GB of podcasts on my machine, I haven't any other choice.
Unless someone from Apple knows of a proper fix?

  • All Unplayed Podcasts - Not Syncing

Seems like there is a problem with syncing and Podcasts. iTunes is reporting 167 unplayed podcasts but the iPhone was only syncing 60 of those. I updated to the new iTunes today and that helped (iphone now sync's 123 unplayed podcasts) a little but I am still not getting all of the podcasts.
I've got the 16GB iPhone with 10GB of free space so space shouldn't be a problem.
Has anyone experienced this problem? Any fixes?

I sort of had the same problem. I usually transfer podcasts manually to my Touch. Recently, (not sure if it was before or after updating iTunes) I couldn't transfer podcasts at all. I tried manually and with sync. The only thing that would happen was about a one second long "syncing" message on the Touch's screen. After syncing, all of my podcasts were gone. The Podcast section was totally empty.
Two days ago I found out that my podcasts were actually in the Touch. They showed up in the browsing window of the Touch. The Touch was treating the podcasts like a music genre. To make the podcasts available to play (since they were actually on the Touch) I made a playlist of the podcasts. They now show up on the playlist where I can play them. Apple certainly needs to look at the newest iTunes and fix this podcast problem. It is an annoying fix.
To see if your podcasts are on your phone or not use the browse button on iTunes while your iPhone is highlighted on the directory on the left side of the screen. If your podcasts are there you can make a playlist in iTunes and set your podcasts in there. The will then transfer over.

  • Problem in syncing unplayed podcasts only

Since the update before 7.1.1 (and continuing with 7.1.1) I am unable to sync only unplayed podcasts to my ipod. It does not distinguish between 5 unplayed or 5 latest podcasts etc.
I have always updated my iTunes whenver Apple has published an update.

In the course of your troubleshooting to date, have you tried the suggestions from the following document?

  • Some podcast just don't sync

    Hi,
I have an ipod touch 1gen, my podcast settings are "sync all new podcasts" but since some time I've noticed that some podcasts, even if new, never make it to my ipod, they just remain on itunes, marked as unwatched and new.
I've tried changing the settings to "sync all unwatched" and even manually select them, same result, they remain stucked in itunes.
I have itunes 9.02 for mac.
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks in advance,
    jp

I have the same thing happening to me. I discovered it to be an sync'ing issue with some (video)podcast not syncing to the iPod anymore because iTunes " thinks" the audio/video format is not supported by the iPod.

  • How to add back older, played podcasts to iPod?

I cleared out some room from my nano and now I'd like to put back some of the podcasts that I removed to sacrifice for others. However, when I add them back iTunes says it's copying them but they don't show up on the nano. I'm assuming this is because it's still set to sync all unplayed podcasts. But when I remove that preference it deletes all the podcasts from the nano. When I put back on any variation of podcast sync, I can't get these back in because they're not recent or unplayed. Uncheck the sync button and I get nothing again. Can I really not add any older podcasts back in while any kind of sync is checked (since unchecking it kills the whole deal) ?
These podcasts exist in the iTunes folder, but I can't manually or otherwise get them back into the nano.
    Um...help? : )

Well, I've discovered this much: If I drag it from the library onto the iPod icon it will say it's copying but not actually put it in the iPod. They're videos but iTunes will not let me drag them onto the video folder...
    BUT...
If I create a new video playlist in the iPod it will allow me to drag it in there as if it were a normal, non-podcast video.
So that gets me part of the way there. Now, how can I put it back with the other podcasts from the same show? iTunes won't let me just drag it there from the video playlist.
    Thanks.

  • Podcasts no longer sync and remember position.  Any solutions?

Since installing Yosemite on one imac (older) and buying a new imac retina (using Yosemite) my podcasts no longer sync between devices.  Before Yosemite, if I played a podcast on my iPhone as soon as I opened my imac/itunes the podcast was set at where I left off.  It was great.
Now, it does not do this at all.  Is there some trick or a preference file to delete/start over or did they really disable this feature?
    Thanks.

In your subject heading you say the Podcasts do not sync. Are you saying they don't play +because they have not synced?+
If so, when you plug your iPod into your computer, check the settings on the Podcasts pane/tab. Are they still set the way you want them? Software upgrades have been know to cause these settings to be changed.

  • How do you remove unplayed podcasts in iTunes 11.1

How do you removed unplayed podcasts from iTunes 11.1?  The new version lists all of the available podcasts, including those that have already been played.  As a result it is necessary to scroll through very long lists of podcasts to see what is available on the next podcast.

What really cheeses me off here is that Apple isn't allowing users enough customization.  With each update of iTunes (and the OS and iOS) we're forced to give up something that worked well for the way we want to use the app and make do with fewer (and lamer) options.  If Apple keeps this up, they're going to start losing customers fast.  I mean if this isn't fixed soon, I'm pretty sure I'm going to give up on iTunes, and then I'll probably go ahead and get a Galaxy when I need to replace my iPhone.
What I don't understand about how they won't let users delete the list of available podcasts now is why?  How is this making it a better program?  I can understand that not all users are capable enough to right-click on a feed and select "Show all available episodes", so I can see why they want the complete list to be the default (and, surprise, it already was).  But to not give users the option to delete that list?  It's inconsiderate because it makes navigating feeds with a large back catalogue really frustrating.  I'm flabbergasted that no one at Apple considered all the podcast feeds that keep hundreds of episodes available when they removed this feature.  It smacks of rank incompetence.
What improvement were they trying to make here anyway?  There was nothing wrong to my mind about how podcasts were managed in previous versions.  Whatever improvement they were trying to make here, they should have realized that many users would at least want the option to keep things the way they were.
And reverting to a previous version is no solution.  I can't sync my iPhone with the new iOS without this update, and (while I do have some issues--specifically how you can't play podcasts in the Music app anymore) I do like the new iOS.

  • How do you create a podcast playlist and get all unplayed podcasts copied to it?

How do you create a podcast playlist and get all unplayed podcasts copied to it?

Creat a Smart Playlist in iTunes (File -> New Smart Playlist) that looks like the following:
Once you have successfully done that you can set it up to sync to your iPod Shuffle from under the Shuffle's Podcast configuration tab/pane in iTunes.

  • Manually Transfer Podcasts - Don't Show Up in iPod "Podcast" Area

Here's the scenario. My wife and I each have iPod Shuffles for use at the gym, etc... We each have our own computer and different iTunes libraries. For our anniversary, I bought her (us) an 80gb w/video. The thought was that we'd share both of our music libraries here along with videos/podcasts for us to use when we traveled (separately or together).
I've found that the best/easiest way for us to manage the iPod's library is to set it up for manual management. This was after doing a lot of searching forums on managing between two computers... unless that's changed, then no worries there.
My wife took a trip a couple of months ago and downloaded some individual podcasts (not subscribing) into her computer, from iTunes, and transferred them into the 80gb iPod for watching on the plane. They're in the Podcast section as expected. I'm taking a trip in a week and downloaded some additional podcasts from iTunes, and also did not subscribe to them. I did a drag and drop into the 80gb, but I couldn't find them looking through iTunes and through the iPod itself - except through the recently added files folder.
The only place I can find them is in the "Recently Added" folder, but that won't last long. So now that I've "found" the podcasts, how do I get them libraried (is that a real word?) into my Podcast section of my iPod? They do reside in the Podcast section of the iTunes program. I have version 7.2.0.35 of iTunes if that matters.
    Thanks for any help.

I don't know if this will help, but I was experiencing the same problem. Searching the discussions didn't help other than to confirm that I was not alone. So, I started poking around.
    Background
I had been manually copying podcasts to iPod. Noticed this weekend new podcasts weren't showing up under podcasts, some did show up under music, and videos weren't showing up at all.
    My Solution:
selected iPod device. Selected Podcasts. Selected sync. (wasn't syncing before). choose a couple podcasts to sync. Clicked apply. podcasts synced. wiped out all my existing podcasts but the new ones showed up. Still no videos though. Chose Movies. chose sync. Got message something like "The iPod "<my iPod>" is synced with another iTunes Library. Do you want to erase this iPod and sync with this iTunes library." I chose no (cancel), because I didn't want to wipe everything out without thinking about it.
Now Podcasts and videos show up on the iPod.
    Hope this helps.

  • Podcasts won't sync to the podcast portion of the built in Music App on my iPod Touch.  How do I fix this?

Ever since I downloaded the new Apple Podcast App my Podcasts that I subscribe to in iTunes have not worked correctly.   I have deleted the Apple Podcast App because it does not work well and I'd rather have the functionality with Podcasts that the sync from iTunes to the built in Music App has.  However, now I can't get the podcasts I subscribe to to show up in the original app.  My iTunes says that all the podcasts are being synced and it is checked to sync them and even the data storage indicator bar at the bottom shows the amount of space being taken up as if the podcasts did sync but when I go into my iPod Touch in the music app they are not there.  How do I fix this?  Thanks!

What you're really doing is trying to create a new icloud account using an ID that is not currently associated with a user's account.  A device can only do this a fixed number of times (3 or 5, don't remember), after which you must use a different device or computer to create the account.
