"Older version of quicktime could not be removed."

Basically I'm missing some kind of install file which prevents me from updating Quicktime (and thusly, iTunes).. It's fairly annoying since I can't use iTunes with my friends' newer iPods to put music on it.
Any suggestions? It's been an ongoing problem and I have no idea what to do about it. I tried searching for the file specified (quicktime.msi i think).. but nowhere to be found on my computer.

If it's talking about a missing QuickTime.msi, let's try the following procedure.
Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility.
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
Run the Utility (Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up), find any QuickTime entries in the list of programs that appear in CleanUp, select the QuickTime entries, and then click “Remove”.
Next, we’ll manually remove leftover program files and folders.
1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
3. Open Program Files.
4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx. (If “Hide filename extensions for known file types” is enabled on the PC, then those two files will appear as “QuickTime” and QuickTimeVR”.)
7. Restart your computer.
Now try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Older version of quicktime can not be removed....what do I need to do?

I have a dell, with windows xp. I had to install new hard drive, but I guess remnants of the old quicktime are still lurking, and it won't let me uninstall and reinstall. What do I need to do?

I have a Windows Vista and whenever I try and download the new itunes, I get an error message (Error code 2330). I managed to delete itunes, but it's Quick Time that's causing the most problems--something about file sv.lproj being corrupted. Do you know what that means and how to fix it?
The 2330 is usually related to damaged program files interrupting the install of the new version. (The installer goes to remove the existing program files before putting in the new ones, hits the damage, and then everything turns to custard.)
The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive or whichever drive you've got your QuickTime program files installed on. Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.
You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?
If not, let us know the precise location of the sv.lroj file or folder that is being mentioned in the error message. (There's a whole bunch of different ones in the QuickTime program files.)

  • "The older version of itunes could not be removed"

This is the error message I receive. I've already tried going to start->control panel->add/remove programs. Same error message. However, it removed enough of the old itunes that I cannot run either the new version OR the old version.

okay. with that one, let's try the following procedure.
first, head into your Add/Remove programs and uninstall your QuickTime. if it goes, good. if it doesn't, we'll just attend to it when we attend to itunes.
next, download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. use it to clear any existing itunes and/or QuickTime installation configuration information from the PC.

  • The older version of Bonjour can not be removed

When installing Itunes, the following error messages appear:
    1) The older version of Bonjour can not be removed. Contact your technical support group.
    2) Itunes installation has been interrupted, please try again later (or something similar).
As a home user, I have no technical support group so I am turning to you, discussion followers, for assistance. I removed Quicktime, Itunes, Bonjour, and all other apple software according to the removing and reinstalling Itunes article. I used CCleaner to remove traces of the programs in the registry. When reinstalling, Quicktime installs successfully, but Itunes installation stops with the error messages above. I have deleted the temp folder, updated windows, used selected startup before installing, and all attempts end the same way. I'm not sure why I am getting this error, when Bonjour is not on my system to begin with. I appreciate any advice you can offer.

    1) The older version of Bonjour can not be removed. Contact your technical support group.
Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Bonjour entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try installing iTunes again. Does the install go through properly now?
(If you do find a clean download site for the correct version of CleanUp, please don't tell me where it is. Without wishing to sound paranoid (although I grant it does sound paranoid), there is a non-zero chance that posting links to download locations for the utility here at Discussions leads to that download location being shut down.)

  • An older version of Apple Software Update could not be removed

when trying to upgrade to itunes 8 i get an error saying "An older version of Apple Software Update could not be removed. Contact your technical support group."

Polydorus, you just saved me a lot of (additional) heartburn. I had to do a system restore to rid myself of a virus, and afterwards, somehow all my Apple products entered a state of suspended animation - they were neither there nor not there. They were still listed in the programs and all the shortcuts remained, but clicking the icons led to an error message stating the programs were gone. I couldn't do a reinstall because it said an older version could not be removed, yet I couldn't uninstall them via the Add/Remove program function - "the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable". Delving further, I was told "the installation source for this product is not available. verify that the source exists and that you can access it." I was nearly apoplectic.
Your direction to use Windows Install Clean Up worked perfectly. iTunes et al are back and all my songs are right where I left them.
    I am so grateful.

    Are you on Windows?
I've seen one of the apple software updates corrupt my Quicktime install.
Uninstalling it, or iTunes, or both, then redownloading it from apple and re-installing fixed the problem. You can download Quicktime independently of iTunes, but you can't get iTunes without quicktime. Make sure both are gone from Add/Remove programs.
I would give that a shot.

  • "the older version of quicktime cannot be removed. Contact your technical s

I keep getting an error "the older version of quicktime cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group." No I have removed all od copies of Quick time and used Windows Install Clean Up and tried to repair Quick Time and stil can not install the latest version. Plus now Itunes is not working. Any thoughts.

The problem with reinstalls or upgrades saying a previous version is installed when one isn't sounds familiar. I couldn't get 7.2 to install correctly, so I tried reinstalling 7.1.5. Received an error message saying I couldn't because a newer version was already installed. I tried using the Windows Uninstaller Cleaner someone here posted a link for to solve the problem. I found an entry for 7.1.5 with no application name (which it should have)and deleted it, but that still didn't solve the problem. What I found interesting was that I edited the registry to remove all references to QT (and there are hundreds of them). That still didn't solved the problem. I would like to know where it gets that info about what's been installed previously. It just occurred to me that they may have planted a cookie. I'll check. If you find out where the info on previous installs is hidden post it.
