Olympus DSS-330

When I attempt to open the software that comes with this digital recorder.I get an error message "failed to allocate memory for the voice file" .
I ma using the latest version 6.02 that is available for the DSS-330.
Olympus was absolutely no help and referred me to Apple because they feel it to be a OS software problem. any suggestions or help will be greatly appreciated

Edwin, First Welcome to the Discussions.
Don't misunderstand.It is in fact the periphials responsability to furnish the correct drivers for the Operating systems they want there product to work on.
You will find as a general rule they sometimes could care less after you or I have purchased there product.
If the digital recorder came with a cd with the correct drivers on it it should install on your machine, however, you may have to go to there web site and see if they offer any updates or upgrades to there product and your correct Operating System......Cheers...Don

Olympus DS-330 and Lion

Anyone know of third-party solution that will allow downloads from Olympus DS-330 digital voice recorder into Lion? I upgraded my Olympus DSS player to work with Lion, but the software doesn't recognize the recorder. Olympus says the DS-330 won't work with Lion. So I can play my previously recorded files. But I can't download any new files into the computer running Lion. Any ideas? Thanks!

They mention something here about an update for Lion. I don't know if this has anything to do with your player.

Maybe somebody else will know of something but I would not hold out too much hope. There isn't too much incentive for anybody to write software (especially Mac) for an older player, and one of the things about upgrading to newer systems is having to leave old items behind. With Apple itself any support for things older than roughly four years is lucky. People who really want to stretch things out try to find something that is about 4 years old that can still run older systems for backward compatibility, but also run new systems (perhaps under dual boot settings) to try to keep up for a while.

Olympus DSS player standard software

Hi
Does anyone know whether Olympus DSS player standard software is compatible with Mavericks? The 'DSS player lite' software is NOT supported. Olympus are being less than helpful about the 'standard' software! Thanks.

Edwin, First Welcome to the Discussions.
Don't misunderstand.It is in fact the periphials responsability to furnish the correct drivers for the Operating systems they want there product to work on.
You will find as a general rule they sometimes could care less after you or I have purchased there product.
If the digital recorder came with a cd with the correct drivers on it it should install on your machine, however, you may have to go to there web site and see if they offer any updates or upgrades to there product and your correct Operating System......Cheers...Don

Olympus E-330

I read that Aperture supports the raw files of the Olympus E-300. Does anybody know if it supports also the E-330?

I am really angry. On one side Aperture would deserve to be buried, as you say, on the other I really hope is not going to happen since I invested a lot of money in the software and in a new MacBook Pro to have the software running at a decent speed. However, I have a Sony R1, which is not supported by Aperture. I was thinking of buying the E-330, but is not supported either. I don't really understand why it would be such a big deal to support more cameras. How can ACR keep up with all the new cameras that come up on the market? I was hoping that the Aperture update would have solved most of these compatibility issues, but what did they do? They expanded the support to cameras that are already history, like the Leica Digilux 2!

Itunes & olympus DSS format...a CHALLENGE?

here is a difficult one...
I want to use a voice recorder machine for conducting all our interviews in our research lab and I was to use iTunes as the main file management/player library etc. application...I want to do this for obvious reasons...itunes is the best player out there + plus we can sync all our interviews with all the wonderful ipods out there...
but here is the problem...
the best voice recorders come from Olympus and in their most advanced players they use their own proprietary format .dss which I doubt itunes would be able to read and convert. How do I get around this? I could probably turn the .dss file into a .wav file from the olympus software and then import it in itunes and convert it to mp3. But it's all getting too long as a process - particularly for other users of this system who would not be so keen to do all this.
Any ideas? Would anybody know of any itunes pluggins that would read .dss files? Someone must have a similar situation in mind...

good timing...problem solved today.
Sweetest solution:
1. You buy the WS-200s (best prices from Speakit.info great ppl, service, and prices)
this connects via USB (like a suffle) and it records in supergreat quality. It records in WMA format but no need to worry about this. You plug in the recorder in the USB port, the computer reads that as a removable drive, and you add the file via iTunes which converts it automatically into a aac file (make sure you specify the settings you want).
I would stay away from the DS series as the dss file is not that great unless you want all the extra functionalities it comes with. You would have to use special olympus software to convert it into wav and then to import it into itunes to compress it again in a format that is usable all the way around.
I have testest several olympus devices from the low end VC series (which records in wav) all the way up to DSS. Nothing can beat the WS-200s in any way (funnilly enough the low end VC series have better speakers - and the recording quality is really really good but you miss all the important stuff that you get with the WS one)
If anyone can find a better solution I am up for the challenge...but I very much doubt this will ever happen, at least with the current devices that exist at the moment.
If a shuffle could record then it would have been the WS-200s - but I doubt this will ever happen. WS-200s comes with "only" 128mb of ram but that's more than plenty for recording (highest stereo quality records up to 4-5 hours - and lowest up to 55 hours) for my purposes the highest is the best.
hope this helps...it's a good summary of an ongoing effort to built the best recording solution.

How can I convert a DSS dictation file to mp3?

Am new to using a Mac and my last place of work I used a PC with Speechexec dictation software. I need to convert some of the old dictation files to play on either QuickTime or iTunes etc. Anyone any idea?

I would like to validate and recommend the solution mentioned by Mark Dachille. I, too, have conducted extensive Google searches to find software which can convert Olympus DSS audio-formatted files to mp3, only to discover that there is no such animal out there. NCH Software offers Switch, but if you check out the list of formats supported by Switch, you will learn that while Switch is supported for Windows, Switch is incapable of converting Olympus's proprietary DSS audio files to any other audio format. Any attempt to do so will reveal a message that the file is empty, no data is found, etc. But if the Finder shows that your DSS does have data, then all Switch is saying, in effect, is: "Hey, I can't see anything in this file," which would be a more honest and a more accurate message, instead of using misleading language about the file itself.
(As a related issue, which I will not elaborate upon here, I have a problem with NCH Software. I detest their software upgrading policy; I find their technical software abominable; and I caught them lying in a recent Google search, where their AdWord at the top of the page alleges that Switch "Easily convert dss audio dictations to wav or mp3 on a PC or Mac. Works on Windows and Mac." Don't believe this marketing hype. It is a blatant lie. I wrote them a letter, and I published it as an open letter in the record for Switch at MacUpdate.com, for anyone wanting further details.)
As far as converting DSS files to mp3, I have found no direct route. As Mark points out, the most elegant option is to use the Olympus DSS Player software. Fortunately, version 7.5 works with Mavericks; I just tested it out once again to confirm that. The Olympus web site provides downloads to the previous versions of DSS Player, which accompanied the purchase of an Olympus recorder, but it may not allow downloading of the original application itself to which you can apply those upgrades. However, if you do a deep Google search, you may get lucky and locate the original application.
Once in DSS Player, you import your DSS file(s). After they are listed in file window, you can export them to AIFF files. From there, you can either use Switch or any other audio converter which can convert AIFF files to mp3 files.
I happen to use Switch, because I bought a license years ago, and it does the job quite well, while also working in batch mode to convert many files at one go. But that does mean I recommend buying Switch, for the reasons I discuss in my comments at MacUpdate.com. Be careful dealing with this software company: have your eyes open before you purchase.
NCH Software has had years in which to empower Switch to work on the Mac, but they either cannot code the program to do this, or they do not want to. Either way, they should not lie about saying their program CAN do in their Goggle AdWord, while admitting on their website, if you probe before you buy, that Switch can NOT convert DSS to mp3 after all. I have a bias against liars.
I find it interesting that NCH Software is not above slamming Olympus for having developed, in NCH's opinion, an inferior audio format for recording dictation. Whether that is true or not, I cannot comment for it is a technical matter beyond my expertise. However, I can say that setting your Olympus recorder (in my case, model DS-2, which has worked flawlessly for me for years), allows you to record many more messages before the storage capacity (of about 68 MB on my device) is reached. So, there is an incentive, in my case, to use DSS on the device, but to convert the source DSS files later on to usable formats on my Mac.
My calculations indicate that when you convert a DSS file to an AIFF file via the DSS Player, your file size will increase about 13 times, meaning that a 1 MB DSS file will convert to a 13 MB AIFF file. Converting that AIFF file via Switch reduces that file to about 9 MB, which means that an mp3 file is about 9 times as large as an original DSS file. The vast difference in the file size allows me to record up to 22 hours at DSS (at 200 - 3,000 Hz) vs 1 hour at Stereo High Quality mode, which delivers an AIFF file (at 100 - 17,000 Hz).
I like being able to choose the quality settings, and I like the ability to call upon the DSS setting to record long conversations, interviews, or dictation, without fretting that I will run out of storage space. The ability to convert those DSS files, via the DSS Player, to AIFF, then to mp3 gives me the flexibility of choice.
The key to the whole process of converting DSS files to other audio formats is the Olympus DSS Player software: it is the essential intermediate step for a Mac user, without which you are stuck, unless you want to run the Windows version of Switch. I don't.

Voice recorder that's OSX compat.?

I know this question has come up before, but I haven't found an answer to my question.
I use an Olympus DS-330 voice recorder and it's Mac-compatible. It's got a limit, set to high-quality, of 4 hours or so, which isn't enough. It looks as though Olympus has basically abandoned Mac. (My recorder is four years old.)
I don't own an iPod and it seems like overkill for my purposes. Anyone have any recommendations for a Mac-compatible voice recorder that will record 8 hours on high-quality settings, and that's in the $150 and under range?

I switched this from "answered" because I'd like to hear more. Anyone have experience with the new Olympus OSX-compat. recorders, or other good Mac-compatible recorders?
I'm a reporter, so I'd especially like to hear how they work in that context -- one on one interviews, small groups w/ambient noise.
The DS-2 and WS-300M seem likely choices, but is the OSX integration smooth and useful? Olympus seems to have moved from using its proprietary DSS player to Windows media. Can you slow down playback on that?
Any other recorders worth using? I want at least 8-10 on a high-quality setting.

Which digital recorder works with a Mac Mini?

Has anybody bought a Digital Recorded that can attach ti a Mac Mini? I've read up on the Olympus and Sony ones, but it seems none of them work with a Mac ? Do any of these recorders attach to a Mac through a USB ??? directly to a Mac ???

Olympus' DS-330 connects via the USB port, and works for me...But I believe it's a discontinued model. Olympus posts their instruction manuals online!

Downloaded torch - then uninstalled it, now iphoto won't open Error 10810

Hi there,
I downloaded torch from the web to view a video. It did not work so I uninstalled torch again. Through that I lost Olympus DSS Player software, Firefox, and iphoto won't open. I get the error code 10810.
Can anyone please help me?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Hi, We've an issue with this update that it messes up our dictation software "Olympus DSS Pro R4" and it won't work. But when we remove this update it works fine but removing this update removes IE 10 as well. So I've got two questions
1. Would removing this update have any security implications?
2. Is there a way around to install IE 10 without this update?

Transcription software with foot pedal control

Anybody know if Olympus DSS Transcription machine will work on Leopard? I do medical transcription and use the Olympus AS-3000 transcription kit with foot pedal. It is working fine with Tiger but I just got a new 24 inch IMac with Leopard ready to install and I want to make sure it will work.... any ideas? I need to be able to use the foot pedal when transcribing downloaded DSS files. Thanks

Does it work with OSX 10.5 ? The site says up to 10.4.
I know it says it works with iTunes but I don't understand the itunes plugin info on their site. The only option seems to be Pause back time. I understand this to mean that it causes the file to rewind a certain amount when you lift your foot off the pedal. How would this work with playing songs? I wouldn't want to have to keep my foot on the pedal all the time. I was hoping for a 1 click starts file, next click stops it kind of solution.

Olympus DS-2300 DSS Player software OSX Compatibility

I purchased an Olympus DS-2300 digital voice recorder in part because of its Mac "compatibility".
The recorder itself works great. However, the software does not work correctly with Tiger and neither does the DSS Player Plus software (extra charge for that).
Olympus tech support tried to say that it is an operating system problem, as if it was Apple's problem. However, they finally admitted their 6.0.4 software does not work correctly with most installations of 10.4 (Tiger). I'm running 10.4.3 on my iBook G4.
Olympus says they don't know when the DSS Player software will be updated to work with Tiger.
So, their statement of PC/MAC compatibility is not exactly correct (any more).
About the only thing the software will do on the Mac is play the DSS file. Most everything else in the manual related to the DSS Player does not work. The download functions do not work, you cannot update anything on the recorder itself from the Mac. The DSS Player plus file split function does not work...it causes the software to crash.
The player also does not support the new, larger M type XD cards (such as 1GB). However, there is a firmware update which will allow the use of the 1GB cards. The update has to be run from a PC however. You cannot update the firmware from a Mac.
Anyone else found these compatibility issues with Olympus? There must have been some level of commitment to the Mac that they went as far as they did. I wonder if they are going to update their software ????

Maybe somebody else will know of something but I would not hold out too much hope. There isn't too much incentive for anybody to write software (especially Mac) for an older player, and one of the things about upgrading to newer systems is having to leave old items behind. With Apple itself any support for things older than roughly four years is lucky. People who really want to stretch things out try to find something that is about 4 years old that can still run older systems for backward compatibility, but also run new systems (perhaps under dual boot settings) to try to keep up for a while.

.orf files won't open in CS2 (Olympus E-3)

I recently purchased an Olympus E-3 (previously owned E-330). I use CS2 and Windows XP Media. I am new to shooting RAW images and just got back from a trip where I shot RAW (.ORF) images.
I updated my DNG converter (Tried both 3.7 and 4.5) and Camera Raw to 3.7 (as that is the highest level supported by CS2). The list of supported cameras include the E-3. But I still get the error message that it can't complete your request because "it is not the right kind of document."
I try to use the DNG Converter, click on convert and get a message there was an "error parsing the image." So I am not able to convert the .orf files to .dng so I can open in ACR as instructed.
Since the E-3 should be supported in Camera Raw according to the adobe website, why am I getting this error message? I really enjoy the flexibility of photoshop Camera Raw and wish to continue. I am able to open the .orf files in Olympus Master 2.0 so I believe the files to be intact.
I have confirmed that the DNG Converter.exe and the Camera Raw file is installed according the Adobe instructions (removed old one, installed new on in the correct folders-Checked and Double Checked.
I rebooted the computer after install. I am still able to open the .orf files from my E-330 in photoshop. So I don't think PS is configured incorrectly and that Camera Raw is functioning.
What is the best and easiest way to open these files in Photoshop? I am stuck with a ton of .ORF images that I cannot open. Please help!

Semantics I guess. What I was saying was that I was using the DNG Converter 4.5 (the latest version) and ACR 3.7 (latest version for CS2) and it was in the correct folder according to the instructions that are on the Adobe download instructions. However, I was still following the procedure of trying to convert the .orf file using the DNG Converter, but no success. And since I was unable to convert to .dng, I was unable to attempt to use ACR.
However, Good news.
Since I did get a response that someone using the same configuration of E-3 and CS2 had no problems converting to .dng, I decided to once again check versions, folders, etc. and then reboot. Now everything is working.
Now I can convert the ORF files to DNG using DNG Converter 4.5, and then open those in ACR 3.7! (Same files, same version, same folder).
Who knows! Operator error - maybe- but I swear I repeatedly check and rebooted last night. Maybe I just held my mouth correctly on this reboot.
Again thank you for all your help. I just hope this helps someone else if they have the same issue. Mysteries...
