Olympus E-3 Users Initial Experiences

Now that Apple has finally released an update that covers the E-3 without DNG conversion, I'm curious as to initial and ongoing impressions. I'm still using Lightroom, but is Aperture 2 worth consideration?

I agree. I have been doing the .dng conversion for several months and am impressed by how much better the native RAW engine works; more detail, richer colors and better overall image quality. Apple has, IMO, done an excellent job with this. And, the new tools are quite good. As always, it can help you make huge savings in workflow time...
Get the trial...see for yourself. good luck with your decision.
cheers,
david

It's either hand right or left.
I have the same issue myself.  Not sure if it's b/c my fingers are too big or if I'm really missed the letter on the keyboard.

  • What should end-users initially do in BPC system?

Hi: I am seeking some guidance here. My client wants to provide a small set of end-users access to the BPC sandbox system. These users are absolutely new to BPC, haven't had any training but use Excel regularly for their analytical & planning needs. The idea is to have them gain some familiarity with the look-and-feel of BPC for financial reporting purposes and assess how well it could serve as the financial report writing tool. It is a tall order for folks who have no experience with BPC but that's the approach. Can you please advice on what activities these users should and can realistically carry out that will not only give them a good overview but also help provide meaningful feedback on the product? (Data will be loaded in the sandbox and formal training will be provided soon but this question relates to the period prior to training).
Full points will be awarded to all the helpful answers.
    Thank you very much,
    Jon

    Hello,
I have exactly same situation.  One of my prospective customers is going to start small project to evaltuate BPC for their planning tool, and requires small sandbox machine.
All replies above are useful information, also I think it is also important to consider your customer's requirement and expectation for better consulting service.
I would like to add 2 things about this topic.
    1: current Excel spreadsheets
If your customer uses tons of Excel sheets for planning process, it might be great to show the customer utilizing current Excel spread sheet by importing those to BPC and put some BPC functions like EvSND.  Then the cusomter would understand BPC is great application that enable to utilize existing Excel sheets easily.  I had some presales activities, and that seems to impress sereral prospective customers.
2: how to build sandbox machine
We're planning to build sandbox with virtual environment called "VMware".  The customer prepares just one stand alone note PC.  Then consultants make VMware files with VMware Workstation.  With VM, it is possible to make one set of files that includes OS, SQL Server, MS-Office, and BPC.  Everything is put into one file, and do not set up client server system.  I think you have to purchase VMware Workstation, but VMware Server might be free and has same functions.  The bad thing is that VM file is super heavy, I say 15GB in my teams' machine as average.  Also the note PC should be high-spec one.
I do not have much information to answer your question.  I hope that comment would help you.  If you have further question, please feel free to ask me.

  • Good initial experiences with 20" (iSight)iMac

I received my replacement 20" iMac(iSight). Apple graciously decided to replace it for my 20" 2.0 iMac that was having quite a few issues. It is very quiet. Must be a much better design to allow cooling to the innards or removing heat from them. The iSight is pretty cool even though I don't really see much use of it for me. It is a nice option to have just in case. Front Row is neat. A 30" iMac with cable hookups and TV tuner would definitely make a great home entertainment option. The computer overall seems quite a bit faster. So far this is back to being an enjoyable Mac experience as were our first four Macs. Let's pray that Apple doesn't have any more oddities hamper the Mac's superiority in computing.

Initially it started as eternal spinning wheel of death. Apple tech said to buy DiskWarrior. I did. It worked for about a day. Tech then said to replace HD. They shipped to me and I did. It worked for a couple of days. Got to the point we couldn't do hardly anything without wheel that wouldn't stop without a forced restart. I'm not a techie but I think it may have been heat related or faulty logic board. Called tech and said something had to be done. Tech transferred to Customer Relations. They agreed to on-site repair. Parts were delayed repeatedly. When I contacted CR he said Apple deemed the length of wait unacceptable so they offered to replace with new iMac of same dimensions. Before it could ship Apple came out with iSight iMac. What does ALS stand for?

  • How to change users' initial page based on a condition

I'm using SSO on my application, and have two types of users who will be logging on - I want one set (admins) to go straight to one page, and the other set (users) to go to a another page after logging in. These two sets of users are stored in the database, so I can want to use that to check against.
I get the impression this would be easy enough if my users went via the 101-login page, but as I'm using SSO I don't think they do. I can change the default starting page, with the home link setting in the application's security attributes, but you can only set one of those.
I don't mind having it all default to one page, and then redirect away from that if the username meets a particular condition, but can't see how I can do that.
Can anyone suggest how I can work this to achieve what I need?

    Tim,
First I would create a HOME_PAGE application item. Then I would create an application computation on new instance that sets that item accordingly. something like this:
    with user_table as(
select 'TIM' user_name, 'ADMIN' user_role from dual
    select case
               when exists(select *
                             from user_table
                            where user_name = :APP_USER
                              and user_role = 'ADMIN')
               then
                  102
               else
                  103
          end
from user_tableI would make a landing page all people go to. Page 150. On that page i would make a branch before header which references your HOME_PAGE application item.

  • A new Encore user's experience.

Being as this is a louge this might be a place to share.
First, I am not a pro, but I have been using Premiere since 4.2 to produce simple teaching videos and over time have gotten to where I have done more fun stuff and even a couple of events, for money even.  Until recently I created my DVDs using Sony DVD Architech.
So all week I've been editing video from a race held near here recently (motorsports, 24 Hours of LeMons) where I attended with a team with the idea of getting photos and video and putting together something the team and friends would enjoy.  I got some good in-car video, and some not so good, but that's another matter.
For this project I decided to finally try using Encore to create the DVD.  The Sony software didn't do Blu-Ray and I wanted to try that, too.  So I start up Encore and when it finally loaded I started a project in the usual Adobe style then was presented with a screen I simply could not figure out.  I poked around trying to figure out what the basic procedure was and found the "import" function, tried to import and mgep file, and I got my first blue screen ever on this system.
Rebooted, and restarted Encore, I explored more on my own.  I can usually figure out these things on my own.  I explored the menus and buttons, and figured out that an asset was probably anything I wanted to put on the DVD.  Other than that I was pretty much stuck.  I imported another mpeg file and that worked, but I finally gave up and decided to try "Help".  That took me to the Adobe site, and that to the Lynda tutorials, which were just what I needed.  I went through them one-by-one and they answered most of my questions.  They were excellent.  Quick, clear, and just the right amount of detail for a tutorial.  Adobe did good with that one.
With Lynda's help I was off and running.  I figured out how to create menu templates by examining the ones that came with Encore and I figured out how to change the order and other settings for each button.  Everything was going smoothly now.  I had a project that had a menu and three videos.  The preview feature was also working great.  But, the highlight I used for my buttons is a green dot that has an inner shadow.  In preview I only get a green dot.  No shadow.  Later on the DVD itself, same thing.  I later learend by reading in these forums that that is the fault of the DVD player.
I still had room for one more button, and I still had lots of photos I had not used, so I tried the slide show feature.  It looked like it would a good job just showing photos, and for this project I thought it would be a nice little extra.  I know that some people here consider it to be a comsumer gimick and just seeing it in Encore made me think the same thing, as if Adobe wanted to be able to match the features of (much) lesser DVD authoring programs.  No matter.  I'd also learn, by experience that this feature still needs a little work.  Again, I am not a pro, so if I notice something that needs fixing it must really scream out at you guys and gals.
It was pretty easy to import my photos and add them to the slide show, but I soon learned that 99 photos is the max for a slide show.  I suppose that is OK.  Next, I learned that the shortest time I could display a slide is about 1.2 seconds.  I was hpoing to be able to run through some of my photos quickly to simuate a stop-action sequence for those times when I just held the shutter release button and snapped away at the action, such as a car spinning off into the dirt.  It could be that this limit is due to the cross-fade transitions I had set as the slide show's default transition.  I'll try it again later without transitions to see what happens.
Adding and removing slides turned out to be a real pain.  When addidng slides in mass I'd get an error saying there was something wrong with a slide.  I forget what the other errors were, but I got a lot of them.  They were probably related to the number of slides I was placing in the timeline, over 99 total.  But besides the errors, Encore really slowed down.  It took maybe 10-15 minutes for it to get back to normal, or just about how long it took me to give up and go off and fold laundry.  So then I tried to delete some slides and that took for ever, especially if the slide was near the beginning of the show.  I figure Encode must be reprocessing the whole show somehwow.  But after these problems something seemd to be wrong with Encore.  It was slow when doing anything.  I closed it and started it up again.  It was all better again.
In previews the slide show looked good, but I realized that I needed to resize the photos.  I did this in Photoshop for a handful then came back to Encore, expecting it to update itself, seeing as assets like these are external to the Encore project itself, but that didn't happen.  If I edited a video and came back to Premiere it would re-import the video.  Apparently this doesn't happen in the slide show.  I deleted the slide show and started again.  At least it is easy to set up new slide shows, except as noted above.
The do-over worked.  The slide show looked good.
I burned a DVD and the results were excellent, except for, again, the slide show.  The show ran OK, but at the end of each transition there was a little flicker, more like a contrast glitch.  Annoying, and it has to be fixed or else the slide show feature will be useless, even for me, except for personal use.
Other than that, all was good.  I edited video and Encore reimported it and the burn was successful and it looked great, well, on my analog TV.  I still don't have digital as I canceld cable and quit watching TV nearly 2 years ago.  But it was working, minor changes were easily handled, etc.
I then tried the Flash feature, and it worked well, except that the video frame is not centered (too far to the right).  The HTML code was simple enough.  The video plays in a table whose width is 99% of the screen the cell justification is centered.  I'm sure I could deal with that in my own pages.  But, a bigger problem, again involving the slide show.  The VCR controls would pop up at the start, or end, of each slide, and then would disappear again on its own.  Again, the slide show is a nice feature but I can't use it if the controls are going to be going up and down throughout the show.
I also exported an image and will be trying that out later.  Being able to create an image for the DVD is nice.  It means I won't have to use Encode for future burns, and I might have trouble keeping up with the 80 GB of files I have in this project.
    Mike

    Thanks for reporting.
I'm one of those folk, who shies away from SlideShow in En, choosing to do that in PrPro and then Exporting a DV-AVI.
Though this is not a "technical" forum, I'll risk Jeff & Neil's wrath and throw out one comment. If your still images were not resized to your Project's Frame Size, say 720 x 480, PAR = 1.22 (for NTSC 16:9 in this example), you are asking the program to downsize all of your 99 stills. That WILL slow things to a crawl. Also, I feel that resizing in Photoshop, rather than En, or PrPro, will give you better results. This is a time, where bigger is not better. If you redo, or do a similar Project, explore resizing the stills in PS first, and then Importing those. This ARTICLE might give you some tips on automating the resizing, prior to Import.
OK, enough of that technical drivel. Thanks again for sharing!

  • New TM user: initial back-up plan

Hi. I’m going to be using TM for the first time to back up my son’s Digital Performer music project files. He keeps all of these files, which are very large, on a 1Tbyte internal drive called “Projects,” which is separate from his main Mac HD. My plan is to use TM to back up “Projects” to a 2 Tbyte external hard drive, excluding the main hard drive and all the other back-up drives he’s using. My thinking here is that TM requires a lot of space and that the less I’m backing up the better. I should also mention that both the main HD and “Projects” are regularly backed up to other external hard drives using Super Duper. My questions are: 1) is this doable—that is, can I exclude all the other drives, including the main HD and 2) does this seem like the best back-up plan or would there be some advantage in including the main HD in the back up. Thanks for any advice on this, and my apologies if this has been already covered in this forum.

Yes, that's "doable." See #10 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), if you're not sure how to exclude things.
Whether it's the best strategy isn't a simple question, though.
Usually, folks back up their OSX drive, and perhaps others, with Time Machine, and back up others with a different app, such as CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, run much less often.
It depends partly on how often things on various drives change, and how important it is to have hourly backups.
For example, your OSX drive usually has lots of changes; preferences, browser history and bookmarks, email, and things like documents you're actively working on. There, the hourly backups mean if you accidentally change or delete the wrong file (such as "Save" instead of "Save As"), or something suddenly turns up corrupted, you have a good chance of finding one or more recent versions in your backups.
Things that don't change too often, or where the intermediate versions aren't important, you may not want to back up all that often, and maybe not even worry about prior versions. (CCC can keep prior versions; I don't know if SD can.)
When calculating space requirements for Time Machine, what's important is the amount of data it's backing-up, not necessarily the total capacity of the drive(s), but do allow for growth. Second most important is how often large things change. Thus you may have room on the 2 TB drive to keep backups of both the internal HD and the external for many months.
I suspect you've got it covered, but I always recommend keeping secondary backups. See #27 in the FAQ for some suggestions.

  • Olympus E-1 users: How are your conversions?

I just bought Aperture for use with my Olympus E-1 RAW files. The Aperture default conversions really aren't bad, but just aren't as "photo-like" as camera jpegs from the E-1. In particular, I think the Aperture defaults have a magenta color shift.
Anyone else have an opinion? I would be willing to share files to demonstrate what I am talking about, but I don't think I can post them to this forum.

With version 1.1 the conversions are better but still have a hi-tech moire pattern to them in places (especially when the image is sharpened). (kind of like faint circuit boards) Apparently they do not print but I can see them on the monitor.
The early version of Aperture was so bad it was unusable. As for the colour shift have not noticed yet. The E1 is not quite compatable with Aperture unfortunately but hopefully will get better soon. The program offers a lot of other possibilites and advantages.
The best conversion I think are still with Olympus Studio and of course you can shoot right into the computer with it. The Mac version of Studio is not Universal so it does not tether with any of the Intel MAcs yet. I have my MAc Book Pro set up as a dual boot and am using the Studio program with Windows XP for now.

  • User Initiated Remote Control - Behind NAT

I must be missing something. I am try to allow a laptop to request a
remote control session when it is disconnected from the network. When I
right-click on the remote management agent the option to request a
session is greyed out. Our user and workstation policy allow for the
user requested session and the ability to accept connections accross
NAT/Proxy. Assigning a password to the remote management agent also does
    not help. Any ideas?

I keep seeing that if a machine is behind a NAT'd firewall, like home for
instance, the user should be able to click on the Remote Management icon
and select Request Session. If the machine is on the local network, all RC
functions are fine. As soon as it's disconnected and behind a home
firewall or not even that, connected via dial-up to the net these options
go away. I have logged into the middle-tier via these methods and that
produces no change in my remote control options.
The error logs indicate that the workstation is not authenticated, which is
obvious, and that neither policies will be active.
    Hope that helps...

I need to know whether there is a way to check if a user ever used its voice mail box from unity connection.
    Thanks for help!

    Hi there,
There is a perfect tool for this type of report. We have used this to search for the same "setup" info.
    Check the  "Set for First Time Enrollment" and "Voice name Recorded";
Connection  User Data Dump (CUDD) Tool
The Connection User Data Dump (CUDD) is a  Windows-based remote database administration tool available on the Cisco  Unity Tools website. CUDD allows you to export specific information  about users to a file that can be viewed or imported into another  application, such as a database utility or Microsoft Excel. When the  data is exported, the tool automatically creates a header row that lists  the data type found in each column of the output, for ease of import  into other programs.
    The tool is available from the "Superb" Unity  Tools site;

  • MapKit - User initiated drawing

    Hi all,
I'm investigating MapKit for an upcoming project. I've found quite a few ways to programmatically draw points, lines, polygons, etc. The one thing I'm having trouble finding is how to allow a user to draw a line or polygon by touching the map. My users want to zoom-in on their property and draw a boundary to represent the state of their land at a given time (typically once per year). Is this type of functionality supported by MapKit? Will this type of functionality be part of Apple's new mapping technology in iOS 6?
    Thanks ahead of any advice,

Thanks - I posted it on the server forum as well per your suggestion.
Do you know if browse mode will let the users restore to the volume that was backed up, opposed to their local desktop?
I'm not sure. you should try and see what happens. it might. also, when you enter TM interface, scroll back in time and select what you want to restore you can click on the "gears" action button in the toolbar and choose 'restore to". this will let you choose where you want to restore this TO. it can be any volume including a network one. although when I just tried it with a network volume it had strange results. i got an error -36 saying that there was some kind of problem restoring and yet it restored just fine.
I guess either would be an okay solution but ideally they could put the file back where it originally was.

  • Overall poor initial experience from Baltimore, MD

    Hey.
I'm a college student and I just moved into my apt for the year. About two weeks ago, I signed up for Verizon High Speed DSL. The first issue happened with the shipment of the free modem that was included for registering online.
When I registred, I included my apartment number and confirmed it a few times.
Verizon didn't include my apartment number for  UPS on the package. UPS couldn't deliver the package without this information, and the package ended up being held for pickup 40 miles away. I have no car and no time to go pick it up, so I called verizon to reship the package.
They agree, but I have noticed that the first package had a weight of 1.7 pounds and the package I recieved weighed 1.4 pounds... who knows what I missed out on because of Verizon's error? A better router? Anyone know?I will update when I check the model number on the router I DID receive.
So, my intial service ready date for over a week was set up as September 19th. I managed to get my modem and was all set up on Friday. There was a delay and my 'new' service ready date was today, the 21st.
Still nothing. I did, however, get a call from a verizon technician saying he would need to get in my apartment today to 'check the lines to the apartment'.
All good, except it was 9am and I had already gone to school.
I'm taking a day off work tomorrow to wait for a tech to come. If my service isn't up tomorrow I'm not using verizon again, for anything.

So, my connection was fine up until this past Friday.
I called because I had a very poor connection. My internet went out saturday. I was told I would be udpated on the sitaution today by phone or by SMS text. It's 3:05 pm, and nothing yet.
In addition to being charged 5 dollars for service that I did not have (because of the error in the service ready date), I now have no internet for 3 days within the first month of service.
If Veirzon doesn't contact me today about what's going on, I am cancelling my service and investigating alternatives. It's just not worth it anymore.

  • Experience Definitions - Change during a user's session

I'm attempting to change a user's experience definition during their session and I would like the new experience to appear during their session.
I am removing their ID from a default group via the server API, so now they hit the second experience definition rule. I would like to redirect them to their new experience and have them land on the default community. My issue is that that experience seems to be cached and I have to log them out and in manually before the new experience shows up. Any ideas of how I can do this programmatically?
Think of this like changing to a new skin on a website and not having the user log in and out for it to take affect.
    Thanks!

Could you please share the API that you have and you are using to add/remove default group?
I have a problem where I have multiple groups/Experice Definitions assign to that user and I was wondering how could a select a default.
