Olympus E-M1 files and Lr 5.3rc

Good to see the very bright reds have gone with Olympus E-M1 files but now there is a new problem. Skin tones (caucasian) are dreadful. Everyone looks jaundiced. Not good... not good at all. If anything this is a step backwards from where it was before. For final support for the files this needs a lot of improving before Lr 5.3 goes live.

Quite interesting indeed. I just downloaded 5.3 and gave it a quick spin.
It appears the Adobe Standard profile has been tweaked a little bit. I made the mistake not to export JPGs with the old profile, so I resorted to A/B-ing between the library and develop modules (using the previously generated previews for the library) to look for differences. The new profile has deeper blues and deep yellows are less orange-tinted. The skin tones seem to have shifted slightly away from yellow and are now quite acceptable.
The 'camera' profiles are interesting, too. The 'natural' and 'vivid' modes are too contrasty for my tastes, but that mimics the Olympus style. The 'muted' and 'portrait' modes offer pleasing colours, but the saturated yellows in the 'muted' mode a bit too strong and the 'portrait' mode is a bit on the bright side. In any case, it's good to have so many options (and I still have a slight preference for the Huelight profiles).
As a bonus, it seems that CA correction is now automatically enabled on the E-M1. I remember reading somewhere that this was coming and would use the m4/3 lens correction data, but it's not in the release notes.

Ipad and olympus ORF raw files from epl-1

I have an ipad that I've used as something of a photo storage device while on vacations. I do underwater photography and each day I come in and download the card to my ipad. In the past I've used a point and shoot that saved the files in a jpg format and had no problem with any software being able to read or edit those files. Recently I purchased an olympus epl-1 camera and started shooting in raw. I followed my normal procedure and uploaded the files each day to the pad and it seems to allow me to view them without difficulty. Last night I downloaded the files to the computer in order to batch convert several to jpg's in photoshop elements. Photoshop tells me it cannot read the orf format from any of the files I downloaded from the pad. PSE has no trouble reading the raw files from the same camera that I had not uploaded to the pad. Does the pad change the files in some way? I intend to pull the files off of the cards tonight and see if pse will read them. Is this a known issue? I haven't found anything about it. The files should not have been changed by the iPad. Bear in mind that there are a half a zillion versions of RAW. It may be that the iPad does not support Olympus RAW.

.avi files and codecs

Hi I posted a question yesterday about .avi and there were some helpful responses. I installed GSpot and it tells me that the CODEC for the video file is MJPG/Motion JPEG, on an Olympus Pen EPL1 digital camera, and there is no CODEC required on the audio file. It then says that the MJPG CODEC is installed on my computer, so why when I import the file into Premiere Elements 9, it plays back in very poor quality?

Poor playback, when the proper CODEC is installed on one's system is often due to a mis-match between the Source Files, and the Project's Preset. The biggest killer of Quality, is when the Frame Size of the Project does not match the Frame Size of the Source Files, and Scaling is done, with Scale to Default Frame Size checked.
The next most common cause of a lack in quality is the specific CODEC itself. For MJPEG, there are two highly popular CODEC's, Morgan and MainConcept. While there are others, those two are highly recommended by many users. Many cameras, that shoot in MJPEG will also ship with the mfgr's. version of the MJPEG CODEC. As that mfgr. might well have tweaked things a bit, if one does have a utility/driver disc, I would strongly recommend installing their version of MJPEG. This might be installed along wiith the driver for the camera, as part of an editing/organizing program, or maybe as a separate install. It will just depend on the camera, and might even vary, model to model. This ARTICLE will give more background, and also some potentially useful links.
Let's go back to the first paragraph. When you ran your Source Files through G-Spot, what were the Frame Size and PAR (Pixel Aspect Ratio) listed?
How do those figures match up with your Project Preset, chosen with New Project? A mis-match here can have a very negative effect on quality. If one has Scale to Default Frame Size checked, and the Source Footage is smaller, than the Project's Frame Size, the user will not see that the program has Scaled UP the Clip(s) to match. If Scale to Default Frame Size is unchecked, then the user would see black bars around all, or parts of the Frame, with the Clip displayed smaller in the Frame.
While PrE can Scale footage UP, or DOWN, its algorithms are not the best and quality will suffer. A little bit of Scaling might go unnoticed, but if one had, say SD 720 x 480 material, in an HD 1920 x 1080 Project, then quality would go down dramatically.
One thing to consider is that if there is a mis-match, there will be a red line over the Clip(s). This shows that for the best, smoothest playback, that footage needs to be Rendered. One would press Enter to Render that Timeline. The Render could be limited to just a segment of the Timeline by using the WAB (Work Area Bar). This produces proxy files, that will give the best possible playback. This ARTICLE will give more background on Rendering. While the Program Monitor in the program, on a high-rez computer monitor is not the best viewing situation for SD material (an NTSC, or PAL, calibrated CRT monitor is the best, but those are very expensive, and the NLE program needs to support them), one can get fairly close by adjusting the Magnification (Rt-click on the Program Monitor) to 100% from Fit. To see the entire Frame, it might be necessary to adjust the Program Monitor's Panel.
As you can see, there are several things that can affect quality. If you will give us info on your Source Footage, your Project's Preset and also which version of the MJPEG CODEC, someone will be able to direct you.

Lightroom 5 (5.1, 5.2 and now 5.3RC) SLOW and unresponsive on Mavericks

Hello! I am having issues using Lightroom 5 (from first rel to 5.3RC). In the specificity it is rather slow and unresponsive. As soon as I edit something I get spinning wheel, sometimes editings work immediatly other times it is very laggish.
I have a late 2008 2.4ghz Macbook pro, 8gb ram, OWC SSD (with both application, catalogue, files and previews on). I edit 16mp raw files copied as DNG. Did not have problems with lightroom 4. Camera raw cache is set to 20gb on the SSD. Catalogue is very small (less than 500 pictures), as I use it only for editing and then I export and archive the JPGs separately. I have to say that perormance decreased after updating to Mavericks but it was not particularly good with Mountain Lion either.
I tried all the usual things (flushing caches, rebuilding previews, starting new catalogue, etc.) but to no avail. It looks like Lightroom 5 actually works rather worse than 4 performance wise, and that Mavericks does not help. Anyone with the same problems? Does anybody have suggestions on how to improve it?

I have now worked quite a lot with the 5.3RC on Mavericks and I noticed that the main problem is the library module. As soon as I enter the develop module all is fine and it works pretty well. Editing is snappy and so forth. The library module is really laggish. Every two or three pictures that I only look at I get the spinning wheel, when I delete a file, spinning wheel, when I double click to enlarge a file, spinning wheel. I work with raw files converted to DNG, but I get the same problem with unconverted JPGS. The weird thing it that since I updated to Mavericks the whole JPG handling gives spinning wheels, i.e. when I Quicklook a JPG from Finder I have to wait a bit for it to load. Does anybody share my experience?

Olympus ePL2 RAW file support

Does anyone know how to get Aperture 3.1.1 to support Olympus ePL2 RAW files?

I also do need support for E-PL2 RAW files in Snow Leopard.
My workflow is based on using Photosmith iApp on the iPad and Lightroom on the Mac.
E-PL2 .orf RAW files not being supported by the OS causes me troubles with filenames.
I'm also using a Canon G12 camera which RAW files are well understood by the OS (QuickView displays a nice preview) and I don't have any problem when syncing Photosmith with Lightroom.
Therefore the only faulty guy is the OS so pleeeeeaaaase Apple bring E-PL2 support to Snow Leopard.

How to edit a Animated Gif file and convert to SWF

I am using the creative cloud with fireworks. I chose the free trial with buying in mind if I saw it work properly. I simply want to upload an animated GIF file and then download it as a SWF file. I saw someone on youtube do this and it's not that if I get on the correct page I would not know how to do that but I just cannot find how to get the GIF into the software to edit. It has just simply put them in the creative cloud folder which can open them on IE> How do i make it available to edit and convert to SWF please? Thanks in advance.

Report Generation tool kit for MS office (Opening an existing excel file and appending to the bottom)

I don't have any problems creating and filling an excel sheet with data. I use the New Report.vi, Easy Title.vi, and Easy Text.vi to create the file. I then save and dispose properly.
What I don't seem to be able to do is open the exsting file and append data to the end of the sheet.

Hi Todd,
You can do this by creating a new Excel report with the existing excel file path wired to the "template" input. Then use "Excel Get Last Row.vi" (located under Report Generation\Excel Specific\Excel General) to obtain the location of the last row. Then use that location to input new data into the file.

So I commented all the lines except for the first executable one; and when it succeeds then I uncomment the next executable line; and so on. One easy way to send a file through RMI is to read all bytes of a file to a byte array and send this array as a parameter of a remote method. But of course you may have problems with memory when you send large files. The receive is simillary.
Other way is to split the file and getting slices of the file, sending slices and re-assemble at destination. This assume that the file isn't changed through the full transfering is concluded.

I am suddenly getting a message that the 'mobile device services' has stopped working on my computer and windows seems unable to fix. I have tried finding the file and making sure that it is enabled. It says 'enabled' but does not work.

I recently downloaded a new update of the operating system on my 3GS It seems to be a bit slower since and I have no idea if that is part of what is going wrong. I cannot get itunes to recognise my phone. Windows pops up a 'window' that says my 'mobile device services' is not working and would I like Windows to look online for the problem - I say yes, windows does it's thing, blanks out and I am back where I was. I tried updating itunes but no luck.
I found the mobiledeviceservices.exe file and made sure it was all 'on' and 'enabled' still no luck I did a search and came up with some other people who had the same problem but the answers that they were given didn't help me.

When you erased the disk did you select Mac OS Extended Journaled as the format option?

My external hard drive is 'seen' by my iMac and I can go into the Finder and open files and folders. I am using the hard drive for Time Machine back up. However Time Machine says it can't find the drive. Same thing has happened with Final Cut Express.

I think you can remove suggestions from the address bar by arrowing down to the unwanted site on the auto-suggest drop-down list and pressing Delete.
Make sure to arrow to another site or edit the address before pressing Enter or using Go, because that deleted URL will still be the address bar.

The problem is in the delimiters in your text file. By default, Read From Spreadsheet File.vi expects a tab delimited file. You can specify a delimiter (like a space), but Read From Spreadsheet File.vi has a problem with repeated delimiters: if you specify a single space as a delimiter and Read From Spreadsheet File.vi finds two spaces back-to-back, it stops reading that line. Your file (as I got it from your earlier post) is delimited by 4 spaces.
Here are some of your choices to fix your problem.
1. Change the source file to a tab delimited file. Your VI will then run as is.
2. Change the source file to be delimited by a single space (rather than 4), then wire a string constant containing one space to the delimiter input of Read From Spreadsheet File.vi.
3. Wire a string constant containing 4 spaces to the delimiter input of Read From Spreadsheet File.vi. Then your text file will run as is.
Depending on where your text file comes from (see more comments below), I'd vote for choice 1: a tab delimited text file. It's the most common text output of spreadsheet programs.
Comments for choices 1 and 2: Where does the text file come from? Is it automatically generated or manually generated? Will it be generated multiple times or just once? If it's manually generated or generated just once, you can use any text editor to change 4 spaces to a tab or to a single space. Note: if you want to change it to a tab delimited file, you can't enter a tab directly into a box in the search & replace dialog of many programs like notepad, but you can do a cut and paste. Before you start your search and replace (just in the text window of the editor), press tab. A tab character will be entered. Press Shift-LeftArrow (not Backspace) to highlight the tab character. Press Ctrl-X to cut the tab character. Start your search and replace (Ctrl-H in notepad in Windows 2000). Click into the Find What box. Enter four spaces. Click into the Replace With box. Press Ctrl-V to paste the tab character. And another thing: older versions of notepad don't have search and replace. Use any editor or word processor that does.

Try opening the problem files using a text editor or file viewer to see what the first few bytes contain. All valid FM binary files for FM 11 will contain <MakerFile 11.0> in the first bytes of the file.
When updating books, it's sometimes better to just to create a new book file and add the files to that.
When renaming files in a book, changes at the system level will break any links/cross-references between files, so it's always best to use the Rename option in the Book file to change FM file names. This will maintain the correct linkages.
