Olympus E-P1: Why DNG files from DNG-Converter, Lightroom or CameraRaw are invalid ?

Hello from Spain:
I've got a Olympus Pen E-P1.
I work with DNG Converter 5.5, Lightroom 2.5, CameraRaw 5.5, Photoshop CS4 with my *.ORF files with no problems, and I can convert ORF in DNG with those software smooth, but...
I can't open those DNG files with DNG Profile Editor. It display a error message "Could not open the selected image. Note that the selected image must be a valid DNG color image".
I'm trying to create a E-P1 DNG Profile using ColorChecker Passport. When I try to import a DNG file displays a similar error message "Can't open the file. Is a invalid DNG file".
What is occurring about DNG files from E-P1's ORF?.
Thank you,
Juanlu.

Hi, Beat:
Thanks for your offer.
Here you are a link to _B101110.ORF from my E-P1 for anyone who wants to try.

  • Why do files from my Nikon D200 camera which are shot at 28MB come into Aperture at only 7MB?

Why do files from my Nikon D200 camera which are shot at 28MB come into Aperture at only 7MB?
I had these images in Large Fine JPG format at 28MB but when imorted and started working with them they are only & MB files in Aperture?

    Léonie,
honestly speaking, I have done most of my image adjustments since 2006 (when I bought the D200) in various image processing applications (e.g. Capture One, Bibble 5 - now turned to AfterShot Pro by Corel, Lightroom at a friend's PC). I also tried Nikon's Capture NX but never liked it. Speaking of images that have been worth while keeping and working with as a RAW file I never saw any difference. As far as I can say with respect to Aperture 3 I come to the the same result as I did with the other software.
People may say that with the disk space being so cheap now it is not worth while thinking about that. But there is one other aspect that can be of advantage in certain situations: The compressed RAWs are transferred faster to and from the the card than the uncompressed files. Also, the time for decompression in applications seems to be shorter than that saved while reading the smaller files.
Before I started to use the compression feature (which in fact should be not lossless in the case of D200) I studied some reviews on that, of course.
Citing one of them one could say
"I tried to make duplicate shots to compare. I gave up. The mechanical exposure repeatability of my camera and nature itself aren't stable enough to let me make two captures close enough to see any possible difference between compressed and uncompressed raw.
People do see differences. They are seeing fluctuations in their technique shot-to-shot, not any differences due to the compression."

If you are interested, here is the original article by Ken Rockwell.
Another very elaborate investigation can be found here.
Again, a quote from the controversal discussion on that comparison:
"The ‘lossy’ NEF compression is really a clever use of information theory to save space by eliminating redundant raw levels. The noise which is unavoidably present in light effectively dithers tonal transitions so that the compression is *perceptually lossless*."
    by a poster named emil
As far as I have read elsewhere, newer cameras as the D300 even have really "lossless" compression algorithms.

  • Why some files from my Dropbox can't be opened?

Why some files from my Dropbox can't be opened?
I have this problem for some time now. I don't have these issues in my other devices, my MacBook Pro and my Samsung Galaxy Note 1.

    > LR2.2 and ACR5.2 aren't out yet, though, so you will have to wait a bit.
Don't let ACR5.x availability confuse you. IE, you won't be able to use any version of ACR other than 3.x with CS2. You will have to use the Lr2.x update when it's available, or use the DNG 5.2 converter if CS2 ACR3.x is your preference.

  • My jpg files from CR2 edits in CS6/CC are not being imported into LR5.

My jpg files from CR2 edits in CS6/CC are not being imported into LR5. Bridge and Explorer can see them ok. Tried to reimport but LR5 cant see them.
The file numbers are the same as original CR2 but have the jpg extension. TIFFS and PSDs seem ok. Can anybody help please?

how do I get all these files in my catalogue in the correct places cos they scattered around a bit
That's kind of a broad question ... and there are many different approaches ... so I will explain my approach, and other people can explain their approach.
My approach is to assign keywords and optionally captions and titles and other metadata to all of your photos, and use those to organize and search. Then, it doesn't matter what folders things are located in, if you want to see all your pictures of Chicago, you simply click on the arrow to the far right of the keyword Chicago. You don't have to remember what folders to look in, and this works even if the photos are scattered in a dozen different folders. In addition, since photos must be in one and only one folder, that limits your ability to organize; but you can assign as many keywords as you'd like to a photo, so a single photo can have keywords "Chicago" "Zoo" "Elephant" "Vacation" "Illinois" "United States" etc.

  • Error trying to import raw files from NIKON to Lightroom

I am an amateur photographer. I just purchased a brand new NIKON D3300 took a few pictures, signed up for the Adobe annual Photographers Creative Cloud annual program and my first task to have Lightroom import a few test photos fails and I have no clue why my raw + jpgs can't be imported. at the outset In Lightroom I also got a "Preview unavailable for this file" message for every image file when I pointed to the memory card I had connected to my computer:
The files are not recognized by the raw format support in Lightroom. (35)

    NIKON D3300
The Nikon D3300 Raw format is not yet supported in Lightroom 5 (currently 5.3).
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
Raw file formats are proprietary to each camera manufacturer and specific to each camera model. Adobe's Camera Raw engine (used by both Adobe Camera Raw - as a plugin to Photoshop - and Lightroom) must be constantly updated with every new camera make and model which arrives on the market in order to read and edit Raw files from that camera.
Adobe has added support for the D3300 to Camera Raw 8.4 which is about to be released. It is a Release Candidate (RC status) at the moment. So D3300 Raw support will probably be added to the next soon-to-be-released Lightroom update (5.4).
    http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/cameraraw8-4-cc/?tabID=details#tabTop
In the meantime, you can download the free Adobe DNG Converter 8.4
    http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/cameraraw8-4.html
Using the DNG converter, you can then convert the D3300 Raw files to DNGs then open and edit the DNGs in Lightroom 5.3.
Once Lightroom 5.4 is released (assuming it also has D3300 support) the DNG conversion will no longer be required.

  • After using DNG converter, Lightroom still won't recognize and import my photos...

I just started shooting with a Sony A6000 and couldn't import the photos due to compatibility issues with my current version of lightroom (4.4).  After reading about it on the forums I found that I had to either download LR5 or use the DNG converter then import into LR.  I opted for the free problem fix and downloaded DNG Converter v8.4 (compatible with Sony A6000).  Now, after converting my freshly shot photos to DNGs, I've tried to import them into Lightroom through both the Copy and Move functions (because I like the file organization I've established through LR) but each time I end up with a dialogue box saying "Could not move a file to the requested location."  When in the import window, LR shows previews of the images clearly. When converting to DNGs, I've ensured the photos are compatible with Camera RAW v7.1 and later (my LR has v7.4) and I've tried both embedding Fast Load Data and not... Also, I'm using a MacBook Pro OS X 10.9 if that makes any difference.  Am I missing something? I don't see what the problem is... All I want to do is organize and edit my new photos from my new camera on LR without having to pay an additional $80 for the new LR just because I have a new camera...

This could be a permissions issue, especially if you are using a Mac computer. Make sure you have write permission for the folder you are trying to import into.

  • Difference between Adobe DNG Converter & Lightroom DNG Converter?

I've converted NEFs to DNGS using both Adobe DNG Converter and Lightroom DNG Converter.
I found that the converted DNGS from Lightroom have a different icon in the finder that those convereted from Adobe DNG Converter. The icon in the finder from Lightroom looks like a file icon, and that from tthe Adobe DNG Converter looks more like a JPEG icon.
Otherwise they seem to be identical.
    Thanks for any input.

It's not at all unusual for DNGs to be smaller file sizes if you did the DNG conversion using lossless compression, did you? Fuji raw files are known for being oversized due to the way they write their image data. Also, totally ignore any findings you may regarding JPEGs, those are lossy compressed and don't figure into the equation...

  • How to transfer RAW files from iPhoto to lightroom without converting them to jpeg

When I transfer RAW image file from iPhoto to my lightroom library they appear as jpeg files, how do I transfer them as RAW?

Are you having a problem? What have you tried? Do you have Apple's camera connection kit?
With the CCK, you can connect the camera or the camera's SD card.

  • Can I transfer files from a Mac and PC that are both on my wireless LAN?

I've a number of Macs connected to my Wirelesss LAN and also have a PC (Windows XP) that I want to connect to the network. That isn't going to be a problem but I want to know if I can then move files from the "Mac environment" onto the PC.
If it's possible, how is it done?
    Regards,
    Cliff

Yes. Just enable the file/folder sharing for each computer. They'll treat it as a network share. I did need to set the options for the Mac folders to use SMB for the PC to see it.

  • How do I access and delete file from "Save to Your Online Account" area.

I just downloaded the trial version of Acrobat XI.  I created a PDF file with sensitive information that I thought would be saved only to my computer but noticed that it was saved to my "online account."
I've searched and found how to reset that feature but I need to know how to access that Online Account and remove my file permanently from it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated (and necessary if I'm to purchase this tool).

That's what it looks like to me, too.  It was only saved on my computer.  The reason I thought it might be saved online somewhere is because, when I saved the file, there was a box checked that said "Save To Your Online Account."  What does this mean then?
Also, when I open the Acrobat application, the file is listed there under Recent Files and it doesn't give me a way to clear the recent file list.
My goal is to make sure that my sensitive information is not being stored somewhere, anywhere online with Adobe or anyone else.  The only place I want that file to appear is in the documents file of my computer.

  • How do I remove song files from my iTunes Music Folder that are deleted?

    Hi,
When I deleted unwanted songs from my iTunes Library I selected the option to Keep Files instead of Moving Song to the Recycle Bin. As a result I've now got a load of unwanted music files clogging up my music folders.
So how can I identify music files that are in my iTunes Music Folders but have been deleted from the iTunes Library and then remove them from my hard drive?
    Cheers,
    Andy.
    Sony laptop   Windows XP Pro

Here's a thought, have you added any new items to your library recently?
If you add your iTunes music folder to your library, anything not already in your library will be added.
Now go to your library view and make sure you have the date added column visible. (Right click in the header row to get a list of columns that can be selcted).
Now sort by date added and everying you just added will be together and can be easily identified for deletion.
Note this only applies if files are in the iTunes Music folder, files in other places have to be deleted in Windows Explorer.
PS iT is usually a good idea to make a copy of iTunes Library.itl before experimenting. Copy it from your iTunes folder to somewhere else.

  • Saving Files from Photoshop to Lightroom

In LR 3 when I saved an image after editing in PS, the edited file showed up next to the original RAW file. Now in LR 4, the saved image is placed at the end of the folder. It there a preference somewhere that I can set to tell LR that I want it placed next to the original? I like to see them side-by-side and don't like having to go searching for the edited file.
    Thaanks.

I don't think so. By sorting them manually (user order), you're effectively over-riding the capture time default , so it wouldn't be logical for it to sort by both at the same time, if you see what I mean. How would LR be able to figure out which files to sort automatically, and which ones to leave alone?

  • Any ideas how to fix an "unexpected error" that is preventing my files from being converted?

I just bought this program to convert PDF files and it can't due to an "unexpected error". I'm pretty sure I just wasted my money but am hoping maybe someone has an answer!

    Hi Chelsey,
    Hope I can help!
What is the file type and size? Is the PDF a scanned document?

  • Duplicate DNG's from Adobe converter to light room

I am having an issue with moving or adding DNG's to lightroom after a conversion is performed by Adobe DNG converter ~ lightroom is creating a 2nd folder within the folder I created ~ each folder is having the new, converted images uploaded, therefore creating duplicates ~ I'm  wondering how this is happening?!?

OK ~ here are the exact steps I've been performing (files are DNG & I am converting them to Lossy ~ performing following functions in bulk)
    in Adobe DN Converter
1 ~ Select Folder with images to convert
2 ~ Select location to save converted images
3 ~ Select name for converted images
    File extension .dng
    Preferences ~
    Camera Raw 7.1 and later
    JPEG preview ~ Medium
Check Use Lossy Compression ~ Preserve Pixel Count
    then Convert
After Conversion in LR Import photos & video ~ select Source ~ select Move ~ select To:
    Select Import
once import to LR this is where there is a 2nd folder created & the images are in both the 'target' folder as well as in the folder that was created by LR ~ therefore duplicate images
