OMF Export - 24 bit

Our shop primarily shoots HDV & DVCPRO HD which both record audio in 16 bit so when the footage is brought into FCP it is 16 bit. We usually send most of our projects to Pro Tools for audio finishing and then they are delivered via streaming video and/or DVD.
Is there any value to exporting the OMF file as 24 bit over 16 bit? Does it add any value to the finished product?

My thinking is this. If you were not coming back into fcp for finishing, there MIGHT be some advantage in working in a higher bitrate: you won't gain anything by transcoding, but the higher bitrate may allow you some lattitude in ProTools. But once you come back into FCP at 16, there it all goes. And you'll actually weaken the integrity of the file by transcoding it twice.

  • OMF export failed due to internal error

I get this error message whatever I do when I try to export as OMF:
"OMF export failed due to internal error"
    I tried OMF 1 and 2.
I tried to uncheck "include audio".
I tried an extremely small project (one region, one track).
Always the same error. Problem is there's absolutely no information on what kind of internal error this is.
All other export options (AFF, Open TL and Final Cut) works.
    Any ideas?

I suppose that beside CCM 4.1(2) you are using AC 1.4 (1), if yes, then you need to upgrade to AC 1.4 (1) ES11 or upgrade at least to CCM 4.1(3)ES42 or CCM 4.1(3) sr3c

  • QT can't export 10 bit images?

I have 10 bit uncompressed quicktime movies, from which I need to export 10 bit image sequences. When I export using either QT 7.0.2 or FCP5, I get 8 bit images. What's going on?

Hmmmm.....Well, I'm certainly seeing the problem. But it must be more complex, and also perhaps involve CPU architectures: I imported HD DVCPRO 720p @23.98fps media from a P2 Store on a MacBook Pro using 5.1.1. Those imported Quicktime media files can not be viewed on a G4 w/ 5.0.4 but can be viewed on a G5 w/ 5.1.2. On the G4 the movie files opened at the right rez but with a blank white image (typical when the codec is missing/bad), although the audio played fine. Neither the G4 nor the G5 have an added video card.
This is confusing because it would be simple if it was just Intel vs PowerPC, but it's not, as the G5 works but the G4 doesn't. I never had a chance to see if it will work on the G5 using 5.0.4.
Obviously there's more to this than we'd thought.

  • Multitrack OMF Export Issue - CS6

    Hello All,
Does CS6 not like exporting an OMF when I have a multitrack audio file?  It hangs during OMF export (separate files) and never finishes.
If that is the case, what is the purpose of the multitrack audio file.
ex: I have one stereo track, and one multitrack on the timeline.
    Thanks!
    - Ryan

    Hey TacoRye,
I posted about this like a month ago and got no response. It has made my life hell on this job I'm doing. What happens is when you make the OMF PP is taking the entire audio track that is attached to every clip in your video instead of pairing it down with handles so the OMF is huge. Apparently OMF's can't be over 2 gigs with media embedded. The only work around is to render and replace but then your audio engineer doesn't have handles. (You'd think they'd at least give you handle options on render and replace.)  I never ever would have started this edit of 10 different videos using the multi track functions in premiere as they obviously haven't thought through the work flow. You can't even match your audio back to original source to try and replace just the audio portions of clips in your timeline. Absolutely pathetic.

  • Does Logic Express export 24 bit?

I am debating between buying Soundtrack Pro or Logic Express and wanted to know if Logic Express exports 24 bit. Thanks.

Yes it does. I use it. I think it depends on your audio interface though.

  • OMF Export Hangs

I imported a FCP XML project and it seems to be just fine.  But now I'd like to export my project to OMF to go to Pro Tools.  The export process hangs (so does AAF)...any idea what could be causing this???  I have even tried to cut everything from the sequence and just have two audio clips, and it still hangs.
Other OMF exports from projects I have started in Premiere CS5 seem to go smoothly.
    On PC, Win 7 64, CS5 v 5.02

I have had the same and other problems with OMF export ... I wish Adobe would get this working or provide better documentation on the problems. I also wish they would add a way to export CS5 audio tracks to their excellent application Audition 3 which I would rather use than Pro Tools anyway!
I have found that deselecting all the video tracks (no eyeballs) helps sometimes. The OMF export chokes on time remapping, nested sequences and other of PPro's cool features. I have also had problems with audio in the timeline which was inserted as "subclips" from the bin - the exporter can't find the audio file.
Hope this helps, I haven't really solved the problem either.

  • Audition 5.0.1 crash on OMF export

I'm getting a crash everytime I try to export an OMF from Audition 5.0.1 ( and also from 5.0.0 )
I'm on a mac 10.7.3 any clues, anyone else seeing this?

    Hi Durin
Actually no it wasn't working on 5.0 either, I tried installing the update patch in the hope it would fix it. Thanks for all your help with this.

  • Syncing Audio with Merge Clips option and OMF export question/issue

    Hi,
In the past when I've edited video, when it came to syncing audio I always did it manually.  This time, using Premiere Pro CC, I used the merge clips option, to speed up the syncing audio process, which was a huge time saver with excellent results.
The question/issue I have..is that when I get my OMF exported for my sound editor, will this screw anything up, since on the project file, it doesn't use the original audio file, but the one that was merged.  And in the project list, I don't even need to have the original audio file listed, since it's already been merged into a clip, which I used in the project.  I know it's the same file used, but will it mess anything up since a merged clip audio was used instead of just dragging the original track onto the timeline?
    - Ken

A good way to know for sure (and therefore feel comfortable that you're doing the right thing) is to do a test OMF export, then open this in Audition. This ill show you exactly what you're exporting.

  • Is there any workaround for exporting 24 bit AAF of OMF in soundtrack?

    Hi
Soundtrack pro seems to have only 16bit AAF export function. Is there any workaround to be able to export a multitrack session in higher bit (24bit industry standard) resolution, in AAF or OMF format?
I know Final Cut has 24bit AAF export funcion, but sending clips from soundtrack to Final Cut seems not possible. Only sending mastermixes to FC is possible. But I want to send individual clips to FC.
Or any other suggestions are welcome for solving this problem.
    Thanks!

If Premiere offers you the option to use hardware encoding, then your card is recognized. There is normally nothing more to do.  If I understand you correctly, you are concerned that Premiere is not using the card.  There are 2 ways to check if it is:
    1. Install someting like GPU-Z (google it, it's free) to monitor the GPU. Start to encode something that will actually use CUDA cores, and you should see some activity reported, given as a percentage.  Keep in mind that CUDA is only used for some specific tasks (some effects, resizing) when encoding.
    2. Export a file that will use CUDA when encoding 2 times, once with hardware encoding enabled, and then with software only. Is there a difference in the time needed to complete the export?

  • OMF export and AVID DS

I have an 8-track, 5 minute audio sequence I have exported directly from FCP 5.0.4 and am trying to get it into our AVID DS Nitris. Export from FCP goes fine. Upon trying to import the OMF, the DS pops up an error message saying 'edit rate does not match current sequence'. Settings in both FCP and DS are 29.97 NDF, 16-bit, 48k. Anyone had this happen before? Is this something Automatic Duck would solve?

    At this rate, never.
Everyone knows DS is a little finicky about importing OMF files, and it is a little finicky about ours too. The only real problem I'm aware of is when clips aren't from tape-- if they're imported clips-- they seem to get lost. But we are in no position to know why things fail and we are in position to fix them. So even though it mostly works well for people, we don't stand behind the practice.
You might want to ask around on the DS list, lots of people seem to do it even though we don't support it.
Maybe someday if Avid gets updated to the current AAF standard, maybe then things will "just work".

  • OMF Export issue in Premiere CS6

    Hello,
I am trying to export a feature length OMF file for my sound mixer. I have the tracks I want on and selected. I then do File - Export - OMF. I do encapsulated audio, with 60 frame handles. I then start the export. I encodes through the files then it starts "generating metadata" and making its "First Pass Parsing Tracks", but it will immediatly jump to about 1/3 of the way through and just sit there. I have left it for about 3 hours and it still sits there. I have tried saving to various folders/hard drives and still no luck. I have seen people having problems with the omf working with other programs, but I haven't seen many people with this problem. Deadline is fast approaching and I desperately need to get this out to my sound mixer. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
    Tony

    Hi Anthony,
I'm using Premier Pro 6 from the creative cloud, and am also doing a feature length doc.  I'm having issues exporting an OMF and it originally came from FCP 7.  I'm wondering if you've had any other reflections on the issues mentioned above and if you can offer any more insight?  I'm pretty sure I don't have any filter applied anywhere as I had only exported it from FCP 7 when I was in the logging phase.
Someone else mentioned using Audition.  Send the whole sequence to Audition and export an OMF from there. Have you tried to send your feature length doc sequence to Audition and has it been succesfull?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Ryan

  • OMF export for Pyramix and ProTools not working correctly

I am exporting OMF files of very simple timelines (30 second promos) for an audio guy based in another part of the country to do audio post.
He is using Pyramix 7.1.10 and ProTools 9.1, while I'm outputting from Premiere 6.0.1
The problem is that when he imports the .OMF (which is exported 24bit, trimmed audio, encapsulated files), one leg of the music track is always missing
This happens the same in both ProTools and Pyramix
Has anyone else had this happen?  Am I missing something? Is there a workaround?
    All help appreciated
    Thanks
    jON

I am a post audio mixer working in ProTools, and I have the same issue, just a little more complicated.
The editors I work with handle a variety of projects, most of which use sound shot with EFP cameras.  The audio recorded on these cameras is "stereo" in the sense that there are indeed 2 tracks as a single interleaved file, however, the content is dual mono, with the 2 tracks either being 2 lav mics, or a lav and the camera mic.
Is there any way in Premiere that this can be put onto 2 mono tracks, that are then exported as mono tracks, rather than being doubled up in the ProTools session?  Adaptive tracks don't seem to work in this situation.  The editors have tried a variety of things, none of which seem to make a difference.
Also, regarding stereo music ... that too has been exported to me as a mono file, even though it was supposedly put onto a stereo track in Premiere.
    Thanks for any insights.

  • Can't export 16 bit tiff in A3.1.3  Lion

If I try to export a 16 bit tiff, the extension automatically changes to jpg.  I can only export an 8 bit tiff.  Thanks for any tips.

Aloha Tom and Ashley. Perhaps I should start another thread. This is my first time looking for help in this way. Thanks in advance Ashley are you going from Keynote to iMovie to FCE? Sure would be nice if we didn't need so many steps! The only reason I am in FCE is because I have been unsuccessful in getting a QT export from Keynote that marries sound file with movie and is stable.
Tom here is how I exported. Playback uses: manual advance, Compression H.264, Frame rate 29.97, keyframe - all, data rate automatic, compression quality - best. Then I imported to FCE, married music and movie (so easy), rendered and exported with same settings. Big black area around movie, little tiny movie in middle. Then I discovered on the Sequence canvas there is a drop down with the choices <image> <image with wire frame> <show overlays> When I select image with wire frame it looks like it is creating a larger letterbox. But the export output when it is large is both fuzzy and distorted even when I import a 1920 x 1080 version.
Tom/Ashley perhaps this isn't the program to use. All I need is a high res 16:9 QT with music and movie married into one file and stable being used on computers and LCD players. It will not be TV viewed. I could reframe the Keynote to 4:3 if I have to to get the viewing size and image quality.
What would you suggest. And again thank you. I have been fiddling with this for weeks, with progress but no success. Cathy

  • OMF export for protools mix questions

    Hi, first post ...
Been using logic pro for about a year, so excuse me if this is redundant. I did a search and couldn't come up with all the answers I needed (this place via search has helped many times) I am exporting a project I did in Logic pro 7 to OMF for someone else to mix in P.T. Am I correct in assuming I first need to bounce all midi files to audio and reinsert them in the project via aif into audio tracks?
Also, when you export to OMF I understand that the panning is not transfered, but how are the individual track effects along with Bus and output buss effects treated? I think understand it that the automation is ignored, but will they recieve my tracks processed the same way as say they were bounced to mp3? I am thinking not.... and for the few tracks where the effects are intergal to the part, I need to bounce them and print the effects and then re-insert like I did with midi? Sorry if this confusing post, but I am a newbie to all this, any help greatly appreciated.
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Forget the OMF deal...
Logic 7 has a feature called "Export All Tracks as Audio Files". Use it.
All MIDI will automatically be bounced as audio files.
All audio regions will be consolidated so that they all start from the same point.
Any plug-ins on your tracks will become part of the bounced audio, so make sure only plug-ins crucial to the sound are left on.
No automation will be written to the exported audio files. They will all bounce at unity gain.
No FX from busses or Auxes will be included. This is generally the preferred result, as a mix engineer will want a "clean slate" from which to work.
Make sure all your audio objects are named properly. On each track, hold down the option key, and double click. Type a relevant track name, such as Kick, snare, kazoo, etc... otherwise, the exported files will have names like "Audio 1, Audio 2", etc... and you'll find a voodoo doll of yourself with pins in it next to the mix engineers console.
By utilizing the "Export All Tracks as Audio" feature, you are creating audio files, that run from bar 1, beat 1, to the end of the song. The PT engineer will then import these into a new PT session. Tell him/her the beats per minute, so they can set it up on a grid (necessary for quick edits, tempo sync'd FX, etc..).
This is the preferred method of handing a song made in one DAW, off to another, to be mixed.
