Ominous noise emanating from iBook.

I think my iBook may be dying. Intermittently, there is an unusual grinding noise coming from inside. It is mechanical, not from the speakers. I don't think it is the fan. It happens even when it is cold. Whenever the grinding noise occurs, the beach ball appears, and I can't do anything. When the grinding noise stops, the machine resumes normal operation.
Sometimes I can make the noise stop by lifting the iBook up, or tilting it slightly. But that doesn't always work, and when it does, it is not for long.
My theory is that the hard drive head stepper is having trouble. I doubt that the head itself is crashing, because so far (touch wood) I have not had any read/write errors.
Now I usually upgrade to new hardware every two years. It is time for a new iBook for me anyway.
However, is there a good chance Apple will come out with a new model, at MacWorld on January 9th? Perhaps I should wait a couple of weeks, and see what happens on that date.
Meanwhile, is there anything I can do to about my poor iBook? Will the Disk Utility help in any way, or is that only for data errors?
-Ron.

Frances144,
I must say that I think you have been given misinformation. If you don't mind I would like to explain the "logic board problems" and how the term is over used. The logic board problem was with the G3, it was fixed with the new design of the newer iBooks. I have found that most "logic board" problems are not exactly a logic board problem. For an example, a computer is starting up with a grey screen with the spinning symbol and not being able to get any farther in the startup process has before been labeled a "logic board problem". I can think of about maybe 10 different reasons why this is happening. Usually it is a software problem, corrupt startup software. This can be fixed by reinstalling the system software. Another common problem that is fixed by replacing the logic board is a broken DC board. They can't power their iBook, so a reseller might just replace the logic board. Reason being, it would probably be cheaper just to put a whole new logic board in rather then the DC board. You would have to take the whole computer apart and disconnect the DC board to replace it. Also by just changing the DC board there is more of a risk of problems afterwords. Anyways, his problem is the hard drive, not the logic board. If you look closely at the logic board program, it has to do with video and the video card. Please don't be confused with faulty assumptions on the Discussion Boards about the "logic board problem".

PS I am not an Apple employee nor am I connected in any way with them. I am just expressing my views and what I have seen on the issue. It is hard to truly troubleshoot a problem without interacting with it. By the way I don't mean to threadjack this thread.

  • Noise coming from the bottom of my mac?

There's a noise coming from the base of my early 2013 Mac Book Pro Retina.  When I'm resting it on my lap or pick it up it sounds like a spring sound and occasionally I can here it when I'm typing and push down a little hard on the t, y and u keys.  Do you think it would be possible to take this in to an Apple store and get it replaced or changed?  Not effecting performance but expect better for paying upwards of £2000.  Still within the 1 year warranty.  Thanks.

Aside from the fan, there should be no noises emanating from a retina MBP.  Your MBP comes with a warranty.  By all means take advantage of it and make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.

There is a semi-periodic beep sound coming from the apple tv while in operation. Does anyone have an idea of what could be causing this?

  • Whale sounds emanating from G4 MDD

Last night I began to hear this faraway sound, something like a singing whale in the room. Although this sound seems to be very non-directional, I have now determined it is coming from my computer tower. Sometimes the whale song is louder and sometimes softer. It is never very loud but sometimes it is loud enough to be distracting. It comes and goes. Sometimes I might go 10 minutes or so without hearing it, then it starts up and comes and goes for a minute or a couple of minutes.
Can anyone speculate on what it might be coming from and give me a heads up on worse problems that might eventually come about from it? My initial thought was that it might be a fan or a hard drive getting ready to crash.
    Thoughts?

I have a mirrored Drive Door dual 1 gig processor Mac.

    Hi, Richard!
It might help if any of the members ever heard the sounds of a whale singing in a room, because I can't imagine what they sound like when they do this. It sure does evoke a pretty strange vision in my mind though!
Seriously, if it's a high pitched noise, it's likely to be a drive motor bearing or fan bearing. If it's a drive bearing, you would be prudent to replace the drive. If it's a fan, you may be able to coax it back to normalcy with a tiny bit of light lubricant applied to the fan shaft with a pin oiler. However, you really need to first pinpoint he component...
Unless you have iTunes playing whale songs in the background, the sounds are likely emanating from one of three fans, the optical drive motor (if a disc is inserted), or one of your hard drives. You might attempt to pinpoint the source by fashioning a cone from a file folder to use as a listening device, opening the Mac's side door, and placing the small end of the cone against each of these mechanisms while listening with your ear at the other end. (Most folks don't have a stethoscope handy, but this works pretty well.)
While you've got things opened up, with the computer shut down, use a can of compressed "air" to blow out the dust bunnies from your fan assemblies.

  • I have hidden unwanted books from the purchased area of the iBooks store, but they're are still appearing on the front page of iOS as cloud downloads, is there a way to remove these from iBooks without using the hide iCloud books button?

I have hidden unwanted books from the purchased area of the iBooks store, but they're are still appearing on the front page of iOS as cloud downloads, is there a way to remove these from iBooks without using the hide iCloud books button?
Let me explain a little more. I had downloaded a lot of free books in the past as a trial when iBooks was first released and since then I have decided I no longer want them, because of this I hid them from the purchased section of the iBooks store. The 5 books left are ones I decided to keep as seen in the following picture.
This is how it appears in iBooks on my mac. There are 4 books downloaded and 1 book that I have decided not to download at this time. I would still like to keep this book available in the cloud incase I want to download it again in the future. You’ll notice that hide iCloud books is not selected, if I wanted to hide the book that I have chosen to keep in the cloud, but have not downloaded yet I could.
This is exactly how I think this feature should work. If you have hidden a book from your purchases it should not show up in the mac Ibooks app. (I am aware you can never actually delete a purchase, just hide them and that hidden purchases can be restored to your account from within the account management section of the iBooks store).
The iOS app is working differently for me. Here is a picture of the purchased tab on the iBooks store in iOS Ibooks. Again notice that pictures of Lilly is still yet to be downloaded. This is how I expected it to look.
If we visit the front page of iOS iBooks the view is very different from what I expected. Here we can see the 4 books I wanted to keep on my device and have downloaded. We can also see the 1 book I wanted to keep, but did not want to store locally on the device and left in iCloud (Pictures of Lilly). However we can also see all the books I had hidden from the purchased section of my iTunes account and which I believe should no-longer be visible, Dracula, frankenstein etc…
I am aware of the hide iCloud books button within the iOS app, but I did not need to use this to hide the books I had removed from the my purchased section of the iBooks store on the mac, why are they still appearing in iOS?
I’m still not sure if this is a software glitch or not. This article suggests to me that books can be hidden, but I had already completed these steps.
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201322
A browse of google also suggests people may have been able to hide past purchases from the front page of iBooks on iOS in the past.
In case there was an issue with syncing I tried logging in and out of my iTunes account via settings in iOS. Force closing the app, disabling automatic downloads and removing my device from iTunes in the cloud. Syncing with iTunes on the mac did not correct the issue either.
Interestingly I have the same issue on my iPhone 6 running iOS 8.3 as I do on my iPad mini suggesting that this might be an issue either with my account or with iOS iBooks software in general.
If there is a way to remove the already hidden iBooks in your account from the front page of iBooks on iOS without using the hide iCloud downloads button? Please help community!

My apologies for the lack of photos, here is my post again with photos.

  • How can i delete some books from ibook?

How can i delete some books from ibook? It says: this book can't be opened. The book is corrupt. I can't open and I can't delete it

I was unable to delete a book sample from my iPhone 5s running iOS 7.  This seems to be what worked for me.  I went to the Library and clicked "edit" in upper right side of the screen.  I then tapped one time on the book I wanted to remove and a blue check appeared at the bottom right corner of that book (presumably you could tap several at a time)  Anyway, when the blue check is on the book, you will see in the upper left of the screen the word "Delete" (mine was in red) I clicked that and then a confirming dialog came up from the bottom of the screen with the choices of "delete" or "cancel".  I chose "delete" and the book was gone.  Hope this helps.

  • Any way to move a non-DRM pdf from iBooks on iPad to Mac?

I downloaded a large number of pdfs from the web to my iPad and "saved" them in iBooks. Scare quotes fully justified. There are numerous posts describing situations in which people have lost such files, particularly when they have tried to use something seemingly safe like backing up the iPad and then using restore.
Is there anyway to backup these files:
    - Export from iBooks?
    - Backup of iPad via iTunes or iCloud?
    - Sync via iTues?
There is an option in iBooks that lets the user email a single file, but this would be extremely tedious to do for every single file.
Is anyone aware of any comparable instance in which a vendor makes it so difficult to move content out of an application, impossible to backup, and so easy to lose?

And what useful purpose does it serve to poll users for this type of information in a user to user support forum? If you want to rant or complain, your using the wrong venue. Like deggie, I have never lost anything when updating or restoring from a backup.
Try another PDF app as there are probably hundreds of them in the App Store. The Adobe Reader app that allows you to highlight, annotate, sign, read and fill out form fields, create folders, and so much more that you can do in iBooks. It works with file sharing and iTunes and it is free.

  • How can I change the e-mail address that shows when I try to order from iBooks?

Hi.  I recently had to change my e-mail address, and successfully changed my Apple ID to reflect the new e-mail.  However, while trying to order a book through iBooks today, I noticed that I was asked for my password and that my old e-mail was showing.  How can I change the old address to the new one so that I can order from iBooks?  Thank you.

Hi, fromsouth, and thank you for your reply.  When I go to store, there is no place that says "sign out" so I can't do this.  My old email is showing, and when I click on it I am asked for my password.  I tried my old password that I used with that email, but was told it was incorrect.  This is so frustrating!  I can't do any ordering on my iPad until this problem is solved.  Thanks again.

Warehouse that PDF on your own server, then link to it from your book.

Sounds like the disk in your MBP is accessing data on wake up

  • How to attach a PDF from Ibooks to a current email - help  !

    Hello,
I am using an Ipad mini and can't figure something out.
I have a long email and would like to attach a PDF file to my latest response. The PDF is currently in my IBooks.
I know I can send the PDF in a new/clean email, but the point is that I would like to be able to attach it to the current email. I can insert a photo or a video but there doesnt seem to be a way to insert a PDF file.
I tried to open the PDF up in a new mail, cut it, then paste it into the existing email, but even that doesn't seem to work - I checked my sent box and there was no attachment on the mail when I tried it that way. The only way around the problem I can think of is to create the new email with the attachment, save it as a draft, go back into the original mail, copy it, go back into drafts and paste the existing text around my attachment - but this is a ridiculous and time-consuming process and not really practical.
Can anyone kindly advise? I think there will be an easy solution, but I just dont see it yet -
    Thanks, M

There is no way to do what you are trying to do. You have to send the email and the pdf from iBooks.
Open the PDF in iBooks then tap the arrow icon in the upper left corner and select Email. Copy and paste the entire lengthy email into this new email in iBooks and send it that way, its clunky, but it is really the only way to accomplish what you want to accomplish using an iPad and the mail app. You can cancel the email in the iBooks app and it will allow you to save the draft and you can go back to using the mail app to send it, or just send the email from iBooks.
The mail app will only allow you to insert photos and videos as attachments.

  • How to transfer files from iBook to reader?

How to transfer files from iBook to reader

The first step is to export the PDF from iBooks to your computer (this cannot be one on your iPad or iPhone). Connect your iPad or iPhone to your syncing computer. Open iTunes. Select your device (how to do this depends on which version of iTunes you are running). Click on the Books tab at the top. In the current version of iTunes 11, I had to choose to view by PDFs. Then I could drag a PDF from the iTunes window to my Desktop.
Then follow the instructions in this document to import the PDF(s) into Adobe Reader:
    http://forums.adobe.com/docs/DOC-2532
Not so easy, I'm afraid. Easier if you just keep copies of your PDFs on your computer.
