On an IMac will a 4GB graphics card give a noticeable speed improvement over a 2GB card?

On an IMac will a 4GB graphics card give a noticeable speed improvement over a 2GB card?

In terms of Lightroom I'm pretty sure the answer would be "no".

  • New IMac GeForce 8800 GS Graphics card questions

I am considering buying a new IMac 3.06 Intel Processor with 500 GB HD, 2GB RAM, Geforce 8800 GS Graphics Card and 24 inch display.
Will this computer be able to run Windows Vista Aero Glass with all features turned on via Bootcamp software included with Jaguar?
Also does anyone have any information on this GeForce 8800 GS card? I've tried googling it and keep getting sporadic results of Geforce GTS and Geforce GTX cards but nothing about this GS card!
I want to run Vistas AeroGlass and the games I'm interested in playing are WOW, Oblivion, Battlefield 2142 & COD 4.
Can the new IMacs with this GeForce 8800 GS handle all this?

I have the AL iMac 2.4GHz w/ 1GB RAM and the Radeon 2600 w/ 256. Running XP in BootCamp I can run COD4 @ Max and is very playable (not necessarily full throttle) w/ plenty of action on screen. Also the PREY demo works just about as good. If I go to 1600x1200 it will run flawlessly.
WoW will play great on Leopard (though I've had a few freezes in game:::not sure if this is Mac update related or patching for WoW itself). You can also max WoW out and it runs smoother than COD4 (WoW is older) but for the beauty of the game and smoothness tune it a bit and you are cool. And yes AAx8:)
    Can't wait until I go to the Corsair 4GB kit w/ 4-4-12 cycle:):):P

  • IMac Upgrades: Processor or Graphics Card... which is better investment?

Im a graphic designer using the latest Adobe Creative Cloud suite and its time to replace my aging 2009 imac. I'm going to go with a new 27" iMac, but want to know... should I upgrade the graphics card from the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M 2GB GDDR5 to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4GB GDDR5 or would I be better of to put my money into upgrading to the i7 the processor? I will for sure be going with 16BG ram either way.
    Would certainly appreciate any advice.

Both of them are important for a graphic designer.
The processor and the GPU are quite good on the high-end 27-inch iMac. If I have to choose one, I would choose to upgrade the processor, because you should experience more performance by upgrading the processor to an Intel Core i7 one and it is the part that moves near everything in all applications. You should not have any problem with the built-in GPU.
If you buy it and you think it is better to get the upgraded GPU, you can return it during the first 14 days and get one with the upgraded GPU

  • Which is more important for Adobe CS6 and FCX on imac? Processor or Graphics Card?

Hi, I want to get the new 27" imac when it comes out this December. It will be my first mac although I have both an iPhone and iPad. I'm and artist and aspiring filmmaker and want to run Adobe CS6 and Final Cut Pro on it. I'm looking at the highest 27" but have limited funds for additional upgrades. Apart from RAM, what would i be better off upgrading on the imac? Going from the i5 to the i7? or going for the GTX 680mx Graphics card with 2gb of memory? or going for the 1TB Fusion drive? If you could only pick one or possibly 2, which would be the best to choose for video and graphics on the programs I mentioned? (I'm not into gaming, so performance on that front is of no concern to me)

    I don't have CS6...
    1) I would max out the video card. FCP X and Motion 5 uses the GPU over the CPU for processing power. Once you buy your new iMac you can't upgrade this...
    2) FCP X and Motion 5 will use all the ram you can throw at it. I have 16 GB of ram and both programs at times uses all 16 GB of ram. I really should bump up my ram to 32 GB. I would say 16 GB is the minimum for video.
    3) The processor would be last on my list. Computers are really fast even with an i5 processor. Once you buy your new iMac you can't upgrade this...
This is the iMac I bought last year:
    27" iMc mid-2011
    3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
    16GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4x4GB
2TB Serial ATA Drive + 256GB Solid State Drive
    AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5

  • Final Cut Pro HD 4.5 on a iMac G5, "missing AGP graphics card" ?

I know that this isn't supposed to work, but I used to be able to run FCP 4.5 on my iMac G5. Was running Tiger and FCP 4.5 both with the latest updates. Compressor and DVD Studio pro wouldn't open, but FCP was fine.
Recently, I did a clean install on my iMac G5 and now FCP wont open just like the rest of the suite because an "AGP graphics card is missing"
There must be some way around this if I did before.

    I think this will help...

  • Will 3rd party graphics card for MacPro1.1?

    Hello, all! ^^
I'm looking for a replacement graphics card for my MacPro 1.1 and now narrowing down to:
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT or 8800 GT now.
I'm looking at used ones now and wondering if 3rd party cards with those chipset above will work or,
if it has to be exactly Nvidia Geforce cards.
    Can anyone help, please?
    Thanks! ^^

Upgrade OS X to Snow Leopard and replace the GPU with Apple's ATI 5770.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • Will Upgrading My Graphics Card Speed up Export Time?

    Hello:
I am new to FCPX and I shot my first movie yeasterday and loved editing in FCPX. Here s my computer specs before I ask my question
Mac Pro 2009 Quad Core 2.93 GHZ
    24GB Ram
    Graphic Card - NVIIDA GT120 512mb
I use this computer for my recoridng studio and it works perfectly but now when working with video there are two things I noticed while working with my first project. I shot a 1920 X 1080 60P on my HD camcorder and the moive was 32 minutes. Here are the issues
    1. Im FCPX the play head in the time line sometimes seems a little choppy and the background render is pretty slow at times as well.
    2. When I went to export, the movie was going to me almost 10GB, so I purchased Compressor and in FCP went under FILE, SEND TO COMPRESSOR. I choose a 720P setting and started to process the batch. It took almost 8 hours to compress that footage which brought the file down to 1.5GB which was really great and the quality looks stunning, so I am happy aobut that.
In doing some reseach, I found that upgrading my stock graphics card may be the solution to some of the speed issues in FCPX. I nver gave that a tohught as I am new to the video editing world. I was looking at a
Sapphire HD 7950 3GB MAC Eddition
This seems like to would be a mjor upgrade to my graphic card. So my question is, by upgrading my graphic card woudl this help my issues I described aobuve? I got to image that it could not hurt for sure.
Thnaks for your time in advance.

I hope that other people more knowledgeable can comment on the matter of the graphics card.
I think that 8 hours is way too long for your hardware.
Did you turn App Nap off? If not, do it NOW for FCP X and Compressor.
Select the apps in the Finder, and hit Command I. In the Get Info window, check the box that says "Prevent App Nap".
Also, I think that you could probably do the same export in less time in FCP X itself.
FCP X has several export options. Compressor can be useful for a number of situations, especially for complex workflows, and if several macs can share the workload. I don't think Compressor makes any use of the GPU, so you would probably see no gain from the faster GPU in that export.
In most cases, a single export like yours can be done faster and easier from FCP X itself. FCP X DOES use the GPU.
As a test, I suggest that (after turning off App Nap, as described above) you try the same export from within FCP X.
    File->Share->Master File
and in the Settings choose "Computer", H264 Better Quality and 1280x720.
I bet it will take substantially LESS than 8 hours (maybe close to, or a little above real time at most).

  • Erazer X510 - AMD R9 290 4GB Graphics Card Stopped Working/Responding

    Hi,
    I recently bought a PC from amazon UK, Kindly see the link to view the PC details;
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lenovo-Erazer-Tower-Desktop-Bla...
The PC is a Lenovo Erazer X510
I had it shipped to Kenya and it arrived today. The PC seemed to work fine, I checked if the system recognized all the hardware and it did, including the AMD R9 290 Card (which it recognized). It booted well and was quite fast however it crashed about two times (The PC comes with an overclock button) and I believe it crashed after overclocking using the overclock button and I was barely maxing out the PC - I was only testing to see how Overclock works.
After the last crash, I realized the AMD Radeon graphics card stopped responding, the PC is working however the system no longer recognizes the card anymore.
Kindly advice on how to get the PC to recognize the graphics card again?
    Regards,
    Sam.

Hello, Unfortunately I have a very similar problem with a very similar machine (i7-4770k and R9 290)... https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-E-H-K-M-Q-and-ErazerX/LENOVO-Erazer-X510-crashes-and-restarts-in-game-from-day-1/td-p/2094705 The black screen and reboot happened in game though, never in idle state.I have sent back my machine around the 15th of May and have not received it back yet. The service center informed me that they would send it back unrepaired and I have complained here. No news since then. Good luck. JP

  • Will a discrete graphics card improve editing response?

New install of Prem El 12 on Acer Veriton, i5-2300 CPU @ 2.8 GHz, 4 GB RAM, 1 TB HDD. Integrated Intel HD graphics, 1.74 GB, 1920x1080x60Hz. Windows 7 Pro. I am editing full HD AVCHD files from camcorder. Even after rendering the project I find playing the project in editor is often jerky until it has been run a few times. Also a published AVCHD file of the whole project does not run absolutely smoothly in Wind Media Player or VLC.
What kind of graphics card, if any, would give me much improved response?

Thanks for that great follow up with the news of your Premiere Elements successes.
    Regarding
    1. What do the thin coloured bands - green or orange - above the tracks
    window signify?
Those lines above the Timeline contents are part of an indicator system in which the program alerts you as to whether or not you are looking at the best possible preview of that content in the Edit area monitor. A no colored line or green line situation tells you that you are looking at the best possible preview; whereas, and orange line tells you that you are not looking at the best possible preview, and, if you want one, you need to "render the Timeline" content. This is not render as in export. It is render is in terms of previewing quality. You do not need to do this Timeline rendering in order to more forward in the project, but
it is your window of opportunity to catch a program sooner than later
it is particularly useful when working with titles, transitions, effects, and non native formats.
More about all this if needed. Just know that each time you Timeline render, preview files are automatically generated and stored on the hard drive. Watch out for pile up of those preview files (See LIbraries/Documents/Adobe/Premiere Elements/12.0 and, in the 12.0 Folder, the Adobe Premiere Elements Preview Files Folder. )
    Regarding
    2. Is there a function to alter the gain envelope of an audio track - ie in
the middle of the track, not just the fade in/out function?
I am not sure of your question. But, in version 12,  if you want to vary the properties of Volume across the duration of an audio track, then
adjust Tab/Adjustment Palette/Volume Panel expanded where keyframing opportunities for the Volume:Clip Volume and Volume.Bypass properties are available. Can also do the Volume keyframing at the audio clip rubberband level.
AudioGain is also available under Adjust Tab/Adjustments Palette/AudioGain Panel, but this is not available for keyframing as is Volume property.
For Audio Gain adjustment (normalizing), please see right clicking of the Timeline audio clip and selecting AudioGain. If you wanted to vary the AudioGain in the middle of the audio clip, I would imagine that you could make cuts in the audio to generate a segment there, and then apply the AudioGain adjust to just that one selected cut segment.
Please review and consider and then let us know if any of that worked for you.
    Thank you.

  • IMac 24" (late 2006) graphics card replacement dilemma

    Hi,
I've read many articles on the support communities and other sites regarding the NVIDIA GeForce 7300/7600 card issues with graphical artifacts/freezing video/random lines etc.  Having come to wits end dealing with this, and unfortunately not truely realizing a hardware issue until after my AppleCare expired, I've decided to buy a card and install it myself.  Unfortunately, this has now turned out to be significantly more difficult than first expected.
At this moment a couple of US suppliers have botht the 7300/7600 on back order with Apple.  According to Apple and their suppliers, Apple does not manufacture these cards anymore.  However, they may still have inventory and will only supply those parts to "repair clients".  Apparently, if a supplier or other attempted to purchase this part outright, they couldn't because they're keeping inventory for repairs.  Worse yet, I believe the part if only available to those iMacs purchased in the USA.  Nice.  I live in Canada.
So now what?  Does Apple even have inventory of this part?  And if they do, are they only available to US clients?

    Hi there,
I had exactly the same issue with exactly the same card (7300) on exactly the same iMac. I took my iMac to my local Apple Store here in UK for repair. Before they started the repair, it only took a couple of days for the part to arrive at the store. They fitted it with a 7600 card & all is fine again.
It seems that these cards are fairly easily obtainable via an Apple Store. Have you been in to an Apple Store to discuss?
    Good luck
    Ben

  • How much ram and processing power in my imac will meet my graphic design needs?

    Hi,
I'm in the market for a new imac. I'm trying to figure out how much ram I'll need and which processor will be sufficient for my graphic design needs.
I'm gonna need it to be robust enough to have InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator open at once along with spotify, safari with many tabs open, and a couple other apps including evernote and game from time to time. Also, I'm gonna be managing a good deal of fonts in font explorer. How much ram and processing power will I need in my imac to keep everything snappy with all these apps going at the same time?
Any advice on this would be much appreciated. Feel free to include any other relevant information you think I should know.
    Thanks, Nick

Computers are out of date when you open the box
Ok, getting serious, that iMac should be a viable workhorse for what you want for a good five years, and taht depends on how much ram you put in it, add really fast external storage, and so on.
Didn't throw this in earlier so as to not influence the discussion: my daughter is the senior art director, VP, at a graphics design firm in NYC.  Has been in the business for a number of years.  When she changed out her Mac at work, bought, or company bought, the 27" iMac model just before the latest, with maxed out CPU/GPU, and storage.  They maxed the memory to 32 GB for her, then added a 30" Apple cinema display so she has almost 5' of display in front of her.  There is nothing she cannot have open all spread across that display area.  She works almost exclusively in print media, occassionally condescends to do web stuff.  And has a massive array of RAID drives hanging on it.  But that is a setup an individual would be hard pressed to go with.
At home she uses a MacBook Pro with top cpu and display but that is all.
The point, just how massive do you want to go depends on how fast you have to work; in the office where time is money you need tons of horsepower.  At home, you scale it to your abilitty to juggle other tasks at the same time.
I think your choices have been great, the discussion has focused on what is important and especially what can and cannot be changed in the future.
Best of luck setting this up.
