On-board RAID and PCI RAID controller

Hello everybody,
I am new to the forum. So, please excuse me if that topic was already covered...
I have MSI MAX2-LR (MS-6398E) board. It works just fine, no problem so far. Though I have 2 problems with add-on cards:
1.  I was planning to use on-board RAID and additional PCI RAID controller = FastTrack 100 TX2 to cover 6 hard drives into 2 mirrored sets: 4drives one and 2 drives the other.
It doesn't work! I can use either on-board RAID or PCI RAID. As soon as I have any drive connected to on-board RAID, the PCI RAID disappeares. If I have no drives connected to on-board RAID, I can see both RAID controllers, they have different I/O and IRQs, and PCI RAID is working just fine. If only I connect one drive to the on-board RAID, it gets activated on startup, and the other one disappeares. :O
I believe it's a BIOS bug. I wander, if that can be fixed easily????? :D
2. I have a new Matrox Video card = Parhelia. It doesn't work in AGP slot! System doesn't recognize it, and beeps non-stop. I am dealing with Matrox Tech Support on that matter.  ?(
Maybe, it's a known issue, and somebody can save me time by telling what's that about.
Appreciate any imput. Have a great weekend.!!! :]

Hey I also have the same Raid card and also the Matrox Parhelia, and I see that you also have some problems with the card I got also problems with the card, but they couldnt help me at theire forums (http://forum.matrox.com/mgaforum/Forum10/HTML/005085.html), I hope we have got more luck here  :D

  • RD330 - using PCIe-based SSD and on-board RAID controller at the same time?

I've got a RD330 (4304-E1U) with the on-motherboard RAID controller and an OCZ Z-Drive R4 PCIe-based SSD.  Basically the SSD looks to the system like a PCIe SATA controller with a single SATA disk attached.  If I leave the on-board RAID disabled in the BIOS (Setup -> Advanced -> Sata/SAS Configuration -> Disable SCU Devices=ENABLED), then the system sees the OCZ drive just fine and I can select it as my boot device.  Works like a champ, screaming fast.
I *also* need access to the disks attached to the built-in SAS backplane on the server, but if the on-board RAID is turned off, then you can't access those disks.  When you go into the BIOS setup and turn on the on-board RAID (Setup -> Advanced -> SATA/SAS Configuration -> Disable SCU Devices=DISABLED), then the LSI RAID array configuration shows up during POST (as expected) but the OCZ messages do NOT appear during POST, and the OCZ no longer shows up in the BIOS as a boot device.  It's like the SSD isn't even there when the on-board RAID is turned on.
I don't really need any RAID functionality on those disks, I just need access to them from the OS, but I need to boot from the SSD in the PCIe slot.  Is there a way for both the on-board RAID controller *AND* an additional PCIe disk controller to be active at the same time?

I have had a 2.0 USB hub connected to the USP port on my AEBS for almost a year for a printer and a HD. Initially I had intermittent connectivity to the HD but never the printer. As Apple upgraded the software/firmware for the AEBS, the problems have stopped. Reliability has been 100% for several months. Go for it.

  • MSI K9N2 Diamond 780a & On Board Raid Controller

So like to know anyone would know why Raid 0 setup with 4 Seagate ST3250410AS would have get corrupted BOOTMGR & BCD after few day on idle time. Since I build this system with pair of 9800Gx2 and AMD 955, always had issue with the raid. Just to be getting worst over time. System seem to crash out and this is a clean install of Window 7 64bit with nothing but drivers. Reboot, show only channel 2 SATA drive failed and sit there waiting for me to fix it. Now every drive been tested and two have been replace by Seagate to to rule out two drives. No matter what drive in channel 2 SATA still will fail on that channel. I've already replaced cables on the drive, nothing change it. Seagate no longer willing to work with me saying Nvidia issue. MSI wont support board seeing no longer being made. Video card, CPU, Motherboard all have been replace this year under RMA. So seeing there new parts and clean OS, I can't think of anything on top of my head that would cause this.
Love to know anyone else as had problems with this chipset or think of idea to try.

PSU maybe?  What kind of device are you using (brand & model name)?
If it was PSU, would have lot more issue than Raid.

As stated dosen't matter which of the drives are in channel 2 Sata, it always fail on that channel. All drives been tested, two were replace by Seagate just because I felt they were bad. Had +20k hours on them. Once you power down, the array would come back to normal.

Yeah. Just a thought, are they all jumpered the same? Try SATA 1. And we know Windows 7 has had issues with RAID 0 setups before, so go search for an updated driver.
Lulz, Nvidia hasn't update there drivers since last year. So there no update for 780a chipset. I run a 4 drive setup on MSI 890FX been fine to this day. Seeing only happen when the system in idle, I've believing there some power management kicking in on the chipset, even so I have power profile set to "always" on everything.
I'm to that point were dropping all Nvidia support in my shop. Since 590SLI boards there as been bug and bug with all there chipset and video cards.

Mobile GPU issue since GeForce 8xxx line, just ask HP, Apple, and my 9800m GTS, 480m GTX SLI setup.
Dropping support holder, as we all know BFG and XFX no longer have Nvidia video cards. BFG lost sales over OEM video cards and killed company. XFX started to sell ATI base, then Nvidia wouldn't sell them new Fremi cards. I'm glad I only put MSI video cards in all system I've built for myself and other. BFG no longer up holding to the warranty on there cards.
More work than I need ~sigh~

  • KT266 PRO2 and PCI ATA controller

I have a lot of ide devices so I bought a PCI ide controller years ago. Now I got my little brothers motherboard. MSI KT266 PRO2, and plugged all my stuff into it. When it was time to reinstall Win, but it would not boot the cd, or from floppy. I checked the boot order, all looks fine.
Then I tried to take the PCI IDE controller out, and then it booted my winXP cd fine.
So basically, When the PCI ATA bios is loaded (the card), I'm unable to boot from cd-rom or floppy. Only boot from HDD1 works. So every time I need to reinstall windows, I need to unplug all harddrives from the PCI IDE controller card. Then windows is installed I can plug the harddisks back in...
I can't find an explanation to this...
No problem when the PCI IDE controller is used with 2 other motherboard I have. Latest bios is used on the motherboard and the pci IDE adapter card.
    MSI KT266 PRO2
    AMD athlonxp 1700+
    Sapphire Radeon 9600 PRO
    maxtor ata100 pci controller
    768 MB DDR pc-2100 ram

On the MB controller I have 2 harddrives on primary (one master, one slave), and 1 dvd-drive (master) and 1 cd-recorder (slave) on secondary.
On my ata controller card I have 2 extra harddrives for backup. Both on the IDE1. One as master and the other as slave.
    All drives are properly configured.

  • [VIA] Cannot Boot From SATA PCI Controller With On Board RAID Enabled

    Hi.
I have a KT3 ULTRA 2 with onboard RAID controller. I have installed a SUNIX 2 port SATA PCI Controller which works perfectly & appears in the selectable boot devices.  This is not a problem except for the fact that I have 4 devices on the On-Board Raid Controller.  When the on-board raid controller is enabled, the SATA device dissapears from the boot options & I can no longer boot from the SATA controller.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Many Thanks

    I had already tried that....
I set the boot sequence to use the SATA card & then renabled the on-board raid, but after reboot the sata card is not available as a possible boot device & asks me to insert system disk...even if the boot sequence is set to boot from other devices.
Really annoyying this, looks like I am going to have to get a different motherboard for something so silly.  I am already at the latest bios release.

    Hello akibono
I presume you have installed clean WXP on your notebook and now you want to install all drivers, tools and utilities. Am I right about that?
Anyway, after WXP installation you must install all drivers, tools and utilities in specific installations order. After doing this everything should be OK and every hardware component will be properly configured.
Please install all stuff as follow:
    WXP
    Chipset driver
    Display driver
    Sound driver
    Modem driver
    Storage manager
    LAN driver
    Touchpad driver
    WLAN driver
    Toshiba Assist
    Flash Media driver
    Webcam driver
    Hardware setup
    Controls
    And so on
I hope everything will be OK.

  • H61M-P31 motherboard and RAID Controller

    Hi
I have a pc that I want use as a home server, and has the following hardware
    Mother board: H61M-P31
CPU:  Intel Pentium G620 2.6GHz Dual Core
    Memory: 8GB DDR3
    Hard disks 1x3GB, 2x2GB 1x1GB
    OS: Windows Home Server 2011
I have already made one expensive purchase of a RAID controller that didn’t fit the mother board and don’t want to do that again so I’m asking anyone who has any experience with this mother board  and/or RAID controllers what are my options, ideally I would want a 4port card.
Can anyone advise me on what to do.
    Thanks
    Chris

Was the card you purchased a PCI or PCIe model? if the one you got was PCI then of course it would not fit as there are no PCI slots. Get a PCIe version and it should fit in the lower black PCIe slot.
According to this it's PCI not PCIe

  • Adaptec 51245 PCIe SAS RAID Controller

    Hello
I am looking at running 8x WD RE4 2tb drives Raid 5 or 6  inside a Lian Li PC-A77F Case with an external HP1840 LTO4 tape drive
Would the Adaptec 51245 be the ideal controller for this as the other brands don't seem to support tape?
Or would it be better having two different cards eg Intel RS2BL080 for the raid and LSI SAS3801E for the Tape Drive.
Motherboard at this stage will be a ASUS Rampage 3 Extreme which will also have to provide slots for a capture card and possibly
    a Panasonic PCD35 5 card reader
    Any other suggestions welcome
    Many Thanks
    Martin

Running 2 different raid cards often depends more on the system board's bios than the cards. The most common problem is resource conflicts. With the current boards and PCI-e controllers on both the chipset and the southbrdige, it's alittle easier to do this without running into this problem. Just make sure you install 1 controller first after you update the bios on the board. Get the driver installed and update the firmware on that card before you install the 2nd card. Then update the firmware on that. If you use the component layout in Asus manuals to see which slots are attached to where, then you can make sure you have 1 card on the chipset and 1 on the southbridge.

  • K9A2 Platinum Cannot Use RAID and PCI IDE card [SOLVED]

    Hello,
I am trying to do the following set-up on my K9A2 Platinum, using a Phenom 9600 processor:
    - 2xSATA2 250GB Seagate drives on Promise T3 SATA controller (to be used as RAID 1 devices)
    - 1xSATA DVD-RW on Sb600
    - 2xIDE DVD-RW on onboard IDE
    - One PCI HiPoint RocketRAID ATA100 card (operating in IDE mode) on PCI slot 2 with 1xIDE 40GB hard disk (my Linux partition)
On the BIOS I have enabled the Extra RAID function, in order to enable Promise to work as RAID.
    The system POSTs as follows:
    - Initial detection (CPU, RAM e.tc)
    - RocketRAID gets initialized and detects the IDE disk attached (40GB)
    - Promise RAID tries to detect the disks (the RAID array) and the whole system hangs.
I've tried to relocate the two SATA hard disks to the SB600 controller (SATA 1&2 ports), but the same thing happens (after changing the BIOS to disable extra RAID function and enable RAID mode on onboard SATA SB600). The only way to POST the machine, is to remove the RocketRAID PCI card, but this way I can no longer boot my Linux disk.
Using BIOS 1.2 and 1.3beta 2 (sent to me by MSI support).
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for the replies.
Now, I'm going to surprise you: I managed to make both cards (the Promise and HighPoint) work together! Read how...
Somehow, I got the impression that the problems I had were either caused by the BIOS or the hard disks (the SATA ones). I flashed the motherboard back to the official 1.2, doing a complete BIOS reset (removed the battery) and tried again without the RocketRAID card installed. This time, the Promise BIOS (which btw is an earlier version from the one the 1.3b2 BIOS had) reported that the one SATA drive was malfunctioning (and it was a sealed brand-new Seagate). Removed the drive, installed it on SB600 and SeaTools indeed reported that it was failing (it didn't manage to pass even the quick test...).
Now I was curious: could it be that this - together with the beta BIOS - was the cause of my problems? I installed the other SATA disk to Promise T3 (the red socket) and the controller detected it, but all I could do is to set it up as a RAID 0 array (which pretty much does nothing). Next, I installed the RocketRAID also together with the IDE Linux disk and the system detected both disks; I can boot Linux fine and enter both the RocketRAID BIOS and Promise T3 BIOS. I can delete and recreate the array in Promise T3 as I please, but due to the fact that I only have one SATA disk now, I get limited options (RAID 0 and JBOD).
Is it safe to assume that since the Promise BIOS is working with the RocketRAID installed, that my SATA RAID controller is working?
Tomorrow, I shall return the SATA drive to the store I bought it and get a replacement, so that I can set up my RAID 1.
The plan is to have Linux boot from the IDE (I've never managed to set up a Linux disk to boot from RAID) where Windows Server 2003 will boot from RAID.
Will keep you posted about the progress I make.
BTW Bas, I'm sorry I couldn't make out much of your brainstorming
Regarding the Promise controller: the board has a Promise chip right above the SATA ports, which has the number 42819 on it. I can also verify that both SB600 RAID and Promise T3 RAID have EXACTLY the same BIOS menu interface (the only differences are the texts "ATi SB600" and "Promise T3" on the menus, plus that the SB600 has also an option to securely erase the drives which Promise does not have). Are you suggesting that the SB600 RAID is actually the Promise T3? I do not know if it would be possible to have BOTH RAID controllers (SB600 and T3) working at the same time (I do not have enough disks to try...).

    Hi,
Was the card previously working in that machine? If it was and you have a G5 tower you could try the card in there. Here is a list of Apple fibre cards and cables which show what's compatible with what. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1769
The card should appear in the System Profiler under Fibre Channel and PCI Cards.

  • PPC G5 compatibility of Areca PCIE RAID controller arc-1280?

Subject: Mac compatibility of Areca ARC-1280 24 ports PCI Express to SATA II RAID adapter.
At Areca's Internet site ( www.areca.com.tw) consumers can read at pages concerning arc-1280 card that: « The SATA RAID controllers support broad operating systems including ... MAC ... ».
At Specifications page, under: Operating system, it is written: « Mac OS X (no_bootable) ».
Absolutely no other warning appear about MAC owners.
So, if you are just a basic computer consumer, you are now strongly tempted to believe that if you got a MAC with PCIExpress technology & OS X, you can safely buy arc 1280 PCIE.
This is because (nearly) everyone knows that in real pragmatic actual life OS X exclusively runs on Apple Mac machines. In the case of arc-1280, as it is a PCIExpress adapter, only two Apple Mac models are possible: the very recent MACPro (Intel cpu based) & late 2005 PPC G5 dualcore (IBM cpu based). As Areca mentions nowhere any warning between MACPro & G5 dualcore, only owners of either of those PCIE machines may logically have the opportunity to run OS X with an arc-1280 connected!
If you are a little bit more paranoïd, before to buy such an expensive adapter, you will check if there are other stuffs to confirm your deductions. You then will find Areca's online user's manual 3.2, where it is stated that a bios configuration utility, contained into card's firmware, is « OS independant » & can be accessed at startup by pressing TAB or F6. About « MAC X » driver installation, user is invited to follow a readme.txt (that in fact does not exist nowhere). It is the same for archttp proxy server installation, which is also asserted to support Mac OS.
Moreover, a Mac driver is freely downloadable online, called arcmsr-1.3.1.pkg. Now you are ready to trust!
Having arc-1280 plugged, you start your Mac (happy to hear that card beep after startup) then install driver (the same is present online & on Areca's companion CD). A text appear:
« This driver supports...arc 1280...PCIE... Please note that this is a pre-release version of the driver for testing purpose, and is *NOT * for general distribution. ». But installation completes succesfully and you pay no attention to this frightening sentence hidden into Areca's driver package.
What then arise when you have your computer restarted? Nothing: except the beep at startup, Areca's high end Raid controller simply do not appear anywhere into Mac OS X!
As I cannot afford paying more than 1200 euro for just a startup beep, I decided to require help from distributor & Areca's very enigmatic support. Lastly distributor decided to try with another arc-1280 which was as useless on my Mac than the first one. I again protested, Areca's support seeming to have totally resign for quite a lot of time now, distributor blaming me not to have been carefull enough ?!
Distributor ask me now to re-send back the card. They will try to get their money back from Areca, then maybe will I have my money back ? They asked me to write a letter with a description of the problem & why I want a full refund.
This is now done, hoping this will help to avoid further misinformation.

    MacGurus PCIE which are supported.
I saw the Areca reviewed xbitlabs
AMUG http://www.amug.com does great reviews of Mac compatible drives, enclosures, and controllers.

I'm having the same problem but I can't switch my drives. I have my 2 200 gig maxtors full of data that i can't let go of. I've installed a new silicon images pci card with 2 sata channels. if i hook up the drives both bios recognize the drives correctly but it tell me invalid system disk. pretty sure that it's reading the pci card, not seeing a os installed and not even looking at my onboard controller. I need some help, I had one of my five Xserve RAID boxes fail. The upper controller card needed to be replaced and so we replaced it. But now only one of my volumes is loading and I am seeing the following error in my Console.
7/18/12 9:23:18.550 AM Xsan Admin: ERROR: duplicate LUN label RAID1-Left1
This raid box holds three LUNs. the left is split into two with one being the metadata / Journal for the main volume and the 2nd being the same for my secondary volume. The right side of this box is the second volume while the remaining 4 RAID boxes are my main volume. Here is the rub, the main volume is using the left1 LUN and the secondary is left2. The left2 is the one that is not working and when I go into the LUN info the WWN number does not match the actual id on the raid box.
    HELP!!!!
    Thanks,
    Kevin Rosenthal

Did you try turning it off and on again? I mean, the full SAN shutdown/startup: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4027
You're probably seeing "duplicate LUN labels" because the MDC has seen two LUNs with the same label but different serial numbers since it has been online. The serial number (which I think is based off the WWN) would have changed when the RAID controller changed. A reboot should fix that specific error message.
If the volume still doesn't start after rebooting, then you would want to check the cvlog for that volume.
