On-board Sound Blaster seemingly non-existent on K8N SLI Platinum

Hi,
I have a K8N SLI Platinum motherboard fitted with an Athlon 64 3500+ processor. My problem is that the on-board Creative Sound Blaster refuses to work. In the BIOS there is no mention of it under 'Intergrated Peripherals' as there should be, and attempts to install the latest drivers (on Windows XP x64) results in the installation program telling me I do not have a Sound Blaster. I have upgraded to the latest BIOS.
I guess this is an issue with the power supply, since I can see no mention on the box of it providing a -5V supply. Can anyone confirm that the Sound Blaster will start working if I buy a new PSU with a -5V supply.
Many thanks.

Check out the pics on this thread. https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=81764.0
If your board has that module then there is another problem. If it does not have it then the powersupply not having the -5v rail is probably the reason.
Good Luck

  • MSI K8N SLI Platinum sound problem

I've recently installed Windows vista anda i have a problem with my onboard sound, in this case the SB lIve 24! that comes with the msi k8n sli platinum board, i've tried the soundblaster beta drivers but they didn't work, so if anyone knows where i could find a driver to solve this problem, it would be nice
    Thanks for your help!!

This is the 32bit version of the driver of k8n-sli Platinum mainboard (I have one)... if you want the 64 bit version, just search in the creative support site.  Enjoy!

  • Very, very low sound from MSI K8N SLI Platinum

The sound from my MSI K8N SLI Platinum nForce 4 is so low that i must set the volume control on max and the speakers on max to hear anything. I tried other speakers with the same result. The speakers are amplified.
    What can i do?

Well for a start you could search the forum as this problem is now well known. I'm not getting at you but I know how frustraing it is wanting someone to respond with an answer, and you don't have to wait if the problem has already been discussed!
The problem is that MSI decided to specify that the 24 pin supply must have -5v to support the creative chip. This is in contradiction to atx 2.2, and other PSU specs for 24pin supplys, which say the pin in question is NC (no connection).
What you need is a dual standard 20/24 pin supply.
Theres is a FAQ about this on the diamond forum, but I'm not sure if unregistered Platinum SLI users can read them anymore!
According to the FAQ MSI are promising US diamond users the chance to RMA their diamond boards when modified boards whcih don't require the -5v supply are availble. This isn't much use to us european Platinum SLI users.
I have a Tagan 480w which is dual standard 20/24 pin supply.

  • Troubles with SB Blaster onboard sound (MSI K8N SLI PLATINUM)

Other signals are completely mute (mic, line in, line out)

well unfortunately i have a 20 pin power supply but i took the 20pin to 24pin device Doesn't it work correctly?
The 24 pin spec requires the -5v pin to have no connection. If you use a 20 to 24 pin adapter lead the -5v pins are not connected. You can try plugging the 20 pin plug into the 24 pin socket offset to one side. Many report having no problesm doing this. Alternatively you can try adding you own lead to the adapter to connect the -5v pins.

  • K8N Sli Platinum sound problems

    Hi.
I'll get right to it: the sound is very faint and if i turn the volume up it sounds like it's clipping.
I've had the mobo for about a year now and this problem appeared about two weeks ago, and it is not because of the lack of a -5 V pin, because the psu has one and i also saw the MSI voltage converter near the second PCI-E slot. There are no device conflicts, and it sometimes started to sound ok but i noticed no pattern.
If anybody has an idea, please shout...

Does it happen with headphones too?
yes, it happens with anything plugged in either of all 4 outputs (in 7.1 mode).
The last driver i had installed is: Creative Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit and Sound Blaster Audigy LS driver 1.04.0055 (Aug 05), off the creative site, and it worked fine before.

  • K8N SLI Platinum -5V sound Fix

    Hi Guys
Ok i purchased this board with an Enermax 600W Noisetaker PSU. Then i found i had rally bad sound from the onboard creative chip. Sound was low in volume and alot of hiss, bad sound.
Found out my PSU had NO -5V supply to the MB. SO replaced with a Tagan 480W PSU (Code TG480-U01) and all works just great now.
SO this board DOES Require a -5V DC supply to the Motherboard from the PSU in order for the onboard creative sound chip to work.
2 PSU's that are recommended are the Tagan 480W TG480-U01  and the OCZ PowerStream 520w
    Good luck
    Paul

get the OCZ...i for one can hands down say they are the best PSU on the market right now, beautiful, incredible power...stable...and quiet...u cant ask for anything more....GET IT.

  • [Sound Blaster ZX]Control Panel takes 6 MINUTES to load and is nearly unusable?!

    All,
Yesterday I took the plunge and picked up a Sound Blaster ZX to replace my old Audigy Platinum. Unfortunately I've been met with a series of problems that leave me with a bad taste in my mouth about my purchase.
The driver install seemed to go well though it was a little disconcerting when the 'Check for update' button in the auto update tool that runs right after install was grayed out. I noticed that I was not getting sound out of the 5.1 analog inputs that I had connected up to my Logitech Z680 speaker system. So I checked the system tray and there was a new SB icon there, that was clearly a utility to get to the configuration. Knowing this was probably the right place to start fiddling with the settings, I clicked it. And waited. And waited. And waited some more.
Strange I thought, so I checked the Windows task manager and located the Sound Blaster control panel in the list of running processes. I waited another minute or so and still nothing was displaying. So I killed the process in task manager, located the shortcut to the SB ZX control panel in the start menu and launched it. Again with the waiting. I immediately took to google and started researching a potential problem with this card.
As I was searching and had forgotten that I had launched the Control Panel, it suddenly showed up on my screen. Wow I thought, that took a while to load. I then proceeded to try to navigate the various areas of the Control Panel application. I was immediately concerned when I noticed that the app was not responsive and appeared to be frozen. I decided to patiently wait to see if it would wake up. Fortunately it did, though only after waiting for several minutes. I then attempted to close the Control Panel app, which it did after several more minutes of waiting.
I thought maybe there was some anomalous process running so I decided to try the Control Panel from a fresh boot. After my machine had started up, I clicked the SB icon in the system tray again, only this time I was going to time it. I recorded that it took 6 FULL MINUTES from the time I clicked the icon until the application displayed on my screen. Further, the lag of switching between the various areas of the application was as high as 3-4 minutes. In essence this software is completely unusable.
I decided to try the TOSLINK connections between my speaker system and the soundcard to see if it would respond better. I set the mixer settings(via the built in Windows mixer) and I could get it to produce sound albiet only in two channel stereo. Progress, or so I thought. So I switched back to the analog connections and there was no difference in the response of the control panel. I had found some instances where an onboard or video card based HDMI audio driver might interfere with the card. I had long since disabled the on board sound of my Asus P5Q Pro motherboard via the BIOS so there were no drivers hanging around from it. I then took a look at the device manager and disabled the ATI High Defintion Audio device that was likely part of my SAPPHIRE 100259-1GL Radeon HD 4870 video card. This had no effect, I was still getting no sound from my speakers and the interface is abysmally lagged.
I then took the following steps to no avail:
Uninstall all Soundblaster ZX drivers and software
    Restart machine
Install the updated Soundblaster ZX software from the Creative Support site: http://support.creative.com/Products...T=CategoryID:1
Nothing I have tried has resolved the issue with the virtually unusable lag that occurs when trying to run the Control Panel and/or configure the Soundblaster ZX or the amount of time it takes to start up.
Anyone experienced this and know of a fix or a remedy? I really want to enjoy this sound card.
    **UPDATE**
I just wanted to post up and say that I solved this issue by first uninstalling all drivers for both the SB ZX and my Radeon graphics card. I then used Driver Fusion(http://treexy.com/products/driver-fusion) to perform a registry/file cleanup on all files associated with AMD graphics cards and Creative sound cards. Then I installed the drivers & software for the SB ZX from the CD that came in the box. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the software was responsive and the hardware was fully functioning. I then installed the software for my Radeon card however this time, I selected a custom install and chose NOT to install the HDMI audio driver. I don't know if this was key or not but at any rate, after the graphics card drivers and software was installed I am happy to report that the SB ZX software remained responsive and fully functioning.
I then updated the SB ZX software to the version linked above(1.0.22) from the version that ships on the CD - 1.0.13 and strangely the Cinematic tab disappeared from the Pro Studio control panel. Some research revealed that this tab is dependent on the Creative Labs Extras which seemed to have gotten nuked during the update. I was able to bring back the Cinematic tab by re-installing the extras from the CD, however it only installed the Dolby Digital Live component. DTS connect is still missing. I am going to do a little more research to see what I can do to get it back.
Hope this helps someone who runs into this same predicament.

Any news about the SoundBlaster Zx Linux drivers? Currently, there's no way to get even the most basic sound of it on Linux.

  • How to install the olds special effects of voices EAX in the Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty Platin

    Dear forum Members:?
Today I acquired the new Sound Blaster X-Fi Fataty Champion Series Platinum, but I have taken myself the surprise that the sound effects EAX - that in?the old card included voice effects like? For my it is very important that EAX has those?special sound effects that he had the old one?version of Audigy, since with them we took place?voices distorted in a radial program that?we transmit every Friday for Internet, since 6 years old.
Without those effects, a complete block of the program - the humor block-, it won't be been able to make,?and this will be a great loss for our?transmission and our auditors.
For it, I request them earnestly that me?indicate how to be able to install the old effects?special of EAX, particularly the Voices?

I request everyone them to assist?this request?to the brevity?possible, since really we need the effects?special EAX to work in our radio.

    Bredbandsbandit,
The headsets for it will need to use /8'' minijack connecters (or up to /4'' if you get the Platinum/Fatalty/Elite Pro versions). USB headsets use their own software codec, basically making them software based sound devices which would bypass all of the advantages of the X-Fi.
A really great headset choice for this would be the Creative ProGamer Headset NC22 however if you are looking for headphones I have used the Creative HN-505 Noise Cancelling Headphones with the X-Fi (I hope to have some impressions up in a few days) and they work absolutely amazingly. Basically you would do best with closed ear headphones with a good quality microphone.

  • Sound blaster problems

Ok.. i just got myself a MSI K8N Sli Platinum motherboard. I've installed windows cp prof. and  the audio drivers and everything went good, but i don't have SOUND!! No sound at all...no sound in winamp, no sound in media player no sound...:(( What;s the problem??? In device manager everything is ok...

Could you please tell us whether you use the front panel audio JAUDIO connected to your case, or  just use the back panel Audio on the mainboard? If you are using the front panel audio, could you please check whether your audio on the mainboard and the audio connector on your case are compliant to the same specification? You know there are two specification: AC'97 and Azalia. The two specifications are not compatible. That is to say if your audio connector on your mainboard is compliant with AC'97, they your case should also is identical. The other is similar.
If you are using the back panel audio, my suggestion is updating the audio driver to have another try. And be sure the volume is not muted.

  • MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI sound needs -5V; newest Antec 550W has no -5V rail

I came within a whisker of ordering a non-returnable  3700 Venice, MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI mobo and an upgraded Power Supply, Antec's newest 550W PS the TP2-550 EPS12V ($117).  This has dual 2x24pin 12V 19A rails and is touted as the new V2.0 EPS12V/ATX12v compatible power supply for high performance SLI systems.  By accident I came across a page at MSI for this mobo
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mai...ail.php?UID=641
At the end is this warning:  MSI Reminds You...
    • For this model, you must use a Power Supply which has a -5V pin supply. Also, the users manual which I downloaded on Pg 2-10 says the same thing
The above Antec PS specs do not  show a -5V rail, nor does an Enermax 600W I looked at.  The V2.0 specs for ATX12v which added 2x24pin 12V rails dropped -5V rail from the spec and it appears MSI is not conforming to the spec (See Antec response at end) None of the web sites selling these PS & mobos contain any warning.  I vaguely recall from a forum a while back it may have something to do with the Soundblaster system in the mobo.
    http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=22551 (click specifications)
Isn't this a major showstopper which is going to cause a lot of grief for those of us upgrading to SLI systems using this mobo and upgrading our PS to the newest & best power design?  We won't know the PS won't work until we build the system.
    Regards, Ron
    Antec reply to me:
    >>>>Thanks for the link. Since MSI's website does state the motherboard needs the -5v, the True550EPS12V will not work with this motherboard. The Standard (http://enhanceusa.com/documents/atx12v_v2.01.pdf) has removed the use for the -5v rail and it is no longer needed. MSI has not manufactured that motherboard to the Standard. Finding an ATX12V v2.0 power supply with the -5v might be hard to find. You should contact MSI for a compatibility list of power supplys that were tested to work with the K8N SLI Platinum.

Wow!!  syar2003 thanks for that post.  I've spend an hour going through it &  fasteddies links.  Now I are a power expert.  The dual rail argument is enough for me to go back to the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI with one of the single rail PS -5V units listed by fasteddie. The only question left now refers to computerpro3  recommendation on ultra power supplies for SLI
    >>I quite simply wouldn't dream of putting anything else in my machine. Keep in mind, this section is for 2x 6800 models, not the 6600's which most any good psu will handle (like Antec Neopower, ocz 520, etc). . Pc Power and Cooling 510 Deluxe SLI edition (refer to list)
    2. Zippy/Emacs 550-700w models
    3. OCZ 600w (personally I would get the pcp&c for the price, but it's been proven here, so I'll be fair...).
These are really high end, expensive and only 3-4 choices. Since I'm getting one 6800GT and eventually another & possibly eventually a 4800 X2, I was hoping the OCZ 520W would do it but computerpro3 says Powermaster 520 isn't good enough for SLI.  I found that there is an OCZ 600W ATX12 dual rail which surprisingly has a -5V rail needed for K8N Neo4 SLI Soundblaster.  Will this meet computerpro3's preference for a high end PS for SLI systems even though I'm losing the 1 rail advantage.  Maybe the 600 Watts just overwhelms the 1 rail/2 rail question.
Thanks again for the teriffic help
    Regards, Ron
Wondering what you settled on.  I got the Antec TP550 and it's flawless on the board.  I even have the older 20pin model which works perfectly (including sound).  If you really wanted what I would consider to be a top dog (pcpower and cooling), and find the -5v rail missing, all you have to do is place a phone order and request they add a -5v rail.  It's a minimal cost and a total solution for having everything.  Just my $0.02

  • S/PDIF options for PCI Express X-Fi Xtreme Audio sound card non-existant!

Hey guys, I've been searching around for this for a while now and I still come up with anything...
I currently have a PCI Express Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio sound card installed in my PC, and this cound card has a built-in optical output port. I have been trying to set the sound card to use this port and I still can not find anyway around it.
I have searched the support pages and they always go back and say that I can enable audio on that port using the Digital I/O icon in the media console (I'm in Entertainment mode btw, doesn't seem like I can change that). However, I don't have that icon present in my media console. I tried upgrading drivers, updating software but still to no avail
So right now i'm running Windows XP (32-bit) and what seem to be the latest software and drivers for this card, and none of this is making any sense to me and so I believe that I am going mad!
I am honestly starting to believe that the port is just there for decoration...

This seems to be a fairly common issue across out in the market.
Do you not think it would be worth while chasing this down internal to Creative and sharing the solution with everyone?
Pointing us one at a time to support for what should be readily available drivers doesn't make a lot of sense.

  • NI Elvis throwing error 7, NI 488: Non existent board, NI Elvis traditional throwing error 2, NI 488: Write detects no Listeners when attempting to launch labview

I wrote a program on a laptop in our lab that used both the NI Elvis power supplies and DMM.  On the laptops in the lab, which connected to NI Elvis through a board in the NI-PXIe device the program worked perfectly both as a vi and as an executable.  The program needed to be put on some computers in another lab for student use with a different version of labview, and everything worked except for the variable power supplies.  I activated debugging and it reported Error 7 at New File, NI 488: Non-Existent Board.  After attempting to trouble shoot this and not finding any helpful results I attempted to rewrite the program on the computers directly, since I could only put the program on the computers as an executable since it was written in 8.6 and the computers only have 8.0 and 8.2.  To begin I was going to launch labview from NI Elvis to use one of the example codes as a base for my program.  When attempting to do this I got Error 2 with the possible causes being Labview memory full and NI 488: Write detected no listeners.  My question is are the two errors related, and how can I fix these errors?  All the NI Elvis software is 2.0, the original program was written in Labview 8.6, the computers have Labview 8.0 and 8.2 on them.  The NI Elvis devices are connected directly through the computers, rather than through another device, I'm not sure if this might be causing some obscure hardware issue.

    Hello Chris,
It looks like this error is associated with not having administrator privileges. Take a look at this other forum post for more information:
    http://forums.ni.com/t5/Academic-Hardware-Products-NI/Error-2-when-starting-LabVIEW-from-ELVIS-Instr...
If you can log in as an administrator you should be able to avoid getting error 2 when you launch LabVIEW from NI Elvis. Alternatively, you can upgrade to NI-ELVIS 3.0, because the issue is fixed in that version of NI-ELVIS. You can find this by going to ni.com/support and searching for "NI-ELVIS 3.0"

Try deauthorizing the computer even if you haven't authorized it. If you've already authorized it, deauthorize it twice and then authorize it again.

  • On board sound on GA-Z77X-UD3H vs Sound Blaster X-Fi Extreme Audio

Christmas last year I upgraded to a new computer and I'm wondering if I would gain any audio performance or sound quality by moving my old Sound Blaster X-Fi Extreme Audio card to my new computer which is presently running with on-board sound.
Here's the link to the motherboard model I have: http://ca.gigabyte.com/products/prod...px?pid=4441#sp
    The audo is listed as:
    1.VIA VT2021 codec
    2.High Definition Audio
    3.2/4/5.1/7.1-channel
    4.Support for S/PDIF Out
Would it be worth it even with this old sound card? Or does the new on-board sound quality beat the old sound cards of yesterday? Also, yes I do play a lot of new generation games.

The X-FI Extreme Audio does not have an X-FI chip. It is an Audigy 2 chip with software emulation to come close to the sound capabilites of an X-FI chip based card. There is a lot of information about it on the web, Creative has taken quite a PR hit because of the comments by the CEO at that time. I don't know if he is still the CEO nor do I really care.
