On boot after improper shutdown, no automatic device check any more
Several times I have to shut down with the hardware because of the f**king intel driver freezing the X server. Until a few days ago, at boot time the / device was automatically checked, but now I just get "enter root password for maintenance" and I have to rum fsck by hand (and sometimes fsck does it in no time without any interaction from me), and reboot again.
Why isn't the device check automatically forced any more? Can I fix that?
Thank you very much in advance.
Same complaint. In my case thunderstorms are the usual cause. The error is the "superblock is in the future" or something like that. In the past "check forced" is triggered automatically. Now it switches to single user mode. I just do "control-d" and reboot and this time "check forced" is triggered. Would be good if there is a way to get back the old behaviour instead of requiring manual intervention. I don't usually turn on the monitor for my server.

Unable to execute update commands after improper shutdown
Hi!
It sounds a little strange.
I am unable to execute update commands from my application. My machine was shutdown improperly. Then I loaded the datastores again. I was able to execute select commands but unable to execute update commands. It was working fine before shutdown.
Regards
/AhmadHi Chris!
SQLExecute method of ODBC is returning -1.
I have checked the syntax of the query its also correct. I am also very confused on it why is this happening. If I execute the update command from ttisql it works ok.
The code is the same that we discussed in our previous conversation.
The steps I did after improper shutdown:
1. Started TimeTen daemon >ttdaemonadmin -start
2. Loaded the Data store >ttAdmin -ramLoad spiderM
3. Executed the code
The output of ttstatus is as follows:

Boot fails after improper shutdown
A few months ago, my Powerbook G4 Titanium began failing to boot into 10.4 after any improper shutdown---power failure, force restart, etc.
It would begin booting, the little circle would start to spin, and then the thing would just shut off. No error, no message.
The only solution was to pull out my Norton Systemworks CD, use it to boot into OS9, and then restart into 10.4.
Any help in figuring out what's up would be greatly appriciated.Norton Systemworks was actually probably the cause at one point. It is not compatible with Mac OS X in its Disk Doctor or Speed Disk module.
You should only use these utilites:
1. A backup utility before any other as my backup FAQ says:
http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
2. And if your data is backed up and won't boot after an improper shut down, try repairing your directory with utilities known to work as my FAQ explains:
http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
The only elements of Systemworks that are even remotely safe for use with Mac OS X are Retrospect for backup, and Anti-virus for locating Windows viruses on your Mac that you may transfer to Windows users. Everything else, you should throw away from the Systemworks bundle. -
Mac Pro won't boot after forced shutdown
Hi all, hopefully someone will be able to help with this.
This is a Mac Pro (don't have the exact spec right now, but will have later, I think it's a dual), which is used to run ProTools. It has no internet or network connections.
It's running OS X 10.5.8 and has been for quite a while with no problems. Nothing new has been installed recently (hardware or software).
The other night it was playing back a ProTools session and recording a mix of the result when it started behaving strangely. When ProTools is recording, it creates a waveform display of the recording as it goes, and this suddenly started being corrupted by what appeared to be bits of a photograph or video image. The owner tried to hit "Stop", but nothing would work. Mouse still moved, but no button response, keyboard shortcuts ineffective, and Force Quit did nothing, so in the end he had to kill it by holding down the power button.
Since then it won't boot normally, though it will boot into Safe Mode with no problem.
On a "normal" startup, it powers up, goes through the grey screen/Apple logo/spinning thing stage on the left monitor, then that one goes blue, then both monitors go blue for a few seconds and finally both screens go black, with a mouse pointer in the top left of the left screen. You can move the mouse all over both screens (though if you wait a few seconds it leaves a copy of the pointer in the top left), but that's as far as it gets. Disk activity continues for a while (maybe a minute or so) after the screens go to black, and the spinning rainbow thing comes and goes, but it then seems to give up.
Here's what I've tried so far:
Boot into Safe Mode - no problem
Verify disk using Disk Utility - no problem
Repair permissions - loads of screwed up stuff, all with "permission should be ?-----" . Repair didn't work. Finally fixed these by running the 10.5.8 combo updater twice (known issue with this updater), then repairing again. Permissions now come up clean.
Cleared all caches etc. using Cocktail - slight improvement. Before this it was sticking on the one blue screen stage.
Got rid of a few corrupt preference files using Cocktail (all last modified years ago) - no difference.
Reset PRAM and MBC - no difference
Tried booting with everything disconnected except one screen, keyboard and mouse - no difference.
I'm going over later to see if reseating cards/removing memory etc. will make any difference, and to see if it will fire up fom it's original 10.4.? CD.
Beyond that, I'm kind of out of ideas, so I figured I'd see if anyone else had any!
Below is (what I think!) is the relevant bit of the log file, showing a failed boot, forced power off and reboot intoSafe Mode.
Any clues to corrupt files etc. in there?
Brian

Yes, I did resolve it - it was the graphics card. Changed that, updated OS X and it was done.
I can't now remember exactly which card I used, and I'm away at the moment so I can't get to the infomation, but I do remember that it was a full length card with a large heatsink, and was a bit of a pig to squeeze into the chassis!
Had to buy an adaptor for the second monitor connection, but that didn't cause any hassle. I got the card and cable from the local Apple Store.
It also theoretically needed a later version of OS X than was already there, but since it allowed me to boot off the CD, that didn't matter (and it worked with the old one anyway, as it turned out).
Oh, and also of course, although it's a bog standard PC card, you have to pay way over the odds for it because it has to have different PROMS for a Mac. (Thank you Apple.) Just part of the price we all have to pay for using Macs.
I seem to remember that there was a certain amount of dancing involved in upgrading the OS afterwards (might have had to do one step twice), but nothing that unusual.
Hope this helps,
All the best,

System preferences shot after Security Update 2006-008 - no sound any more
All sorts of strange problems after running the 2006-008 security update, yet only affecting one my two MacMini:
System Preferences completely "shot", with the Date&Time item/icon looking very odd.
The little flag for language/keyboard setting and date/time did not show any more in the top menu bar -- basically everything left side of the blue Spotlight magnifying glass icon was gone.
Also Safari much more prone to quit.
Managed to delete some prefs and cached stuff and to replace the System Preferences application with the one from the other (working ok) Mac.
(I wish such components were available on the web!)
However: Currently I get no sound whatsoever. When I check the option to have the little speaker symbol displayed in the menu bar it shows. But as soon as I click it once, it vanishes from the menu bar.
In the Sound window, I have Volume set to full, yet everything is greyed out, "Sound off" is checked without my doing, while "Display sound volume in the menu bar" unchecks itself everytime(!)
And, very odd: While resetting PRAM and the fsck-routine working ok (no problems found) and disk utility claiming to have repaired all permissions, I can not run a reset of Open Firmware/nvram with the O-F-Apple-Alt key combination (I'm using an original Apple USB Keyboard for this, since I'm aware that my 3rd party keyboards from Logitech and Microsoft often refuse to perform such kind of "low level" tasks).

"Re-apply the Mac OS X 10.4.8 combo updater Once again, re-application of the current combination updater (Mac OS X 10.4.8 for PowerPC or Intel) has proven useful in the case of Security Update 2006-008. Doing so overwrites potentially problem-causing files".
while it is widely known that the folks from redmond do release software before all the bugs are removed, i was not aware before that apple is following the same approach: using their customers as guinea pigs when it comes to updates. there is plenty of reports on MacFixIt about all sorts of troubles with previous apple os updates.

[SOLVED] Unable to boot after CLI shutdown

But the PC does not power off, it hangs at the last message and I had to press the power off button.
When I started the PC again I got plenty of errors of type “failed to mount /boot “, “Dependency failed for local file systems” and so on.
Then, I boot from CD and changed root to try to mount the existing partitions of my HD:
/dev/sda1 --> boot
/dev/sda2 --> swap
/dev/sda3 --> root
/dev/sda4 --> home
Partitions were successfully mounted
What I did next was to install again the bootloader (syslinux) and try to reboot the system
This time I got the following boot sequence:
Booting the kernel
:: running early hook [udev]
:: running hook [udev]
:: Triggering uevents...
:: running hook [keymap]
:: Loading keymap...done.
:: performing fsck on ‘/dev/sda3’

Bailing out, you are on your own. Good luck.
sh: can’t access tty; job control turned off
[rootfs /] #
And the cursor gets stuck at the rootfs promtpt, no chance to type anything ...
I’ve googled for this error and came up with this link: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=146388
But editing the kernel parameters as stated in the link did not fix my problem, it just brought me back to the situation where it failed to mount the local filesystems
I installed archlinux & KDE from scratch again . But performing a CLI shutdown got me into the very same problem again ....
I’ve revised the mkinitcpio.conf and I seem to have all the hooks (using the default config by the way). ¿Could be related to KDE?
No idea how to proceed now.
EDIT: corrected typos

Preventing app relaunch on boot after scheduled shutdown?
Hi—
I have my Mac(Book Pro) scheduled to shut down at night, and restart each morning. After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I'm noticing that whatever apps were open at shutdown are re-opening at launch. The "reopen windows" checkbox is NOT checked when I restart, either manually or via the schedule.
How can I make sure that the Finder and other assigned Login Items are the only things to launch when I log in?
Thanks.Hi,

Macbook air doesn't wake up after improper shutdown
Hi guys,
I've had this issue for couple times in the past 8 months.
I've consulted Apple support but doesn't seem helpful at all.
They took my MacBook Air for invenstigation for over a week and returned and concluded no issue found.
Hence I had to consult genius on the forum.
I seldomly had this issue, my MacBook Air 2012 just shuts while it's in use, or while it's asleep, and I couldn't wake it up.
It looked like dead and nothing turned it back on, keyboard nor pwoer button.
I could only to wait for another 10 or 15 minutes, and then press the power button again.
Usuallys it comes back from a restart and return to the login menu.
After I log in, it shows there was an inproper shutdown.
This kinda annoys me as I don't know if there's going to be any potential issue after my warranty expires. (still 4 months left)
After suggestion would be much appreciated.Hi all,
Thanks for the help. Sorry for the late reply as I was away from Internet access for the past week.
I couldn't reproduce this at will. It happened again this morning.
I was pretty sure I had the power connected, lid closed and connected to my HDMI monitor and USB mouse and keyboard. I left the MacBook Air on when I went to bed, and I had power went sleep after an hour in the energy setting.
When I resumed my computer by pressing keys couple of times (strange, it doesn't wake my computer up with one press) on my USB keyboard, my computer went straight into the login screen. I knew it was shutting down again.
I just did reset SMC but I don't think it helps. I'll monitor it for another week.
I did have the crash log and will send to Apple Support for further investigation.
I'll post it here just in case anyone is interested.

My wife did an improper shut down by holding the power key while something was working on it. She is running mavericks on the system. Now it will start to boot and shut down when progress bar gets half way. Disk utility says it can not fix problems, and when I try to reinstall mavericks from disk utility, it either says hd is locked, or it won't show me hd.
We have no system disk, so how can I fix this?OS X- Gray progress bar appears under Apple logo during startup
OS X v10.6- Gray progress bar appears under Apple logo during startup
You may end up having to erase the drive and reinstalling OS X:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless. -
Report after improper shutdown never works (ok, worked twice)
Hi,
In the past three years, after 62 freezes, 10 kernal panics and other problems, I got my second window from the OS after rebooting, that says something like, the system did not shut down properly; would I like a report (or report it to Apple)? I clicked on report. Nothing happened. This has happened one time before. It too did nothing. I remember in the old OS 9 days that I would get messages all the time when recovering from a freeze, that the OS hadn't been shut down properly.
Shouldn't this work? Does it work for anyone else? As I say, It has only shown up twice in the past three years despite all these freezes that have caused the OS to not be shut down properly.
(I am a page or two away in my computer diary from posting more on all the freezes, kernal panics and other OSX problems I've had in the past three years. That will be a separate post.)
Thanks for any info.
John LNo, the computer was not being used during the last 3 freezes (and 1 kernal panic). I couldn't tell what time it froze last night but I had gone to bed, so some time between 1 and 9am. Previous to that, it froze at 5:42 am on Tues, 5/6, had a kernal panic at 3:56 am on Sun, 5/4 and froze when I was awake but not using it on Thurs, 4/24. Other recent freezes before these took place while I was using it for various things for at least a few of them, not going back too far...
It is online all the time. I just dim the screen, mute it and close all apps when I go to bed. OSX's firewall is always on and internet sharing always off.
I've looked into this in the past and never got too far. Things would clear themselves up soon enough. While I would like to minimize these problems, I will post a thread on this when my diary fills up, a few pages from now. So, we can wait 'til that happens to really dig into it.
I'd be curious if others have problems with this "report" thing.
Cheers and thanks.

CHKDSK deleting Files after Improper Shutdown
I've been on a SATA drive for a while now...every time I crash and have to shut down by pressing the power button or reset, WinXP will ask me to CHKDSK...it runs...finds corupted files (9 out of 10 times it shuts down improperly) and deletes...I'm at a point where i'm afraid to use this thing...It has deleted a JPG i was working on...lucky for me it wasnt the PSD.
Should this be happening?
My Rig:
AMD 64 3200+
MSI K8T Neo2
Apacer 512 DDR 400 PC 3200
ATI Radeon 9800 128mb
SB Live 5.1
LG DVD RAM
LG CD RW
Maxtor 120 SATA
TT 420W PSU
Also wondering...which controller is better? the VIA or the PROMISE?
Is there a update for the SATA drivers that came with the MOBO? (replace the old drivers on floppy and put the new one in??)Hi
Right click on My Computer - manage - disk management, it will say if disk is healthy, there are various tools there to check disk, I would re partition and format. First check the cables are fully in place.
I use the Via controller, its better.
If you haven't ghosted before, it is not a good time to start. Don't think it will do any harm, but if you are not sure what you are doing, you may not get data back.
I think norton AV on its own might be OK, but Norton System works, does not like this setup.
Once you have formatted, run the check disk utility in disk management, with fix errors ticked.
good luck

When I delete an E-mail the next one does not automatically pop up any more
When deleted,next E-mail always opened.Now it just goes back to E-mail page.Went into yahoo mail site and it still has "open next E-mail" checked as the option of choice.Firefox 25 just downloaded automatically a few days ago and that is when I started having the problem.
Try some basic steps if you have issues with web pages:
Reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.
*Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
*Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
*Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)
Clear the cache and cookies only from websites that cause problems.
"Clear the Cache":
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

plz someeone help my iphone stuck then turn off and won`t turn on any more or connect to computer or charge any more????and today i found it working for 1 hour and turn off again plz help
Who repaired the phone? I suggest taking it back to this repair facility. Since Apple replaces phones instead of repair, the repair facility would be the one to take care of your problem.
