On boot, mac pro loud fan then quits?

I just moved houses and, after hooking my 2006 Mac Pro back up, when I start it up, the screen looks normal (apple, revolving black spiked wheel), but it also has a grey bar across the bottom that slowly begins to fill with black, as if it is loading something. Then, the fan (I guess it's the fan) begins to get louder and louder and after about a minute of extremely loud noise, the system shuts itself down. I've tried everything including changing plugs, unpluging all periferals from the system, etc. No Go!
Help me please.
Thanks,
Arnie

That thermometer bar appears at Startup when your Hard Drive is too damaged to mount. It is tracking the progress of a Disk Utility (Repair Disk). If at the end of the repair process, the drive is still too damaged to mount, your Mac will shut down.
All of this is by design. Your Hard Drive has very serious problems.
To get working quickly, Boot from your backup clone if you have one, else buy a new drive and install Mac OS X on it, then use your Time Machine backup to restore your files at System Initialization. This will allow you to use the full resources of Mac OS X to attempt to rescue files and/or the drive.
If you cannot do that, let readers know how they can help.

  • Mac Pro loud fan noise after 2-3 hours

Hi. I bought a Mac Pro quad 2,66 with 5 Gb ram for about a year ago. Everything works well, but after 2-3 hours the Exhaust and CPU fan starts to raise and when checking iStat it stays at about 3000 rmp for Exhaust and CPU. The noise is bad...This happens even if the Mac is not in use (any programs running) The temperature inside the Mac is low - about 30 degrees (Celcius) and the fans do not slow down until i restart the Mac. I have tried the Reset of the SMC. There is no difference after resetting the SMC....
    Any suggestions??

I have been dealing with a Mac Pro for the past 6 months in my sound studio having a constant vacuum from the fan. I assumed this was normal and a purchasing oversight I made. It was far from silent, infact it was so loud it sounded (on recordings) like a car was constantly in the room idling. Very annoying.
I took apart the mac pro thinking there would be maybe dust (as people suggested) in my video card - as that appeared to be where the sound was coming from. I removed the card, and there wasn't really a build up of dust.
I did however put the card back into a slot (it was on the bottom slot closest to the ram - maybe it couldn't breath?) and turned it back on and for the first time since October 08 I have the computer I paid for and not an oversized noise box.
So there is obviously something dodgy about this ATI card Apple. Its actually really quite annoying and dealing with a nuscense noise for 6 months on a computer you drop thousands and thousands for is just ********.

  • Mac Pro rattling/fan loud?

My Mac Pro makes a really loud rattling noise within when it's moved/turned  upside down etc - does anyone have any idea what it could be?
Also does anyone know how much it costs to get a Mac Pro wiped back to factory settings in an Apple Store?
    Cheers

You can wipe it back to factory settings yourself.  Also, you shouldn't move the Mac Pro when it is turned on. It is not meant to be a portable computer when it is turned on.
    Erase and Reinstall OS X
Note: This will delete all data on the disk. Back up important files before continuing.
Erasing and then reinstalling OS X can give you a fresh start, making your computer exactly as it was whenever you received it from Apple. This can solve various problems such as corrupt system files.
Shut down the computer by going to Apple () > Shut Down…
Select Shut Down or allow the computer to shut down automatically.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter into a power source and then connect it to your Mac if you have not already done so.
Press the Power Button to turn on the computer.
Press and hold both the R and Command (⌘) keys on the keyboard until the Recovery partition loads. If this does not work, shut down the computer, press the Power Button to turn on the computer, and then hold in the Alt (⌥) button immediately after you press the power button. Then, select the Recovery HD partition to boot up in the Recovery HD partition.
Select Disk Utility and then choose Continue.
Select your startup disk (Macintosh HD by default) from the left.
    Select the Erase tab.
Choose the Format pop-up menu and choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled), enter a name for your disk, and then click Erase.
After the disk is erased, choose Disk Utility > Quit Disk Utility.
Select Reinstall OS X and then choose Continue.
    Follow the instructions.
    I hope I helped.

  • Mac Pro computer crashes then heavy fan activity

My 2008 Mac pro has suddenly started to crash and then the fans come on very loudly.  I have been turning the computer off at this stage fearing possible trouble.  I have used Disk Warrior to write a new directory and thought after a day without a crash that all was well.  But it crashed again in the evening.  At the moment I am sending this message from the Mac Pro.  Tomorrow I will run the Apple hardware test to see if I have a failing piece of hardware but wondered if anyone has had the same problem.

Repairing your disk either with Disk Utility, or better yet as you have done with Disk Warrior is a great idea. The diagnostic is also helpful. Even if it does not find a problem, it gives you the feeling that things are basically OK.
Next thing to look at is whether all your memories are showing up at their proper sizes and with Status "OK", indicating single-bit errors are not occurring regularly:
Apple menu > About this Mac > ( More Info ) > Memory
Console.app can inspect the Substantial System logs looking for errors and crash reports. Sometimes those logs hold clues as to why things happened. Every entry is time-Stamped, so if you have another problem, write down the time it occurred, and you can chek in the log about that time to see if anything unusual was reported.

  • Mac pro 15 fan comes on and then mac is frozen with blank screen

While my mac pro 15 is plugged in and cover shut the fan comes on all of a sudden and is loud . I open the cover and the screen will not come on . I have to shut down with the power button then restart.  This has just started. Is my hard drive getting ready to crash?

    Ikosova,
have you tried resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller, to see if that causes its fan to be better behaved?

  • Mac Pro loud humming

Having owned/used an iMac White, iMac Silver, Macbook & MacBookPro. I have never heard a computer as loud as my MacPro.
I am running the default stock standard 320GB Apple/Samsung drive. And 2 other drives - which I suspected could cause the noise, so I removed them and rebooted. But the loud humming is still there.
Its uncomfortable, and in a small room I can't hear myself think. My mum listened and said it sounds similar to a fridge.
I have searched the web and the bottom links recommend shoving towel in the MacPro, or bending the drive bays. I just really don't feel comfortable doing that.
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=463342
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=413163&highlight=resonance

Unfortuneatly, noise is subjective so you'll never get a definitive answer as to whether the Mac Pro is noisy. People coming from noisy pcs will tell you the Mac Pro is whisper quiet. People using them in work environments won't notice any noise because of the general ambient noise. (It's amazing how much humming noise flourescent bulbs alone can make.) My Mac Pro is used in a quiet room so the noise is quite noticeable to me. Your description of "fridge" is spot on. Mine sounds like a mini fridge when the condensor kicks in. My only guess is that it's coil resonance from the power supply, because i've pretty much ruled out any visible "moving part". I've booted up with no hard drive connected, briefly stopped each fan individually (including the video card fan) and the humming persisted. Having given up at this point, i simply play music on iTunes in the background while the system is on. I'm fairly certain if i took it in for service, i would be told it is operating normally and be charged for having them look at it so thus far have not taken that route.

  • Mac Pro PSU fan not spinning...

    System: Mac Pro (early 2009)
After a while the system shuts itself down, and then repeatedly does so while trying to boot back up. After letting it sit a couple of hours, it boots back up, but again starts shutting itself down.
I opened it up and noticed the PSU fan was not spinning - which eventually caused the PSU to overheat and power off.
I ran a hardware test, and got the following error...
    4MOT/1/40000002: PS-0
I searched on the Internet for this error, and it seems (I assume) that this error means the PSU fan is bad, but I plugged it into another fan port on the motherboard and it worked fine. I then, plugged one of the other fans into the PSU Fan port and it did not work.
    I reset the SMC.
I reinstalled the OS (Snow Leopard)
I loaded "Fan Control" software (PSU Fan stays at 0 RPM and cannot be manually adjusted.)
At this point I'm guessing it's either the power supply itself (which I find hard to believe), or the PWM controller for the PSU Fan is not working. To get around the issue, I'm ordering a "simple" (2 wire for power only) fan to replace the built-in fan and a manual (knob) speed controller. (Total of $10, until the real issue can be determined.)
If anyone could help any further, I'd appreciate it.

Most of the fans in the cabinet are under control of the SMC software. They do indeed run full speed with no software intervention, as a fail-safe mechanism. (Software crashes, fans roar at top speed.)
A program like "SMC fan control" can provide visibility to the temperatures, and SOME control of the base fan speeds. My recollection is that the PSU fans 'do their own thing' (unlike the main cabinet fans) and are not software controllable. Components inside the power supply determine the temperatures and adjust its own fan speeds.
If that is the case, when used in combination with your analysis above, you should be able to trace back to an output amplifier (intended to modulate fan speed) that is DEAD and stuck at an output that is telling the fan not to spin. I would hope a 29 cent component was responsible.
A short in the backplane seems exceedingly unlikely. Most of what the power supply does is directly onto its discrete wiring harness. The main DC harness to the motherboard uses high-current connectors. Using more than one of those for signaling or fan speed seems more wasteful than power supply designers could tolerate.

  • Trouble dual-booting Mac Pro after moving - Boot Camp

Here's the story: My wife and I just moved a few miles away, and I transported my "late 2005" Mac Pro carefully on the front seat, on its side. Upon arrival, I am having great difficulty booting up.
Generally, I dual boot into either Snow Leopard or Windows XP. Here's what has been happening since the move:
I boot holding down the Option key. At this point, I have mouse movement, but no activity on the screen for about 5 minutes. When my hard drive options finally appear on the screen, (mouse movement is still normal at this point), or I can Left/Right Arrow between the two operating systems... no problem. However, as soon as I either click on the desired icon, or hit the Enter key, the mouse freezes on the screen and stays that way for perhaps 10 minutes or so before Mac OS starts up. Then operation seems normal.
But when I try booting into Windows XP, it spontaneously reboots into the Boot Camp screen... again very, very slowwwwly.
Has this ever happened to you? Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot/resolve this problem?
Thanks in advance for your time and experience.
    Eddie

    Begin with this:
Mac Pro came out in Aug 2006, so the fact you run Windows, you have later than any Late 2005 (which referred to PowerMac and G5s)
Normally I would travel with the hard drives in boxes, removed.
XP and also Windows 32-bit any version only offers 1.9GB usable RAM.
Depends on where XP is, on the same drive as OS X? or on its own?
Try check the drive is seated tightly.
    Run chkdsk
    Boot XP CD
Clone Mac OS? so you have an image if needed.
    Same goes for XP.
And if you set XP as the default boot OS?

    Hello, LeaseBL.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Try resetting the System Management Control to see if the fan noise ceases.  Also, make sure there are no obstructions to the fan as well as the portable is on a flat surface when in use.

  • Early Mac Pro reboots fan kicks on

Mac Pro early 2008 reboots and fan kicks turns on high speed during reboot.  I have tried dusting, resetting SMC, power cords, different outlets, pulled out ramm and reinserted it, restored energy saving defaults, reset pramm, ran disk utility.  Any Advice?

    Hi,
Turned on computer this morning and after 15 minues it rebooted and fans came on.  I restarted the computer in safe mode and all seemed well.  I restarted the computer and it rebooted twice then the fans came on and are still on.  I will be able to use the computer all day with no problems as long as the fans are on high.  I followed the directions on kernel panic and am not for sure if what I pasted below is the information you requested. It was in the DiagnosticReports folder and had the same time as when the computer crashed. Thanks!

  • Booting Mac Pro in Windows from SAS drive - has anyone else done this?

I'm trying to boot both Windows (Vista 64bit) and Mac OS X.5 from an internal SAS drive (I don't need RAID). I've done some research and discovered that the following options won't work:
Apple RAID card: (bootable, supports SAS, but no support for Windows)
CalDigit RAID card: (bootable in Mac and Windows, but no SAS support)
HighPoint RAID/SAS card: (not bootable in Mac Pro)
At present I've installed an Atto 308H SAS controller, but can't get it to boot.
Has anyone else successfully used the Atto card (or anything else)? If so, how did you do it?
    Bryce.

Further to the above: I have now managed to install and boot Vista64 from the SAS drive.
For those interested, I booted into OS X (on a SATA drive) and installed the drivers for the Atto card, then flashed the card with the latest firmware (as at 13/9/08). After rebooting, I could see the SAS drive in either Mac or Windows - although I still couldn't boot from it, or install an OS to it.
I used the Atto "MakeDisk" utility to create a Windows driver folder on a USB Flash drive.
Then I attempted to install Vista (loading drivers from USB as approprate), but it wouldn't install to the SAS drive becuase it was a "GPT Style partition".
I rebooted into WinXP and used DiskPart (from the command prompt) to change the SAS drive from a GPT to an MBR disk.
After this I could install Vista sucessfully (still had to load drivers from the USB).
I've now created a second MBR partition on the SAS drive, and tomorrow I'm going to install the BootCamp drivers in Windows and then see if I can install OS X.5 on that partion.
I'm pretty happy, as even if I have to run OS X from a SATA drive, I've got what I wanted - a quiet, good-looking and realatively cheap high-end dual-boot PhotoShop machine (I use PhotoShop on Windows).

  • Mac Pro Server fans rev when wake from sleep

I have a former Mac Pro 2010 (5,1) server that I am using as a desktop. Ever since I got it, if allowed to sleep, when woken the fans go to full blast and stay there until the machine is restarted. I have reset the power manager and PRAM with no change. I have just lived with it never sleeping. now I have a 2013 6 core on the way and this machine will hit the eBay listings soon so I wondered if anyone had any ides about this. I hate to tell a prospective buyer s/he can't sleep the machine. The firmware is also up to date.
    Thanks in advance,
    Ted

I don't rermember exact numbers but the temps were low normal, this first happend in my air conditioned office, which I lke cold. I don't think it's a sensor problem because when it's working hard the temps rise to consideable levels and I usually up the fan speed myself before the fan speed increases on it's own. Also it will happen if I sleep it for 5 seconds and wake it. I originally thought that a server might have different firmware and being unattended this might be a failsafe if one were to accidently be put to sleep but the firmware seems the same as a desktop machine. Has happene over three boot drives and two operating systems so it's not some software weirdness. The machine is immaculate inside, no dust anywhere. I'ts got me beat. I suppose I force the rise again and check the log oon Console, see if anything shows up.
    Ted
