  • HP Pavilion Slimline S5: Internal HDD Failure, PC Won't Boot

My HP Pavilion Slimline S5's internal HDD failed and died recently (bought in 2011). My HP warranty was long gone.
The startup screen showed this message:
1720-SMART Hard Drive  detects imminent failure
    Failing Drive: SATA0
    Failing Attributes: # 05
I have several questions regarding this issue:
Is it caused solely by HDD failure? I want to replace it myself, but I'm not really sure if there are any other parts to be replaced. Or will it be better to bring it to computer shop to have it checked thoroughly?
Can I replace it with Seagate Barracuda 3.5" (7200rpm, 1 TB, SATA 3 or 6)? I think current HDD is Hitachi.
Do I still need to transfer Windows OEM after the HDD is replaced?
    Thanks in advance.
    This question was solved.

While not entirely sure what that error code means but I think it just means that the OS is not installed and the booting sequence has failed.  In my posting about the cloning process, nowhere did we discuss being able to boot the PC to the new drive before attempting the clone, so that process is next or just use the Recovery set on the new drive.

  • I am trying to install a hp officejet 4215 all in one on a HP Pavilion slimline with Vista

I am trying to install a hp officejet 4215 all in one on a HP  Pavilion slimline with Vista, I log in under myself and  I am an administrator, When I run the cd to install it shows that I need to be logged in as administrator, any help out there ?

I am not sure why the HP software needs to recognize your airport. That's a function of the OS. Can you be more specific about the problem you are having? Do you have some screen shots? Is the Macbook connected to the router?
If the HP printer can't recognized the router, that's a different story. You'll need to plug the Macbook into the printer (by cable) to config it (that's typical). You may need to assigne the printer its own static IP address (which I would advise doing anyway). That way you can always find it and it will make setting up network printers on other computers a bit easier.

  • How do I operate multiple monitors on my HP Pavilion Slimline Pavilion s3600t?

    Hello HP Forum,
I am looking to operate 2 monitors on my HP Pavilion Slimline Pavilion s3600t that currently has GeForce 7100/NVIDIA nForce 630i.  I am not a computer technician and only semi-tech saavy (less than more).  I was told I needed a video card; however, I don't know what I need nor how to install it. Can anyone tell me what I type of video card I need to purchase (and why) and then point me to a video or instructions on install?
Further, what would it take for a computer to operate 3 monitors?  Would this computer capable of operating 3 monitors? And what would that entail/how does it compare to installing options for 2 monitors?
    Thanks for your help guys!
    Cheers

  • CD/DVD drive is no longer working on my HP Pavilion Slimline s3720y desktop

Hi!  I am having problems with my HP desktop computer and wonder if  someone can help me solve this issue.
My CD/DVD drive is no longer working on my HP Pavilion Slimline s3720y desktop. When I tried to test my CD/DVD drive  to ensure it it was working properly , When I clicked to open Hardware Diagnostic Tools and it said "The software program is not found".  The CD/DVD drive was working but will not respond or recognize that a disk is in the drive.  It states insert disk in drive.  Where are my diagnostic tools that are missing?

    Hi,
Your Seagate update CD is to update the firmware for Seagate hard drives.
Did you try the tips in the post that I referenced above?
Error 31 indicates that the driver is not installing correctly.
Go to Device Manager, locate the CD/DVD drive, open up the CD/DVD drive, double click, click on the Driver tab, then uninstall the driver. Now reboot your PC and Windows will re-install the driver.

  • HP Pavilion Slimline Windows 7 64-bit: "No speakers or headphones are plugged in" error message

I have an HP pavilion slimline, model s5120y, with Windows 7 (64-bit).
I just got my power supply replaced and when I brought it home and plugged everything in, I couldn't get any sound. It told me no audio devices were plugged in, but my monitor with speakers was plugged into the audio jack in the back, the green one (it's an onboard sound card and NOT HDMI). I also tried my headphones and same thing, so I know it's not the monitor.
So then I tried the jack in the front and it worked, although the sound was really low, even with the volume turned all the way up. But, then like an hour later it went off again giving me the same message that no devices are plugged in. I tried the back jack again and then it worked again for a short amount of time. It keeps going in and out and switching to whether the back or front jacks will work, or nothing at all telling me nothing is plugged in.
Another thing is that my web cam has a mic, which is plugged in using USB, and the mic on the cam seems to record fine, and I assume it needs the sound card to do that. So, i'm guessing this is some sort of software problem because if the sound card was **bleep**ed up then the mic wouldn't be able to record, right? Well, the program I was using was showing that it was recording and the levels went up as I talked louder, so I assume it was picking everything up properly.
The audio worked fine before I brought it in for repair but I can't figure out what could have happened to break it when all he did was plug in a new power supply.
I went to the device manager and it says everything is working properly and all drivers are up to date. I also uninstalled then re-installed, disabled then re-enabled. I even went to the manufacturer's page and installed the original driver for RealTek. I also went into BIOS to make sure onboard audio was enabled. Every troubleshooting option I have on my computer says everything is working fine, but that there are no speakers plugged in even when they are.
Also I should mention, when the sound does come back on, it's pretty low and sometimes muffled, and sometimes the monitor speakers will make a dim clicking kind of sound, but not all the time. One person told me it was a known issue with the latest windows update, but I haven't done an update since I got the computer back and I couldn't find any info on that anywhere on the internet.
Thanks to anyone who has any suggestions!

Hi Srizzle, I have done some research for you and I have found a updated driver that is designed to resolve the issue of No sound from head phones or from external speakers. Please click on the link to get to the driver down load page.

  • Will Not Boot Up: Pavilion Slimline PC 400-314 desktop

Have a new Pavilion Slimline PC 400-314 desktop.  Power green lite is on at back of computer but will not boot up when "On" button is pushed and held.  Can you help?

    Hello @Bill1303,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I understand that the green light on your power supply is lite up on your HP Pavilion Slimline PC 400-314 Desktop PC, yet it will not power on when you push the power button. If you can hear things going on when you push the button then I would like you to follow the steps set out in the HP Support document: Screen is Blank after Starting the Computer.
If on the other hand nothing happens when you push the power button then the issue you are describing appears to be a physical issue. Please call our technical support at 800-474-6836. • HP Pavilion Slimline s3707c PC will not boot up all the way

HP Pavilion Slimline s3707c PC will not boot up all the way; gives the following message:
    Entering Setup
    <F10=setup>                          <F11=System Recovery
    <Esc=Boot Menu>                 <F9=Diagnostics>
Tried to install recovery disc; did not respond.
    [Personal Information Removed]

    Hi wjackson95,
When you get to the screen mentioned below, can you press the F11 key to enter the Recovery system that is on the hard drive? Alternatively, if you can press F10, you can go into the BIOS and change your boot order to put your disc drive before the hard drive so that the PC boots to your Recovery discs. NOTE: You may have to press F10 or F11 multiple times to get it at the right time.
You might consider opening your PC to see if it has dust buildup. If your PC has overheated, it can cause it to not boot. It can also cause heat damage to the interal parts.

  • Pavilion Slimline s7700e Display brightens but is blank when waking from sleep.

When the computer wakes from sleep it seems to come up normally but the screen doesn't work. It brightens and there is a line across the top of the screen but it doesn't show anything. If I shut the computer down by holding the power button in and start it up again everything comes up normally.
I have recently assumed care of this computer. In investigating this problem I found that the computer had never been updated. Have since installed all Vista updates. Went to HP site and installed updates (including BIOS), changed power options and am still having the problem.
Do not know what else to do.
    Would appreciate any ideas.

  • No Sound on HP Pavilion Slimline s7520n PC

I have no sound on my HP Pavilion Slimline s7520n PC.  It uses Realtek AC97 Audio. This sound card is on the Motherboard.
I did all the troubleshooting steps and it says everything is working properly.  Nothing is muted.
I have tried updating the driver but it says I am using the most updated driver already. So that did not fix the sound.
I tried plugging in headphones to see if there was sound that way and there is not.
I noticed the sound was not working after a Microsoft Update but can't say for sure that it caused the problem or if it just happened  about that same time.
I tried asking Microsoft Support  for help and they sent me a link to download a driver.  It did not fix the sound and they  suggested I re-install WinXP  I have not done that yet because I really did not want to loose all my data if I don't have to.  If it is the sound card gone bad I would be doing that for nothing. I am in the process of saving all my music and photos to CDs just in case I have to reinstall XP.
Someone suggested just installing a new sound card and assuming the Slimline has a open slot in it
I would need instructions on installing a new sound card.
Anyone else had this problem or have other suggestions on fixing the sound?   Thanks for any help.

Go to the Control Panel --> Sounds and then right mouse click on Playback and make sure you don't have a disabled device. Do the same for Recordings.  Do the speakers under the Playback tab have a green check mark?
The other thing to check is to go into Device Manager and make sure that there are not any yellow exclamation points for yellow question marks.  A red X on the Sound device is also not good. Click on the Sound device and then right mouse click (properties) on each sound device and see if all are working.
Lastly, since you have the Sound driver downloaded, you could try uninstalling the sound driver and then reinstalled it.

  • Pavilion Slimline s3760a: Cloning the Hard drive to replace with larger drive

    Product Name:Pavilion Slimline s3760a
    OS: Vista
    Hi All,
I'm Turina, just joined the forum think I'm posting in the right place but let me know if I'm not please.
So we've had our computer for several years, the hard drive is in the red so am swapping it out before it dies of old age, for a WD 1TB Hard drive.
I am going to use a Sata-usb adapter and the Acronis True Image WD Edition Software to clone the installed hard drive.
It is only used at home, and we are purchasing another one for gaming, so this is just the usual photos, music, documents computer, some website/ftp type stuff, but nothing too consuming.
I don't think I have the original cd that came with the computer, so I don't have a cd of the OS.
Have already backed up the computer several times so should I return to factory setting prior to changing the hard drive?  No important stuff on there that I can't retrieve.
    Questions are:
The current drive is partitioned, the C: and the D: which is the Factory Image.  I want to know if I can clone the factory image separately to the C drive onto different drives.  ie the factory image onto one drive and the rest onto another drive.  I actually am not sure what a factory image is but after reading about it I asume it is the information used to restore your computer back to factory settings??
If I can't clone separately, when I clone the drive will the computer then be able to recognise the extra 1TB or will it still just recognise the current drives memory of 320GB.  I know you can enlarge partitions etc. no idea how or even if I need to do this??
And would a separate SSD or even hard drive for the OS be over kill?  I don't actually think I can put the os on a separate drive as I don't have the cd, and don't know if I can do it with the cloning software.  But thought I would ask anyway.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks for your time
    Turina
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Your correct, the D is a protected image used to create a factory Recovery. It's less than 15GB.
A prepped/formatted 1TB drive creates about 931GB of useable space.
The clone process will create about 916GB for C. The remaining will be the D.
    Hope that helps.
