On disc editing?

Hi, newbie here. Sorry if this is obvious, just trying to learn & can't find this in the help docs so thought I'd ask here:
I used to do on disc editing with another program and though I knew it was risky, I liked it because I record music performances from bands that play on TV (Leno, Leterman, etc.) and collect all of their performances on discs (each disc per band) and within the disc in date broadcast order and once a +RW disc was full, I'd then copy it to a +R disc and start a new +RW disc for that band (only for my own personal collection though of course).
Well, I can't use that program on my new Vista tower and I know on disc editing has been frowned upon so I guess I can't do that anymore (since most don't recommend it and companies also feel the same way as I bet it's not easy to find programs that will do that anymore) but I really need as similar a set up as I can get since I have so many of these discs there's no way I can just keep the contents of them on my external hard drive "in case" I need to reburn them and I just don't have the time to re-rip 2 hours of twenty 10 minute videos back to my computer so I can reset the chapter points (between songs on each show) & reauthor the discs all over again over and over just because so & so was on Letterman last night (that's where the on disc came in, because then I could just go in and squeeze it on the "pending" +RW disc and edit the already existing authoring and then the new vid wouldn't be clogging up my drive space) & friends of mine can send me older perfs which I need to put in the middle of an older disc so yes, in those cases I would have to reauthor from scratch I guess but the newer stuff...
I could double boot XP on my PC I suppose but I just wanted to check to see if this was possible with APE7 is all before I do all of that.
So let me know how to do this if I can with APE7, if not, any suggestions? Thanks in advance for the replies. :)

No. You can't edit on disc, if by that you mean adding or removing some video files while leaving other files on a DVD, with Premiere Elements. In fact, depending on what format you're recording these TV shows to (DVD? DVR?) this may not be the ideal program for you at all, even if you store the files on a hard drive and then burn them to DVD once they're assembled.
A better program for that might be Sonic MyDVD.
A better program for working with DVR files is Ulead's Movie Studio.

I can get a disc to burn but it will only play my mac. No SD DVD player or computer will recognize it. I must be missing something very simple. HEEELLLLP

Out of frustration I burned the movie in iDVD. It will work for now. So it's not media DVR-R. DVDSP has a setting or preference wrong or there is some corruption in the software that needs to be adressed.
DVDSP make much better looking and sounding DVDs than iDVD. I stilll need to solve the problem for future DVDs.
As of now DVDSP is set SD 16:9 in the preferences and SD NTSC the disc window.

Adobe Premiere Elements 11 running very slowly

I have been working on my first project on Premier Elements 11. After rendering, I now see an alert when the project first opens "Premiere Elements is running very low on system memory. Save the project and proceed with caution. The project also becomes non responsive and I have to shut it down. Any fixes or ideas?

What computer operating system are you running your Premiere Elements 11 on?
What are the properties of your source media that you have on that Expert workspace Timeline, especially when you are getting those low memory messages? You can get that information from a MediaInfo properties readout or we could try to figure that out from the brand/model of your camera and its settings.

What is the description of your computer from the point of view of installed/available RAM and free hard drive space. Have you set up the Scratch Discs (Edit Menu/Preferences/Scratch Disks)? Install Windows 8.1 on rMBP

Hi All,
Probably a simple question, however I seem to be struggling with this!
I'm trying to install Windows 8.1 on my Retina Macbook Pro, however I'm unsure if i need to buy Windows 7 first? Or can I just get a Windows 8.1 student disk or what? Im currently a student at university, so am valid to buy a student edition (I assume). I have a portable cd drive, and am looking to get a disc edition and not the downloadable one. Any help would be brilliant!
Would also be installing it via Bootcamp if possible?
The system i'm running is the Macbook Pro Retina, early 2013 3Ghz i7, with 8GB RAM. I assume it will run windows 8.1 fine.

IDVD 5 will not burn - Query

I have a LaCie DVD burner which I successfully use with iDVD and have had no problems. Today I have added a 250GB LaCie 250GB hard disk for extra video editing space. I have edited and successfully saved a trial project on to the new disc.
When I fired up iDVD and tried to burn a dvd from this project the burner asked me to insert a disc; then the iDVD 'insert your dvd' request just sat here with the burn button spinning around on the iDVD page. I can get no further in spite of it recognising the presence of a disc some of the time when I place one in the burner (once or twice - not). I have also tried a second project of different material with the same results.
Have I confused iDVD by moving my video footage? Do I need to adjust any of my iDVD settings?

It looks as though your suggestion has helped. As my Mac disc was very full OSX couldn't work properly, so I moved a lot of software on to my external disc, this has given me the room I need.
How I work it now is as follows, I load the dvd project onto my external disc, edit it in iMovie there, then move it on to the 'home' computer disc for final editing and burning.
My problem was, therefore, not with iDVD at all, I had not left myself enough room to run OSX not iDVD. My burner and my external disc function correctly now.

3G iPhone + Dark Knight Digital Copy

I bought the Dark Knight two disc edition and extracted the Digital Copy into my iTunes Library. I've tried to sync it to my iPhone, but it doesn't seem to want to... I've added it to a playlist as well as checked the box for it in the Video tab. Does anybody know if Warner Bros excluded the iPhone from Digital Copy playback? Maybe I'm missing a step?

I have the original iPhone and was able to transfer my digital copy of the Dark Knight to my iTunes Library and then sync it to my iPhone. It did take up a lot of memory as the film is 2hours and 32 minutes long. I suggest you try playing (a bit)it in iTunes first then trying to sync it again, as suggested.

Bitrate budgeting and motion menus

I'm building a project that has about 8 motion menus that use the same 30 sec..avi in the BG. This project is over 3.5 hrs. now for a DL-9 so every minute matters. Will Encore essentially point to the same asset for the motion menu each time it's used and therefore figure 30 seconds for the motion menus total? Or will Encore use it 8 times and I need to figure 4 minutes total?

The quality can easily be checked by running an MPEG-2 export of a small section of the original to test it.
Write this to an RW disc, and play it - this is probably the best way to see what the final quality will look like in the real world without wasting the time it would take to encode 3 1/2 hours and then decide you want to do a 2 disc edition instead!
Re the "dummy" chapter points.
Yes - 2 very close together is what I had in mind, but with 32 chapters I reckon you will be okay anyway. Don't use Dummy chapter points unless you really have no choice - it will mean having to remember this when setting navigation links (I did one recently and thank all the Gods I did a DL-R burn to test, as I forgot to adjust the menus for the dummy CP! That would have been embarrassing at the factory!)
What I mean by "Hidden" is a chapter point added near the place where the LB has to go, not at the end. It would not be listed in the chapter menus, and would not be referred to in any navigation. It would exist solely to give Encore somewhere to place a layer break - and ONLY if you cannot get this set using the Automatic procedure.
There is another nasty Gotcha here as well.

Video noise in exported blu-ray

Hi - I don't know where to start with this one. I exported a project from PPro to Encore for menus, etc, and built a blu-ray ISO image. So far, so good. I burn a BD-R from that image using imgburn, then I took the disc upstairs to watch it on the big screen, and YUCK!
Before I go on, here's the details:

i have CS6 waiting, but I want to finish this project before installing CS6.
~2 hour film of a stage musical production, plus a bit of behind-the-scenes/backstage stuff
Footage from 2 x Sony Z1P cams (1440x1080 1.33 HDV), and 1 x Canon XF300 (1920x1080 1.0 - I think it uses XDCAM)
Due to the nature of the stage lighting, i.e. lots of deep colours, this footage needed a great deal of colour correction and frequently needed big boosts to brightness. I mainly used the RGB colour corrector, as it was easy to boost or reduce the red, blue and/or green gain to get a reasonable result. I was mostly trying to return skin tones to something resembling human, and leave the rest of the colours alone. Sometimes I needed to use "Change to colour" because the lighting crew used a different colour backdrop from one night to the next
I used brightness and contrast adjustments to start, and played around with gamma and overall gain to fine tune the brightness. Also had the reference monitor on display - mostly RGB but also YC waveform.
Anyway, playback in PPro looked OK, I thought it was as good as it was going to get, so I added chapter markers, exported to Encore, built the menus, FINALLY got a clean bill of health from "Check project", built a blu-ray ISO image on the hard drive, then burnt a BD-R for testing.
Took it upstairs to the lounge room (where the blu-ray player, big screen and audio systems live), loaded and started to play. The menus look and work OK (buttons, scene selections, etc). Here's the strange parts:
1. the footage from the Canon and ONLY the Canon, appears to have had a lot of noise ADDED (video noise, not audio). This was the first time I used this camera, and I noted that when light levels got really low, the auto gain control kicked in, but it also got very noisy, so I had to decide to limit the AGC, take underexposed footage and "fix it in post". Now it looks OK on my monitor (ASUS 24" 1920x1080), only a little bit of noise that I can put up with but when played back on the blu-ray player and big screen, it looks ridiculous.
2. some footage from one of the Sony cams is way over-bright - that's something that I can easily correct.
I matched brightnes and colour from the 3 cameras as best I could, and it looks OK in PPro on the program monitor, but looks awful when exported and played via the blu-ray player to the big screen. I put the same disc in the blu-ray drive on my computer and watched the film on my monitor, and it looks OK. I mounted the ISO as a disc, and watched that with VLC, and it looks OK.
I took one section of "noisy" video, approx 60 seconds, and exported it 3 times, playing around with bit rates and noise reduction settings. The uncorrected export was very noisy, and each of the 2 "corrected" versions are improvements, but all of them are very noisy compared to the same footage previewed in PPro.
The export setting "use previews" was unchecked, so presumably it re-rendered everything for the build.
Where should I look to identify the place where the video noise is being added or exacerbated? It's ONLY on the Canon footage, so could it be a codec issue? I started to play with the footage in After Effects, but I haven't had a lot of experience with AE yet.

EHD firewire vs usb - which is better?

Hello Apple Fans,
I need to get an ehd for storing and editing iMovie projects and was wondering if a USB 2.0 drive with 480 Mbps is going to be fast and reliable enough for the job?

I hate to have a difference of opinion with Kirk ..who knows everything about QuickTime!
But although USB 2.0 is fast, it doesn't have the sustained file transfer speed of FireWire. It carries data in bursts, rather than as a continuous stream. So although you can transfer files OK with it, it's NOT really fast enough for editing movies which are stored on that external hard disc.
And if the hard disc is connected to a Mac via USB, then although there may be a FireWire socket on the hard disc too (..supposedly for connecting your camera to..) you won't be able to send video from the camera to the hard disc and use it within iMovie, because there is no connection between the FireWire circuitry and the USB circuitry: so, as Karsten explains below, your Mac won't know that a camcorder is connected to the external disc!
You say "..I need to get an ehd for storing and editing iMovie projects.." ..you'll be able to store your projects on a USB-connected external disc, but you won't be able to edit successfully using a USB-connected external disc.
You could import to your internal disc, edit there, then transfer the finished movie to the USB disc, but USB is too slow for editing with.

Video noise in dark images

I have recently started seeing "snow" in dark images on my 15" MBP/Retina. It started with a particular image type from a digital camera, but now it is doing with almost all dark images.

Help? How to dispose frame from JList Command

To every one out there,
i design an application with a menu using Jlist, when i selected a element from the list, it bring me to the next frame,however this frame with the JList that i want to dispose is still there.

Satellite L300 - Upgrade from Vista Home Basic to Home Premium issues

Hi all,
I just recently got a Satellite L300 with an OEM version of Vista Home Basic.
I have a copy of Windows Vista: Home Premium (upgrade) disc and decided to use it on the laptop.
I put the disc in, and followed the steps however the upgrade option is blanked out... This is if I use the product key provided with the disc or not.
The laptop came with Service Pack 1 already installed and the disc I own was released into the shops before Service Pack 1.
My main question really is how can I get my disc to upgrade my version of Vista. I have tried searching Google, this website, Microsoft's website and I keep getting the same answer.
Basically go through options and do anytime upgrade. All of these are for me to buy from Microsoft which would be kind of pointless as I already have a copy.
I did read something at on a site that stated my disc would have to have the service pack on the disk and I seen a website with some kind of disc editing program for Vista but im not too keen on using it and the 'how to' wasn't very easy to understand.
Also, im not too keen on calling either Toshiba or Microsoft on premium rate numbers for help with something I have already bought and paid for and should be as simple as a few steps.
Anyway hope someone can help because I would really like to upgrade.

I understand you and it is really annoying but what to do now? the fact is that Toshiba has offered this notebook with certain Vista version. This version must be offered with best and latest available Microsoft security updates. Due to this Toshiba offers it with latest SP1 option.
So now you try to install update offered long time ago and probably offered before SP1 was on the market. I understand your point of view but, in my opinion, it has nothing to do with Toshiba now, and you should try to find solution with Microsoft. For example you can also pick up info from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930733
Clean Vista Home Premium can be installed without any problems. All drivers, tools and utilities can be downloaded from Toshiba support & download page.

Info, hints & impressions of iMovie '08..

In case it may be of help; here are some recent experiences with iMovie '08..
- This promises to be rather long, so I'll try to add 'bullet points' to significant items.
I took a trailer for Blade Runner as my starting point (..I think three different ones were originally issued..) and re-edited it to "tighten it up" and improve(?) the colour, etc. (It was old and faded, and much of it was almost entirely blue.)
(I'd shot it a few years ago from the (my) cinema screen, with the camera (Sony TRV 900E) on a tripod, peering thro' the projection porthole from the projection room, with the projector's pre-amplifier output connected to the camera's audio input ("external mic" socket) to get the sound straight off the film, instead of through the cinema speakers. To avoid pale-and-dark patchy video - or a blank video - I'd set the camera's shutter speed to 12 frames-per-sec so that frames of the film (running at 24 fps) would 'blend' into each other, otherwise the camera's shutter speed, mismatching the film's frame rate, might give a kind of pulsating pale and dark effect if the camera's shutter were open while the projector's shutter was closed.)
I'd shot the movie onto miniDV video in 4:3 format, even though the trailer was 'widescreen', because the TRV 900's own 'widescreen' format just chops off the top and bottom of the picture, thus giving a poorer quality when that reduced height becomes the full video frame height. But that left unwanted rubbish at the bottom of the frame, and blank space at the top ..seen here in a still from the original video:
When I imported that 'squarish' 4:3 video into iMovie '08, I specified a new 16:9 Widescreen Project for it, and when I dragged the 4:3 shaped clip from the Event window into the upper Project window iMovie '08 automatically cropped the video clip to the required 16:9 shape, thus getting rid of the unwanted rubbish at top and bottom! ..But that still reduced the quality of the video, by making the 'cropped' height, with fewer actual pixels, into the new full height of the video frame. So the result was just the same as if I'd originally used pseudo-widescreen in the camera:
★ The effect in iMovie '08 is far better than the simple "letterboxing" of previous versions: instead of having to create a mask, or having black bands at the top and bottom of the frame, the cropped video now properly fills a 16:9 frame - although, in this particular case, because it was shot as 4:3, it expands and fills the frame at a slightly reduced quality.
I imported that single 4:3 shape standard-def miniDV clip into iMovie '08, and found it easy to split the clip where I wanted to, by dragging in the ends of the clip-selector (as described in iMovie's Help files) and then choosing 'Edit' and 'Split Clip'.
★ Here's iMovie's own Help description for "split clip":
To split a clip:
➀ - In your iMovie project, drag to select the frame range from the point where you want to split it to the end of the clip.
If you select a frame range beginning and ending in the middle of the clip, the clip will split into three parts.
➁ - Choose Edit > Split Clip.
Doing that, I separated and isolated a section in the middle of the main clip, so that I could just jab the 'Backspace/Delete' key to remove that chosen section. I did that several times to remove further bits I didn't want. This is more long-winded than the simple technique in all previous iMovie versions, which is to position the Playhead's vertical line where you want to split a clip, and then just press ⌘ & T to SpliT the clip. But then, this version's easy "skimming" or "scrubbing" often makes it faster to find the position(s) where a clip should be split ..a bit of swings and roundabouts there, I suppose. There is, of course, no "Bookmarks" facility in this version of iMovie: in some previous versions marks could be left at various points in the movie, to make it easier to jump back and forth between intended edit points or other points of interest while editing.
To smooth the changes between clips I added a short Dissolve transition (dragged it to the space between clips) to some of the edits.
★ To smooth the first edit I extracted audio from part of the original clip (by dragging from the original Event clip while holding down Shift and Command (the Apple key ⌘), as described at the end of this section of Apple's helpful Tutorials).
★ I then "Ducked" the audio of the added music beneath the original dialogue in the video clip, by choosing the video clip, and then using iMovie '08's audio tool.
Getting this movie into my online video Gallery was much more awkward: the version which iMovie '08 produced when Shared to QuickTime was atrocious; full of encoding artifacts and splodges ..more like a version of QT from about 6 years ago!
So I used 'Compressor' (bundled with Final Cut Studio) to make a decent h.264 version without compression artifacts.
To publish to my Gallery page, I needed to bring that into iMovie '08 again, and then 'Share' to .Mac Gallery. However, Compressor had created a 4:3 movie, in the same format as the original video material. In QuickTime I changed the displayed shape to 1024x576 (16:9), and Saved the movie, and it then played in QuickTime in the correct shape. But importing that into iMovie '08 - just like in iMovie HD 6 - still showed it as a 4:3 movie (the original format), even though the display shape had been saved as 16:9.
To correct that misreading of the proper format, I imported that 'Compressor+QuickTime' movie into MPEG Streamclip, and re-saved it there in 1024x576 format. I imported that re-saved version into iMovie '08, and it was the correct shape!
I could then export it - correctly shaped - to my Gallery page ..see last couple of lines, below.
One of the advantages of editing on my G5 (..I don't yet have an Intel Mac ..maybe there'll be newer Mac Minis to accompany Leopard's release in a few days' time?..) is that it has several hard drives in it. (It's a G5 quad, which came with one hard drive, and I added another single internal drive, plus two more formatted together as a very fast 'raid' (Redundant Array of Independent - or Inexpensive - Discs). This means that instead of all movie editing and final rendering being done on just the single system disc ..which is being constantly read and written to.. I can edit on the 'raid' disc, and export, or write onto, one of the other internal discs. This makes disc accessing, rendering, exporting, etc, faster and smoother, and material is written from one disc to another, instead of being read off and written back onto the same single disc - doubling the work which that single disc has to do.
★ For other Macs which don't have room for adding another internal disc, editing is generally smoother, and less strain on everything, if you add an external disc via (preferably) FireWire 800, or FireWire 400.
In Summary; iMovie '08 let me..
1 - Reformat 4:3 clips to 'widescreen' (16:9), and vice versa, without leaving black edges ..better results than HD 6.
2 - Split clips and delete unwanted sections fairly easily ..not as easily as HD 6, but without much difficulty.
3 - Extract, reposition and edit audio fairly easily ..with different , often simpler, tools than HD 6.
4 - Apply effects (transitions, colour adjustments) instantly, without waiting for rendering ..unlike the slower HD 6.
5 - Work with -s-t-a-b-i-l-i-t-y- and reliability (for me) ..unlike iMovie HD 6, 5, 4 and 3.
..but it doesn't let me..
(a) Add Bookmarks, to jump instantly through the movie to particular points.
(b) Add Chapters, although these can be done - more logically - in iDVD '08 ..though I haven't yet managed to do that.
(c) Create good-looking QuickTime versions of my movie ..I had to go to Compressor for that.
This edited trailer, which runs for 2mins 21 secs, is here ..See if you can spot the edits. (It may take a while to load, so have a cup of tea..)
If I have time and inclination I might upload - for comparison - the original trailer, which runs for a far longer - and less focused - 3mins 29 secs.

Ditto white screen problem.
I am using iMovie 08 for a 23 minute photo-music slideshow for more control over placement and my music.
The final scrolling credits are 60 seconds long over a photo that is 59 seconds long. I have a wipe right and a new photo and the credits/music end. Everything plays well in imovie, but on the DVD i burn with iDVD, there is a white screen where the credits should be.
Applecare suggested changing to another photo. I did. No change, another DVD coaster. Applecare suggested changing the jpg photo to tiff. I did, no change, another DVD coaster.
I exported again in Media Browser, different name, but got the same white screen.
The 5 other titles in the project are fine in iDVD. When I play it on my TV, it looks fantastic, except for that last white screen and no credits.
Any suggestions?

Iron Man 2 digital copy

So I just got the 3 disc edition of Iron Man 2 with the digital copy and put it on my computer. What I want to know is if I delete it from my computer if there will be a way to get it back using the disc. Would it say the code has been already used or does the digital copy tie to your account so you can put it back later? Thanks

I have an even stranger problem with my br/dvd/dc movie. My digital copy sheet doesn't even have a code printed.
