On Hold (Authentication Required)

Hi All,
I'm having an issue with my clients about printing, everytime they submit a print job to any printer installed on a Windows Server 2008 print server the job will be put on hold in the job queue.
On Hold (Authentication Required)
When you click on "Resume" on the toolbar it ask the user for their credentials. Problem is, this is not save on the client's keychain.
But when you change the name from "Doe,John" to it's login name "jdoe", it logs in just fine.
I guess my questions are:
     1. How or What do I do so when the window above popup, client user just need to check the "Remember this password in my keychain" and then click OK button and then credentials will be saved in the keychain.
     2. How or What do I need to change that when the window above popup, it'll say "jdoe" instead of "Doe,John".
     3. Is there a command that I can type on the Mac OS Server Terminal or a setting I can change on the server that will save this problem of mine.
We have 230 Mac Clients and their's 30 more coming, there must be a way to do it on the terminal or on the server so it affects all the Mac clients that's in the domain.
Additional Info:
User is authenticated thru Active Directory, Users are being managed thru Open Directory.
Active Directory is Windows 2008 64bit, Mac OS X Server 10.6.8
     Print Server is Windows 2008
Your Help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Not a problem at all
Alright, after trying both commands I still get this lovely bit in my console for cups.
I [25/Mar/2008:11:24:00 -0700] [Job 57] Authenticated by "".
Each command generated a line:
I [25/Mar/2008:11:23:12 -0700] New printer "printer" added by "jimmyeatapple".
I [25/Mar/2008:11:26:15 -0700] Printer "printer" modified by "jimmyeatapple".
The printer "printer" it is referencing here, is that in my print list (because I don't see it)? Is it the default schematic for a new printer? Should I add a new printer after having run these commands?

  • I am getting a printer message "on hold, Authentication required" when directly connected (USB) to any printer I try to install to my MacBook Pro.  Any ideas?

I am having trouble with printing from my MacBook Pro.  After succesfully installing a printer, sending a print job results in a alert in the print que that says "on hold  Authentication Required"
I am fairly new to Mac and have not the slightest clue what I am doing wrong.  Please help!
    Thanks, Slojon

After upgrading to OSX Mountain Lion on one of our home computers and having no difficulty with printer access for months, after a glitch involving loss of power, suddenly "On hold (authentication required)" started showing up.
When I deleted the printer and then tried to add it back using the default listing for the printer I got the message "Unable to download the software from the server at this time."  I felt I was going backwards.  The whole situation was maddening for a couple of days.
    Details:
Older G5 Desktop Mac running OSX Snow Leopard wth an HP Color LaserJet 2550 attached via USB.
Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro running OSX Mountain Lion.
    Airport WiFi network.
This is really two problems: how to add a printer successfully and how to print without authentication.
    How to add a printer
Do not use the default listing for adding the printer that shows up in the popup menu, instead use the generic "Add printer" command, then select the printer and printer type from the secondary menu that comes up.  This worked fine for me.
How to avoid the "Authentication required"
    Software update on both machines.
Reset printing system (Option & minus "-" key) on both systems.
Add the printer back to the server (older G5 Mac in my case) system.
Ensure that both the printer sharing is selected for the printer and …
… that printer sharing is turned on globally in the Sharing System Preferences
Add the printer back to the client system
I was also able to work this through the CUPS system described in other posts (http://localhost:631) but I always prefer to let Mac OSX handle the UNIX details since I have greater confidence I won't be inadvertantly messing something up.

  • Print status "On Hold (Authentication Required)"?

After upgrading to 10.5.2, I am now unable to print to the networked laser printers in the Windows network at work. I can see the printers on the domain, but when I try to print nothing happens. When I look at the print status it says "On Hold (Authentication Required)". Printing worked just fine on Tuesday before the software update. I provide my network password but nothing changes. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

Is there any way to get access to the beta release? Apple pushing out an update that breaks my ability to print anything on a windows network is a MAJOR roadblock. Deleting the printer queue didn't work. I spent two hours of my free time at the local Genius bar and we did get the CUPS workaround (setup the printer using CUPS) working, although it's a crappy solution since it can expose my domain password to someone who visits the right dialog. (Within this thread, I post what I and the fellow at the Genius Bar--yay Bell Square!--did to get this to work: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7097469#7097469)
Please tell me that Apple will be adding a test case for this into their regression test suite. I'd hate to see this problem crop up in the future. I like using Apple products but I'm worried because I'm seeing a lot of quality issues in the software: Mail doesn't populate the ICalendar automatically with calendar events despite checking that setting, right clicking on an ICalender item in an email doesn't always give you the option to view in ICalendar, editing ICalendar events doesn't always work (edit option missing) until you close and restart ICalendar, problems with IChat which I won't get into right now.
My sense is that these are bugs in features that probably worked at one time during the software life cycle but degraded (regressed). This is definitely the case for printing since it did work in 10.5.1. This leads me to believe that Apple doesn't have a good handle on quality, and also points to that Apple may not be using good agile development practices which would allow them to do quick deliveries (such as test automation).
I as a consumer then suffer. If Apple would like help implementing better software practices such as test driven development, automated unit testing, automated system testing, then please contact me.
I'd love to help a company I admire. You have great vision. Your products are OK, though could great if the quality was better. I hope Apple is using great software practices behind that, but from what I see, it doesn't. Sometimes, when I'm pull into the Apple franchise to enjoy a hamburger, I end up getting one that was made from squirrel meat because of problems in the kitchen.

  • Can't print on shared printer, Alert says "On Hold (authentication required)"

Mac Mini running 10.6.8 can't print using Mac Air running 10.8.5 with HP Laserjet 1022 USB connected.  Both computers on same airport network.  Both with latest updates and shared printer enabled.  Same problem in other direction (Air to mini if printer connected to mini).
This worked fine a few days ago.  Whats changed?  Anybody?

This might help... I recently upgraded to OS X 10.9.1 and had the same frustrations with "paused for authentication problems.  Luckly I just discovered that with the print sharing on in the computer that that has the direct connection with the printer being shared on the network and in this below screenshot, with certain persons selected, even an administrator, it puts a "no access" on the everyone option.  In this status I get the "paused for authentication" on the print jobs being submitted from any networked computer.  see below
I am taking it that the authentication the neworked computers are looking for is from the computer that is diretly connected to the printer and is sharing that printer to other users.
I've learned when you click the up and down arrow to the right of everyone you get either "no access" or "can print" option.
When the "can print" option is selected all the individual persons added gets droped, but at least now I can do a network print jobs from the other network connected computers and not get the "paused for authenication" problem.  Hope this helps anyone with "paused for authent" problems ET

  • Shared Printer On Hold: Authentication Required

There have been many discussions on the Apple Support Communities about this, most of which talk about how to reset the keychain password for a printer shared from a Windows PC. Many have, in fact, been archived. It looks as if this problem has been around for a LOONG time...
This is not my problem. I could print over my all-Mac network to my HP LaserJet 1200 printer via a HP JetDirect Printer Server fine. Until I upgraded to a MacPro running OS  X 10.8. And then, suddenly I couldn't. No AppleTalk available and no success accessing the IP settings for the JetDirect print server.
I finally achieved a work-around (of sorts). If I set up the printer as a shared printer on the G5 tower I still have on the network I coud print form the MacPro. It was very slow. But it worked. Until a couple of weeks ago. All of a sudden the printer queue needs 'Authentication'.
    The error log told me:
    E [18/Jul/2013:07:54:32 +1200] Unknown directive BrowseOrder on line 22 of /private/etc/cups/cupsd.conf.
    E [18/Jul/2013:07:54:32 +1200] Unknown directive BrowseAllow on line 23 of /private/etc/cups/cupsd.conf.
I've looked over these forums. I've tried various things. I've been through Keychain Access. I've stopped and reset print queue. And, guided my this forum, the last great masterstroke: "Reset Printing System" which wiped all printers on the MacPro completely. When I go to set up a new printer the MacPr can see the shared printers on the G5. But because it 'can't downoad software form internet' it can't set up a printer.
    Where to from here?

This might help... I recently upgraded to OS X 10.9.1 and had the same frustrations with "paused for authentication problems.  Luckly I just discovered that with the print sharing on in the computer that that has the direct connection with the printer being shared on the network and in this below screenshot, with certain persons selected, even an administrator, it puts a "no access" on the everyone option.  In this status I get the "paused for authentication" on the print jobs being submitted from any networked computer.  see below

  • Authentication required on Windows Printer

When I set up my windows network printer under leopard, it asked me to type in my user name and password to connect to the server with the windows print spooler. ok, done.
So now, when I print to that shared printer, the documents get hung up in the queue and give the document status as "On Hold (Authentication required)." If I click the document and then click RESUME, it asks me to "Enter your name and password to print to the printer." I do, but the documents do not print and the status in the queue doesn't change.
Anyone know what I'm not doing?

uhoh... just found the solution in another thread here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5852413
I have the solution for you.
Prerequisites: 1. your windows PC with the printer on it needs to have an admin account on it with a single word no spaces. (preferred unix) 2. your printer sharename is a single word (ie. Canon iP4300 should be just ip4300).
    Now follow the below steps:
    1. Open your system preferences > Open Print & Fax
    2. Click + to add a printer.
    3. Right-click on the Toolbar at the top and select "Customise Toolbar..."
    4. Drag the "Advanced" icon to the toolbar & select "Done"
    5. Click the "Advanced" icon
    6. Select "Windows" from the "Type:" drop down menu
    7. In the "URL:" textbox type the location of your windows printer in the format below (use the format depending on whether your Windows PC sharing the Printer has a password or not):
smb://username:password@ipaddress/printersharename <- Print Server does have a password
smb://username@ipaddress/printersharename <- Print Server does NOT have a password
    (eg. smb://[email protected]/ip4300)
    8. Enter a Name and Location. (Human Friendly Names with Spaces are allowed)
    9. Now select the appropriate driver and then click "Add"
    10. Try printing somthing and then it will ask for a username and password of your windows server. Type and username and then the password and then add this to your keychain and click OK.
And there you go. Printing in OSX 10.5

  • On Hold - Authentication Error - Printing in OS X Lion

    Hi all,
I am trying to print to a shared windows printer and keep getting an 'awaiting authentication error', with the print job pausing.
I shared my printer successful with a PC running vista (to which the printer is attached) but since upgrading to Lion, I am no longer able to print. When a job is sent to the printer, it processes and then a pause button appears on the printer icon, with the message 'On hold authentication required'. When I click resume, I get a pop up which asks me to enter a login and password. This information is my username and password for my login to Windows. I 'Connect as – Registered User'. When I click enter, the system thinks for a moment and the job then goes back on hold with the 'On hold authentication required'.
I have tried removing and reinstalling the printers, using different printers (connected to the same Windows PC), changing settings in CUPS, all for no result. This has only happened since I upgraded to Lion. Snow Leopard gave me no printer problems at all.
For the record, I have a 2011 Macbook Pro i5 13" with 4Gb of ram. I am printing to a Windows PC running Windows Vista over a wireless network (the Windows PC is connected via ethernet to the router). I am (trying to ) printing to an HP LaserJet 1006 and/or HP Photosmart C5280.
Anyone got any answers, I have done a search and others have the same problem, however, no offered solution seems to work.

Thank you very much! It works!

I solved my problem. I can print again. I've found an other thread(https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3193344) where they suggested looking in the keychain (just open the 'Keychain acces' application).
    So what I've done:
I removed all references in the keychain to the windows computer or printer. (I guess removing one too many won't do any harm. If the username/password is needed again, you'll be asked for it).
I removed my printer and reinstalled it
In CUPS management (http://localhost:631), I changed the DPI explicitly to 300x300 instead of default (see manage printers, default options)
And that was it. I printed, was asked for my windows credentials one more time. I entered them and all is fine now. Let's hope it stays that way.
I hope this can solve your problem as well.

The error I see is you did not specify the proper authentication for the smtp server.
In the Mail preferences for the account, smtp popup, select Edit SMTP Server List.  A sheet will drop down.  Select Advanced tab on that sheet.  You should, I assume, set the Authentication to password, and set the proper username and password.  That's where the poper would be set if 587 is not the one you should be using.  Maybe it is.  I only bring it up since I see it trying to use port 587.
If you got this stuff already set correctly then I don't know.  Mail has a problem in your setup.  Maybe delete the account and recreate it from scratch.

  • How do I permanently remove "Authentication Required" window that continues to pop up?

I am running Firefox 15.0.1 on Mac OS 10.6.8. A window continues to pop up that reads, "Authentication Required" and "Enter username and password for ftp://ftp.radiogarage.com". This happens every time Firefox is opened and continues to pop up approximately every 30-60 seconds until I close Firefox. How do I permanently remove/delete/get rid of this pop up window? I have clicked on Help > Troubleshooting Information > Reset Firefox but that has not solved the issue. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

  • Anyone know how to remove a pesky "Authentication Required" box?

I visited (shame on me!!) a tasteful but adult-oriented art photo site and by mistake clicked on a content link which required a "member subscription" to view. My system attempted to use iTunes to open the file, and it threw an "Authentication Required" nag box on the screen. The box continues, "To access this site, you need to log in to area 'Members_Only' on _____________.com. Your password will be sent in the clear.", followed by fill-in boxes for the Name and Password.
Now, I have never gone back to that site, yet almost each time I launch iTunes, I get this box, and I actually have to cancel out of it about 15 times in rapid succession before it will disappear from the screen and let the iTunes application display my music browser. Is there a preference cache file that I can trash to get rid of this, without losing any other valuable settings, like my iTunes online store registration info?

It sounds like iTunes is still trying to access or download something form that site. Let iTunes finish opening. click cancel on the dialog and check the iTunes library, podcasts and other folders.playlists for the unwanted content. Delete it when you find it.

  • How do I get rid of "Authentication Required" all the time?

In Firefox ONLY at certain sites (perhaps Google sites) a dialog box pops up and at the top it says, "Authentication Required" and I can type in any of my Google log-ins and click OK and it goes away FOR A TIME. It keeps popping up as I am browsing. There is usually a line pertaining to mail delivery. I can't seem to capture the dialog box in order to send it to you. Now that I would like to show you what it says I can't make it appear.

There is no "switch" to turn off Private Browsing. A "hack" was posted in this forum for Firefox 3.5 and 3.6 versions a number of times, but Firefox 4.0 has that file that needs to be hacked is inside the omni.jar file which makes accessing the file that controls PB a lot more difficult. Plus, the hack will probably be gone the next time Firefox is updated with a new omni.jar file.

  • FTP Authentication Required

    Hi,
    I have a IronPort S370.
Proxy FTP is not enabled, so we use FTP over HTTP.
We have create policies to access some sites FTP, but that doesn't work.
We get a message "Page cannot be displayed : FTP authentication required"
    Have you an idea ?
Thank you in advance for your help !

    Hi,
If you are using FTP over HTTP, you would have to prepend the username password in the URL. e.g:
    "ftp://USERNAME:[email protected]"
For more information, please check the section "How to access an FTP site that is not anonymous using Internet Explorer" at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb794745.aspx

When trying to launch iTunes on my PC running Windows 7 it freezes and I get the message: "Authentication Required. To access this site you need to log in to area "100656 on mellor.co. Your password will be sent in the clear." Because iTunes is frizen at this point I am unable to enter a username or password, or in fact do anything. Please help!! I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes numerous times as well as attempting all of the fixes that I could find on-line and still no joy.

That sounds extremely phishy to me... iTunes does not require authentication simply to launch it. I suspect you've got something nasty intercepting network traffic. That server may be set up to log the Apple ID that you enter so it can be used fraudulently. Try ComboFix from Bleeping Computer.
FWIW the domain mellor.co is registered to an accountants in Knutsford, Cheshire, UK, and produces the same authentication request if visited with a browser. There is no sign of a "real" publicly visible website at that domain which is a somewhat odd.

  • I just switched to Charter. When going to Mozilla Firefox a box appears saying, Authentication Required and asks for a User name and Password. What do I do?

I switched from CenturyTel to Charter. I can't use Firefox because a box appears asking me for Authentication Required, User Name and Password. When I hit cancel, this message appears:
    HTTP 401 - Unauthorized
Authorization is required to access the configuration server.
You must enter the correct username and/or password.
When I called Charter, they told me they recommended using Internet Explorer. I told them I didn't want IE, I preferred Firefox. They recommended I go to your support page, so here I am. :o)

Have you reset the password recently for the email account?
A real simple fix usually is to delete the mail account (settings < mail contacts calendars, tap the affected account and choose delete at the bottom) Then re add the account.
