On my I Mac I can't get passed the apple icon and a spinning gear under it? Any ideas?

You might try the following:
I would first reset the SMC:
Shut down and unplug the Mac.
Keep the Mac unplugged for at least fifteen seconds.
Plug the Mac back in and do not turn it back on for at least five seconds.
Press the power button to turn the Mac back on.
Then I would reset the PRAM by rebooting the iMac while simultaneously holding the Command-Option-P-R keys until the machine restarts a second time.

Your Apple TV may have become paired with another remote. Hold the remote close to and pointed at the Apple TV, hold down the menu and Rewind buttons together for 6 seconds or until you see a broken chain icon on screen.

My machine was patched to date 10.x.x. I was lucky to get an internet connection and I selected the option to re-download Lion... its curruently being downloaded. What if that doesn't work?
Any thougths would be appreciated.

Mac Book Pro Mavericks OS 10.9.5 stops at apple logo with spinning gear.

After working fine for a year, suddenly I cannot get past the apple logo with spinning gear page,
Already tried:
1. safe mode-loading bar disappears 1/3 way through,
2. downloading/reinstalling Mavericks OS-took 4 hours, reboot led right back to same issue,
3. disk/permissions repair - same issue when rebooted
4. Resetting PRAM - heard second chime - same issue

The startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault.
Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

If you're using Lion, you can resize by dragging from any corner, in Leopard and lower it can only be resized from the bottom right hand corner.

I can't get a reliable wifi signal between my Airport Express in the office and Express in the house and i can't get a cable between the two. Any suggestions for getting internet connection in both buildings?

I need to get internet to both the house and my office, which is in a separate building approx 20m from the house. I was advised by Apple to buy an Airport Express, set it up on one or other building, and connect wirelessly to the other. Tried that, but couldn't get a reliable signal.
I was then advised to buy another Airport Express and use it as an expander in the other building. Trouble is, i can't get a reliable wireless signal between the two Expresses, so it keeps dropping the connection, and is slow when it is connected.
I rang Apple again and was told that i could try a third Airport Express between the two existing ones, but that is impossible as there is only outdoors between the two.
It would be very difficult and expensive to get an ethernet cable between the two buildings (have to cut through concrete etc), and I see from the discussion forums that an Airport Extreme has the same wireless signal as an Express, so replacing one of the Expresses with an Extreme seems unlikely to resolve the problem. Can anyone think of any other options?

The Powerline adapters mentioned by edex67 are your only hope if you cannot run an Ethernet cable.
Even if the home and office are on the same electrical circuit, you won't really know how well the Powerline adapters might work until you actually try them out at your location.
For that reason, it would be a good idea to understand the store's return policy before you buy.

Can't get dvd to import into imovie? Any suggestions?

I have my sister's wedding that a friend took for me on his camcorder, and burned to a dvd for me. But when I put the dvd in I am unable to save or anything and when I go to imovie and try to import it the best I get is files unrecognizable, but I'm not even sure I'm picking the right files. . .video is in NTSC. I have unistalled iTunes and I have downloaded the latest version of iTunes, but I can't get the download to open/run. Any suggestions?

I was updating iTunes to version 11.1.4 and the installation failed. I follwed all the steps from the Apple Support website to uninstall iTunes. The Apple Mobile Device Support would not uninstall, but I proceeded based on info from the support community. I am now trying to download and install iTunes. I show that iTunes has downloaded, but I cannot get the installer program to open/run. Any suggestions for what I might try?
