On install, no disk images on desktop - HELP!

Installing to an iBook, everything loaded seemingly fine. But then...
- There are no HD or Finder icons on the desktop. Completely blank. As a result, it's rather difficult (but not impossible) to navigate. There is a Dock, however, and I can use that.
- A spinning disk is continual.
- When programs are closed, it's impossible to use the Apple-Finder-Edit-View..etc part of the desktop. (I can use the Dock menu to use most apps, but downloads and navigation on the opening screen are impossible.
I tried using Disk Utility, but I can't get that to work even on my two successful installs (iMac G5, MacBook G4).
The vanished Finder seems to be the the problem...but how do I get it back?
Thanks

Sorry to hear that...I had the exact same problem. It would take a few restarts to get to the desktop, and when I did get there, all the icons were missing and the Finder was locked up. Hopefully, you have backed up all of your data. If not, I was able to navigate to Backup/HD by using Spotlight. I tried restarting the Finder several times, but no luck.
If you have a Tiger intall disk or the restore CD's, try to boot from one of those and run Disk Utility to repair permissions. That helped a bit for me.
Ultimately, I had to boot from CD and erase the hard drive. I ended up re-installing Tiger, and I am going to wait for some of the bugs to get worked out in Leopard before I try again.
Good luck!

  • I updated to Tiger 10.4.11 & cannot mount disk images &other problems.HELP!

I just updated to Tiger 10.4.11/combo update. I used the stand alone installer (because Software Update since I updated to 10.4.10delta). I repaired permissions before and after the update. Now I can't mount disk images I always get the message "Mount Failed".This occured when downloading and trying to open an existing disk image.I ran fsck, even tried AppleJack all to no avail.I know this problem wasn't there before the update as I downloaded the update and a couple of small utilities and all was well with the world (they all mounted properly). I was doing fine with OSX 10.4.9 but just had to upgrade! Can someone PLEASE HELP ME? I'M grateful for any suggestions and the forums have been good to me in the past.

Some part of the OS is messed up... I've heard that if you Deltas you must stick with those, if you do Combos you must stick with those, no idea if it's true, as I always use the bigger Combo Updates.
Most likely the best solution for both of you is an Archive & Install...

  • Big mistake...renamed disk image on desktop...

Yup. I just can't leave well enough alone. I set up time capsule with little trouble and it ran for 3 weeks. Then, like a jerk, I renamed this little disk image on my desktop. Couldn't remember it being there before...so I just renamed it and tried to throw it away!
    BIG MISTAKE.
Now time machine says it failed and is now unable to mount the backup.
So I just "entered the time machine" and then exited. No big deal.
    BUT...
After that, any attempt to backup leads to a total crash requiring a restart.
Is anybody as dumb as me? Without admitting dumbness, is anybody willing to offer a solution? or should I just start all over again?

Now any time I try to back up, or merely access TC, I get the total, dimmed-screen system crash. SOMEBODY HELP!!!!!!!

  • Disk image on desktop

What does it mean, and what did I do wrong, if every time I click on a program, it mounts to the desktop like it did when I first installed it, thereby leaving the image on the desktop until I eject it?

    Jargra,
A Disk Image is like a "virtual disk" contained in a single file. This is the "disk image file." When the file is opened, the "volume" it represents is mounted on your Desktop just like a physical disk. Once mounted, it behaves like a physical disk.
Many OS X applications come in disk images. You are supposed to either 1) run the installer that is stored in the disk image, or 2) drag the application that is stored in the disk image to your "Applications" folder.
I think your confusion comes from the idea that dragging the application, still located in the disk image, to your Dock will "install" it. In fact, all this does is create a shortcut to the application that is still located in the disk image.
Mount the disk image on your Desktop. Open it up, and find the application that is stored there. Open your hard drive, then open the "Applications" folder. Drag the application from the disk image to the "Applications" folder. You can now eject the disk image, find the disk image file, drag it to the trash and empty it. Once you have done this, drag the current icon for that application out of your Dock. Locate the copy of the application that is now in your "Applications" folder and drag it to your Dock.

  • Time Machine placing multiple disk images on Desktop

    Hi,
I have recently set-up a 2TB Time Capsule for one of my clients.
Each time Time Machine does an hourly backup - it places a Disk Image icon on the desktop called e.g.'Backup of Anya' - which is basically the sparse disk image mounting from the Time Capsule on the Desktop temporarily whilst TM backs up to it - the problem however is the disk image does not auto-unmount when completed ...
An hour later it will mount another Disk Image backup on the desktop - and so on and so on and so on ...
by the end of the day there are close to 10 unmounted Time Machine backup disks on the desktop - and subsequently in each machines 'Devices' panel in the Finder - all across the network ...
Does anyone know why or how this is happening?
It's my understanding the the image should automatically unmount when TM has completed its hourly backup.
    I'm stumped ...

  • Downloading programs creates disk image on desktop...

When I downloaded Picasa (and Skype) from the web, it created a disk image instead of just installing the program.  When I try to open it from the disk image, it says it is from an unidentified developer and asks for permission to open it.  Is there a way to get this to install the program like others?

You should be happy to get a dialog asking for permission and your password - with all the malware all over the internet, it is much safer that way.
Most of the time, you will get a .dmg and you will need to authorize the install - another safety feature.
Now, a new feature of ML is that safety net of any application that does not come from the app store or the developer has not yet signed with Apple that his apps are ok, you will get that dialog. You can turn it off by going to the Security & Privacy Pane in System Preferences > General > and check "anywhere" (you must click the lock and enter your password first). Or, you can leave the default setting, and when you click to open a downloaded app, hit the Control key while clicking to open and you will get a regular "open" dialog.

  • Unsuccessful in creating simple Disk Image action - please help

I am new to Automator and thought I was getting the hang of it. I am trying to create a simple action that will take my selected files, then put them into a .dmg. I want it to ask for a name and location each time. I thought I had it but every time it creates the image it self deletes. Now I am totally confused.
I searched for "disk image" in the forum but didn't find anything.
    Thanks for any help.
    CHris

It sounds like you are unmounting the dmg when done - what actions are in your current workflow? You can use the option to show the action when it runs to get a dialog with the selected items for you to put in the names and location.
    1) Get Selected Finder Items
    2) New Disk Image {  Options:
                Show this action when the workflow runs;
                Show only the selected items (check Volume name, Save as, in)  }

  • Tiger 10.4.11 update install reads disk image fails to mount

i've been trying to download the tiger 10.4.11 upgrade and when i go to open i get the following disc images failed to mount and a reason of item not recognized. i'm at a lose considering ti've downloaded the update several times with my slow dial up and tried disc utilty to correct it, all i want to do is use my new ipod nano but need to upgrade my itunes which means i need to upgrade my software please help pretty frustrated.

Would the same error occur if the update being downloaded is for an intel based computer and not the PPC, which is what is needed?
Here's the page for the 10.4.11 combo PPC download
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateppc.html
Depending also what level of 10.4 you are presently at, downloading smaller combos/increments, may seem time consuming, but actually work better with dial up service. I was once dial up myself, and went through the same difficulty. Also with doing it this way, you would have to repair permissions with each download, and reboot if any were repaired. There would also be numerous security downloads, too.

  • Disk Utility Error 61 when attempting to create disk image on external driv

I would like to make occasional archive backups of my three macintosh computers. I bought a new Western Digital 2TB drive for this purpose, and formatted it as Mac OS Extended. Trying to do a disk image backup using Disk Utility, I follow the directions:
    - Startup from an install DVD.
    - Start Disk Utilities and select "Restore"
    - Drag "Macintosh HD" into the Source box
    - Click on "New Image" and select compressed and 128-bit AES encryption
This leads to the error message: Unable to create "....." (error -61)
I have enocountered this problem both with my iMac G5 and a MacBook, both running Leopard.
Does anyone know what this error means, what I am doing wrong, and/or if there is another way to create disk image backups? Help!

    1. For reasons I don't know disc images seem to become more fragile the larger they get. They also can be subject to file corruption that affects the entire disc image, whereas file corruption on a clone would only affect certain files.
    2. You cannot put multiple clones on the same volume. Each clone must be on a separate volume, but you can have multiple volumes on a single drive simply by partitioning the drive accordingly. Of course you need a drive large enough to accommodate each clone. Each clone should be to a space equal to the capacity of the cloned drive.
    3. I'm not a big fan of TM, although I must confess it has become more reliable since it's release, especially with Snow Leopard. However, there are many backup utilities that can create clones, perform incremental updates, and archive changed files. See the following:

  • IDVD 6.02  track initialization problems and no disk image

"There was an error during track initialization and iDVD can't continue burning this DVD (the disc has not been touched yet!). Select 'Delete Encoded Assets' from the Advanced-menu and try burning this project again."
This has happened 5 times now both when trying to burn to DVD-R and trying to save as disk image on desktop. Very frustrating.
Project exported to IDVD from Keynote 3.01 running OSX 10.4.7 on a Powermac G5 D2.3 GHz with 2.5GB RAM.
The project is just 1GB using iDVD 4 theme "Transparent Blue" with a run time of 15:14 mins and HD has over 20GB free.
Also tried it from the other internal HD which has over 100GB free.

Both TV (using a Sony DVD player) and on my Lacie
Photon 20 monitor - the slideshow jpegs and Keynote
fonts look poor compared to the straight QT movies
that are part of the project and made using iMovie.
Your QT movies are probably much higher resolution than your DVD.
    JEPGS are pretty hi res.
Ultimately, all the resolution you can get on an NTSC DVD is 640x480 pixels in the square pixel terms of digital cameras. The HD discs we can create today have the same 'limited' resolution - they just stretch the pixels on playback.
Someday ... when we can all afford systems with TRUE HD format burners and players, things will get better.

  • DVD burned from a disk image won't work on different computers???

Under the directions for how to burn a DVD from an disk image, the Apple Help document (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93006) says this:
"Note: When burning a disc from a disk image, the burned disc will have the same format as the disk image. If you need a disc that will work on different computers, burn the disc in the Finder."
Does this mean that the DVDs that I am burning from the disk image won't be able to be played on a PC? a Mac other than mine? Neither? WHAT? I am planning to sell the DVDs of a workshop I present -- to people who may be playing them on PCs. Should I not be using this method (burning from a disk image) to burn my DVDs?

Video DVDs are in the UDF format. The disk image you created is in the UDF format. When you use Disk Utility to burn the disk image to writable media, the new discs will be in UDF format and all will be well.
    You are doing things correctly.
BTW, unless you have an external burner with lots of cooling, if you expect to use the burner in your Mac (which DOESN'T have lots of cooling), it's a good idea to pause between discs to allow the burner to cool down. (BTW, this comment is based on the reported results of several people in the forum. If you don't allow the cool down timer, you will start to create 'bad' discs. Also it is VERY important that you reduce the burn speed in Disk Utility to 4x or lower in order to create discs with maximum compatability with players. (You should see a way to change the speed in Disk Utility afterr you have inserted a disc.)

  • Scanned images lost via disk image

Scanned over 400 slides using Canon 8600 with PhotoStudio and saved as JPGs. To transfer to a PC I selected to save as an MS-Dos format and understood I had to create a Disk Image. Did all that, now I can't find any trace of the JPGs I saved, and no Disk Images are noted when I searched the hard drive. Any ideas how to locate my pictures?

Have found my .dmg files I scanned in. They are in KeyChain App and have been unlocked, but I can't find a way to get the JPG images out of the disk image. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Burn disk image with a pc

Hi, I would like to know, if it is possible to burn a idvd disk image with a pc.
(I want to get a macbook, and since I already own a pc with a dvd-burner I think it would be best to save the 200 $ and just get the cheapest model. I still want to be able to burn a few iDVD Projekts so the question is, what kind of format iDvD saves the images in - iso or some fancy mac format?)

I just updated bt desktop help as it kept popping up to tell me to update it but it seems to have instilled pcCMService.exe which my virus checker is unhappy about. Should this file be installed as part of the desktop help or should I delete it?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I would not install it. It can be used to install a virus onto your system. In this case it may be being used bt BT to install the desktop helper. Having said that I would also not install desktop helper. It is not needed. Your system will run perfectly without it and if you have any problems you can always find help on this site.

  • I can't get the Firefox Disk Image to go away. I delete it after install, but everytime I open the program the program asks to be installed again. Help?

I downloaded the update .DMG for 4.0.1 and installed the program to my applications folder like instructed. Then deleted the .dmg and "application disk image" (the icon looks like an external device on the desktop). But now every time I open Firefox, the program prompts me to install it to the applications folder again. Am I missing something?

Thanx. I suspected it might have something to do with FF 4.0 still being in Beta. Guess I'm heading back to the old version until such time as the changes are made.
    Again, many thanx. Pete
