Leopard replacement for Landau's Mac OS X Help Line book?

Can anyone recommend a Leopard replacement for Ted Landau's Mac OS X Help Line? I have the 10.3 and 10.4 versions of this invaluable troubleshooting guide and wanted to recommend the 10.5 version to a friend with that OS, but I just found out that he decided not to update it for Leopard. Would really appreciate knowing about a similar comprehensive, literate, easy-to-understand troubleshooting manual for 10.5, if there is one as good as Landau's. Thanks for any good suggestions!

I'm actually trying help out a friend who's just bought her first Mac in about 10 years, after years of working only with Windows--want to save her investing in a bunch of expensive manuals that tell you everything you need to know, occasionally in English, except how to find out what's wrong and fix it, which is the only thing I want to know! I've used Landau's guides for Panther and Tiger, and was dismayed to find out that he didn't feel like rewriting 1200 pages for Leopard. So I'm curious to see the book you recommend, which sounds good--will let you know.

Impossible buying on line book

Hi there,
I cannot buy online a photo book. The screen I see when clicking on [Buy Book...] is the following. There is no [preview], or [place order], or [continue] or [next] or [buy] button. Entering my Apple ID and my password does not change anything on the screen. My only options after having signed in is the button [Cancel]!
The template of the book is a standard one with no changes. The number of pages is between 20 and 100.
My Mac is an iMac "Core i5" 2,5 GHz, 21,5 inch (mid 2011), Model Nr. A1311
running on OS X Maverick 10.9.4
The installed version of Aperture is 3.5.1
Any idea what's the problem?

Have you enabled Express checkout at the Apple Store?
Edit your billing address directly at the Apple Store page and try again:
Reenter (not just check) all billing address details at the Apple Store and enable express checkout: at the AppleStore page http://store.apple.com/
Click the "ViewAccount " link
And then enable "express checkout", if it is not enabled.
While you are at it, check your billing address and country settings at the AppStore.
The Apple Store should open for the country you are currently in. Check in your system preferences, if the region is set to the country where your AppleID is valid, and also your payment method/credit card.

How to copy line items from one expense report to the next

I travel to the same project/destination every week so in PR05, I was able to just copy the previous expense report for the new week and edit the expense values. Now, when I book travel, the air line booking starts a new expense report entry.
Is there a way to copy the employee-paid expenses to the GetThere-generated trip entry expense report, i.e. just copy the line items from one expense report to another that already exists. I guess that would be a merge function.

Here are two alternative solutions:
Alternative 1:
If you copy the expense report before you book the services (flight, hotel …)
in GetThere, then the airline or hotel bookings will not start a new expense
report but will be assigned to the copied expense report.
Alternative 2:
This alternative is a bit laborious.
Shift the start date and end date of the expense
report that was automatically created by
your flight booking for next week (e.g. Calendar Week (CW) 47) to the week after next week (e.g. CW 48).
Copy the expense report of the previous week (e.g.
46)
Afterwards open the expense report that you
moved to CW 48 and click on the tab strip itinerary
Now assign the bookings (flight, hotel …) to the
expense report of CW 47 by clicking on the button assign to existing trip
Later delete the expense report in CW 48
Get back to me if you have any questions concerning the alternatives outlined
above.
Note:
These solution alternatives are only available for customes using HTML5 UIs.

Printing with Book and paint()

I'm posting this because I'm hoping someone can unconfuse me!
I'm trying to use a Book class, so the correct number of pages appears in the printer dialogue. However, I don't seem to be able to get this to work. My confusion is over the following. In http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/docs/guide/2d/spec/j2d-print.fm4.html (section 7.4.2) it has an example with the following three lines:
Book bk = new Book();
bk.append(new PaintCover(), pfl);
bk.append(new PaintContent(), job.defaultPage(), 2);
and it states this is used to print two pages. Yet the API states the third parameter 'Appends numPages pages to the end of this Book.' This would imply three pages are printed, one of PaintCover and two of PaintContent.
Furthermore, there is the pgnum parameter in the print() method. Now I would have thought that is tied in with this third Book parameter. But that seems to have a life of its own. It is supposed to be a zero-based index. But does that mean that PaintContent.print() will initially receive the value 1 (ie page 2), and be called twice (because of the argument 2) in the code extract above?
If so, do you need to have the Printable.NO_SUCH_PAGE return value in the method?
Perhaps my question should be: how do the third parameters of the Book class and paint() methods work, and how do they relate to each other.
As I say I am very badly confused, and any advice, help or otherwise prodding in the correct direction will be welcomed! :-)

Printable.NO_SUCH_PAGE is usefull when u r not using Book ..
ex, if you use
book = new Book();
book.append(this,pageFormat,10);
printJob.setPageable(book); it will print 10 pages
and
printJob.setPrintable(this,pageFormat); will print until you call Printable.NO_SUCH_PAGE - which is usefull when you dont know number of pages

Losing the will to live been charged booked order ...

I am going crazy I have had an order cancelled without my day so and 3 cancelled days where no one has turned up over £300 pounds worth of billed phone calls to speak to someone in India that had no clue
I have had to book 3 days of work unpaid
And once again the 4 th time and I'm sitting here waiting for someone to turn up
This is not acceptable and I can't even speak to anyone to camel my order I'm disgraced with the service I have revived and have tried to complain several times and not had one phone call bk from the non existent complaints department
I DO NOT WISH to speak from someone in India again and would like someone who knows what they are doing to call me today to cancel my order and repay me the money that has been taken from my account
I have been waiting 4 months for a phone to be put in my daughter moves in to the property this weekend and also had a care line booked in for her which now I have to pay a cancelation charge as I have now had to cancel them as well

Looking for book about building secured webpages

Hi, I'm looking for a good book about building secured webpages, the use of SSL etc.
Can't find much about this subject. Anyone?!

It depends on what you wish to do and which language you wish to use (php, asp, .net, jave, etc), also which server you will be using.
If you are new to the subject a good starting point would be a book on your preferred langages security, (e.g. PHP security, .net security), a simple search at any of the on-line book stores will deliver a long list (the newer ones are normally better as they cover the newer versions of the language).
As for building an e-commerce system (or similar), the above books and a good book in programming generally is also helpful, (ensure it covers processing on-line payments).
If you wish to build a 'ssl vpn', then I have found, "SSL VPN: Understanding, Evaluating and Planning Secure, Web-Based Remote Access" by Joseph Steinberg a good start.

Printed books for CVI 5.5

Hi,
I've given up trying to find any information on National's web site.
I was just surprised to finding CVI 5.5 installed on my test platform.
I'm accustomed to working from CVI 5.0 and the behavior and IDE are
different enough that I'm going to have to re-learn how to use CVI.
But I can't seem to find any printed manuals that accompanied the CVI
5.5 license.
Should there be printed manuals, or has National decided on-line manuals
are sufficient? (They're not, IMO.) How can I get printed manuals?

I went back the next day, without the added pressure of a colleague
waiting for me to produce output, and discovered that the changes from
version 5.1 to 5.5 aren't that much. I also opened the on-line manual
at my desk, on my 21" monit
or which I have set to high-res (compared to
the 15" monitor at medium res, which is what's available to me in the
lab) and was able to see the illustrations.
On-line books are *not* adequate!!!

Infinity order delays and confusion

Hi,
I am hoping someone from BT will read this post and urgently get back to me personally with an accurate and honest update on my order. I have spoken to numerous people in the contact centre's who have provided me with no confidence about my order.
I originally ordered New Phoneline & Infinity on the 14th August to be installed on 6th September. I received a call a few days later saying the 6th wasn't possible and the appointment was now going to be the 10th September.
I called the team back who had left me a voicemail advising of the change in appointment and confirmed that on the 10th September that both Phone + Infinity would be installed. I was told the delay was due to a line plant availability issue which needed another engineer to deal with, before my order could progress.
A few days later again, I checked BT.com and it still showed the 6th September activation date and appointment date for both Phone + Infinity, so I called the Contact Centre to see what was happening. I was informed that the Infinity would not be installed on the 10th Sept, as only the Openreach engineer was going to be available on that date.
I was told that the person who I spoke to about the appointment change to the 10th was wrong and that Phone + Inifinity was never going to be installed on the same day. I was also informed that no appointment was set for the Infinity, so at this stage I was only going to be having phone line on the 10th and the infinity was still to be arranged. I therefore had to choose a later date for the Infinity, so I opted for Tuesday 13th September.
After this, my bt.com order tracking page showed only the activation days, which are both still showing as 6th September (even as of today) and no appointments are listed at all.
Today (6th September) I received an SMS saying my phoneline was being activated today, again confusing me as I know (or thought) that there was no appointment for phone line booked for today. Again, another call to the contact centre. This time I was advised my order had actually been cancelled. This annoyed me as you would expect. The agent then went on to confirm with Openreach and came back and retracted his statement and confirmed there was indeed an appointment for the 10th September for my phone line. He wouldn't however confirm my Infinity would be installed on the 13th September.
I currently have little confidence that my phoneline will be activated on the 10th and have zero confidence that my Inifity will be installed on the 13th September, likewise, I have no confidence that my bill will be correct given I have had SMS's and updates and BT.com still shows the 6th September for activation for both Phone line and the Infinity.
I would really appreciate it if someone from BT can get in touch with me to clarify exactly what is happening with my order, provide me with assurance as to when I will have a working phone and broadband service and also explain why I have received such a confusing order process.

I am really sorry for the confusion here. I can understand that this would start to become annoying given everything you have been told.
The SMS message and the bt.com are still working off the original details. If you have spoken with someone confirming that the dates have changed then this is the most uptodate info and the website and SMS should be ignored.
I'll be happy to have a look over the order and clear everything up and keep an eye on its progress until its closed.

How do I actually get this server functioning?

Brief history:
- Snow Leopard Server working fine. MacPro, Mirrored Boot Drive (RAID 1).
- Initial install failed and left the server in a reboot/install failure cycle with no recovery possible (Lion Server has no official recovery disk - apart from some tricks that have been documented in some places apart from Apple Support - where I keep finding some help and then finding 404 errors a day later as the help is pulled - about pulling apart the Lion install package to try and create a boot disk).
- FYI the boot/recovery disk approach that was mentioned above did not work on my machine at all.
- After splitting my RAID mirror and converting all drives to regular drives and restoring my Snow Leopard Server install using the SL Server disk and Time Machine to something functioning I was able to install the Lion Server.
- The I rebuilt my RAID 1 mirror of the boot disk and things are now functioning.
Notes:
- The Server application doesn't seem to trust the old server's certificates and almost every service is blinking green/off as launchctl tries to launch services and then they fail.
- My purchased SSL certificate was not present in the server anywhere seeming to have disappeared into a black hole so NO web services were functioning. This included Wiki, Push, Web, etc etc. I had to re-issue the SSL cert using the new server and add it. Things seem to now recognize my SSL certificate now.
Questions:
- Services are all trying to start and failing. I am getting many many log entries about this. I am able to log in using my domain account so it seems that OD upgraded OK (maybe). But everything else is a mess. Any suggestions on where to start cleaning up the mess? (This is partially related to my next question).
- Where did DNS, Firewall, Software Update Server, OD configuration go to? I run my own DNS server for my domain, have reasonably customized firewall rules to suit my server and services. The server app has no mention of these items. Am I left with command line tools for these again? This would be several steps backward from the prior server.

I can go and get out my bind and server admin command line books as necessary too. But I will take a look through this and see if I can restore some normalcy
I _always_ get suckered by Apple's server OS into buying and installing it when it comes out - expecting that my configuration will migrate and work seamlessly 'it just works'. But I am now starting to take the view that this is just too painful an experience.
There really is no easy upgrade for Apple's Server. (I have run various Linux servers in the past and had seamless upgrade experiences with those - Red Hat, SUSE, Ubuntu to name three have just worked out of the box on day 1 in recent years).
But the server just seems the same quality between Tiger - Leopard - Snow Leopard. The pain and lost weekends trying to make this work are hugely frustrating.
Here I go again - probably for the last time.

I will soon be travelling for three weeks with my iPad. While enroute airlines will offer me on-line booking and seat reservations via email, which then transfers me to a website. When I open the site, and fill in the required details I cannot print out the form unless I have access to a wireless printer.
There may be ways around this but one solution would be to save the form and send it as an attachment in an email to a friend or the hotel desk and ask them to print it. But I can't work out how this can be done. Thanks for any help.

I realize that Copy & Paste on an IOS device is relatively new, but I didn't realize that it was that much different from Copy & Paste on a Mac.
On the Mac, all the images on the page are sent as an attachment, and at least for the website that I tried this on, Mail did a better job than Evernote of rendering the page.
I guess what I don't understand is for IOS devices, if Copy & Paste only pastes links to the images, then is Evernote modifying how Copy & Paste works in Safari or is it modifying how Mail Link to this Page works. Or, I guess it could be downloading the images after it receives the message, but this wouldn't work for pages from secure sites that are only accessible for your http session.

Doing Calculations in a css webpage using java

I run a small website for ex members of an RAF Squadron. We would like to offer items for sale on the site but do not want to go down the route of a shopping trolly scenario where by we have to deal with electronic cash payments. To this end I have done a small page that has a table. I would like to be able to present the prospective purchaser with a total cost at the end of thier shopping trip. I was wondering if anyone could help me with the code
i.e one field is quantity the other is total so the math is x*y simple, even this old grey hair cabn work that out but how do I make it look pretty on the site?
I have tried to do it using jbots in frontpage , but these don't seem to like the table structure

Seems to me your question is about Javascript. At least, that is how you would get calculations done in a web page (CSS has nothing to do with that). However this forum is about Java, which is a completely different language.

Printing function gets called twice..!

The following is my class that prints a string array which sometimes goes into multiple pages.. The code in which i create the multiple pages is below this class.. the problem is each time i append a new page to the book the print function in the class PaintC is called twice.. so if I write some additional code inside the print function to edit the strings .. it ends up running twice and the formatting i try to do gets messed up.. !! do you guys know why this is happening..? Please help.. ive been trying to find out since a very long time..!!

I am new to this whole world of on-line books and am trying to download a PDF file for one of my textbooks at my on-line college. I have Adobe 7.0.9 (they told us not to use 8.0) and have attempted to "authorize" my computer for two days now. Everytime I try it, I get the same error message "the adobe DRM activator is not responding". I have turned off my pop-up blocker and disabled the firewall. Any other suggestions? Thanks!

I am experiencing the same issue as Jennifer. Any suggestions, I've tried downloading and reinstalling with no help. Please provide some feedback.
