? on make second copy on import

Hi All,
when you check make second copy when importing files lightroom stores a copy of the files in a location of your choosing, when you make changes or add metadata to the primary file does lightroom add the changes to your backup copy?
Thanks
Mike

No.  It is a once off copy of the imported files.  The second copy is not associated with the catalog at all.

  • Make a second copy on import to external drive and copy the file by date

In earlier versions I made second copies of files imported to an external hard drive.  The files would import and automatically create a capture date file folder in the same manner as importing by date to the primary internal drive.  At some point this feature seems to have gone away and now I get a folder on the external drive:  p:\\pictures\2014\Imported on Tuesday, April 22, 2014.  What I would like is:  p:\\pictures\2014\2014-04-22
Is there anyway to force this to happen?  I really hate having to manually move lots of files and create folders to keep the system I have had for years that organizes my files by date of capture on both the primary and backup drives.

Short answer: No. That is the way it is.
Why? The Make Second Copy during Import is designed to be a backup of your memory card processes-not a back up of your files as you store them on disk. It is intended to be a transient copy that allows you an immediate backup until such time as a File System Level backup can be performed, allowing you to have two copies so that you can reformat your memory cards.
I agree it would be nice if the folder storage strategy was duplicated for the backup as it is created for the import but that is not something you can set the program to do currently.  I remember it behaving differently versions ago but do not recall exactly how it used to work.

  • Does iphoto create a second copy during import?

If I upload photos from my SDHC card into a directory that I designate, and then import them into iPhoto, does iPhoto create a second copy of the image file?
    MJT

    Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
If you're using a Managed Library then this backs up everything: Photos, metadata, edits, books, slideshows and all.
If you want to just back up the Photos then File -> Export is the way to go.
Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events.
There is never a need to go into the Library package.

  • Any easy way to remove files copied to second drive on import that were later deleted from catalog?

If I do an import from my memory card, choose my external hard drive as a second location for the import, and then go into my catalog and delete the bad photos, is there any quick way to also remove those files from the backup on the external hard drive? I've got a ton of wasted space on my external HD due to things that I've deleted and don't know of any simple way to get rid of them short of formatting the drive and doing another export, which takes a long time and isn't something I want to do all that often. Thanks for your help.

I'm afraid there is no easy way to do that. The problem is that in using the "make second copy" option as your prime image backup, you're not using the function in quite the way the developers intended. Their purpose was to provide a method to take an immediate extra copy of the contents of the memory card, thus allowing you you reuse that memory card before your "regular" backup routine has been run. So yes, they have assumed that you would have a separate backup procedure for your image files, which allows for two things:
    1. That separate backup process could use an incremental backup utility, which means after the very first run all subsequent runs would backup only new or changed files....and you could also set it to delete from the backup any files you cull from the Lightroom library. Thus your backup wouldn't take up any more space than your originals.
    2. Once you've run the backup utility (after first cull so the duds never even get backed up?), the "second copy" can be deleted at your leisure.

  • Import "make a second copy" no longer creates "Imported on..." subfolder?

In Lightroom 2, the option to create a second copy in another location would put the file copies under a new subfolder called "Imported on <date>", but using the image's original file name.  In LR 3, the file renaming system is used (nice!), but the files are not put in new subfolders based on import date, so the second copies all end up in a single folder unless I manually specify a new second copy folder for each import.  Am I missing something, or is there some way to have subfolders automatically created when making second copies on import?

I was happy to see the forced use of "Imported on..." folders has ended, I'd posted about that a year or two ago wondering how we were supposed to remember the day of the week we imported them when looking for a set of originals.
It seemed to me that using a system of year folders with day folders in them might be more practical. At least that's the way I've set up my catalog for the imported files using "Custom Name - Original File Number" naming tokens. (Folder 2010 has files named 2010-01-xxxx for all photos taken in January 2010). Unfortunately, it seems LR won't make the year and day folders automatically for the original files backup.
"Make a Second Copy To:" does let me choose a folder on my backup disk right with all the "Imported Ons" which someday I hope to retrieve orginals from to put into a similar arrangement. Am thinking of doing one folder per month such as 2010-01 and just have the whole month's shots in order by the original file number after the year/month designation.
After looking back at previous years' backups I find many originals sets that were renamed and some that weren't -- assume that LR 2 was doing that. It did seem to have a mind of it's own sometimes.
I found your post as I was going to post suggesting that "Make a Second Copy To" was slightly misleading as my copies for the Catalog are converted to DNGs and I was unsure if these backup files would also be converted. I was relieved to find they are still in the CR2 format but disappointed they do not have my renaming scheme so I could match up with the DNG copy...
...maybe it should say "Backup Original File To".

  • Importing Photos - Make a copy?

    Hi
When you import photos into the Library, fors LR3 make a copy of these photos in another location, duplicating them?
I recently bought a new external hard drive which I want to use as my primary for photo editing. I have loaded the hard drive with all my RAWS - If I select import to Library, with LR3 copy these, or will it simply direct the library to that location?
    Thanks

When you import photos into the Library, fors LR3 make a copy of these photos in another location, duplicating them?
    Yes, for backup.
If I select import to Library, with LR3 copy these, or will it simply direct the library to that location?
You choose. If you simply "add" (use Add option) them, you'll simply "direct the library" to that location. If you choose to copy photos from your new external hard drive to another location, you may choose to make a second copy for back up.
Note that the "second copy" option is not available when you "add" photos at current location, rather than copy to a new location.

Hi - I'm having the same problem with freeing up space on the HD. If I can't free space if I'm using any part of the clip, how can I split up the clips so that I can discard the part I won't use? This is crazy! I have only 4 GB of free space left!
Also, I've tried to transfer the project file to my external HD but I keep getting an error saying I can't transfer it. I've been told this is because I don't have enough space on the HD for the transfer. I tried a similar transfer with another computer with plenty of HD space but the same error occurred. Is there a way to break up the project file into small pieces for the transfer (I'm thinking the whole movie file is just too big)?
    Thanks for any info!

  • How can I make a second copy so I can make some changes, but lose the original document?

How can I make a copy of my new pdf convert to word document without losing the original document?

    Hi mariponce,
Is it the Word document that you want to make a copy of, or the PDF? In either case, you can choose File > Save As (in the appropriate application), and give the file a new name. For example, if you have a file named "HappyTimes.docx," you could choose File > Save As, and name the file "HappyTimes2.docx." Then, you'll have two Word files, and you can edit one and leave the other intact.
    Best,

  • File renaming and second copy

If I import RAW and tick 'Copy as DNG' and 'Make a second Copy' and 'File rename: Prefix-Date-Image#', the 'second' copies are not DNG and not renamed.
If I import JPEG and tick 'Copy' and 'Make a second Copy' and 'File rename: Prefix-Date-Image#', the 'second' copies are renamed!
So why in case of RAWs are the second copies not renamed? This bug precludes the use of more than one camera at a shoot.
    LR3.6
How come??? I recall this was an old issue; is it too difficult to repair such a simple bug???

If this is changed, make sure it is a choice as otherwise the copy function is of no use to me. I do not want LR to make changes to the original files that I copy for backup in any way. I use the function for how it was designed (a temporary back up with no changes made to the files from the card) and make back ups of the files in the LR catalog separately. Once everything is safely backed up I can then delete the temporary copies.
I would guess there are lots of others like me who don't want this situation changed as we have been doing this for several years now since prior to LR 1 when the thing was in beta..

  • IPhoto File Management - Copy On Import?

    Hi there,
I've recently upgraded my iMac and imported my old Iphoto library. I've been looking through the preferences and noticed that the program works in a similar fashion to itunes in a sense that you have the option to not make a copy of the files when importing. I presume therefore this would result in a referenced database? I'm considering changing from the default setting to this in order to prevent the many duplicates that are generated by Iphoto which take up extra space. I understand from a few tests (within finder) that a copy is created in the originals folder, and if any modifications are made then a copy will go in the modified folder as well as having a thumbnail version in the data folder (all within the iphoto library). In all that makes a total of 4 files for each imported photo, (the master original plus 3 extras). I know the thumbnail is mandatory for the program to function correctly but what are the advantages of allowing iphoto to manage itself rather than me manage it as a reference database? I prefer to manage itunes myself (no copy's on import) as i have over 15000 320kbps mp3's which total nearly 300GB and seems ridiculous to duplicate it to 600GB. In context i have around 1200 pictures in my iphoto library and the file size of the database is only a couple of gig which is nothing in comparison, but i like to keep a tidy file system on my machine with nothing on it that isn't needed.
If i was to decide to manage the library myself with no copies which would be the best way to go about it? I have viewed a couple of other threads and Old Toad seems to give the impression that poking about and moving/deleting files manually within finder is a bad idea. I've recently created a holiday book project which contains a lot of family holiday photos from the library in a chosen layout and theme. If i created a new database with the option not to copy then re-added all my photos is there any way of retaining my book project?
In summary i want peoples opinions (especially Old Toad) of the advantages/disadvantages for each preference. Am i turning into a obsessive compulsive who's stressing over nothing!?
(Am i correct in thinking that a referenced library wont save any metadata?)

Yes you can run a Referenced Library with iPhoto 08 but I strongly recommend against it.
Here's how ot works: iPhoto will not copy the files on import, but rather simply reference them on your HD. It will create an alias to the Original file, a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version.
    Here's why I don;t recommend it:
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, there are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Your choice, obviously, but best to be aware of all the ramifications. By all means post back if you require more info.
Bluntly, there is no advantage to running a referenced library and three major disadvantages.
    To specific cases:
I'm considering changing from the default setting to this in order to prevent the many duplicates that are generated by Iphoto which take up extra space.
    It saves nothing.
I understand from a few tests (within finder) that a copy is created in the originals folder, and if any modifications are made then a copy will go in the modified folder as well as having a thumbnail version in the data folder (all within the iphoto library). In all that makes a total of 4 files for each imported photo, (the master original plus 3 extras)
Why are you keeping the "master original"? What does that achieve. Best to let iPhoto copy it into the Library and manage the file and then get rid of the "master original". That's the effective way to save space.
Beware comparisons between iTunes and iPhoto. The iTunes db is a very simple affair. It tracks the location of the file plus and playlists it may be used in, plus some metadata. The iPhoto db tracks the location of the file and any albums it may be in and some metadata... plus
The relationship between the thumbnail and the Original
The relationship between the thumbnail, Original and Modified version
Tracks any edits made by iPhoto
Tracks all the print products - boos, cards, calendars
and so on. It's a much more complex beast.
I have viewed a couple of other threads and Old Toad seems to give the impression that poking about and moving/deleting files manually within finder is a bad idea.
This is not a bad idea. It's a way to break your iPhoto Library. It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss.
If i created a new database with the option not to copy then re-added all my photos is there any way of retaining my book project
No. A book is only in a database file. There is no way to move a book from one library to another.
Am i turning into a obsessive compulsive who's stressing over nothing!
I'm not in a position to judge, but as I sadi above there is no upside to running a referenced library and plenty of downside.
(Am i correct in thinking that a referenced library wont save any metadata?)
    No, it will.

  • Location for 2nd copy on import

I'm just getting started with the LR trial (Win7, 32bit).  When importing, the "make a second copy to" "Choose Folder" is forcing a location within my User folder on C: or the desktop.   Is there a way to pick some other location (am I missing something?) The obvious place for a second copy is a backup external hard drive.

    Elliot,
This happens occasionally. It's a bug that seems to crop up if your desktop has too many icons. Weird, eh?
If the dialogue box you get when you click "Choose Folder" has a text box at the bottom, type in the path to your external drive there. That seems to fix the problem pretty much permanently.
If that box doesn't appear in your versions of LR and OS, then you'll have to clean up your desktop. Try putting some of the icons into their own folder.

  • Syncronization: How can i store mail for different accounts remotely, and copy most important mails manually to local folders on two devices?

Hello. I have two devices and two accounts, so what i want is this:
I only want to store mail from both accounts in a remote place and copy most important mails to local folders.
(I will be grateful for any ideas as to where/how this "cloud" can be - specially free places)
    * Can I have a copy of these local folders in both devices and the remote storage?
    * Could i synchronize devices so that: when i move a mail to a local folder in any device, its copied to the same folders in
the other device and the remote storage place?
    * The remote storage place will have many other folders. When I open Thunderbird, I also want to see these and the mail
inside, and also be able to move mail from the inbox to these folders.
    * One of the accounts is gmail. In Account Setting tool, there is an option for synchronization. If there is no easier way, I can have mail for other account copied to gmail, and just syncronize gmail mail. For this, how will I copy my present folder structure to gmail. And how can I syncronize the local folders on the two devices?
    Thanks in advance.

The first awkwardness I see is that there's no obvious format in which to store messages remotely such that you can work with them in an email client. It may be possible to set the "Local Directory" option in the account in Thunderbird to point at some remote folder (DropBox comes to mind) but I have never tried this and I'd be nervous about what happens if connection can't be made, or if you happened to access it from two different places simultaneously. The other concern is that mail stores get big, quickly, and you'd be forever uploading and downloading large (multi gigabyte) files. Thunderbird stores what looks like a folder containing many separate messages as one big file, so there's no simple opportunity for incremental changes to be up/down loaded.
The whole idea of Local Folders in Thunderbird is to detach messages from servers, so they don't track what happens on servers. I say this to point out the distinction between files stored locally and permanently ("Local Folders"), versus cached copies of online files ("synchronized"). It's not safe to regard your synchronized folders as permanent.
So, synchronized folders on an IMAP server are "mirrored" in Thunderbird so you do have a local (albeit temporary and transient) copy of messages; this is done mainly to avoid repeatedly downloading messages if you re-read them, and it makes searching faster an more efficient. But these "synchronized" message track what's being done on the server, and so if they are deleted anywhere, all synchronized devices will at some point also see the deleted messages vanishing. (Unless you made a local copy in the Local Folders account.)
I use a gmail account pretty much as you have described; I copy or move messages to that account so they are visible in my phone, my tablet, my own laptop and my works computer. It's free, and it's "in the cloud"; the only reservation I have is its privacy. There are other providers (e.g. 1&1/gmx) who don't seem to have the data collection fetish that google thrives on.
It's fairly simple to create filters in Thunderbird to automatically copy messages to your "cloud account"; even better is to set up forwarding rules on the other accounts' servers, so your messages are automatically sent on and waiting for you when you next login, already in the cloud account.

  • Trouble with install disks - is it OK to make a copy of them?

Finally, I am trying to make a copy of the install disks that came with my MBP. This was recommended in several threads for preserving the original and having backups just in case.
I used Disk Utility to make a disk image - choosing DVD/CD master, no encryption - as I was instructed on another thread. I made the disk images fine of the 2 disks - they are now saved as disk images in the .cdr format. While I was at it, I made a disk image of the TechTool Deluxe CD that came with my AppleCare.
When I inserted a CD (and then I tried a DVD) into the slot to Burn the disk image of the first (and then the second) install disk, I got the message that there is not enough room on the disk I am trying to use (for either disk). I had no trouble burning a disk of the TechTool Deluxe - I did that on a CD.
When I go to Get Info for the disk image for the 2 install disks, it looks like each is no larger than 5 plus GB, which seems strange.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Mrs H

When you make images of the discs, it is compressed. So when you get info of the image, that is smaller than the actual disc size. You said disc two was 3.97gb but really uncompressed it is likely over 6GB. For both install discs one and two, you need dual-layer DVDs to burn.
    Thanks for your help, mdpeterman.
I wondered about the compressed issue - but since I chose CD/DVD master, (from Disk Utility Help: "If you want to use the disk image with a third-party application, choose CD/DVD master. The disk image contains a copy of all sectors of the disk, whether they're used or not, and copies them to other CDs or DVDs bit for bit") with no encryption I assumed that the size of the disk image was identical to the original.
What you say tells me I'm wrong - that even with DVD master bit for bit, the image is compressed. Right?
I'll get back to you when I have solved this...
