On multiple catalogs

I've been using only one catalog for all my lightroom work, but now that i've passed de 30,000 pics on it, it became slow and unmanagable so i'm thinking about creating multiple catalogs
Is this the correct move?
how do i migrate some pics from my main catalog to a new one?
do i have to back-up each catalog individually or i can do it all together?
thanx for your help!
Ette

If you catalog is sluggish try optimising it. 30,000files is not a large catalog and shouldn't impact on speed. LR is best used as a single catalog unless you have a particular desire for multiply catalogs. They will need to be backed up individually. To migrate files with the LR changes intact you can select the files you require and export as a new catalog, then delete those files from the original catalog. It would be useful to set LR to write all changes to file before you do this. It is best not to have the same file in more than one catalog although perfectly possible,

  • Feature Request: merging multiple Catalogs

It is so nice to be able to search for specific images using the Filters on a BIG Catalog that includes ALL my images. But, when the Catalog gets big (i.e. 500,000+ images), it slows down my computer (Mac Pro 3.1 with 14 GB RAM and tons of spare storage) significantly.
For performance purpose, it is always better to use small Catalog (i.e. one Catalog for every year or every event). However, you are then limited to searching images belong to that small Catalog only.
If we can have an easy way to merge multiple Catalogs, it will make my life so much easier. We all will have more nad more images in our data base eventually.

Why can't you just use import from catalog? That merges two catalogs, doesn't it?

  • Online sharing with new/multiple catalogs

My PSE catalog recently became corrupted and since I have 35 GB of photos it was in any case not being very responsive.  To speed things up I reorganized my subdirectory structure and created multiple (smaller) catalogs.  I would now like to share some files online but my 2 GB online limit is already devoted to previous backup/synchronization from a now non-existant catalog (and lost albums).  I'm afraid that if I select syncing with what is currently in my library at photoshop.com things will get confused (with old albums from online being added to my new catalog or who knows what), but I am reluctant to delete the online albums (since that is now the only place they exist).  Actually, I started syncing today and a listing of all the albums online were immediately imported into PSE, but since those albums don't exist in any existing catalog on my PC, the photos in those albums are not visible offline.
I would love suggestions about how to proceed.  Should I delete the (online) albums now listed on my PC.  Do I have to start all over online?  Should I give up trying to share photos from multiple catalogs?
I now have 5 catalogs (all new) and would eventually like to share photos from all of them.  My impression is that the online feature was not designed to deal with any of my present circumstances (i.e., new catalogs, multiple catalogs, large photo collections).
I don't rely on the online backup feature by the way.  I back up my collection on an outboard hard drive.
It seems crazy to give up on photoshop.com as a way to share photos and use fliicker or Facebook instead, but that may be the easiest way to go.  Any help would be appreciated.

If you are running any firewall, try disabling that. Make sure all computer's are set to same workgroup. Also turn on built on firewall on vista, and xp. Turn defender off on vista. Then try to ping and check for replys.

  • Need help loading pics from multiple catalogs on Photoshop Elements 3

In the past, I've synched my photos from Photoshop Elements 3 to my video Ipod without a problem, but I only had one catalog in Elements. I created a new catalog and wanted to upload some of the pictures in the NEW catalog to my ipod. The trouble is, when I go into the photo preferences in my Ipod, it only shows the albums in the catalog I'm in. I want to load some pics from both catalogs. If I switch to the second catalog it erases everything it loaded previously from the first catalog. Does anyone know a way to upload from multiple catalogs on my Ipod? Is it possible to do?
    Thanks!

  • Multiple Catalogs with Photoshop Album Starter Edition 3.0?

Is it possible to work with multiple and independent catalogs in PSA SE?
I suppose all catalog information by default is stores in the file C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Album\Catalogs\My Catalog.psa (Windows XP Pro), and I can se that a renaming of this file is reflected in the program top-line.
It would be fine if I could start the PSA SE with a file path+name parameter identifying the actual catalog (xxxx.psa file) to open

The previous post answers my question about SE not having a multiple catalog feature. But I had been using PSA ver 1 which does have this feature. The SE came with a new computer. Is there any way I can incorparate the feature from ver 1 (which I paid for) into SE?

  • How do I use an album between multiple catalogs?

I don't keep multiple catalogs in the organizer because of the size of my catologs. So i keep them on a seperate hard drive & import them into the organizer.I want to create an album such as BIRDS-that I want to build between multiple catalogs. How do I make an album that will come up under albums wheneverI open the organizer so I can keep adding to it from multiple catalogs?

    Hi,
Its not possible to share an Album between multiple Catalogs.

  • Multiple Catalogs

I'm intrigued by some advice give on page 10 of the "Getting Started with Photoshop Elements 10" booklet in the boxed retail version (it's about the Organizer so just as relevant here).
    Adobe write:
    Create a catalog
As you import more files, it's a good idea to create more catalogs so that you don't lose the work you have done to organize the files. Large catalog files can also cause sluggish performance.
Does anyone here use multiple catalogs in a big way? What are the pros & cons of doing so? How many files do you use in each catalog?

    Neale

    Hi,
    Inside the handleSwithStore,
    1. Do any validations of the form input that is given by the user while choosing to switch stores.
    2. If you have are storing the store property as part of userprofile, update it with the new store info.
    3. You can either assign a catalog to a store or a set of stores to a catalog depending on your requirement.
    i)Assigning a catalog to a store:
Create a property in the store item-descriptor to store the catalog that is valid in this store. set the item-type as "catalog".
Thro Bcc, while creating a store, you can assign a catalog to it.
ii) Assigning a list of stores to a catalog:
Create a property in the catalog item descriptor to store a list of stores in which the catalog is applicable. set the data-type="list" and component-item-type="store".
Thro BCC, while creating a catalog, you can assign to a list of stores.
    4. In the postSwitchStore method, set the user's catalog to that of the new store that the user has selected.
Note: You may have the store item and catalog item in different repositories (say userprofile.xml and productcatalog.xml). To handle this, add the attribute repository="/atg/userprofiling/ProfileAdapterRepository" as and when necessary. Please refer to this link for linking between repositories - http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E35318_02/Platform.10-1-1/ATGRepositoryGuide/html/s0713linkingbetweenrepositories01.html.
    Hope this helps.

  • Multiple catalog in MM - ME21N

    Hi SDN,
i want to display multiple catalogs in me21n tcode.
at this time i can see only one catalog.
please let me know how can i get multiple catalogs.
Is there any User exit, Enhancement or BADI available for this?
Is this possible? i think there is similar way in SRM
    Regards,
    Rahul Wagh

    Hello Rahul,
if you want to use more then one catalog you should use SRM. That's the design
    BUT:
take a look into function MMPUROCI_CALL. there is a coding here for calling more than one catalog, but it is inactive.
An activation would be a modification w/o warranty...

  • Book from multiple catalogs

    Hello,
I want to create a book wich contains fotos from multiple catalogs. How can I do that?

Put all the applicable photos in one catalog, and then create your book.  If you've already edited the photos, you might need to consider writing the settings to xmp and using import/export catalogs to transfer the photos into the single catalogs.
But then I'd also question whether you actually need multiple catalogs?  Is there a particular reason you're using different catalogs?

  • Reason for multiple catalogs?

What would be the reasoning for having multiple catalogs? I mean, you have
collections you can set and if your pictures are in separate folders anyhow
as most people seem to do to some extent, then you already sort of have
different catalogs from different shots, right? Ideas and input on this
    please?

Also One way to separate Individual/Personal Work from Job work or so a client only see their stuff.
I'm sure there are even more reasons.

  • Multiple catalog support in ICSS

    Hello experts,
I've configured a product catalog in CRM & mapped the same indicator in XCM. The catalog is coming in product registration page.
Similarly I need to configure another catalog along with the previous one.
Whether ICSS framework supports multiple catalog configuration?
It would be grateful if you can throw your views on this.
    Thanks,
    Senthil.

    Hello,
I am afraid that the application is designed to only use one catalog, to achieve this functionality would you would need to complete some modifications ,

  • Removable disks and multiple catalogs

    HI,
I have a new system and I am wondering what my options are to get my images onto the system.
I have the disks from my old system that have about 300 GB of images each. These images are divided by years so that 2 years are on one drive and two years on another.
The new Vista system has a 640 GB drive for data, so I could copy the data from these disks onto the new drive. However, that would leave me with little disk space on the new drive.
I am wondering if I can place the two disks into removable housings and access them as external drives. If I do so I have some questions.
    1) Can I stick the images into one catalog that would include images from the 2 external drives and the new 640 GB drive? Are there issues if the external drives are not always present?
    2)Or should I create 3 catalogs?
If I so. do the catalogs reside on the external drives, or with Lightroom on an internal drive? I am also concerned about what happens if I disconnect the external drive and remount another drive. No doubt the drive letters would be reused, but the content would not match.
    Any suggestions?

As of Mountain Lion what I read says that TimeMachine can have multiple disks to back up to and will write backup data to whatever drives you add to your "pool".
This does not seem to work if any drive is smaller than the dataset you are backing up.  That is, apparently TimeMachine wants to put all the data from one machine in one place on one drive and if the drive it is looking at is too small it bails out with an error and tells you to reduce the data set size or get a bigger disk?

  • Multiple catalog backups

When I open LR, a dialog box pops up saying that I have requested catalog backups each time LR is run. As a result, when I go to the HD where I have the backup directory, it shows multiple LR catalogs in folders on the dates I opened up LR. Are these all the same? Can I throw out all previous folders, other than the most recent? One instructor I had said that I should only have one ".lrcat", not multiple ones. I am using LR 1.4.1 with Mac OS 10.4.11. Thanks.

Requesting a catalog backup every time Lr starts is likely excessive. It depends on how much activity you perform. Once a day or once a week might be fine for many.
However, whatever backup frequency you choose, you definitely want to keep several generations of backups. I also backup the "backups" to external drives.
For me any catalog backup older than 3 months can be deleted.
(And in this age of "information overload" the best instructor is often the one staring back at you when looking in the mirror.)

  • Collapsing Multiple Cataloges

New-er to LR. Recently upgraded to 2.0 and read Scott Kelby. Now I realized I have too many catalogues - can collapse into one organized into collection sets.
How do I collapse multiple catalogues into one - retaining the post processing, tagging and collections already defined?
    Suggestions?
    Cheers, drc

Pick one of them then use the "Import from Catalog" (File emnu) command to add the others to it.
