On my 3rd HD STB due to frozen screen

Hello,
I did a quick keyword search on "frozen", "freeze" and "lock up"...but did not find any answers here.
I am on my 3rd HD set top box.
The previous 2 were bad according to Fios phone support.
Issue: Within one to three months, when turning on the STB and TV...the picture is frozen or goes to a black screen.
Sometimes there is sound initially, usually there is none.
On Screen Menu works fine, as does the "guide".
Ran the self test from the Menu...under settings and help, I think...and all tests PASSED.
You can select a different channel and the guide indicates it changed the channel, yet you are still watching the same frozen or black picture.
You could leave it on or turn it all off and an hour later, same thing...although the guide is current.
Support: I am a working guy and thankful to have a job. I don't want to meet the Fios tech, if I don't have to...so I call support via phone in the evenings, when I get home.
Much time, troubleshooting, unplug/replug cables, reset stb from their end, send other "commands" to it...finally they arrange to ship a new box (which is nice of them...so I don't have to meet a tech).
I get it installed and am up and going...for a while (see issue above and repeat support steps above).
So it did it again (on my 3rd STB) yesterday (4/25/09).
(insert negative, frustrated thought here)
I then think, let's see what happens with Video On Demand.
Select a free movie and it is playing normally!
Watch a minute of subtitles and think ok, let's go back to live HD...and it works.
Only things I can add are:
1. that the built-in DVR is maybe 1/2 to 3/4 full and when the condition happens
2. I can NOT access/play anything from the DVR when the condition happens
3. I do have 2 HD STB's, both with DVR (ask me and I'll explain) and 1 regular STB
Any help or insight to this issue would be greatly appreciated!

Hello and thanks for the reply,
It seems longer than 6 weeks that I have been having this issue.
The STB with the issue is better ventilated than the one that does not have an issue.
It is not out in the open, but is in a bigger armoire.
It is 5 feet higher than the STB that does not have the issue.
We got 3 cats and the fur-balls (not meaning the cats) do not fly that high, nor clog the vents of the STB...I checked and it is all clean (area is NOT used as a cat hideout).
I was asked to swap the location of both HD DVR's and did (between downstairs and the bedroom).
I am inclined to think the issue is the location, since the issue did not travel with the STB.
Verizon tech's did the install and set it up via MoCA.
They pulled new coax and did all terminations.
The location with the issue, did not become an issue until I added a second HD DVR to the home.
It replaced a standard def STB that was in the downstairs location.
The reason for 2 HD DVR STB's is that I was told (by Verizon FiOS sales) I could not program new content to be recorded, except while sitting in front of the TV that is connected to the HD DVR (this "hub" was originally upstairs).
It is useless to me if I can access content to be played (stream it from the hub), but not program new content to be recorded ("push" it to the hub from any STB).
Our main TV room is downstairs and I was not going to walk up and back downstairs.
Thus the "stand-alone", additional HD DVR stb...which I am okay with.
Because:
1. the hard drive currently won't hold much HD content (sharing with the wife)
2. Verizon has not figured out how to have a GUI/DVR/Firmware that lets you play AND program content from the same DVR via the Menu ("push" it to the hub from any STB).
So what are good numbers (signal to noise, db loss, attenuation, etc)?
What line tests or comparisons between HD DVR stb's can I do?
Both locations check out good (in the green) when running:
Help
Self Diagnostics
from the Main Menu of each HD DVR stb
I have a standard def STB in the guest room that stays plugged in, but is seldom used.
Thanks again to you and others, perhaps I can get some more input or ideas from you or the forum/techs/Verizon customers?

My 3rd gen Ipod touch is frozen, my computer sees it as a digital camera. How do I retstore it?

    - Have you tried a reset to see if that will make iTunesee the iPod?
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Next try recovery mode. For that see:
iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore
    - Then DFU mode:

    - If somethng always shows on the screen, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an hour try the above again.

  • I have frozen screen on ipad mini

got frozen screen on ipad mini

How did this happen?  Was it due to misentry of a passcode, or something else.
If another cause than the passcode, do a reboot by holding both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears and it restarts, ignoring the red slider if that appears.

  • IMac 27" frozen screen

just can not identify in what situations, but when my Mac has a frozen screen, I have no other alternative but to push the off button. The most ironic thing is that, clearly the internet connection keeps. I know this because I'm usually listening to online radio. When it occurs, I can not change my dashboard and also can not switch to another application because I can not use the keyboard and the mouse click does not work.
I am currently using Mac OS X Yosemite, but the problem has persisted for several other versions of the system.
    I

I have exactly the same problem with a my 27" iMac of exactly the same vintage and configuration. It freezes this way anywhere between once a day and once a week.
I also see an additional variation of this crash, where when I wake up the machine from sleep, the backlight comes on, but no image is drawn. It glows gray. In the form of the crash that Helton reports, the cursor moves with the mouse, but nothing responds to clicks. I've also seen where streaming (and I believe locally stored iTunes) continue) to play. I am not sure whether the machine remains visible on the network.
I have never used any anti-virus on this machine. In a desperate attempt to isolate the problem I have done the following:
Fresh clean install of Mavericks onto a new, external Firewire 800 drive
After the install, I only re-installed the apps I use frequently: iTunes, Aperture, Chrome, Adobe Flash and Microsoft Remote Desktop, HP printer driver, TextWrangler. That's it.
Replaced 3rd-party memory I had installed with the original factory installed 2x 2GB DIMMs
Blown out the bottom vents and the circular vent in back with canned air
Unplugged the external DVI monitor I was using
Done the usual setting resets via the startup
Ran the built-in memory checker at startup
Ran checks on the harddrives for errors, permission problems, etc...
Wiped the internal drive clean, and did a fresh install on that
    The crashes still occur.
The system does not appear to be hotter than normal. I used to have a widget that monitors temps (but doesn't change fan speeds).
This system has the Seagate 1TB harddrive that was eligible for a recall, but I didn't do it. The drive has never reported any SMART errors.
Since you are still seeing crashes after updating to Yosemite, I'm not sure what to try next, myself. I've considered pulling it apart to make sure there is no dust in the fans. It doesn't seem to be overheating, but despite the sensors, there doesn't seem to be a way to record a regular temperature history to see what the temps were like at the moment of the freeze.
Of course, it's out of warranty. It's five years old, but it's plenty fast enough for me. The screen is still gorgeous. If it weren't for this, I'd use it for at least another two years. I was thinking of getting a MacMini to plug into it and use the iMac as a screen, but the new MacMinis are dual-core. It wouldn't be a nice leap in performance.

  • Frozen screen, no boton, no assistive touch :(

My iphone isn't working, my screen is frozen since this morning. I have tried to turn it off but due to my shut down boton been broken I've been depending on the Assitive Touch but now with a frozen screen I'm helpless, what can I do?

To "reset" the N-B Fan Lights, Just unplug the PC power cord from the Powersupply, or the wall, And leave out for 5 Minutes, then plug back in, as Far as Upgrading your PSU, I would Recomend Either the Enermax 465 Watt PSU or the Antec 480 True Power PSU as they are Both Very Good Powersupplies , I would Lean towards the Enermax 465, as they now come equiped with  Dual +12 Volt Rails, and this is a Great Option!....Oh and as Far as your Problem with your "Frozen Screen", this could be as a result of a Weak PSU, or that you do not have enough Voltage set for your RAM, Go into the BIOS an up thr DRAM (VDIMM) Voltage to 2.65 or 2.7 Volts ..........Sean REILLY875

  • Solution for frozen screen?

My iPod touch is frozen. I have turned it off six times, each time resulting in the same frozen screen. I have reset my iPod only to have the screen still unresponsive. Double tapping the home button still moves the screen. The touch action for my iPod is not responding. I tried to restore the iPod a few times, each time just resulting in the same way. I allowed my iPod to die on it's own, only to have it be fully charged and still unresponsive.
Is there someone out there that can help? Or should I contact a specialist? Due to my location Apple stores are not common and if they are, they do not speak English.

Try what you have not yet tried:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • 1st gen ipod nano with a frozen screen no longer recognized by computer

I have an ipod nano (1st gen) with a frozen screen that is no longer recognized by any computer.  I had just barely downloaded a new audio book onto it before ejecting from itunes and trying to play it when it froze.  Since then I have tried updating my itunes,  plugging it into a second computer, and turning it off by holding the pause button, but nothing seems to work.  Suggestions? Or, has it just reached the end of its lifespan?

    Hi caitt,
I don't know if "what Apple said to do" means that you tried the 5 R's, but that's a good start:
    The 5 R's
    From there, try this:
iPod missing in "My Computer" or in iTunes on Windows
    And this...
    iPod won't turn on
    Good luck,

  • Problem with my iPod touch: Frozen screen, unable to access anything as slider does not work, will not accept a full restore.  Apple Store advised that it is a 'hardware' problem and I could trade-in!

I am a relatively 'new' user.  Touch was a gift, I used it in a simplistic way - listened to music took a few photos, added a few calendar events.  After a year I then decided to be more proactive and found a few free apps (Solitaire) - then had a the frozen screen problem which I though was connected to low battery, but it wasn't.  I recharged it, still could not access, then tried a full restore and got an error message.  Took it to a Genius Bar and was told it was a hardware problem and as it is out of warranty  I could trade in or just buy a different product.  As this is my first Apple product is this usual?  Do Apple products have a very short shelf life - I anticipated that it would last me longer than a year!  Has anyone else had this problem?  Was it able to be resolved? Or is it worth trying to get it repaired - and if so who can do it - Apple  Store did not offer that to me as an option?

Sure sounds like a hardware problem. It happens some times. The iPod is just an electrical device.
Apple will exchange it for a refurbished one for this price. Apple does not repair your iPod.

Let the battery fully darain. After charging for an least an hour try a reset and restore. Use Recovery mode if necessary.
If not successful, then time for an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • MacBook Pro Hard Disk Crashed after Frozen Screen

    Hi
Very unpleasant experience with my first MacBook.  My MacBook Pro Book 13'' (late 2010 model) screen froze on start up.  Realised that the battery was low and plugged the power adapter in, and let the frozen screen continue hoping for it to start in a while, only to realise that the entire laptop heated up significantly.  I switchd the laptop off and let it simply recharge.
No luck on restarting after laptop was fully charged despite several attempts and following all instructions on Apple website, including SMC reset.  I took the laptop down to the store and the Genius Bar team informed me that the hard disk had corrupted and they could not retrieve any data.
Wondering if this is a common problem, as I have never had a hard disk failure before and specially surprising as it is relatively new laptop (<1 year) old ? Seems like a technical fault with the laptop prima facie.  Some data was not backed up recently, and now I need to look for a recovery specialist, with costs to bear despite Apple Care.
Any suggestions on recovery specialists in London who do not charge a fortune ?
    Thank a Lot !

HHola I update my Apple TV and I am frozen screen with the photo of Apple TV and iTunes symbol and a cable connected from one to another device, it happens and how to fix it Apple TV

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.
(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device)
