On my macbook what should i change to from igoogle?

I have a MacBook - I am 87 years old but computer literate.  I need to know what I should change to after having been on igoogle which is shutting down.
I would like something close to what igoogle offers.
Can you advise me?

...which is a real shame. I 'married' Kindle very early on, so that's my format of choice. I like being able to read on my e-reader or computer. I find it very odd that Apple hasn't come up with a Mac reader for its eBook format.

Hello, Edward and thank you for your note.
I read through the thread you mentioned and it seems that people are having a lot of problems with the iCloud clients, so we're not alone, but the unique issue in my case is the failing email address vs. the working perfectly email address.
After reading your message tonight, I tried my setup again with the preferred Apple ID (the one without the "." between the names), and for the first time ever, IT WORKS. Mail app configured the servers both send and receive as p01-smtp.mail.me.com and p01-imap.mail.me.com. For the first time, I'm able to send and receive into the Mail app, create mailboxes, move messages into and out of mailboxes, keep Sent messages, etc.
I had a 50-minute support chat with MobileMe support via ExpressLane on Monday afternoon. They couldn't resolve my issue but passed me on to escalation. I was told to expect to get an email from advanced support by this afternoon, but none has arrived. However, so far tonight -- and I will check again tomorrow several times before declaring victory -- it looks like something has been fixed on the Apple end to make things work.
I will report back after I do some additional testing tomorrow to make sure the fix is real and is solid...and before I let my friend, the new Mac user, know the good news.
    Regards,
    Mike

Does the connecter seem to be making good contact?  Is yours a model with a replaceable batttery or not?
Might have to visit an Apple Retail store genius bar, or authorized repair and have them check out the battery to see if it has failed.

computer was struck by lightning.  what should I change?

    Hi tsysteph?
Fist of all I would recomend you to buy a surge protector to plug in your expensive appliances is such as TV's and computer. How much damage did your computer sustain? I would open up HP Support Assiant and run systems checks on every thing. Then go from there in repairing it. Surge protectors aborbs excess electricty and prevents it from intering what ever is plug into it. Most sure protectors have a warranty that covers appliances that are plug into it if it should fail. Mine have up to $50,000.00 coverage for damages caused by it failing.

  • Upgraded to Mac Pro- What should I change in FCP to use all 8 cores?

    Hi
I went from a G5 to a new Mac Pro. What settings should I change to make sure I can take advantage of the speed from the 8 cores and 6 gigs of Ram and new Nvidia graphics card?
    Thanks

There's little to do on that front. FCP will use what it can all by itself. Might look into a virtual cluster though for Compressor. Use the QMaster control panel to set this up... read on it here: http://www.macworld.com/article/49047/2006/01/marcchreateside.html

  • Lion will not load on my macbook. what should i do?

Lion will not load on my mac book. what should i do?

I'm having the same problem - I'm getting an error message of "502 - bad gateway".
However, I successfully downloaded another application from the App Store and my internet is working fine with everything else.

  • What should I change to make it work?

I export a Quicktime movie (720X480 Animation) out of FCP 6.o.3 on my Macbook (Leopard).
    I bring it into FCP 6.0 on a Powermac G5 with BlackMagic Intensity (720 x 486) (Tiger).
1st Try, Sequence: Match clip settings. Dropped Frames
2nd Try, Sequence: Native settings. Render. Dropped Frames
3rd Try, Sequence: Clip captured from Intensity Card. Native Settings. Then drag Quicktime into that sequence, render, no dropped frames,
    except for this:
Sometimes things hang. The movie plays great out of quicktime, but in the sequence occasionally one frame will stretch into 7 or 8, then play smooth, then hang again.
Any ideas? Do I need to revert to FCP 6.0? Is it an issue with the 720x486 vs. 720 vs. 480? Should I use a different codec?

The Animation codec is a HEAVY codec...meaning that it isn't designed to be played back in real time. It is just a good lossless codec to send back and forth. You CAN play it back, but you need a pretty serious RAID ARRAY to do that.
And depending on the codecs you are using, you might also need a RAID to handle them. Not many can be played back on firewire drives, or one internal SATA drive.
2nd Try, Sequence: Native settings. Render. Dropped Frames
What are these "native settings?" What specifically are they?

      995 MB Page-outs

I agree with what Kappy and my ginger have said…the Page-In and Page-Out numbers are large enough to cause the problems described in the last paragraph of Etresoft's About EtreCheck page:
    Virtual Memory Information:
Similar to the above. Again, this information is most useful if you haven’t restarted recently. It is important not to make any assumptions about this data. A low level of free RAM is not necessarily a problem. The operating system tries to make the best use out of the memory you have given it. Unused RAM is wasted RAM. The most important section here is Page-outs. If your machine is consistently making gigabytes of Page-outs you probably don’t have enough RAM for the software you are using.
But you're probably in luck, depending upon how much [time and money] you want to put into your machine. Etresoft's results show you have one 1 GB DDR3 1067 MHz memory module in each of the two available slots (BANK 0 and BANK 1) totaling just 2 GB RAM. The simplest, quickest and least expensive path to speed up a pokey MacBook is by adding as much additional RAM as it will take—in your case, $200 will buy you an eightfold increase in memory and a gratifying increase in performance.
Other World Computing has a list of DDR3 memory upgrade options for your MacBook7,1—different combinations of these modules will support 4 GB ($50), 6 GB ($78), 8 GB ($95-$100) and now up to 16.0 GB of RAM (one 8 GB DIMM in each slot) for $195. Be sure to check the Boot ROM Version in your System Profiler and, if necessary, download the latest EFI version from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237.
While you're at it, you may want to consider upgrading your OS from Mavericks 10.9.4 to Yosemite 10.10.2—released only yesterday—which appears to have fixed the wiggy behavior of WiFi, Bluetooth and certain other issues which dogged earlier Yosemite releases. The same page on OWC also lists a variety 2.5" SATA hard drives, SSD drives and SATA/SSD hybrids for your MacBook. Brand names—Western Digital, Toshiba, Seagate, Samsung—and off-brand are fully guaranteed and not difficult to install.
The price of SSDs is dropping (e.g. Samsung 512 GB, $500) below $1/GB and part of the attraction is a transfer rate roughly equal to that of computer RAM…well beyond that which hard disk drives can achieve. This means that VRAM (Virtual RAM) can be instantly created on the SSD if the conventional RAM should ever be inadequate preventing performance from becoming a casualty of electromechanical limitations.

  • Very noisy Macbook--what should I do?

I bought my MacBook (2.2 GHz, 1GB RAM) in mid-december 2007, so it's still under warranty.
It was all nice and silent at first, but over the last few days, it has gotten really noisy, and it isn't that sound like a jet engine which I know is just the fan working a little faster and nothing to worry about. This one is a sort of steady buzzing sound, which doesn't seem to be related to how much or how little I'm making it do--not hugely loud, but definitely noticeable, enough to get distracting. Sometimes it can be quieter, but it's completely random. It's a bit like the buzz that comes from those fluorescent lights in schools and stores and such.
I have tried taking it to both the Apple reseller/apple service center I got it from (where I live you can't get apple stuff directly from the Apple representative, you have to visit a reseller, so I used the one the apple rep recommended), and to the 'Apple demo Center' which is basically the nearest you get here to the Apple Stores in the US and elsewhere: they show you the stuff and help with troubleshooting, but don't sell or repair.
Embarrassingly enough, the MacBook behaved on both occasions, with the buzz being super-low to non-existent, so even though I could describe the noise, they couldn't hear it so they told me its likely nothing to worry about. but I'm still worried, because it is still doing this. So now I don't know what I should do: should I make an appointment with the repair people and have them check it over, bearing in mind I will probably not be able to speak to them directly, but will have to leave a description of the problem, which will be taken down by the person at the reception and then transmitted to the repair guy, thus increasing the possibility for overall confusion, should I go there and insist on showing the repair guy myself so I at least know he heard what I had to say (sorta cut out the middleman), should I go back to the Apple Demo Center which is at least somewhat easier to get to and ask them to look at it more carefully? Should I just put up and shut up?
Any input from experienced Mac folks out there would be great. at this stage, all I can think of is the time not four months ago when I had to go through all these dilemmas and decisions regarding my Windows laptop, when I was made to go back and forth to the repair place mainly because the customers weren't allowed to interact with the lab folks, and the receptionists kept missing stuff. That experience was one of the main things that made me take the plunge and get a Mac this time, and I gotta admit I am rather near despair at the mere thought of having to go through this again *rueful smile*.
And yes, if you think I am trying to get you to feel sorry for me...I am But I am feeling pretty low--I was just getting comfortable enough on this machine to start doing interesting things on it, and now this!

Does this occur when you plug your computer to the MagSafe? If so, it's a known thing, the MagSafe makes a buzz noise.

  • Soda spilled on my macbook: What should I do

I just got my macbook a few months ago. But like two weeks ago I was drinking a soda and someone knocked it onto my keyboard.
The keys are now sticky, I tried cleaning under them but it didn't work well. My problem is I don't know what else it affected. should I take it to bestbuy where I bought it or right to an apple store

    Hi...
Well when my Macbook broke Apple replaced the Logic board or some other part.
That made it very difficult for me to access any of my backups or to even backup again!
I brought it back - the said they wouldn't do anything... I turned around with a red face full of rage saying to the guy.." if you expect me to go home with a computer you people stuffed up even more, think again... if you tell me to leave because you cant do anything... you'll be hearing from my lawyer... If i were you i'd fix this now...." i got a piece of paper wrote my details on there put the computer down and walked right out. 2 days later i got a phone call telling me, my computer was ready and that i was able to access my previous backup and backup on top of that backup.. if that makes any sense...
The main thing is - if you think it was OK before you brought it in for repair you tell them (quite firmly) that you want that computer back fixed... b rude if you have to because you can get some arrogant people at those centers!
Please don't think I'm arrogant or rude but if yo were me and if you had to bring in your Macbook in for repair 4 time before you'd have done something similar to what i did...
Now apple have replaced my macbook because i had tooooo many problems.. so i now have a macbook pro.. which is a computer i am very very happy with! =]

  • As of Firefox 21,pressing Ctrl+F slides in the find bar into view. What should I change in about:config to revert it back and make it popup instantaneously?

The question pretty much sums up what I want to ask. Thank you very much for any and all help.
I know this is not the place to rant but I think this needs to be said - Why do you(firefox devs) guys keep on changing things that were perfectly fine in the first place? For example, making the find bar slide in and out of view may "look cool" but it consumes more system resources(albeit very very little) than making it appear instantaneously(the way it was previously).

  • New macbook, what should I do?

My new macbook will arrive in the next few days. I currently use a G4 powerbook. My question is should I use the option to pull my data across on first boot or should I start a fresh and just copy my files across using my external drive?
    Which is the better option?
    Cheers

I bought a new MacBook about a month ago and based on advice here, I did a fresh erase and install from the disks that came with the MacBook (this way I was able to leave out the Office Demo and iWork Trial Demo and languages and print drivers I don't need) and then I transfered whatever files I needed with my external firewire harddrive and did not bother with the Migration Assistant. And when possible, I did a new install of my non-Apple apps and simply transfered over my preferences for those apps. Was that all necessary, I am not sure but it made me feel like a clean fresh MacBook without all the extra baggage I don't need.
