On my settings there is no software update

On my settings there is no software update

Update it from iTunes on a computer as described at the bottom of this article; devices running an iOS version prior to 5.0 can't be updated straight from the device. It will be updated to the newest iOS release supported by the device’s hardware.
If you don't get the option to update an iPad 2 to iOS 7, try again when Apple's servers aren't as busy.

The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

  • HT4623 My iPad does not have the automatic software update and I do not know how to download IOS if under settings there is no software update button available. Do I have to reset my iPad and lose data?

My iPad does not have the automatic software update and I do not know how to get IOS 6 onto it. When I go into settings there is no software update button.

If you are really on iOS 5 then look in Settings > General > Software update.
    Otherwise:
If you are using iOS 4 (or earlier) there is no Software Update in Settings. That feature was first added in iOS 5.
To update you will have to connect your iPad to iTunes on a computer (preferably the one you sync with and backup to).

  • HT4972 I have an iphone 4s and it's telling me that there is a software update available to iOS 6.  When I got to "settings" on my phone, the "download and install" tab is not highlited and I can't click on it to get the update.

I have an iphone 4s.  I have an alert that there is a software update available to iOS 6.  When I got to the settings tab, the "download and install" button is not highlited and I can't click on it.  Below that, it says that this update requires a Wi-Fi network connection to download.  So I connected my phone to my computer and tried to update throug itunes.  When I clicked the update tab on itunes on my laptop, an alert pops up that says I need to be connected to the internet for th update to take place.  I am confused because I am connected to the internet, but for some reason the connection is not being recognized when I try to update.
I am using a Gateway laptop and my internet connection is a verizon 4g device that I plug into a USB port.  I feel like this should be so simple but have not been able to figure it out even when I called Apple and spoke to a rep...help!

In order to download to your phone over the air, you need to be connected to WiFi.
It's possible the Internet connection through Verizon is not stable enough for the downlaod to begin (it is a very large download).
You might want to head over to Starbucks with your laptop for the afternoon and see if you can download it over their WiFi.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.

  • HT5567 I'm not sure how to download ios6 on my ipad 2.  There is no software update under my general settings.

How can one download the ios 6 onto the ipad 2 when there is no software updates under general settings?  Do I need to reset network settings?

You'll need to connect your iPad to a Computer running iTuines (Can be a Mac or a Pc doesn't matter) and follow the update prompts.
You'll probably want to back up the iPad before updating though.

  • I am trying to update my Ipad - there is no 'software update' in the settings? settings?

I have been unable to update my Ipad to IOS 6.1 since there is no 'software update' in 'settings'??
Secondly, now my Ipad is not connecting to WiFi and every time it asks for password to my 'apple id'
I put in the correct password and nothing happens. Please help!

The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, if you have iOS 4 then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
To update via a computer, connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases on iTunes 11). You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand sidebar of iTunes and selecting 'Backup' (on iTunes 11 you can enable the left-hand sidebar via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC)
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand sidebar, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button

  • HT4623 There is no "Software Update" visible between "About" and "Usage" in General Settings, as shown in the example. And I can't find it anywhere else, either, so I am stymied at the first step of trying to update. Ideas?

I am stymied at the first step of trying to update my IPad software, as there is no "Software Update" choice visible in General Settings. And I can't find it anywhere else, either. Ideas?

Settings>General>Software Update is only available on iPad with IOS 5 and above.
If you are using IOS 4, you need to connect to iTune (computer) to update software.

  • I can't update my iPad iOS from version 4.3, there is no software update menu in the settings panel

I can't seem to find a way to update the iOS version on my iPad.  It is at version 4.3.3.  There is no software update menu option on the settings screen.  The apple download page does not let me update it from there either.

You do not have iOS 5 on your iPad and so you don't have Software Update in the Settings. You have to update by using a computer via the latest version of iTunes. You can connect the iPad to your computer and launch iTunes. Select the iPad on the left side under the devices heading. Click on the Summary Tab on the right. Click on Check for Update.
After you update to iOS 5 or later, you will have Software Update in you settings and can update via WiFi OTA. But .... If you are using the original iPad you can only update to iOS 5.1.1.
