On my Time Capsule what is OSStatus error -6602

Trying to do a back up update and I received the error-
OSStatus error -6602
I can't find it in the support group community.
What does it mean and how can I fix it.
My time capsule won't let me back up anymore... :-(

  • Time Capsule / Leopard 10.5.8 / Time Machine / Disk can't be opened because the original item can't be found / OSStatus error -6602

    Hi,
I'm facing a big issue with Time Machine on my Mac Book running Leopard 10.5.8 (build 9L31a) and my Time Capsule (firmware 7.6.1 (76100.4)).
I have searched a lot (during 3 days !!) to find a solution but no luck !
I have the same syntoms as described by LUNY in this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/message/9364556#9364556
    To quickly summarize:
My MacBook was configured to use my Time Capsule as backup disk. Everything went fine during 2 years and then one day I suddently got problems with time machine !
Time Machine was unable to access my Time Capsule. Moreover it was drastically slowing down my MacBook !
    So:
    1. I stopped Time Machine and tried to change the backup disk: every time I chose my Time Capsule Disk, I got a OSStatus error -6602
    2. Then, I tried to access my Time Capsule from the Finder -> slow and then got this message 'Disk can't be opened because the original item can't be found'
    3. I searched in the logs for the specific reason and I found:
       - system.log (/var/log) :
          myMacBook kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O error.
myMacBook /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder[198]: NetworkNode::handleMountCallBack returned -6602 (the same error)
myMacBook ReportCrash[358]: Saved crashreport to /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/kextload_2012-12-30-112946_myMacBook.crash using uid: 0 gid: 0, euid: 0 egid: 0
       - In CrashReporter (/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/): i see the problem coming from kextload with this exception:
           Exception Type:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)
           Exception Codes: 0x000000000000000a, 0x000000000122d000
    4. I tried to mount the time capsule disk with Terminal (AFP protocol):
       > mount -t afp afp://admin:[email protected]/Data /Volumes/termAFPData/
result -> mount_afp: AFPMountURL returned error 19, errno is 19
These errors (6602 and 19) are neither documented anywhere nor associated to a clear description of the problem. The only thing I have found is that errno 19 is an IO error -> http://www.opensource.apple.com/source/CarbonHeaders/CarbonHeaders-18.1/MacError s.h
On the other hand, and this is the really weird part of the issue, my time capsule disk works well when I mount it with SMB protocol !!! (Or when I access it with a Windows XP machine).
So, the workaround is: mount -t smbfs //admin:[email protected]/Data /Volumes/termSMBData/
Or, in Finder -> Connect to server and there use the URL: smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/Data
Not sure what is going on ... but I pretty sure that's a bug and not a hardware problem.
Is there someone who has already found a solution for this kind of behaviour ?
It would avoid me a lot of headaches and improve the support for this kind of problem.
    Thanks !!!

Thanks a lot for this really quick reply.
When you say: "I would though go back to 7.5.2 firmware." Do you mean a reset to factory default ?
    Greetz
NO, your time capsule is running 7.6.1 but it is built with AFP following increased security for LION.. that is not required or available in Leopard.. so there is no point.. it is also not as stable on the older hardware.. at least in my experience.. I have repaired about 200 of the suckers so I do see a few.
When you select firmware update in the airport utility.. hold the option key.. all valid firmware versions for your TC then show up.. not only upgrades.. select 7.5.2 and upgrade to that.
Do a factory reset when you do it is a good idea though.. start off again.
And do reset of TM.. A4 in pondini.
    See if it helps.
Oh, the TC will continually complain about needing a firmware update.. turn off automatic checking of updates.. it will still annoy you for fun every few weeks but that is better than daily.

  • Time Capsule (OSStatus error -6602.) Cannot choose backup disk

I have no idea what to do next. The wireless connection on my 500 GB Time Capsule works fine. However, a few days ago, I noticed that it was no longer backing up. I tried the usual things (resetting Time Capsule, unplugging Time Capsule, changing my disk name) and even did a full erase. Every single time I try to turn on my Time Machine and select the backup disk, it gives me this error when I enter my password:
    Operation could not be completed
    (OSStatus error -6602.)
I know I am entering the correct password. I tried to run disk utility but even though I can see my Time Capsule, I cannot verify it. Any thoughts?

I've had this problem since August. Every once in a while I do searches and try different things, but so far nothing has worked. Would love to find the answer to this. I can no longer backup anything even though I've reset the capsule and even wiped out my data and tried to start from scratch.
I finally sprung the $9.99/month for drop box just to have backups. It's ridiculous.
This is about the 5th time I've had issues with the time capsule and had to wipe out my backups.

How do I decode the error messages?

The information from a Google search indicates the error is generated when connecting to a PC share. So this may be some kind of error generated by the NAS' operating system. In any event I cannot find such an error number associated with OS X so if it is an OS X error number then it's not publicly documented. I would still think Synology's tech support should be able to help you since it is their device. If they sent you here then they're passing the buck.

  • Error OSStatus error -6602 on Time Machine

Hello, i've been trying to setup my TM but im getting the error 'OSStatus error -6602'
I have mounted my external drive (FAT32) and everytime that i select it from the Time Machine list of drives it prompts me for a username/password. I enter the same user/password that was used when mounting the drive (that is the same used on the smb admin) and i get the above error. Any ideas what this means? thank you in advanced.

Thank you very much for your quick reply. It is a network drive, and i just switched to mac so apologies if my terminology is not very accurate. I read on some forums that it was possible to use FAT32 on TM. And in order to see that drive it was necessary to set this line on the terminal.
    defaults write com.apple.systemspreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
which i did. More strangely it worked for 2 weeks, i was able to backup and see my backups for 2 weeks and then it just failed to backup and now im getting the error mentioned above.
What i refer to 'mount' is connect to server smb://drive which then prompts me for a password and then it appears on the finder. That is the same user/passwd that im using when selecting the drive on the TM.
So am i doing something wrong in here? and if i can only use HFS+ why it worked for some time? again thank you very much for your help.

    Hello,
Have you looked through Pondini's extensive TM help site?

I can't imagine anything TMwise not covered.
But is this a NAS vor Network drive?

I think illegal characters in the Drive's name can do it also.

I have a Macbook Air and a 1TB WD My Worldbook and have been unable to setup time machine for backups, I keep receiving the following error - Operation could not be completed. (OSStatus error -6602.) It is connected to my airport extreme - dual band any thoughts on what I need to do to get this to work. I had to uninstall itunes 10 and downgrade to 9.2.1 so I can see my shared folder and what saved me was that I manually copied my itunes library to the network drive.
I am new to Macs and know tech basics so please be gentle.
    Thanks for any insight.

I had the same problem. WD does indeed support Time Machine set up on the WD World.
The acrobat file walking you through the 15 second set up [hurrah] can be found here: http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/?family=mbworld [click on the user guide link to download].
My problem was that I was trying to login using my user name rather than the wd_backup that is required via Time Machine.... did not read the set up instructions very carefully.

  • When doing a restore with Time Capsule, I get -8003 error; restoring nothing

    Hi,
When doing a full restore with Time Capsule, I get -8003 error; restoring nothing. This happens with all recent backups. Also after doing a verify/repair of the TimeCapsule disk.
This is a dissaster for my originals (my Ableton Live projects). I am very dissapointed in TC and TM at this moment, because I trusted my backup system in combination with my MBP fully.
    Please help?
    Best regards, Tom

    Hi Pondini,
Sorry for the late response, but the problem was something else and were two separate ones.
Somewhere along the way the TC backup couldn't find backup to the original TC volume, that's why I let TM backup towards my user volume named 'Tom'.
When I wanted to restore the root of my drive when selecting the diskname and 'Restore' in any point in time, this resulted in error -8003 in the activated TimeMachine.
Then I tried to do it via the recovery OS and even via the original OSX DVD. Both not enabling me to select the TC volume named 'Tom'. Then I remembered that I first backed-up onto the original 'TimeCapsule' volume/partition. When I copied the sparsefile to the 'TimeCapsule' partition, I was able to recover the entire disk using the recovery OS.
All my files are backup and I am a happy Mac user once again :-)
    Thanks & Regards, Tom

Try the advice in this thread.
If that doesn't help, try a Web search for "OSStatus error 6602" (without the quotes).  Do NOT put a hyphen before 6602.  What would cause anything with 6602 in it to be excluded.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
That's some sort of network configuration problem.

  • Remote backup to Free Agent Drive: OSStatus error -6602 ??

Reposted with minor edits from the Leopard section...
We are trying to back up our desktop Macs to a Seagate Free Agent disk locally attached to a Mac Pro running Mac OS X Server v.10.5.5. The desktop nodes are all iMacs running 10.5.6. When we try to set up Time Machine to use the remote disk, we get an error "Operation could not be completed. OSStatus error -6602"
We get the same error on 3 different nodes whether the disk is shared or NFS mounted. It is not that the Free Agent drive is in power saving shutdown as we have seen this error whilst Time Machine running locally on the Mac Pro was backing up to it. That backup, BTW, was successful.
At this point I wonder if this is some incompatibility with the Seagate firmware. Has anyone else encountered this problem? A quick Google search on the error code turns up scant information -- perhaps something to do with permissions, the details of which I'm not too familiar on Macs.

I may have found a solution... if I connect to the server from the remote machine I see the backup volume with a -1 appended to its name. If I first open that volume from the Finder and then try to set up TM, I can select the Backups-1 volume, authenticate as myself, and TM will back up to that volume. I'm not sure yet whether the connection has to be kept open somehow for unattended backups to work.

  • What does "OSStatus error -36" mean in Time Machine?

I'm getting intermittent errors with Time Machine. It will not back up to my external HD (LaCie d2 quadra). When this happens, the external HD cannot even by ejected (by Finder or Disk Utility). I have to turn it off. When I turn it back on and run Disk Utility Repair Disk it always says that the LaCie appears OK.
    I don't know what's going on, but I'm suspecting it's the HD.
    Any help?
    The log says:
    Dec 19 12:04:56 Roy-PowerBook com.apple.backupd[31851]: Starting standard backup

Thank you. I'd already been to Pondini's TM FAQs and had suspected that the problem was corrupted files or bad media. Only DriveGenius DrivePulse has ever given me any error messages about that LaCie, and it said only that the drive had errors and needed repair ASAP. Disk Utility of course found nothing to repair. A tech at ProSoft suggested corrupted files, saying bad TM files often cannot be detected by normal means and that then the only solution is as you said: backup, reformat, and restore the LaCie.
Unfortunately, the Backups.backupdb file is about 1.5 TB and I didn't have another drive that big to back up to. Now I do, so following the directions in "Time Machine: How to transfer backups from the current backup drive to a new backup drive" I backed up the backup to a new OWC drive. (The copying took about 20 hours.)
I certainly can't trust the LaCie until I can ascertain whether the errors were caused by corrupt files or bad media. At this point, I have little idea how to do that. After the holidays, I'll look into it.

  • When setting up my Time Capsule I get an error message that another device is using my computer's IP address.  What can I do about this?

When I am setting up my new Time Capsule I get a pop up window that says another device is using my IP address and I have to change it.  My time capsule will not work or connect to the Internet.  I assume that is why.  Everything is plugged in as should be.  I also have a wireless DVD player and my DISH network plugged in to the Ethernet of the Time Capsule.

You need to do the setup of the TC before you plug it into the network.. you obviously already have a router, so set the TC up as bridge device.. in airport utility/internet tab/connection sharing.. off bridge mode.. then you can plug it into the network and whatever is main router will do its job properly.
If this is not the case, then you have a static IP setup somewhere.. or another dhcp server.. track down and remove it.

  • Time Capsule WDS trial and error--working now

    *{ I }*
I consider myself an expert in using Mac computers and Mac wireless systems although I am no hacker and no programmer by any stretch of the imagination (although I did teach myself how to use HyperStacks way back in 1990!). Although Apple overall provides a relative ease of use for computer technology, setting up a WDS network under b or g mode is still not always perfect. In this post, I relay my experiences of using a new Time Capsule to join an existing WDS network in 802.11g mode. It took several trials and errors and there might still be some glitches but for now it seems to be working.
note: you might want to skip to the last section roman numeral five if you want to skip the "travels with Conal and his Time Capsule" and see what my most helpful hint is.
    *{ II }*
WDS stands for Wireless Distribution System which is when you use wireless routers to extend the range of your networks using a wireless method rather than linking each router by long cables. In the ideal situation, you would link the routers by cables but in a home situation one may not be able to have unsightly cables hanging everywhere.
My previous WDS system looked something like this:
    DSL Modem == Extreme ~~ Express1 ~~ Express2 ## laptop
    Key
== represents wired connection between routers
~~ represents wireless connection between routers
    ## represents wireless connection to a wireless device that is not a router (eg., laptop)
Extreme = Airport Extreme, the previous generation that looked like a saucer (or humourously I have heard called a "boob-style" station.
Express1 and Express2 = Airport Express, the previous generation that only could broadcast in b or g
My laptop usually connects to the network from Express2 because that has the strongest signal in my room.
    *{ III }*
When I received my Time Capsule, I wanted to replace the existing Express2 and make Express2 simply become a wifi client (not a router) so that I can still use it for AirTunes and not to have it broadcast router signals. The reason for this is because Express2 and Time Capsule reside in the same room and aside from the redundancy of network signals, I don't know if having two wireless routers in such close proximity to each other would cause havoc on my network performance. I wanted the network to look like this schematic:
    Extreme ~~ Express1 ~~ Time Capsule
I unplugged Express 2 and took it to the same location as Express 1 and Extreme 1. Then I plugged in Time Capsule. The idea of putting them in close proximity for set up was so that they could properly configure each other.
I opened up Airport Utility and it saw all four of my routers. I went through the wizard for Time Capsule selecting the option for it to replace an existing router. When all configurations were automatically set Time Capsule rebooted and in about two minutes or less, Airport Utility tells me there was an error configuring the Time Capsule. I knew immediately then that I had a few long hours ahead of me.
After that first failure I tried these various ways:
    1. retried the wizard automatic way (never worked for my setup which albeit is not the simplest of network setups is neither the most complicated)
    2. performed a manual configuration whereby I added the Time Capsule Airport ID to Express1 making Time Capsule a remote router of Express1; then I manually added Express1 to TimeCapsule as a router that it should connect to (that didn't work for some reason)
    3. finally I got out the ethernet cable, hard reset Time Capsule, plugged in ethernet cable from laptop to TimeCapsule, and the manually added the Airport ID to Express1 and vice versa.
Note that I went through trial #2 several times fiddling around with other various WDS configuration etc. Finally what really worked for me was #3. I find that despite that I should be able to configure a new router wirelessly, I was not able to do so with success. I had to do it in a wired ethernet fashion.
After that was done, all was set. Well, almost because I still had to reconfigure Express2 so that it no longer would work as a router but as a wifi client.
    *{ IV }*
Now my whole network looks like this
    DSL Modem == Extreme ~~ Express1 ~~ TimeCapsule ## Express2 ## laptop
Note that Express2 and my laptop are actually both connected wirelessly to TimeCapsule. I am unable to draw it in another way due to the limitations of using linear text to represent parallel items.
    *{ V }*
So, my advice for those who are having trouble with configuring Time Capsule or other wireless router, sometimes you might want to try plugging in an ethernet cable so that not only is the connection more solid but that pretty much continual contact with the router is available.
I realise that WDS in 802.11n is configured slightly differently and so perhaps WDS setup has improved but as it stands in 802.11g and 802.11b in the way Apple has implemented it, I would not suggest someone below the level of expert doing it. It can be very baffling, confusing, and irritating. I would never ask my father to try to set up WDS on his own even though there is a wizard for it. I know some people (like Chris Prillo) has had no problems with the wizard, but I have always had problems with the wizard. Not only did I have problems with it when trying to get the Time Capsule to replace an existing router, but when I set up my original WDS network I also couldn't use the wizard to set it up. It kept giving me errors.

You are over complicating things. I have a Time Capsule (TC), AirPort Extreme (AE) Base Station and AirPort Express (AX) all working flawlessly with WDS.
Make sure to write down the MAC addresses of the TC, AE, and AX. You will need them to configure WDS.
Using the AirPort Admin util configure the TC. Turn on WDS and set the TC to be the main.
Using the AirPort Admin software configure the first AX. Turn on the WDS and set it as a remote client of the TC. You will need the MAC address of the TC.
Using the AirPort Admin software configure the second AX. Turn on the WDS and set it as a remote client of the TC. You will need the MAC address of the TC.
You may have to reboot each device after each config change.
