On restart sometimes there is a clicking noise stopping machine starting!?

I restart the machine, all goes well but when its about to boot up there is a clicking noise coming from the DVD area, also there is a flashing light in the RAM area.
I have included a quick video as its probably easier to see... It only happens sometimes. I have done a clean install of SL but it has done this on previous copies. The machines is 2007 model.

A "clicking noise" is often a sign that a hard drive is malfunctioning. Suggest that you power down the device and take it to an Apple store to have them take a look, or contact Customer Service at Apple for instructions.

  • My iPod keeps restarting and making a loud clicking noise as it does.

Also, the computer doesn't recognize at all that there is anything in the USB, So I can't even reset the iPod. I'm stuck for what to do, It wont play or do anything, just when It has battery Will bring up the apple logo, make a clicking noise and repeat this, over and over.

This is often the description of a stuck hard drive (read/write heads stuck and can't move). I have seen a few "fixes" for this. One is to but the iPod in the freezer for a half hour then start it again and see if the differences in expanding parts unsticks it. The other more immediate "fix" is to get something firm like a phone book, start the iPod and then firmly (but not super hard) slap the ipod down on the phone book flat on its back, basically jarring it. This sometimes frees up the drive.
Of course, I am only relaying what I have read that has worked for some people in the past. So take it for whatever that is worth and try anything at your own risk.
    Good luck,
    Patrick

  • IBook G3 has "clicking" noise, won't start up!!

So I have had MANY problems with my iBook G3 ever since i purchased it in 2003. I have already had the hard drive replaced in it before, i've had memory added to it,etc. but since August of this year i've tried to solve this one and I can't. I don't know what to do!
First whenever I turn it on, a clicking sound comes from where the hard drive is, about 15 clicks usually i guess, which I'm sure means it is broken or not in good shape. If the screen turns on (otherwise it just stays black after the startup chime and clicking) then an icon of a question mark on a folder flashes, which I've learned it can't "find" the hard drive in one way or another, correct?
So i've been able to start it up in Target Disk Mode and connect it via FireWire to my iMac G4. the FireWire logo for Target Disk mode appears on the screen (otherwise the screen stays black like when I try to normally startup) like it should when it is started up in Target Disk Mode. However, it will not appear on my iMac. is it not mounting somehow? i'm not totally familiar with accessing files off messed up Hard Drives but I would love to know what I can try because I had my life of music and pictures on my iBook. it has also had a lot of motherboard problems over the years and this might just be part of that problem too.
Is there anything else I can try to get my files off my iBook? i don't care about it never working again... i just want what's on it. is there anything Apple can do? I'd LOVE to be able to do this myself but I'll take it to Apple if I know they can help me somehow...
Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
If this works you will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, try to restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
If Safe Mode doesn't work for you, try starting up from the Mac OS X Install Disc by inserting the disc and restarting your computer, holding down the C key as the startup chime is ending. Then click 'Next' at the language screen and choose Utilities > Disk Utility and select the hard drive in the left column. Choose the First Aid tab. Click Repair Disk to test and repair the hard drive.
Once you have repaired the hard drive with either Safe Mode or the Install disc's Disk Utility, then start up normally and repair permissions from Disk Utility in the Utilities folder on the hard drive. Again, take note of (and please report back here on) S.M.A.R.T. status and available hard drive space.
See if you are able to do a little hard drive maintenance to help things out.
    Good luck.

  • Inserted dvd makes grinding click click noise but wont start trick to eject

    Hi,
I inserted the dvd for a Myst game I just bought, the drive kept making this awful click/grinding noises but would not read the dvd, then I had to trick the drive by inserting a business card while pressing eject to get the dvd out. I wanted to make certain if it was the drive or the dvd so I tried my OS Leopard install dvd and the same thing happened with that one.. Is it because my mac is a few years old?
I hope someone can help me with this issue. I really want to play my game

  • Click/Noise at the start of the track.

I heare a strange loud noise when the track changes?
Anybody knows how to repair this ???
    Thanks.

Check the start of the track in question in a sample editor. If the waveform doesn't start at the zero crossing point, write a fade-in so it does.
    Hop that helps.

  • Click noise before recorded track comes in

    hello
when i play a song i have recorded, sometimes there is a clicking noise just before a track is to come in out of nowhere. heres a video of what i mean -
    here
in this particular video it does not sound like a click because there are distortion plugs on the track but you get the idea. This is the only recording playing, everything else is muted.
Please help! it so annoying. thanks

i think this is what your asking
I recorded a guitar plugged straight into my Firepod with a quarter inch cable. I made an audio track and set it for Input 1 then recorded the clean guitar with no effects. I didnt use any aux or bus channels just that one channelstrip for the guitar, which the plugins are on. now i have a few plugins that are on there -
    - AmpliTube
    - Channel EQ
    - AUMultiband Compressor
    - Exciter
    - SilverVerb
The extra noise comes when either/both AmpliTube or the AUMultiband are not bypassed. All of the other plugins seem to not be involved. The noise comes stright out of this guitar track and into Out 1-2, which both have jumps in level during when the noise occurs.
Thanks for all your help so far
let me know if im not being specific enough or you need more info

  • MacPro Won't restart - clicking noise - full shutdown and start OK

I've been having this problem with my MacPro 1,1 for months. If I restart it will just hang there making a clicking noise until I hold the power button to force it to shutdown and then I can start it without any problem.
Recently I had a complete hard drive failure and used Time Machine to restore onto a new hard disk. Now I have a problem where sometimes it just sits there with a folder with a question mark on it showing it can't find the drive to boot from. If I hold down the alt key then it shows my disk but calls it EFI Boot, not it's normal name of Macintosh HD, but then it can start up fine.
So I'm not sure if I've got two problems or if my old problem just got worse, any other info I need to post to help diagnose the problem?

"EFI" is cosmetic and can be result of using Disk Warrior for one. I think the trick is to reset Startup Disk off and back to the volume.
And DO run Disk Warrior in addition to Apple DU to repair and rebuild the directory!

    Hi Holly:

  • Clicking noise when playing MP3 tracks.

This faint clicking noise started today in FCE 4.0.1 I have read some bits online about perhaps the CD's were old and that was the reason when I transferred the songs into MP3 to drag into my video clip. I have played the songs on iTunes and there is no clicking noise. Also I have music in my iTunes that I got off the internet and it works fine too in iTunes, but starts the clicking when in FCE.
Also I have gone to other works I have created on FCE in the past and I have the same problems with the sound that I never use to have.
    Anyone have any ideas?

FWIW, no version of FCP or FCE has ever worked natively with the MP3 audio format or even with AIFF audio at 44.1khz (CD Audio sampling rate). This has been well documented in the User's Manual since version 1.0. While you can import non-native audio, it will require rendering to play properly. But even with rendering, MP3 files can often exhibit clicking and other abnormalities.

  • Click noise on SPDIF after update to  4.1

I am using iPod touch 3G 64 GB and 2G 32 GB on a great Onkyo ND-S1 dock with a digital connention (SPDIF) to amplifier. With the firmware 4.0, it has worked with best sound quality. The quality over SPDIF was much better, then with headphone connection.
After an software update of the 3G from 4.0 to 4.1, I got often click noises over the music. And the music don't sounds as good, as formerly. For the clicks, it's no matter, if Wi-Fi or airplane modus is on, or off. The USB connection on the dock is not connected. On headphone connection, there are no clicks.
With my second iPod touch (4.0 software, not updated) and Onkyo dock, there are no clicks, noises or any other problems at all. And it sounds better, then with 4.1.

    Hi
you have the onkyo ND-S1 working ok with the ipod toch 3?
Yes. ND-S1 works excellent with 3G and 2G till iOS 4.0.1. It sounds much better, then analogue connection or headphone jack.
    Are you happy with it?
I would be happy, if I could turn the update back from iOS 4.1 to 4.0.1 :-/
Untill the update of iOS, I was very happy with this docking station.
did you try the tuch 4g?
    No.

  • Ipod makes clicking noise and won't be recognized by itunes.

I've had this ipod for about 2-3 years (5th generation 30 GB) and all of a sudden it started making clicking noises when i started it. So i connected it to my computer and all it does is (1). Start up with the Apple Logo (2). Make that clicking noise where it sounds a ticking clock. (3.) Please wait, very low battery. (then it goes forward after) (4). Shows some icon with an ipod with dead eyes ( x.x ), emergency icon and it says www.apple.com/support/ipod. Please answer because i have over thousands of songs and i dont have them on my itunes ( i transfer the songs to my itunes. then my ipod but then i had to reformat it and so the songs on itunes are gone and i have only my ipod)

ive got excatly the same problem, my pod (also had it 3yrs 30gb 5th generation) has started making the clicking noise, i get the apple symbol appear or the sad looking face, im unable to restore it and i think the sad face may mean its a hardware problem from wot ive read on the online support. but i dont know what to do or where to send it to be fixed or if it can be fixed, if you find out how it can be fixed please let me know its doin me head in.

  • Making clicking noise

Every time I click on the hard drive it starts to make a clicking noise. I have had this computer since 4/02. Is it time for a new hard drive or a new computer? Is this something I can fix? Help!

    Welcome To Discussions djmills!
A clicking noise when you start the Mac is not a good sign! Your HD is possibly failing.
Backup as much as possible ASAP!
When you have finished doing that, run Repair Disk and post the results.
I would elaborate, but I really think you should do a backup before continuing use.
EDIT: I just reread your post, and realized that you wrote "Every time I click on the hard drive...". What do you mean by click?
